13 Saúl tenía treinta[a] años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó cuarenta[b] y dos años sobre Israel. 2 Y Saúl escogió para sí 3,000 hombres de Israel, de los cuales 2,000 estaban con Saúl en Micmas(A) y en la región montañosa de Betel[c], y 1,000 estaban con Jonatán en Geba(B) de Benjamín. Y al resto del pueblo lo despidió, cada uno a su tienda.
3 Jonatán hirió la guarnición de los filisteos(C) que estaba en Geba(D), y lo supieron los filisteos. Entonces Saúl tocó la trompeta por toda la tierra diciendo: «Que lo oigan los hebreos(E)». 4 Y todo Israel oyó decir que Saúl había herido la guarnición de los filisteos, y también que Israel se había hecho odioso a los filisteos(F). Entonces el pueblo se reunió con[d] Saúl en Gilgal.
5 Y los filisteos se reunieron para pelear contra Israel: 30,000 carros, 6,000 hombres de a caballo y gente tan numerosa como la arena a la orilla del mar(G); y subieron y acamparon en Micmas, al oriente de Bet Avén(H). 6 Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que estaban en un apuro, pues el pueblo estaba en gran aprieto, el pueblo se escondió en cuevas, en matorrales, en peñascos, en sótanos y en fosos(I). 7 También algunos de los hebreos pasaron el Jordán a la tierra de Gad y de Galaad(J). Pero Saúl estaba todavía en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo le seguía atemorizado.
8 Él esperó siete días, conforme al tiempo que Samuel había señalado(K), pero Samuel no llegaba a Gilgal, y el pueblo se le dispersaba. 9 Entonces Saúl dijo: «Tráiganme el holocausto y las ofrendas de paz». Y él ofreció el holocausto(L). 10 Tan pronto como terminó de ofrecer el holocausto, llegó Samuel; y Saúl salió a su encuentro para saludarle[e](M).
11 Pero Samuel dijo: «¿Qué has hecho?». Y Saúl respondió: «Como vi que el pueblo se me dispersaba, que tú no llegabas dentro de los días señalados y que los filisteos estaban reunidos en Micmas(N), 12 me dije: “Ahora los filisteos descenderán contra mí en Gilgal, y no he implorado el favor del Señor”. Así que me vi forzado, y ofrecí el holocausto».
13 Samuel dijo a Saúl: «Has obrado neciamente(O); no has guardado el mandamiento que el Señor tu Dios te ordenó(P), pues ahora el Señor hubiera establecido tu reino sobre[f] Israel para siempre(Q). 14 Pero ahora tu reino no perdurará(R). El Señor ha buscado para sí un hombre conforme a Su corazón(S), y el Señor lo ha designado como príncipe sobre Su pueblo porque tú no guardaste lo que el Señor te ordenó».
15 Entonces Samuel se levantó y subió de Gilgal a Guibeá de Benjamín(T). Y Saúl contó[g] el pueblo que se hallaba con él, como 600 hombres(U). 16 Y Saúl, su hijo Jonatán y el pueblo que se hallaba con ellos, estaban situados en Geba de Benjamín, mientras los filisteos acampaban en Micmas(V). 17 Y salió una avanzada del campamento de los filisteos en tres compañías(W); una compañía se dirigió por el camino de Ofra(X), a la tierra de Sual; 18 otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de Bet Horón(Y), y la otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de la frontera que mira sobre el valle de Zeboim(Z), hacia el desierto.
19 En toda la tierra de Israel no podía hallarse ningún herrero(AA), pues los filisteos decían: «No sea que los hebreos hagan espadas o lanzas(AB)». 20 Y todo Israel tenía que descender a los filisteos, cada cual para afilar la reja de su arado, su azuela, su hacha o su azadón. 21 El precio era dos tercios de siclo (8 gramos de plata) por las rejas de arado, las azuelas, las horquillas, las hachas, y para arreglar los azadones. 22 Y sucedió que en el día de la batalla, no había espada ni lanza en mano de ninguna de la gente que estaba con Saúl y Jonatán, solo las tenían Saúl y su hijo Jonatán(AC). 23 Y la guarnición de los filisteos(AD) salió hacia el paso de Micmas(AE).

Abasajja abalala bonna n’abasindika baddeyo ewaabwe. 3 (B)Yonasaani n’alumba olusiisira lw’Abafirisuuti eyali e Geba, Abafirisuuti ne bakiwulira. Awo Sawulo n’alagira, bafuuwe ekkondeere mu nsi yonna, ng’agamba nti, “Abaebbulaniya bawulire!” 4 (C)Awo Isirayiri yenna bwe baawulira nga Sawulo awambye olusiisira lw’Abafirisuuti, ate nga Isirayiri yali efuuse ekyenyinyalwa eri Abafirisuuti, abantu ne balagirwa okwegatta ku Sawulo e Girugaali.
5 (D)Abafirisuuti ne beekuŋŋaanya okulwana n’Abayisirayiri. Abafirisuuti baalina amagaali emitwalo esatu, n’abeebagala embalaasi kakaaga, n’abaserikale abeebigere ng’omuwendo gwabwe gwenkana ng’omusenyu ogw’oku nnyanja obungi. Ne bayambuka ne basiisira e Mikumasi, ku luuyi olw’ebuvanjuba olw’e Besaveni. 6 (E)Abasajja Abayisirayiri bwe baalaba ng’embeera yaabwe mbi nnyo, n’eggye lyabwe nga linnyigirizibwa omulabe, ne beekweka mu mpuku, ne mu bisaka ne mu njazi, ne mu binnya. 7 (F)Ne wabaawo n’abamu ku Baebbulaniya abaasomoka Yoludaani ne bagenda mu nsi ya Gaadi ne Gireyaadi.
Sawulo ye n’asigala e Girugaali, n’abaserikale bonna be yali nabo, naye nga bajjudde okutya. 8 (G)N’alinda okumala ennaku musanvu, ebbanga Samwiri lye yali amulaze, naye Samwiri n’atajjirawo e Girugaali, n’abasajja ba Sawulo ne batandika okumuvaako. 9 (H)Sawulo kyeyava ayogera nti, “Mundeetere wano ekiweebwayo ekyokebwa n’ekiweebwayo olw’emirembe.” N’awaayo ekiweebwayo ekyokebwa. 10 (I)Naye bwe yali yakamala okuwaayo ekiweebwayo ekyokebwa, Samwiri n’atuuka. Sawulo n’agenda okumwaniriza.
11 (J)Samwiri n’amubuuza nti, “Kiki kino ky’okoze?” Sawulo n’addamu nti, “Bwe nnalabye ng’abasajja batandise okusaasaana, ate nga tozze mu kiseera kye walaga, ate nga n’Abafirisuuti bakuŋŋaanira e Mikumasi, 12 (K)ne ndowooza nti, ‘Kaakano Abafirisuuti bagenda kukkirira okunnumba e Girugaali, nga sinnaba kwegayirira kufuna mukisa gwa Mukama, kyenvudde mpalirizibwa okuwaayo ekiweebwayo ekyokebwa.’ ”
13 (L)Samwiri n’agamba Sawulo nti, “Okoze kya busirusiru, obutakuuma kiragiro kya Mukama Katonda wo kye yakulagira. Singa wakikuumye, Mukama yandinywezezza obwakabaka bwo okufuga Isirayiri emirembe gyonna. 14 (M)Naye kaakano obwakabaka bwo tebuliba bwa lubeerera. Mukama anoonyezzaayo omusajja alina omutima ogumunoonya era amulonze okuba omukulembeze w’abantu be, kubanga tokuumye kiragiro kya Mukama.” 15 (N)Awo Samwiri n’ava e Girugaali n’ayambuka e Gibea mu Benyamini, Sawulo n’abala abasajja abaali naye, nga baawera nga lukaaga.
Ebbula ly’Ebyokulwanyisa mu Isirayiri
16 Sawulo ne mutabani we Yonasaani, n’abasajja abaali nabo baali basiisidde e Gebea ekya Benyamini, ate ng’Abafirisuuti bo basiisidde Mikumasi. 17 (O)Abalabe ne bava mu nkambi y’Abafirisuuti mu bibinja bisatu, ekimu ne kyolekera Yofula, mu nsi ya Suwaali, 18 (P)n’ekibinja ekirala ne kyolekera Besukolooni, n’ekyokusatu ne kyolekera ensalo etunuulidde ekiwonvu Zeboyimu okwolekera eddungu.
19 (Q)Mu nsi yonna eya Isirayiri temwali muweesi n’omu, kubanga Abafirisuuti baali baasalawo nti, “Si kulwa ng’Abaebbulaniya beeweeseza ebitala oba amafumu!” 20 Noolwekyo Abayisirayiri bonna baaserengetanga eri Abafirisuuti, okuwagala enkumbi zaabwe, n’ebiwabyo byabwe, n’embazzi zaabwe, ne najjolo zaabwe. 21 Baalinanga omuwendo gwe baasasulanga olw’okuwagala enkumbi ey’amannyo abiri n’ebiwabyo, nga gwa njawulo ku ogwo gwe baawangayo olw’okuwagala embazzi n’emiwunda.
22 (R)Era ku lunaku olw’olutalo tewaali muserikale n’omu ku baali ne Sawulo ne Yonasaani, eyalina ekitala wadde effumu, okuggyako Sawulo ne mutabani we Yonasaani[a]. 23 (S)Waaliwo ekibinja eky’Abafirisuuti ekyali kigenze mu kifo ekyayitibwanga Mikumasi.

Saul Fights the Philistines
13 Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,[a] 2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in (A)Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in (B)Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent. 3 Jonathan defeated (C)the garrison of the Philistines that was (D)at Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul (E)blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” 4 And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops (F)like the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of (G)Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves (H)in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, 7 and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
Saul's Unlawful Sacrifice
8 (I)He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, 12 I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, (J)“You have done foolishly. (K)You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now (L)your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man (M)after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince[b] over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 15 And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal. The rest of the people went up after Saul to meet the army; they went up from Gilgal[c] to (N)Gibeah of Benjamin.
And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, (O)about six hundred men. 16 And Saul and Jonathan his son and the people who were present with them stayed in (P)Geba of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And (Q)raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual; 18 another company turned toward (R)Beth-horon; and another company turned toward the border that looks down on the Valley of (S)Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 (T)Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears.” 20 But every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle,[d] 21 and the charge was two-thirds of a shekel[e] for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel[f] for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.[g] 22 So on the day of the battle (U)there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and Jonathan his son had them. 23 And (V)the garrison of the Philistines went out to the (W)pass of (X)Michmash.
