Keep Fervent in Your Love

Therefore, since (A)Christ has [a]suffered in the flesh, (B)arm yourselves also with the same purpose—because (C)he who has [b]suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin— (D)so as to no longer live (E)the rest of the time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the (F)will of God. For (G)the time already past is sufficient for you to have worked out the desire of the Gentiles, [c](H)having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and [d]abominable idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of (I)dissipation, (J)maligning you, but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge (K)the living and the dead. For to this (L)the gospel has been [e]proclaimed even to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh as men, they live in the spirit according to the will of God.

(M)The end of all things is at hand; therefore, (N)be of sound thinking and sober spirit for the purpose of [f]prayer. Above all, (O)keep fervent in your love for one another, because (P)love covers a multitude of sins. (Q)Be hospitable to one another without (R)grumbling. 10 (S)As each one has received a gift, employ it in serving one another as good (T)stewards of the manifold grace of God— 11 (U)whoever speaks, [g]as one speaking the (V)oracles of God; whoever serves, as one serving [h](W)by the strength which God supplies; so that (X)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, (Y)to whom belongs the glory and might forever and ever. Amen.

Sharing the Suffering of Christ

12 (Z)Beloved, do not be surprised at the (AA)fiery trial among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you. 13 But to the degree you are (AB)sharing the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the (AC)revelation of His glory (AD)you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are insulted [i](AE)for the name of Christ, (AF)you are blessed, (AG)because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that (AH)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a [j](AI)troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a (AJ)Christian, he is not to be put to shame, but is to (AK)glorify God in this name. 17 For it is time for judgment (AL)to begin [k]with (AM)the house of God; and if it (AN)begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those (AO)who do not obey the (AP)gospel of God? 18 (AQ)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, [l]what will become of the (AR)godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to (AS)the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

Shepherd the Flock of God

(AT)Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your (AU)fellow elder and (AV)witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a (AW)partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd (AX)the flock of God among you, overseeing (AY)not under compulsion, but willingly, according to God; and (AZ)not for dishonest gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as (BA)lording it over [m]those allotted to you, but being (BB)examples to the flock. And when the Chief (BC)Shepherd appears, you will receive the (BD)unfading [n](BE)crown of glory. (BF)You younger men, likewise, (BG)be subject to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with (BH)humility toward one another, for (BI)God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Therefore (BJ)humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, (BK)casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. (BL)Be of sober spirit, (BM)be watchful. Your adversary, (BN)the devil, prowls around like a roaring (BO)lion, seeking someone to devour. [o](BP)But resist him, (BQ)firm in the faith, knowing that (BR)the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished among your [p]brethren who are in the world. 10 And after you have suffered (BS)for a little while, the (BT)God of all grace, who (BU)called you to His (BV)eternal glory in Christ, will Himself (BW)restore, (BX)strengthen, confirm, and ground you. 11 (BY)To Him be might forever and ever. Amen.

12 Through (BZ)Silvanus, our faithful brother as I regard him, (CA)I have written to you briefly, exhorting and bearing witness that this is (CB)the true grace of God. (CC)Stand firm in it! 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, (CD)Mark. 14 (CE)Greet one another with a kiss of love.

(CF)Peace be to you all who are in Christ.

Living for God

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,(A) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.(B) As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(C) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(D) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(E) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(F) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(G) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(H) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(I) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(J) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(K) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(L) Offer hospitality(M) to one another without grumbling.(N) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(O) as faithful(P) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(Q) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(R) so that in all things God may be praised(S) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(T)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(U) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(V) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(W) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(X) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(Y) you are blessed,(Z) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(AA) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(AB) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(AC) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a](AD)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(AE) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(AF) and a witness(AG) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(AH) Be shepherds of God’s flock(AI) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(AJ) not pursuing dishonest gain,(AK) but eager to serve; not lording it over(AL) those entrusted to you, but being examples(AM) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(AN) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(AO) that will never fade away.(AP)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(AQ) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(AR) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[b](AS)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(AT) Cast all your anxiety on him(AU) because he cares for you.(AV)

Be alert and of sober mind.(AW) Your enemy the devil prowls around(AX) like a roaring lion(AY) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(AZ) standing firm in the faith,(BA) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(BB)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(BC) to his eternal glory(BD) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(BE) will himself restore you and make you strong,(BF) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(BG)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[c](BH) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(BI) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(BJ)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(BK) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(BL)

Peace(BM) to all of you who are in Christ.
