De norra stammarna avfaller från Davids hus
12 Rehabeam begav sig till Sikem, ty hela Israel hade kommit till Sikem för att göra honom till kung. 2 Jerobeam, Nebats son, hörde detta medan han ännu var i Egypten, dit han hade flytt undan kung Salomo. Jerobeam bodde alltså i Egypten, 3 men man sände bud och kallade honom tillbaka. Då kom Jerobeam tillsammans med Israels hela församling och sade till Rehabeam: 4 "Din far gjorde vårt ok tungt. Men lätta du nu det svåra arbete och det tunga ok som din far lade på oss, så vill vi tjäna dig." 5 Han svarade dem: "Gå och kom tillbaka till mig om tre dagar." Och folket gick.
6 Då rådgjorde kung Rehabeam med de gamla som hade varit i tjänst hos hans fader Salomo, medan denne ännu levde, och han sade: "Vilket svar råder ni mig att ge detta folk?" 7 De svarade honom: "Om du i dag vill bli detta folks tjänare och tjäna dem, om du lyssnar till deras bön och talar goda ord till dem, så kommer de för alltid att bli dina tjänare." 8 Men han brydde sig inte om det råd som de gamla hade givit honom, utan rådgjorde med de unga män som hade växt upp med honom och som nu var i hans tjänst. 9 Han sade till dem: "Vilket svar råder ni oss att ge detta folk som har sagt till mig: Lätta det ok som din far har lagt på oss?" 10 De unga männen, som hade växt upp med honom, svarade: "Så här bör du säga till detta folk, som har sagt till dig: Din far gjorde vårt ok tungt, men lätta du det för oss - så här bör du säga till dem: Mitt minsta finger är tjockare än min fars midja. 11 Ni skall veta, att har min far lagt på er ett tungt ok, skall jag göra ert ok ännu tyngre. Har min far tuktat er med ris, skall jag tukta er med skorpiongissel."
12 På tredje dagen kom Jerobeam med allt folket i Israel till Rehabeam, så som kungen hade befallt när han sade: "Kom tillbaka till mig på tredje dagen." 13 Då gav kungen folket ett hårt svar. Han brydde sig inte om det råd som de gamla hade givit honom. 14 Han följde de unga männens råd och sade: "Har min far gjort ert ok tungt, skall jag göra ert ok ännu tyngre. Har min far tuktat er med ris, skall jag tukta er med skorpiongissel." 15 Kungen lyssnade alltså inte till folket. Herren ledde det så, för att det skulle uppfyllas som Herren hade talat till Jerobeam, Nebats son, genom Ahia från Silo.
16 När hela Israel förstod att kungen inte ville höra på dem, gav folket honom detta svar:
"Vilken del har vi i David?
Ingen arvslott har vi i Isais son.
Gå hem till dina tält, Israel.
Se nu själv om ditt hus, du David."
Därefter gick Israel hem igen. 17 Rehabeam förblev kung endast över de israeliter som bodde i Juda städer.
18 När kung Rehabeam sände ut Adoram, som hade uppsikten över tvångsarbetena, stenade hela Israel honom till döds. Själv måste kung Rehabeam skyndsamt stiga upp i sin vagn och fly till Jerusalem. 19 Så avföll Israel från Davids hus och har varit skilt från det ända till denna dag.
20 När hela Israel fick höra att Jerobeam hade kommit tillbaka, sände de bud och kallade honom till folkförsamlingen och gjorde honom till kung över hela Israel. Ingen höll sig till Davids hus mer än Juda stam.
Semajas budskap
21 När Rehabeam kom till Jerusalem, kallade han samman hela Juda hus och Benjamins stam, 180 000 utvalda krigare, för att de skulle strida mot Israels hus och vinna tillbaka kungadömet åt Rehabeam, Salomos son. 22 Men Guds ord kom till gudsmannen Semaja. Han sade: 23 "Säg till Rehabeam, Salomos son, Juda kung, och till hela Juda hus och Benjamin och det övriga folket: 24 Så säger Herren: Ni skall inte dra upp för att strida mot era bröder, Israels barn. Vänd tillbaka hem, var och en till sitt, ty det som har skett har kommit från mig." De lyssnade till Herrens ord och vände om och gick sin väg, så som Herren hade befallt.
Jerobeams kalvdyrkan i Betel och Dan
25 Jerobeam befäste Sikem i Efraims bergsbygd och bosatte sig där. Därifrån drog han bort och befäste Penuel. 26 Jerobeam tänkte inom sig: "Nu kan riket komma tillbaka till Davids hus. 27 Ty om folket drar upp till Herrens hus i Jerusalem för att offra, kan folket i sitt hjärta vända tillbaka till sin herre Rehabeam, Juda kung. Då dödar de mig och vänder tillbaka till Rehabeam, Juda kung."
28 Sedan kungen hade rådgjort om detta, lät han göra två kalvar av guld och sade till folket: "Nu får det vara nog med era färder upp till Jerusalem. Se, här är din Gud, Israel, han som har fört dig upp ur Egyptens land." 29 Han ställde upp den ena i Betel, och den andra i Dan. 30 Detta blev en orsak till synd. Folket gick ända till Dan för att träda fram för den ena av dem. 31 Han byggde också upp offerhöjdshus och gjorde alla slags män ur folket till präster, sådana som inte var leviter.
32 Jerobeam anordnade en högtid på femtonde dagen i åttonde månaden, lik högtiden i Juda, och gick då upp till altaret. Han gjorde detta i Betel för att offra åt de kalvar som han hade låtit göra. De män som han hade gjort till offerhöjdspräster, lät han göra tjänst i Betel. 33 Till det altare som han hade gjort i Betel steg han alltså upp på femtonde dagen i åttonde månaden, det var den månad som han själv hade valt. Han anordnade då en högtid för Israels barn och steg upp till altaret för att tända offereld.

Rehabeam en Jerobeam
12 Rehabeam ging naar Sichem waar heel Israël samenkwam om hem tot koning te kronen. 2-4 Jerobeam, die nog steeds in Egypte was, waarheen hij voor Salomo was gevlucht, hoorde van zijn vrienden over deze plannen. Zij drongen er bij hem op aan de plechtigheid ook bij te wonen. Daarom mengde hij zich onder de Israëlieten in Sichem waar hij samen met de Israëlieten eisen begon te stellen aan Rehabeam. ‘Uw vader was een harde meester,’ zeiden zij tegen Rehabeam. ‘Wij willen u niet als koning, tenzij u belooft dat u onze lasten zult verlichten en ons beter zult behandelen dan uw vader deed.’ 5 ‘Geef mij drie dagen de tijd om hierover na te denken,’ antwoordde Rehabeam. ‘Kom dan terug voor het antwoord.’ Zij gingen daarmee akkoord.
6 Rehabeam besprak deze zaak met de leiders die zijn vader Salomo altijd raad hadden gegeven. ‘Wat vindt u dat ik moet antwoorden?’ vroeg hij hun. 7 En zij antwoordden: ‘Als u hun een bevestigend antwoord geeft en belooft goed voor hen te zijn en hen op de juiste manier te dienen, zult u voor altijd hun koning kunnen zijn.’ 8 Maar Rehabeam schoof dat advies terzijde en wendde zich met dezelfde vraag tot de jonge mannen met wie hij was opgegroeid. 9 ‘Wat denken jullie dat ik het beste kan doen?’ vroeg hij hun. 10 En deze jonge mannen zeiden: ‘Zeg tegen de mensen: “Als u denkt dat mijn vader machtig was, vergist u zich, want ik zal nog veel machtiger zijn. 11 Ja, mijn vader was hard voor u, maar ik zal nog harder voor u zijn. Mijn vader sloeg u met de gesel, maar ik zal u afranselen met schorpioenen.” ’
12 Toen Jerobeam en de Israëlieten drie dagen later bij Rehabeam terugkwamen, 13,14 antwoordde de nieuwe koning hen op een ruwe manier. Hij negeerde het advies van de wijze leiders en volgde dat van de jonge mannen op, 15 hij weigerde dus in te gaan op de eisen van het volk. Maar de Here had hierop aangestuurd, zodat Hij kon laten uitkomen wat Hij door de profeet Ahia uit Silo aan Jerobeam had gezegd.
16,17 Toen de mensen beseften dat de koning het meende en weigerde naar hen te luisteren, begonnen zij te schreeuwen: ‘Weg met David en zijn familieleden. Laten we naar huis gaan. Laat Rehabeam maar koning zijn over zijn eigen familie.’ En zo liet heel Israël hem in de steek, uitgezonderd de stam van Juda. De leden van die stam bleven trouw en aanvaardden Rehabeam als hun koning. 18 Toen koning Rehabeam enige tijd later Adoram, de ontvanger van de belastingen, eropuit stuurde om met het volk te gaan onderhandelen, gooide een grote menigte hem met stenen dood. Koning Rehabeam wist echter te ontkomen en vluchtte in een rijtuig naar Jeruzalem. 19 Zo kwam Israël in opstand tegen het nageslacht van David en hierin is tot op de huidige dag niets veranderd.
20 Toen de Israëlieten hoorden dat Jerobeam uit Egypte was teruggekeerd, werd hij uitgenodigd voor een grote bijeenkomst van het volk, daar werd hij tot koning over Israël uitgeroepen. Alleen de stam van Juda bleef het koningshuis van David trouw. 21 Na zijn intocht in Jeruzalem bracht koning Rehabeam zijn leger—alle strijdbare mannen van Juda en Benjamin, honderdtachtigduizend man speciale troepen—op de been om de rest van Israël met geweld te dwingen hem als koning te erkennen. 22 Maar God stuurde de volgende boodschap aan de profeet Semaja: 23,24 ‘Zeg tegen Salomoʼs zoon Rehabeam, de koning van Juda, en tegen alle stamleden van Juda en Benjamin dat zij niet tegen hun broeders, de Israëlieten, mogen vechten. Zeg dat het leger moet worden ontbonden en dat zij naar huis moeten gaan, want wat Rehabeam is overkomen, gebeurde omdat Ik dat zo wilde.’ En zo ging het leger naar huis, zoals de Here had bevolen.
25 Jerobeam bouwde in de heuvels van Efraïm de stad Sichem uit, versterkte haar en maakte haar tot zijn hoofdstad. Later deed hij hetzelfde met Penuël. 26 Jerobeam dacht: ‘Als ik niet voorzichtig ben, zal het volk weer een nakomeling van David als koning willen hebben. 27 Als zij naar Jeruzalem gaan om in de tempel te offeren, zal hun houding ten opzichte van koning Rehabeam snel verbeteren. Dan zullen zij mij doden en hem vragen koning te worden.’ 28,29 En na beraad met zijn adviseurs liet de koning toen twee gouden kalveren maken en zei tegen het volk: ‘Het is veel te veel moeite steeds de tocht naar Jeruzalem te maken, van nu af zullen deze twee beelden uw goden zijn, zij hebben u uit uw gevangenschap in Egypte bevrijd.’ Het ene afgodsbeeld werd in Betel en het andere in Dan geplaatst. 30 Dit was natuurlijk een grote zonde, want de mensen uit het hele land, tot aan Dan toe, gingen nu deze beelden aanbidden. 31 Tevens bouwde hij tempels op de heuvels en stelde hij priesters uit alle lagen van de bevolking aan, ook al behoorden zij niet tot de stam van Levi. 32,33 Jerobeam liet afkondigen dat het jaarlijkse tempelfeest voortaan op de vijftiende dag van de achtste maand in Betel zou worden gehouden (een datum die hij eigenmachtig veranderde), een gelijksoortig feest als dat in Jeruzalem. Hij offerde zelf op het altaar van de kalveren in Betel en verbrandde reukwerk. Ook in Betel wees hij priesters aan die dienst moesten doen in de tempels op de heuvels.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
12 Rehoboam went to Shechem,(B) for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from[a] Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke(D) on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(E) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer,(F) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(G) the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged(H) you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,(I) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah(J) the Shilonite.
16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share(K) do we have in David,
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!(L)
Look after your own house, David!”
So the Israelites went home.(M) 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah,(N) Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[b](O) who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death.(P) King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David(Q) to this day.
20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.(R)
21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war(S) against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 But this word of God came to Shemaiah(T) the man of God:(U) 23 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.
Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan
25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem(V) in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.[c](W)
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. 27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem,(X) they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves.(Y) He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(Z) 29 One he set up in Bethel,(AA) and the other in Dan.(AB) 30 And this thing became a sin;(AC) the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.[d]
31 Jeroboam built shrines(AD) on high places and appointed priests(AE) from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. 32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth(AF) month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel,(AG) sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. 33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel.(AH) So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

12 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
