Samuel blir Israels domare
2 Arken stannade sedan i Kirjat-Jearim en lång tid, tjugo år. Men hela Israel sörjde och sökte[a] Herren. 3 Då sa Samuel till dem: ”Om ni verkligen menar allvar med att återvända till Herren, måste ni göra er av med alla främmande gudar och astartegudinnor[b]. Håll er av hela ert hjärta till Herren, tjäna endast honom och ingen annan! Då kommer han att rädda er från filistéerna.” 4 Då förstörde folket alla sina baalsgudar[c] och astartegudinnor och tillbad endast Herren.

Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(B) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(C) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(D) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(E) and commit(F) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(G) and he will deliver(H) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
