22 David se fue de allí y se dirigió a la cueva de Adulán.(A) Cuando sus hermanos y toda la familia de su padre lo supieron, fueron a verlo. 2 Y lo supo también mucha gente afligida, y otros con muchas deudas, o presas de gran amargura, y se le unieron unos cuatrocientos hombres y lo hicieron su jefe. 3 Entonces David salió de allí y se fue a Mispá de Moab, y le dijo al rey de ese lugar:
«Te ruego que recibas a mi padre y mi madre, y los protejas hasta que yo sepa lo que Dios va a hacer conmigo.»
4 Fue así como David llevó a sus padres ante el rey de Moab, y ellos vivieron allí mientras David estaba en la fortaleza. 5 Pero el profeta Gad le dijo a David:
«Ya es tiempo de que salgas de la fortaleza y vayas a la tierra de Judá».
Y David se fue, y llegó al bosque de Jaret.
Saúl mata a los sacerdotes de Nob
6 Saúl estaba descansando en una colina de Gabaa, a la sombra de un tamarisco, cuando tuvo noticias de David y de quienes lo acompañaban. Saúl tenía su lanza en la mano, y sus sirvientes estaban a su alrededor. 7 Entonces les dijo:
«Ustedes, benjaminitas, escúchenme bien: ¿Acaso el hijo de Yesé les ha dado tierras de labranza, o viñas, o los ha nombrado comandantes y capitanes de su ejército? 8 ¿Por qué han conspirado contra mí? ¿Por qué nadie me ha dicho que mi hijo Jonatán se ha aliado con el hijo de Yesé? ¡Ustedes no me tienen compasión! ¡Han dejado que mi hijo ponga en contra mía a mi siervo David, y ahora él me anda espiando!»
9 Entonces el edomita Doeg, que era jefe de los sirvientes de Saúl, dijo:
«Yo estaba en Nob, y vi cuando el hijo de Yesé llegó a visitar a Ajimélec hijo de Ajitob. 10 Este sacerdote consultó al Señor por David, y además le dio pan y la espada del filisteo Goliat.»(B)
11 El rey mandó traer entonces al sacerdote Ajimélec hijo de Ajitob, y a la familia de su padre y a los sacerdotes que estaban en Nob, y cuando todos ellos estuvieron ante el rey, 12 Saúl dijo:
«Escúchame, hijo de Ajitob.»
Y el sacerdote respondió:
«Te escucho, mi señor.»
13 Y Saúl le respondió:
«¿Por qué tú y el hijo de Yesé han conspirado contra mí? Yo sé que le diste pan, y una espada, y consultaste al Señor por él para que se ponga en contra mía. ¡Y ahora me anda espiando!»
14 Entonces Ajimélec le contestó al rey:
«¿Hay entre todos tus sirvientes alguien que iguale a David en la fidelidad que te tiene? No sólo es tu yerno, y está bajo tus órdenes, sino que le ha dado renombre a tu casa. 15 ¿Acaso es la primera vez que consulto a Dios por él? ¡De ninguna manera! No culpe Su Majestad de nada a este siervo suyo, ni a nadie en mi familia. De este asunto no sé nada, ni poco ni mucho.»
16 Pero el rey dijo:
«Puedes estar seguro, Ajimélec, que tú y toda la familia de tu padre morirán.»
17 Y dirigiéndose el rey a los guardias que lo rodeaban, les ordenó:
«¡Maten a los sacerdotes del Señor! También ellos le son fieles a David, pues sabían que él huía de mí, y no me lo hicieron saber.»
Pero los guardias se negaron a cumplir la orden de matar a los sacerdotes del Señor, 18 así que el rey llamó a Doeg y le dijo:
«Ven y mátalos tú mismo.»
Y Doeg arremetió contra ellos, y ese mismo día mató a ochenta y cinco sacerdotes que vestían efod de lino. 19 Luego entró en Nob, donde vivían los sacerdotes, y mató a hombres, mujeres y niños de pecho, y hasta mató bueyes, asnos y ovejas. A todos los mató a filo de espada.
20 Pero Abiatar, que era uno de los hijos de Ajimélec hijo de Ajitob, logró escapar y fue en busca de David. 21 Cuando lo encontró, lo puso al tanto de cómo Saúl había ordenado matar a los sacerdotes del Señor. 22 Entonces David le dijo a Abiatar:
«Cuando vi a Doeg el edomita en Nob, me imaginé que él iría a decirle a Saúl que me había visto. Yo tengo la culpa de que hayan matado a toda la familia de tu padre. 23 Pero quédate conmigo y no tengas miedo, pues quien busca matarme también te buscará a ti, pero conmigo estarás a salvo.

David at the Cave of Adullam
22 David departed from there and escaped to (A)the cave of (B)Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 (C)And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,[a] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him (D)about four hundred men.
3 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay[b] with you, till I know what God will do for me.” 4 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5 Then the prophet (E)Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.
Saul Kills the Priests at Nob
6 Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under (F)the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. 7 And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse (G)give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, 8 that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me (H)when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you (I)is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, (J)to lie in wait, as at this day.” 9 Then answered (K)Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse (L)coming to Nob, to (M)Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, 10 (N)and he inquired of the Lord for him and (O)gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and (P)have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, (Q)to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and captain over[c] your bodyguard, and honored in your house? 15 Is today the first time (R)that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, (S)much or little.” 16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house.” 17 And the king said to (T)the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, (U)and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; (V)both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword.
20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named (W)Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, (X)when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 23 (Y)Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”
