Gehoorzaamheid gaat boven offers
15 Op een dag zei Samuël tegen Saul: ‘Ik kroonde u tot koning van Israël omdat God mij dat opdroeg. Zorg ervoor dat u Hem gehoorzaamt. 2 Dit is zijn gebod aan u: “Ik heb besloten een oude rekening met de Amalekieten te vereffenen, omdat zij mijn volk hebben aangevallen toen de Israëlieten uit Egypte kwamen. 3 Ga er op af en vernietig hen: mannen, vrouwen, kleine kinderen, babyʼs, ossen, schapen, kamelen en ezels.” ’
4 Saul verzamelde zijn leger bij Telaïm: een troepenmacht van tweehonderdduizend man met nog eens tienduizend man uit Juda. 5 Toen Saul bij de stad van de Amalekieten was aangekomen, legde hij een hinderlaag in een lager gelegen dal daar vlakbij. 6 Saul stuurde een boodschap naar de Kenieten met de waarschuwing dat zij de Amalekieten moesten verlaten, als zij niet ook vernietigd wilden worden. ‘Want u was vriendelijk voor de Israëlieten toen zij uit het land Egypte kwamen,’ liet hij hun weten. Daarom pakten de Kenieten hun bezittingen bij elkaar en verlieten het land van de Amalekieten. 7 Daarna versloeg Saul de Amalekieten, van Chawila tot Sur, dat ten oosten van Egypte ligt. 8 Hij nam koning Agag van Amalek gevangen. Alle anderen doodde hij. 9 Saul en zijn mannen spaarden echter de beste exemplaren van de schapen en ossen en de vetste lammeren, eigenlijk alles wat zij wel konden gebruiken. Alleen de zwakke dieren en waardeloze voorwerpen vernietigden zij.
10 Toen zei de Here tegen Samuël: 11 ‘Ik heb er spijt van dat Ik Saul ooit koning heb gemaakt, want hij heeft geweigerd Mij te gehoorzamen.’ Samuël was zo geschokt door de woorden van God dat hij de hele nacht tot de Here bleef bidden. 12 De volgende morgen vroeg ging hij op zoek naar Saul. Iemand vertelde hem dat Saul naar de berg Karmel was gegaan om een monument voor zichzelf op te richten en dat hij daarna naar Gilgal was gegaan. 13 Toen Samuël hem ten slotte vond, begroette Saul hem met de woorden: ‘Moge de Here u zegenen. U ziet het, ik heb het bevel van de Here uitgevoerd!’ 14 ‘Maar wat heeft dat geblaat van schapen en geloei van ossen dat ik hoor, dan te betekenen?’ vroeg Samuël. 15 ‘Het leger heeft de beste schapen en ossen in leven gelaten,’ gaf Saul toe, ‘maar zij gaan ze offeren aan de Here, uw God, al het andere hebben wij vernietigd.’ 16 Maar Samuël legde hem het zwijgen op: ‘Stil! Luister naar wat de Here mij de afgelopen nacht heeft gezegd!’ ‘Wat was dat dan?’ vroeg Saul. 17 Samuël vertelde hem: ‘Toen u nog geen hoge dunk van uzelf had, liet de Here u zalven tot koning van Israël. 18 Hij gaf u een duidelijke opdracht: “Ga en vernietig de boosdoeners, de Amalekieten, tot zij allemaal dood zijn.” 19 Waarom gehoorzaamde u de Here dan niet? Waarom was u zo belust op buit en deed u precies wat de Here had verboden?’ 20 ‘Maar ik héb de Here gehoorzaamd,’ verdedigde Saul zich. ‘Ik heb gedaan wat Hij mij heeft opgedragen, ik heb koning Agag meegebracht en alle anderen gedood. 21 Maar omdat mijn troepen het wilden, vond ik het goed dat de beste schapen en ossen en de rest van de buit in Gilgal aan de Here, uw God, zouden worden geofferd.’ 22 Samuël antwoordde echter: ‘Heeft de Here net zoveel genoegen in uw brandoffers en geschenken als in uw gehoorzaamheid? Gehoorzaamheid is Hem veel meer waard dan offers. Hij heeft liever dat u naar Hem luistert dan dat u Hem het vet van de rammen offert. 23 Want opstandigheid is net zo erg als toverij en koppigheid is net zo erg als aanbidding van afgodsbeelden. Omdat u het woord van de Here in de wind hebt geslagen, heeft Hij het koningschap van u afgenomen.’ 24 ‘Ik heb gezondigd,’ gaf Saul toe. ‘Ja, ik heb het gebod van de Here en uw aanwijzingen niet opgevolgd, omdat ik bang was voor het volk en deed wat het mij vroeg. 25 Vergeef mij alstublieft en ga met mij mee om de Here te aanbidden.’ 26 Maar Samuël weigerde: ‘Ik ga niet met u mee. Omdat u het gebod van de Here niet hebt gehoorzaamd, heeft Hij u verworpen. U zult niet langer koning van Israël zijn.’ 27 Toen Samuël zich omdraaide om weg te gaan, greep Saul hem vast bij de zoom van zijn mantel, maar die scheurde af. 28 Samuël reageerde daarop met de woorden: ‘De Here heeft het koninkrijk Israël vandaag van u losgescheurd en het aan iemand gegeven die beter is dan u. 29 God op wie het vertrouwen van Israël rust, liegt niet en kent ook geen berouw, want Hij is geen mens!’ 30 Saul drong bij Samuël aan: ‘Ik heb gezondigd, maar alstublieft, eer mij in de ogen van de leiders en het volk door met mij mee te gaan om de Here, uw God, te aanbidden.’ 31 Samuël stemde daarin toe en keerde met Saul terug, die zich in aanbidding voor de Here neerboog.
32 Toen zei Samuël: ‘Breng koning Agag bij mij.’ Onbezorgd verscheen Agag voor Samuël, want hij dacht dat hij zou worden gespaard. 33 Samuël zei tegen hem: ‘Net zoals uw zwaard vrouwen van hun kinderen heeft beroofd, zal nu ook úw moeder kinderloos worden.’ Daarna hakte hij hem voor de ogen van de Here in Gilgal in stukken. 34 Samuël ging hierna terug naar Rama en Saul begaf zich naar zijn woonplaats Gibea. 35 Samuël zag Saul hierna nooit weer, maar bleef toch voortdurend om hem treuren. En de Here had er spijt van dat Hij Saul koning over Israël had gemaakt.

El Señor rechaza a Saúl
15 Samuel le dijo a Saúl: «El SEÑOR me ha enviado para ungirte como rey sobre su pueblo Israel. Escucha el mensaje del SEÑOR. 2 El SEÑOR Todopoderoso dice: “Cuando los israelitas salieron de Egipto, los amalecitas trataron de evitar que fueran a Canaán. Yo vi lo que hicieron los amalecitas. 3 Ve ahora y enfrenta a los amalecitas, destrúyelos por completo a ellos y a todas sus posesiones. No dejes nada vivo; mata a los hombres, a las mujeres, a los niños y a los recién nacidos, los toros y las ovejas y todos sus camellos y asnos”».
4 Saúl reunió al ejército en Telayin. Eran 200 000 soldados de infantería y 10 000 soldados de Judá. 5 Luego se dirigió a la ciudad de Amalec y esperó en el valle. 6 Les dijo a los quenitas: «Salgan y apártense de los amalecitas para que no los destruya junto con ellos. Ustedes fueron buenos con los israelitas cuando salieron de Egipto». Así que los quenitas se apartaron de los amalecitas.
7 Saúl luchó contra los amalecitas, los persiguió desde Javilá hasta Sur, cerca de la frontera de Egipto, y los derrotó. 8 Saúl capturó vivo a Agag, rey de los amalecitas. Le perdonó la vida, pero mató a todo su ejército. 9 Saúl y sus soldados se sintieron mal de destruir todo, así que le perdonaron la vida a Agag, pero se quedaron con lo mejor del ganado, las mejores ovejas y los carneros. Se quedaron con todo lo que valía la pena y destruyeron lo que no tenía mucho valor.
10 Después Samuel recibió palabra del SEÑOR: 11 «Saúl ha dejado de seguirme. Me arrepiento de haberlo hecho rey porque no me obedece». Samuel se molestó mucho y clamó al SEÑOR toda la noche.
12 A la mañana siguiente, temprano, Samuel fue a ver a Saúl, pero se encontró con que Saúl había salido para Carmel para hacerse un monumento en honor a sí mismo. «Va a ir a varios lugares y al final irá a Guilgal», le dijo el pueblo.
Así que Samuel fue a donde estaba Saúl y lo encontró ofreciendo, de lo que había tomado de los amalecitas, un sacrificio que debe quemarse completamente al Señor.[a] 13 Samuel se acercó a Saúl y este lo saludó así:
—¡El SEÑOR te bendiga! Obedecí los mandamientos del SEÑOR.
14 Pero Samuel dijo:
—Entonces, ¿qué es ese ruido? ¿Por qué se oyen ovejas y ganado?
15 Saúl contestó:
—Los soldados los tomaron de los amalecitas y se quedaron con lo mejor para ofrecer sacrificio que debe quemarse completamente al SEÑOR su Dios, pero destruimos todo lo demás.
16 Samuel le dijo a Saúl:
—¡Espera! Déjame decirte lo que el SEÑOR me dijo anoche.
Saúl contestó:
—Está bien, dime lo que te dijo.
17 Samuel dijo:
—Antes te considerabas alguien sin importancia, pero luego te convertiste en líder de las tribus de Israel. El SEÑOR te eligió como rey de Israel. 18 El SEÑOR te envió en una misión y te dijo: “Ve y destruye a todos los amalecitas porque son malvados. Destrúyelos a todos. Lucha contra ellos hasta que los destruyas totalmente”. 19 ¿Por qué no obedeciste al SEÑOR y te quedaste con el botín haciendo lo que no es del agrado del SEÑOR?
20 Saúl contestó:
—¡Sí obedecí al SEÑOR! Fui a donde me envió el SEÑOR y destruí a los amalecitas, traje al rey Agag 21 y los soldados tomaron las mejores ovejas y ganado para sacrificarlos al SEÑOR su Dios en Guilgal.
22 Pero Samuel dijo:
—¿Qué complace más al SEÑOR: sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente y otros sacrificios u obedecer los mandatos del SEÑOR? Es mejor obedecerle que ofrecerle sacrificios. Es mejor obedecerle que ofrecerle la grasa de los carneros. 23 Negarse a obedecerlo es tan malo como la brujería. Ser tercos y hacer la voluntad propia es como el pecado de adorar ídolos. Tú te negaste a obedecer el mandato del SEÑOR, por eso él ahora se niega a aceptarte como rey.
24 Entonces Saúl le dijo a Samuel:
—He pecado. No obedecí los mandatos del SEÑOR ni hice lo que me dijiste. Tenía miedo del pueblo y les hice caso. 25 Ahora te ruego que me perdones por haber pecado. Ven conmigo para que rindas culto al SEÑOR.
26 Pero Samuel le dijo a Saúl:
—No regresaré contigo. Rechazaste el mandato del SEÑOR y ahora el SEÑOR te rechaza como rey de Israel.
27 Cuando Samuel se dio vuelta para irse, Saúl le agarró el borde del manto, y este se rompió. 28 Entonces Samuel le dijo a Saúl:
—De igual manera, hoy mismo el SEÑOR te ha quitado el reino de Israel. Se lo ha dado a uno de tus amigos que es mejor que tú. 29 Dios, que es la Gloria de Israel, vive para siempre. No miente ni cambia de parecer. No es como los hombres que cambian de opinión.
30 Saúl contestó:
—¡Está bien, he pecado! Pero por favor, regresa conmigo. Muéstrame algo de respeto frente a los líderes y frente al pueblo de Israel. Regresa conmigo para que pueda adorar al SEÑOR tu Dios.
31 Samuel regresó con Saúl y este adoró al SEÑOR.
32 Samuel dijo:
—Tráiganme a Agag, el rey de los amalecitas.
Lo trajeron encadenado, pero muy tranquilo, pues pensaba que de seguro Samuel no lo mataría.[b] 33 Pero Samuel le dijo a Agag:
—Como con tu espada les quitaste sus hijos a muchas mamás, ahora tu mamá se quedará sin hijo.
Y allí mismo lo despedazó ante el SEÑOR.
34 Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá y Saúl se fue a su casa en Guibeá. 35 Samuel sentía gran tristeza por Saúl y nunca más volvió a verlo. El SEÑOR se arrepintió de haber hecho a Saúl rey de Israel.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King
15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint(A) you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites(B) for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally(C) destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6 Then he said to the Kenites,(D) “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites(E) all the way from Havilah to Shur,(F) near the eastern border of Egypt. 8 He took Agag(G) king of the Amalekites alive,(H) and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9 But Saul and the army spared(I) Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves[b] and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret(J) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned(K) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”(L) Samuel was angry,(M) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel.(N) There he has set up a monument(O) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul replied.
17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small(P) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder(Q) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”
20 “But I did obey(R) the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22 But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(S)
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(T)
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(U) the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(V) I violated(W) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(X) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive(Y) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected(Z) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,(AA) and it tore.(AB) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn(AC) the kingdom(AD) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.(AE) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie(AF) or change(AG) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
30 Saul replied, “I have sinned.(AH) But please honor(AI) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”
Agag came to him in chains.[c] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.”(AJ)
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(AK) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(AL) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(AM) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(AN) for him. And the Lord regretted(AO) that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Saul Spares King Agag
15 Samuel also said to Saul, (A)“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord. 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, (B)how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and (C)attack[a] Amalek, and (D)utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
4 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Then Saul said to (E)the Kenites, (F)“Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For (G)you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 (H)And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from (I)Havilah all the way to (J)Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 (K)He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and (L)utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people (M)spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.
Saul Rejected as King
10 Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 (N)“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has (O)turned back from following Me, (P)and has not performed My commandments.” And it (Q)grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night. 12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to (R)Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.” 13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, (S)“Blessed are you of the Lord! I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
15 And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; (T)for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
And he said to him, “Speak on.”
17 So Samuel said, (U)“When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? 18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are [b]consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the [c]spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, (V)“But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 (W)But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 So Samuel said:
(X)“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, (Y)to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of [d]witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
(Z)He also has rejected you from being king.”
24 (AA)Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I (AB)feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, (AC)for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27 And as Samuel turned around to go away, (AD)Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore. 28 So Samuel said to him, (AE)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Strength of Israel (AF)will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.”
30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet (AG)honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously.
And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said, (AH)“As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to (AI)Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at (AJ)Gibeah of Saul. 35 And (AK)Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
