God Appears Again to Solomon
9 When Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and the king’s house and all that Solomon desired to build,(A) 2 the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.(B) 3 The Lord said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea that you made before me; I have consecrated this house that you have built and put my name there forever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time.(C) 4 As for you, if you will walk before me as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances,(D) 5 then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David, saying, ‘You shall never lack a successor on the throne of Israel.’(E)
6 “If you turn aside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you but go and serve other gods and worship them,(F) 7 then I will cut Israel off from the land that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, and Israel will become a proverb and a taunt among all peoples.(G) 8 This house will become a heap of ruins;[a] everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this house?’(H) 9 Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, worshiping them and serving them; therefore the Lord brought this disaster upon them.’ ”
10 At the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king’s house,(I) 11 King Hiram of Tyre having supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress timber and gold, as much as he desired, King Solomon gave to Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.(J) 12 But when Hiram came from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, they did not please him. 13 Therefore he said, “What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?” So they are called the land of Cabul[b] to this day.(K) 14 But Hiram had sent to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold.
Other Acts of Solomon
15 This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the house of the Lord and his own house, the Millo and the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer(L) 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it down, had killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and had given it as dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife;(M) 17 so Solomon rebuilt Gezer), Lower Beth-horon,(N) 18 Baalath, Tadmor in the wilderness, within the land, 19 as well as all of Solomon’s storage cities, the cities for his chariots, the cities for his cavalry, and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.(O) 20 All the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the people of Israel(P)— 21 their descendants who were still left in the land, whom the Israelites were unable to destroy completely—these Solomon conscripted for slave labor, and so they are to this day.(Q) 22 But of the Israelites Solomon made no slaves; they were the soldiers; they were his officials, his commanders, his captains, and the commanders of his chariotry and cavalry.(R)
23 These were the chief officers who were over Solomon’s work: five hundred fifty who had charge of the people who carried on the work.(S)
24 But Pharaoh’s daughter went up from the city of David to her own house that Solomon had built for her; then he built the Millo.(T)
25 Three times a year Solomon used to offer up burnt offerings and sacrifices of well-being on the altar that he built for the Lord, offering incense[c] before the Lord. So he completed the house.(U)
Solomon’s Commercial Activity
26 King Solomon built a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea,[d] in the land of Edom.(V) 27 Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who were familiar with the sea, together with the servants of Solomon.(W) 28 They went to Ophir and imported from there four hundred twenty talents of gold that they delivered to King Solomon.(X)

9 Nadat Salomo klaar was met de bouw van de tempel, het paleis en alle andere gebouwen die hij altijd al zo graag wilde bouwen, 2,3 verscheen de Here voor de tweede keer aan hem net als eerst in Gibeon. Hij zei: ‘Ik heb uw gebed gehoord. Ik heb deze tempel, die u voor Mij hebt gebouwd, geheiligd en er voor eeuwig mijn naam aan verbonden. Ik zal er doorlopend over waken en Mij erover verheugen. 4 Als u net als uw vader David eerlijk en oprecht leeft en mijn wetten en voorschriften altijd gehoorzaamt, 5 zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat uw nakomelingen voor altijd koning over Israël zijn. Dat is ook precies wat Ik uw vader David beloofde toen Ik zei: “Van uw zonen zal er altijd één op de troon van Israël zitten.” 6 Als u of uw kinderen Mij echter de rug toekeren, afgoden gaan aanbidden en mijn wetten niet gehoorzamen, 7 zal Ik Israël uit dit land dat Ik haar heb gegeven, weghalen. En de tempel die Ik voor mijn naam heb geheiligd, zal Ik verwoesten. Dan zal Ik Israël uit dit land verjagen en alles wat haar overkomt, zal spreekwoordelijk worden voor iets dat plotseling komt en rampzalig is. 8 Deze tempel die op een eervolle plaats staat, hoog op de heuvel, zal dan een voorwerp van bespotting en belediging worden en ieder die er langs komt, zal verbaasd kijken en vragen: “Waarom heeft de Here zulke dingen gedaan met zijn land en met deze tempel?” 9 En het antwoord zal luiden: “De Israëlieten keerden de Here, hun God, die hen uit Egypte bevrijdde, de rug toe. In plaats van Hem te eren, aanbidden zij nu afgoden. Daarom heeft de Here deze ramp over hen laten komen.” ’
10 Na de twintig jaar die Salomo nodig had voor de bouw van de tempel en zijn paleis, 11,12 gaf hij twintig steden in het gebied Galilea aan koning Hiram van Tyrus als betaling voor al het cederhout en cipressenhout en het goud dat hij had geleverd voor de bouw van de tempel en het paleis. Hiram kwam vanuit Tyrus de steden bekijken, maar toen bleek dat hij daar helemaal niet zo blij mee was. 13 ‘Wat voor betaling is dit, mijn broeder?’ vroeg hij. ‘Deze steden zijn onbruikbaar!’ (Daarom worden deze steden nog steeds ‘Kabul’, dat is ‘onbruikbaar’, genoemd.) 14 Hirams reactie was niet helemaal onbegrijpelijk, want hij had Salomo zesendertighonderd kilo goud geleverd.
15 Salomo had gebruikgemaakt van zijn recht van herendienst om de tempel, zijn paleis, de burcht Millo, de muur van Jeruzalem en de steden Hazor, Megiddo en Gezer te bouwen. 16 Gezer was de stad die de farao van Egypte had ingenomen en platgebrand. De Kanaänieten die deze stad bewoonden, had hij uitgeroeid. Deze werden gebouwd in de buurt van Jeruzalem, op de Libanon en overal door het land. 20,21 Salomo haalde zijn arbeidskrachten uit de vreemde volken die hij had overwonnen, de Amorieten, Hethieten, Perizzieten, Chiwwieten en Jebusieten. Het volk Israël was er namelijk niet in geslaagd hen volledig uit te roeien tijdens de inval en verovering van Israël en zij zijn ook tot op de huidige dag nog slaven. 22 Salomo wees geen Israëlieten aan voor dit werk, hoewel zij bij hem wel dienst deden als soldaten, ambtenaren, legerofficieren, wagencommandanten en ruiters. 23 De werktroepen werden geleid door vijfhonderdvijftig Israëlitische mannen.
24 Koning Salomo liet de dochter van de farao van de Stad van David—het oude deel van Jeruzalem—verhuizen naar de nieuwe verblijven die hij voor haar had gebouwd in het paleis. Daarna bouwde hij de burcht Millo.

26 Koning Salomo had een scheepswerf in Esjon-Geber, dichtbij Elat aan de Rode Zee, in het land Edom. Daar bouwde hij een echte vloot op. 27,28 Koning Hiram stelde geoefende zeelieden ter beschikking, die Salomoʼs mensen met raad en daad terzijde stonden. Zij voeren op en neer naar Ofir en haalden goud voor koning Salomo. Het totale gewicht daarvan bedroeg twaalfduizend zeshonderd kilo.

The Lord Appears to Solomon(A)
9 When Solomon had finished(B) building the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had desired to do, 2 the Lord appeared(C) to him a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 The Lord said to him:
“I have heard(D) the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name(E) there forever. My eyes(F) and my heart will always be there.
4 “As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart(G) and uprightness, as David(H) your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws,(I) 5 I will establish(J) your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail(K) to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’
6 “But if you[a] or your descendants turn away(L) from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you[b] and go off to serve other gods(M) and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land(N) I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name.(O) Israel will then become a byword(P) and an object of ridicule(Q) among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All[c] who pass by will be appalled(R) and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’(S) 9 People will answer,(T) ‘Because they have forsaken(U) the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster(V) on them.’”
Solomon’s Other Activities(W)
10 At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built these two buildings—the temple of the Lord and the royal palace— 11 King Solomon gave twenty towns in Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, because Hiram had supplied him with all the cedar and juniper and gold(X) he wanted. 12 But when Hiram went from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. 13 “What kind of towns are these you have given me, my brother?” he asked. And he called them the Land of Kabul,[d](Y) a name they have to this day. 14 Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents[e] of gold.(Z)
15 Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted(AA) to build the Lord’s temple, his own palace, the terraces,[f](AB) the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor,(AC) Megiddo and Gezer.(AD) 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter,(AE) Solomon’s wife. 17 And Solomon rebuilt Gezer.) He built up Lower Beth Horon,(AF) 18 Baalath,(AG) and Tadmor[g] in the desert, within his land, 19 as well as all his store cities(AH) and the towns for his chariots(AI) and for his horses[h]—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.
20 There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites,(AJ) Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites(AK) (these peoples were not Israelites). 21 Solomon conscripted the descendants(AL) of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate[i](AM)—to serve as slave labor,(AN) as it is to this day. 22 But Solomon did not make slaves(AO) of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers. 23 They were also the chief officials(AP) in charge of Solomon’s projects—550 officials supervising those who did the work.
24 After Pharaoh’s daughter(AQ) had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces.(AR)
25 Three(AS) times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord, burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.
26 King Solomon also built ships(AT) at Ezion Geber,(AU) which is near Elath(AV) in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.[j] 27 And Hiram sent his men—sailors(AW) who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s men. 28 They sailed to Ophir(AX) and brought back 420 talents[k] of gold,(AY) which they delivered to King Solomon.

13 And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul unto this day.
14 And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.
15 And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the Lord, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.
17 And Solomon built Gezer, and Bethhoron the nether,
18 And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land,
19 And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.
20 And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel,
21 Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day.
22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.
23 These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon's work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.
24 But Pharaoh's daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo.
25 And three times in a year did Solomon offer burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built unto the Lord, and he burnt incense upon the altar that was before the Lord. So he finished the house.
26 And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.
27 And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.
28 And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.
