Die Bundeslade bei den Philistern
5 Die Philister brachten die erbeutete Bundeslade von Eben-Eser nach Aschdod 2 in den Tempel ihres Gottes Dagon und stellten sie neben seinem Standbild auf. 3 Als die Einwohner von Aschdod am nächsten Morgen in den Tempel kamen, lag das Standbild Dagons mit dem Gesicht nach unten vor der Bundeslade des Herrn am Boden. Sie stellten es wieder zurück auf seinen Platz. 4 Doch am nächsten Morgen lag es wieder vor der Bundeslade. Kopf und Hände der Statue lagen abgeschlagen auf der Türschwelle. Nur der Rumpf war unbeschädigt. 5 Deshalb tritt noch heute kein Priester des Gottes Dagon und kein Besucher seines Tempels in Aschdod auf diese Türschwelle.
6 Der Herr ließ die Einwohner von Aschdod und den umliegenden Dörfern seine Macht spüren, indem er sie mit einer Krankheit plagte: Viele litten plötzlich an sehr schmerzhaften Geschwülsten. 7 Als sie erkannten, warum es ihnen so schlecht ging, sagten sie: »Wir wollen die Bundeslade des Gottes Israels keinen Tag länger bei uns haben, denn wir ertragen es nicht mehr, wie er uns und unseren Gott Dagon quält.«
8 Sie riefen alle Fürsten der Philister zusammen und fragten: »Was soll mit der Bundeslade geschehen?«
»Bringt sie in die Stadt Gat«, schlugen die Fürsten vor. Sofort führten die Einwohner von Aschdod diesen Beschluss aus. 9 Doch nachdem sie die Bundeslade in Gat zurückgelassen hatten, zeigte der Herr auch dort den Menschen seine Macht: Junge und Alte litten an schmerzhaften Geschwüren, die ganze Stadt geriet in Aufruhr. 10 Darum schickten sie die Bundeslade weiter nach Ekron.
Als die Ekroniter sie kommen sahen, bekamen sie schreckliche Angst. »Sie haben die Bundeslade des Gottes Israels zu uns gebracht, um uns alle umzubringen!«, schrien sie durcheinander. 11 Noch einmal wurden alle Fürsten der Philister zusammengerufen. Die Ekroniter forderten: »Die Bundeslade des Gottes Israels muss unbedingt fort von hier! Schickt sie doch dorthin zurück, wo sie herkommt. Sonst bringt sie noch unser ganzes Volk um.« Gottes harte Strafe hatte die ganze Stadt in Todesangst versetzt. 12 Wer nicht starb, litt schwer an den Geschwüren. Überall war lautes Klagen und Schreien zu hören.

5 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they carried it from Ebene′zer to Ashdod; 2 then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 The hand of the Lord was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us; for his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that tumors broke out upon them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to slay us and our people.” 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not slay us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. The hand of God was very heavy there; 12 the men who did not die were stricken with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
