30 Three days later, when David and his men arrived in Ziklag, they found that the ‘Amaleki had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had sacked Ziklag and burned it down; 2 and they had taken captive the women and everyone there, great and small. They hadn’t killed anyone but had carried them off as they went on their way. 3 So when David and his men arrived at the city, there it was, burned down, with their wives, sons and daughters taken captive. 4 Then David and the people with him cried aloud until they had no more power to cry. 5 David’s two wives had been taken captive — Achino‘am from Yizre‘el and Avigayil the widow of Naval from Karmel.
6 David was in serious trouble: the people were talking about stoning him to death, because all the people were in such deep grief, each man over his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in Adonai his God. 7 David said to Avyatar the cohen, the son of Achimelekh, “Please bring the ritual vest here to me.” Avyatar brought the vest to David. 8 Then David consulted Adonai. He asked, “Should I go in pursuit of these raiders? Will I catch up with them?” And [Adonai] answered him, “Go in pursuit, because you will overtake them and recover everyone and everything.” 9 So David went, he and the six hundred men with him. They came to Vadi B’sor, where those who were to stay behind waited. 10 Then David continued in pursuit with four hundred men, while two hundred too exhausted to cross Vadi B’sor stayed behind.
11 They found an Egyptian in the countryside and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink; 12 they also gave him a lump of dried figs and two bunches of raisins. After eating, he revived; because he hadn’t eaten anything or drunk any water for three days and nights. 13 David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” He answered, “I’m an Egyptian boy, the slave of an ‘Amaleki. My master abandoned me three days ago, because I got sick. 14 We raided the Negev of the K’reti, the Negev of Y’hudah and the Negev of Kalev; and we burned down Ziklag.” 15 David asked him, “Will you lead me down to this raiding party?” He said, “If you will swear by God to me that you won’t kill me or hand me back to my master, I will lead you down to the raiders.” 16 He led them down, and there they were, spread out all over the ground, eating, drinking and celebrating how much spoil they had taken from the territory of the P’lishtim and the territory of Y’hudah. 17 David attacked them from dawn until the evening of the next day. Not one of them escaped, except for 400 young men who jumped on camels and got away. 18 David recovered all that the ‘Amaleki had taken; he also rescued his two wives. 19 They found nothing missing, big or little — not sons, not daughters, not plundered goods or anything else they had taken — David brought it all back. 20 David took all the flocks and herds and drove them ahead of their own livestock, announcing, “This is David’s spoil.”
21 David came to where the two hundred men were who had been too exhausted to follow him, whom they had let stay at Vadi B’sor. They came out to meet David and the people with him. When David approached them he greeted them. 22 But some of the men who had gone with David were evil men, scoundrels; and they said, “They didn’t go with us, so we’re not giving them any of the property we’ve recovered. Each man can take his wife and children and leave.” 23 Then David said, “No, my brothers, don’t do this with the goods Adonai has given us. He protected us, and he handed the raiding party over to us. 24 Anyhow, no one agrees with you about this. No, the share of someone who stays with the equipment will be the same as the share of someone who goes out and fights — they will share equally.” 25 It has been that way from that day on; he established it as a ruling for Isra’el to this day.
26 When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to the leaders of Y’hudah who were his friends with a note, “Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of Adonai.” 27 He sent such gifts
to those in Beit-El,
to those in Ramot,
to those in Yatir,
28 to those in ‘Aro‘er,
to those in Sifmot,
to those in Esht’moa,
29 to those in Rakhal,
to those in Yerachme’eli,
to those in the cities of the Keni,
30 to those in Hormah,
to those in Kor-‘Ashan,
to those in ‘Atakh,
31 to those in Hevron,
and to all the places where David and his men had frequently visited.

30 Now when David and his men were come to Siceleg on the third day, the Amalecites had made an invasion on the south side upon Siceleg, and had smitten Siceleg, and burnt it with fire.
2 And had taken the women captives that were in it, both little and great: and they had not killed any person, but had carried them with them, and went on their way.
3 So when David and his men came to the city, and found it burnt with fire, and that their wives and their sons, and their daughters were taken captives,
4 David and the people that were with him, lifted up their voices, and wept till they had no more tears.
5 For the two wives also of David were taken captives, Achinoam the Jezrahelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal of Carmel.
6 And David was greatly afflicted: for the people had a mind to stone him, for the soul of every man was bitterly grieved for his sons, and daughters: but David took courage in the Lord his God.
7 And he said to Abiathar the priest the son of Achimelech: Bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
8 And David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I pursue after these robbers, and shall I overtake them, or not? And the Lord said to him: Pursue after them: for thou shalt surely overtake them and recover the prey.
9 So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and they came to the torrent Besor: and some being weary stayed there.
10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred stayed, who being weary could not go over the torrent Besor.
11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David: and they gave him bread to eat, and water to drink,
12 As also a piece of a cake of figs, and two bunches of raisins. And when he had eaten them his spirit returned, and he was refreshed: for he had not eaten bread, nor drunk water three days, and three nights.
13 And David said to him: To whom dost thou belong? or whence dost thou come? and whither art thou going? He said: I am a young man of Egypt, the servant of an Amalecite, and my master left me, because I began to be sick three days ago.
14 For we made an invasion on the south side of Cerethi, and upon Juda, and upon the south of Caleb, and we burnt Siceleg with fire.
15 And David said to him: Canst thou bring me to this company? And he said: Swear to me by God, that thou wilt not kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee to this company. And David swore to him.
16 And when he had brought him, behold they were lying spread upon all the ground, eating and drinking, and as it were keeping a festival day, for all the prey, and the spoils which they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Juda.
17 And David slew them from the evening unto the evening of the next day, and there escaped not a man of them, but four hundred young men, who had gotten upon camels, and fled.
18 So David recovered all that the Amalecites had taken, and he rescued his two wives.
19 And there was nothing missing small or great, neither of their sons or their daughters, nor of the spoils, and whatsoever they had taken: David recovered all.
20 And he took all the flocks and the herds, and made them go before him: and they said: This is the prey of David.
21 And David came to the two hundred men, who being weary had stayed, and were not able to follow David, and he had ordered them to abide at the torrent Besor: and they came out to meet David, and the people that were with him. And David coming to the people saluted them peaceably.
22 Then all the wicked and unjust men that had gone with David answering, said: Because they came not with us, we will not give them any thing of the prey which we have recovered: but let every man take his wife and his children, and be contented with them, and go his way.
23 But David said: You shall not do so, my brethren, with these things, which the Lord hath given us, who hath kept us, and hath delivered the robbers that invaded us into our hands.
24 And no man shall hearken to you in this matter. But equal shall be the portion of him that went down to battle and of him that abode at the baggage, and they shall divide alike.
25 And this hath been done from that day forward, and since was made a statute, and an ordinance, and as a law in Israel.
26 Then David came to Siceleg, and sent presents of the prey to the ancients of Juda his neighbours, saying: Receive a blessing of the prey of the enemies of the Lord.
27 To them that were in Bethel, and that were in Ramoth to the south, and to them that were in Jether,
28 And to them that were in Aroer and that were in Sephamoth, and that were in Esthamo,
29 And that were in Rachal, and that were in the cities of Jerameel, and that were in the cities of Ceni,
30 And that were in Arama, and that were in the lake Asan, and that were in Athach,
31 And that were in Hebron, and to the rest that were in those places, in which David had abode with his men.

David Destroys the Amalekites
30 David and his men reached Ziklag(A) on the third day. Now the Amalekites(B) had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned(C) it, 2 and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.
3 When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.(D) 4 So David and his men wept(E) aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5 David’s two wives(F) had been captured—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 6 David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning(G) him; each one was bitter(H) in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength(I) in the Lord his God.
7 Then David said to Abiathar(J) the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.(K)” Abiathar brought it to him, 8 and David inquired(L) of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?”
“Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed(M) in the rescue.(N)”
9 David and the six hundred men(O) with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. 10 Two hundred of them were too exhausted(P) to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
11 They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat— 12 part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived,(Q) for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
13 David asked him, “Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?”
He said, “I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite.(R) My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. 14 We raided the Negev of the Kerethites,(S) some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb.(T) And we burned(U) Ziklag.”
15 David asked him, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?”
He answered, “Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master,(V) and I will take you down to them.”
16 He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling(W) because of the great amount of plunder(X) they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. 17 David fought(Y) them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.(Z) 18 David recovered(AA) everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. 19 Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. 20 He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, “This is David’s plunder.”
21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted(AB) to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22 But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, “Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.”
23 David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24 Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.(AC)” 25 David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
26 When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, “Here is a gift(AD) for you from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.”
27 David sent it to those who were in Bethel,(AE) Ramoth(AF) Negev and Jattir;(AG) 28 to those in Aroer,(AH) Siphmoth,(AI) Eshtemoa(AJ) 29 and Rakal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites(AK) and the Kenites;(AL) 30 to those in Hormah,(AM) Bor Ashan,(AN) Athak 31 and Hebron;(AO) and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.

30 Al tercer día, David y sus hombres llegaron a Siclag, pero se encontraron con que los amalecitas habían invadido la región del Néguev y que, después de atacar e incendiar Siclag, 2 habían tomado cautivos a las mujeres y a todos los que estaban allí, desde el más grande hasta el más pequeño. 6 David se alarmó, pues la tropa hablaba de apedrearlo; y es que todos se sentían amargados por la pérdida de sus hijos e hijas. Pero cobró ánimo y puso su confianza en el Señor su Dios. 7 Entonces le dijo al sacerdote Abiatar hijo de Ajimélec:
―Tráeme el efod.
Tan pronto como Abiatar se lo trajo, 8 David consultó al Señor:
―¿Debo perseguir a esa banda? ¿Los voy a alcanzar?
―Persíguelos —le respondió el Señor—. Vas a alcanzarlos, y rescatarás a los cautivos.
9 David partió con sus seiscientos hombres hasta llegar al arroyo de Besor. Allí se quedaron rezagados 10 doscientos hombres que estaban demasiado cansados para cruzar el arroyo. Así que David continuó la persecución con los cuatrocientos hombres restantes.
11 Los hombres de David se encontraron en el campo con un egipcio, y se lo llevaron a David. Le dieron de comer y de beber, 12 y le ofrecieron una torta de higo y dos tortas de uvas pasas, pues hacía tres días y tres noches que no había comido nada. En cuanto el egipcio comió, recobró las fuerzas.
13 ―¿A quién perteneces? —le preguntó David—. ¿De dónde vienes?
―Soy egipcio —le respondió—, esclavo de un amalecita. Hace tres días caí enfermo, y mi amo me abandonó. 14 Habíamos invadido la región sur de los quereteos, de Judá y de Caleb; también incendiamos Siclag.
15 ―Guíanos adonde están esos bandidos —le dijo David.
―Júrame tú por Dios —suplicó el egipcio— que no me matarás ni me entregarás a mi amo. Con esa condición, te llevo adonde está la banda.
16 El egipcio los guio hasta los amalecitas, los cuales estaban dispersos por todo el campo, comiendo, bebiendo y festejando el gran botín que habían conseguido en el territorio filisteo y en el de Judá. 17 David los atacó al amanecer y los combatió hasta la tarde del día siguiente. Los únicos que lograron escapar fueron cuatrocientos muchachos que huyeron en sus camellos. 18 David pudo recobrar todo lo que los amalecitas habían robado, y también rescató a sus dos esposas. 19 Nada les faltó del botín, ni grande ni pequeño, ni hijos ni hijas, ni ninguna otra cosa de lo que les habían quitado. 20 David también se apoderó de todas las ovejas y del ganado. La gente lo llevaba todo al frente y pregonaba: «¡Este es el botín de David!»
21 Luego David regresó al arroyo de Besor, donde se habían quedado los doscientos hombres que estaban demasiado cansados para seguirlo. Ellos salieron al encuentro de David y su gente, y David, por su parte, se acercó para saludarlos. 22 Pero entre los que acompañaban a David había gente mala y perversa que dijo:
―Estos no vinieron con nosotros, así que no vamos a darles nada del botín que recobramos. Que tome cada uno a su esposa y a sus hijos, y que se vaya.
23 ―No hagáis eso, mis hermanos —les respondió David—. Fue el Señor quien nos lo dio todo, y quien nos protegió y puso en nuestras manos a esa banda de maleantes que nos había atacado. 24 ¿Quién va a estar de acuerdo con vosotros? Del botín participan tanto los que se quedan cuidando el bagaje como los que van a la batalla.
25 Aquel día David estableció esa norma como ley en Israel, la cual sigue vigente hasta el día de hoy.
26 Después de llegar a Siclag, David envió parte del botín a sus amigos que eran ancianos de Judá, con este mensaje: «Aquí tenéis un regalo del botín que rescatamos de los enemigos del Señor». 27 Recibieron ese regalo los ancianos de Betel, Ramot del Néguev, Jatir, 28 Aroer, Sifmot, Estemoa, 29 Racal, las ciudades de Jeramel, las ciudades quenitas 30 de Jormá, Corasán, Atac 31 y Hebrón, y los ancianos de todos los lugares donde David y sus hombres habían vivido.
