15 Samuel a venit la Saul şi i-a zis: „Eu sunt cel pe care l-a trimis Domnul să te ungă drept rege peste poporul Său, Israel. Prin urmare, ascultă mesajul Domnului. 2 Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: «Îi voi pedepsi pe amalekiţi pentru ceea ce i-au făcut lui Israel, când i s-au împotrivit pe drumul pe care venea din Egipt. 3 Du-te deci şi atacă-i pe amalekiţi; nimiceşte cu desăvârşire[a] tot ceea ce le aparţine! Nu-i cruţa, ci dă la moarte bărbaţii şi femeile, copiii şi sugarii, vitele şi oile, cămilele şi măgarii.»“
4 Saul a adunat oştirea şi a numărat-o la Telaim. Erau două sute de mii de pedestraşi dintre care zece mii de luptători din Iuda. 5 Când Saul a ajuns aproape de cetatea amalekiţilor, s-a aşezat la pândă în vâlcea. 6 Saul le-a spus cheniţilor: „Plecaţi, ieşiţi din mijlocul amalekiţilor ca să nu vă nimicesc împreună cu ei, deoarece voi aţi arătat bunătate faţă de toţi israeliţii atunci când ei au venit din Egipt.“ Astfel, cheniţii au plecat din mijlocul amalekiţilor.
7 Saul i-a zdrobit pe amalekiţi de la Havila până la Şur care se află la răsărit de Egipt. 8 L-a prins viu pe Agag, regele amalekiţilor, şi a nimicit tot poporul, trecându-l prin ascuţişul sabiei. 9 Saul şi oştirea l-au cruţat însă pe Agag şi cele mai bune oi, vite, viţei graşi[b] şi miei – tot ceea ce era mai bun. Ei n-au dorit să le nimicească, ci au nimicit doar lucrurile care erau de dispreţuit şi fără valoare.
10 Atunci Cuvântul Domnului a venit la Samuel şi i-a zis: 11 „Îmi pare rău că l-am pus pe Saul rege, pentru că s-a abătut de la Mine şi nu a împlinit poruncile Mele.“ Samuel s-a mâhnit şi a strigat către Domnul toată noaptea. 12 S-a trezit dis-de-dimineaţă pentru a-l întâlni pe Saul, însă i s-a spus: „Saul a plecat la Carmel şi iată că şi-a ridicat un monument. Apoi s-a întors şi s-a dus la Ghilgal.“
13 Când Samuel l-a întâlnit pe Saul, acesta i-a zis:
– Fii binecuvântat de Domnul! Am împlinit porunca Domnului.
14 – Atunci ce este acest behăit de oi, care ajunge la urechile mele şi acest muget de vite, pe care-l aud? i-a răspuns Samuel.
15 – Luptătorii le-au adus de la amalekiţi, i-a zis Saul. Au cruţat cele mai bune oi şi vite ca să le jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeul tău. Celelalte însă le-am nimicit cu desăvârşire.
16 – Opreşte-te! i-a zis Samuel. Îţi voi spune ce mi-a vorbit Domnul în noaptea aceasta.
– Spune-mi! i-a zis Saul
17 Samuel i-a spus:
– Când erai mic în ochii tăi, nu ai devenit tu, oare, căpetenia seminţiilor lui Israel? Domnul te-a uns rege al lui Israel 18 şi te-a trimis într-o misiune, spunându-ţi: „Du-te şi nimiceşte-i cu desăvârşire pe păcătoşii aceia de amalekiţi! Luptă-te cu ei până vor fi nimiciţi!“ 19 De ce n-ai ascultat de glasul Domnului şi te-ai aruncat asupra prăzii făcând astfel ce este rău în ochii Domnului?
20 – Eu am ascultat de Domnul, i-a răspuns Saul. Am plecat în misiunea pe care mi-a încredinţat-o şi l-am adus aici pe Agag, regele amalekiţilor, iar pe amalekiţi i-am nimicit cu desăvârşire. 21 Dar luptătorii au luat din pradă oi şi vite, ce era mai bun din ceea ce trebuia nimicit, ca să le jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, la Ghilgal.
22 Atunci Samuel i-a zis lui Saul:
Oare Îi plac Domnului arderile de tot şi jertfele
mai mult decât ascultarea de glasul Său?
Ascultarea este mai bună decât jertfele
şi luarea-aminte la Cuvântul Lui este mai bună decât grăsimea berbecilor.
23 Căci răzvrătirea este ca păcatul ghicirii,
iar îngâmfarea – ca nelegiuirea şi idolatria[c].
Pentru că ai respins Cuvântul Domnului,
te-a respins şi El ca rege.
24 Saul i-a zis lui Samuel:
– Am păcătuit căci am încălcat porunca Domnului şi n-am ascultat de cuvintele tale. Mi-a fost teamă de oştire şi am ascultat de glasul ei. 25 Acum, te rog, iartă-mi păcatul şi întoarce-te împreună cu mine pentru a mă putea închina Domnului.
26 – Nu mă voi întoarce împreună cu tine, i-a zis Samuel. Pentru că ai respins Cuvântul Domnului şi Domnul te-a respins ca rege al lui Israel.
27 În timp ce Samuel se întorcea să plece, Saul l-a apucat de marginea mantiei, iar aceasta s-a rupt. 28 Atunci Samuel i-a zis:
– Domnul a rupt astăzi de la tine domnia peste Israel şi a dat-o unuia din semenii tăi, mai bun decât tine. 29 Cel Ce este Slava lui Israel nu minte şi nu se răzgândeşte, căci El nu este om ca să se răzgândească.
30 – Am păcătuit, a zis Saul. Totuşi cinsteşte-mă, te rog, înaintea sfatului bătrânilor poporului meu şi înaintea lui Israel, întorcându-te cu mine pentru a mă putea închina înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul tău.
31 Samuel s-a întors după Saul, iar acesta s-a închinat înaintea Domnului. 32 Apoi Samuel a zis: „Aduceţi-l înaintea mea pe Agag, regele amalekiţilor.“ Agag a venit spre el încrezător[d], spunându-şi: „Cu siguranţă că amărăciunea morţii a trecut.“[e] 33 Samuel i-a zis lui Agag: „După cum sabia ta a lăsat femei fără fii, tot aşa mama ta va fi lăsată fără fiu printre femei.“ Apoi l-a tăiat pe Agag în bucăţi înaintea Domnului, la Ghilgal. 34 După aceea, Samuel a plecat la Rama, iar Saul s-a dus la casa lui, în Ghiva lui Saul. 35 Samuel nu s-a mai dus să-l vadă pe Saul până în ziua morţii lui, însă a plâns pentru el. 15 And Samuel said to Saul, Jehovah sent *me* to anoint thee king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah.
2 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I have considered what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and destroy utterly all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4 And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to the city of the Amalekites, and set an ambush in the valley.
6 And Saul said to the Kenites, Go, depart, and go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt. And the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 And Saul smote Amalek from Havilah as thou comest to Shur, which is opposite to Egypt.
8 And he took Agag the king of Amalek alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and oxen, and beasts of the second bearing, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not devote them to destruction; but everything that was mean and weak, that they destroyed utterly.
10 And the word of Jehovah came to Samuel, saying,
11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned away from following me, and hath not fulfilled my words. And Samuel was much grieved; and he cried to Jehovah all night.
12 And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set him up a monument, and has turned about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13 And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, Blessed art thou of Jehovah: I have fulfilled the word of Jehovah.
14 And Samuel said, What [means] then this bleating of sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites, because the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16 And Samuel said to Saul, Stay, that I may tell thee what Jehovah has said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on.
17 And Samuel said, Was it not when thou wast little in thine eyes that thou [becamest] the head of the tribes of Israel, and Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And Jehovah sent thee on a way and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of Jehovah, but didst fall upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of Jehovah?
20 And Saul said to Samuel, I have indeed hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Has Jehovah delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, As in hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, Attention than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is [as] the sin of divination, And selfwill is [as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He hath also rejected thee from being king.
24 And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy words; for I feared the people, and hearkened to their voice.
25 And now, I pray thee, forgive my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.
26 And Samuel said to Saul, I will not turn again with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah has rejected thee from being king over Israel.
27 And as Samuel turned to go away, [Saul] laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
28 Then Samuel said to him, Jehovah has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and has given it to thy neighbour, who is better than thou.
29 And also the Hope of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30 And he said, I have sinned; honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy God.
31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.
32 And Samuel said, Bring ye near to me Agag the king of Amalek. And Agag came to him gaily. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33 And Samuel said, As thy sword has made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless above women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.
34 And Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35 And Samuel saw Saul no more until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned over Saul; and Jehovah repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
