Guerra santa contro gli Amaleciti
15 Samuele disse a Saul: «Il Signore ha inviato me per consacrarti re sopra Israele suo popolo. Ora ascolta la voce del Signore. 2 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Ho considerato ciò che ha fatto Amalek a Israele, ciò che gli ha fatto per via, quando usciva dall'Egitto. 3 Và dunque e colpisci Amalek e vota allo sterminio quanto gli appartiene, non lasciarti prendere da compassione per lui, ma uccidi uomini e donne, bambini e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini». 4 Saul convocò il popolo e passò in rassegna le truppe in Telaìm: erano duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda. 5 Saul venne alla città di Amalek e tese un'imboscata nella valle. 6 Disse inoltre Saul ai Keniti: «Andate via, ritiratevi dagli Amaleciti prima che vi travolga insieme con loro, poiché avete usato benevolenza con tutti gli Israeliti, quando uscivano dall'Egitto». I Keniti si ritirarono da Amalek. 7 Saul colpì Amalek da Avila procedendo verso Sur, che è di fronte all'Egitto. 8 Egli prese vivo Agag, re di Amalek, e passò a fil di spada tutto il popolo. 9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e il meglio del bestiame minuto e grosso, gli animali grassi e gli agnelli, cioè tutto il meglio, e non vollero sterminarli; invece votarono allo sterminio tutto il bestiame scadente e patito.
Saul è respinto dal Signore
10 Allora fu rivolta a Samuele questa parola del Signore: 11 «Mi pento di aver costituito Saul re, perché si è allontanato da me e non ha messo in pratica la mia parola». Samuele rimase turbato e alzò grida al Signore tutta la notte.
12 Al mattino presto Samuele si alzò per andare incontro a Saul, ma fu annunziato a Samuele: «Saul è andato a Carmel, ed ecco si è fatto costruire un trofeo, poi è tornato passando altrove ed è sceso a Gàlgala». 13 Samuele raggiunse Saul e Saul gli disse: «Benedetto tu davanti al Signore; ho eseguito gli ordini del Signore». 14 Rispose Samuele: «Ma che è questo belar di pecore, che mi giunge all'orecchio, e questi muggiti d'armento che odo?». 15 Disse Saul: «Li hanno condotti qui dagli Amaleciti, come il meglio del bestiame grosso e minuto, che il popolo ha risparmiato per sacrificarli al Signore, tuo Dio. Il resto l'abbiamo votato allo sterminio». 16 Rispose Samuele a Saul: «Basta! Lascia che ti annunzi ciò che il Signore mi ha rivelato questa notte». E Saul gli disse: «Parla!». 17 Samuele cominciò: «Non sei tu capo delle tribù d'Israele, benché piccolo ai tuoi stessi occhi? Non ti ha forse il Signore consacrato re d'Israele? 18 Il Signore ti aveva mandato per una spedizione e aveva detto: Và, vota allo sterminio quei peccatori di Amaleciti, combattili finché non li avrai distrutti. 19 Perché dunque non hai ascoltato la voce del Signore e ti sei attaccato al bottino e hai fatto il male agli occhi del Signore?». 20 Saul insistè con Samuele: «Ma io ho obbedito alla parola del Signore, ho fatto la spedizione che il Signore mi ha ordinato, ho condotto Agag re di Amalek e ho sterminato gli Amaleciti. 21 Il popolo poi ha preso dal bottino pecore e armenti, primizie di ciò che è votato allo sterminio per sacrificare al Signore tuo Dio in Gàlgala». 22 Samuele esclamò:
«Il Signore forse gradisce gli olocausti e i
sacrifici
come obbedire alla voce del Signore?
Ecco, obbedire è meglio del sacrificio,
essere docili è più del grasso degli arieti.
23 Poiché peccato di divinazione è la ribellione,
e iniquità e terafim l'insubordinazione.
Perché hai rigettato la parola del Signore,
Egli ti ha rigettato come re».
Saul implora invano il perdono
24 Saul disse allora a Samuele: «Ho peccato per avere trasgredito il comando del Signore e i tuoi ordini, mentre ho temuto il popolo e ho ascoltato la sua voce. 25 Ma ora, perdona il mio peccato e ritorna con me, perché mi prostri al Signore». 26 Ma Samuele rispose a Saul: «Non posso ritornare con te, perché tu stesso hai rigettato la parola del Signore e il Signore ti ha rigettato perché tu non sia più re sopra Israele». 27 Samuele si voltò per andarsene ma Saul gli afferrò un lembo del mantello, che si strappò. 28 Samuele gli disse: «Il Signore ha strappato da te il regno d'Israele e l'ha dato ad un altro migliore di te. 29 D'altra parte la Gloria di Israele non mentisce né può ricredersi, perché Egli non è uomo per ricredersi». 30 Saul disse: «Ho peccato sì, ma onorami davanti agli anziani del mio popolo e davanti a Israele; ritorna con me perché mi prostri al Signore tuo Dio». 31 Samuele ritornò con Saul e questi si prostrò al Signore.
Morte di Agag e partenza di Samuele
32 Poi Samuele disse: «Conducetemi Agag, re di Amalek». Agag avanzò verso di lui tutto tremante, dicendo:
«Certo è passata l'amarezza della morte!».
33 Samuele l'apostrofò:
«Come la tua spada ha privato di figli le donne,
così sarà privata di figli tra le donne tua madre».
Poi Samuele trafisse Agag davanti al Signore in Gàlgala. 34 Samuele andò quindi a Rama e Saul salì a casa sua a Gàbaa di Saul. 35 Né Samuele tornò a rivedere Saul fino al giorno della sua morte, ma Samuele piangeva per Saul, perché il Signore si era pentito di aver fatto regnare Saul su Israele.

Saul Spares King Agag
15 Samuel also said to Saul, (A)“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord. 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, (B)how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and (C)attack[a] Amalek, and (D)utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
4 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Then Saul said to (E)the Kenites, (F)“Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For (G)you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 (H)And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from (I)Havilah all the way to (J)Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 (K)He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and (L)utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people (M)spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.
Saul Rejected as King
10 Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 (N)“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has (O)turned back from following Me, (P)and has not performed My commandments.” And it (Q)grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night. 12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to (R)Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.” 13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, (S)“Blessed are you of the Lord! I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
15 And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; (T)for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
And he said to him, “Speak on.”
17 So Samuel said, (U)“When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? 18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are [b]consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the [c]spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, (V)“But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 (W)But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 So Samuel said:
(X)“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, (Y)to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of [d]witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
(Z)He also has rejected you from being king.”
24 (AA)Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I (AB)feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, (AC)for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27 And as Samuel turned around to go away, (AD)Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore. 28 So Samuel said to him, (AE)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Strength of Israel (AF)will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.”
30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet (AG)honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously.
And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said, (AH)“As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to (AI)Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at (AJ)Gibeah of Saul. 35 And (AK)Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
