3 Solomon s-a înrudit cu Faraon, monarhul Egiptului. El a luat-o de soţie pe fiica acestuia şi a adus-o în Cetatea lui David până când a terminat de zidit palatul, Casa Domnului şi zidul din jurul Ierusalimului.
Vedenia de la Ghivon: Solomon primeşte înţelepciune
2 Poporul încă mai aducea jertfe pe înălţimi, căci încă nu fusese zidită o Casă pentru Numele Domnului. 3 Solomon Îl iubea pe Domnul, împlinind hotărârile tatălui său, David, însă aducea jertfe şi ardea tămâie pe înălţimi. 4 Regele s-a dus la Ghivon ca să aducă jertfe, pentru că acolo se afla cea mai însemnată înălţime. El a adus pe altarul de acolo o mie de arderi de tot. 5 La Ghivon, Domnul i S-a arătat lui Solomon noaptea într-un vis şi Dumnezeu i-a zis:
– Cere-Mi orice vrei să-ţi dau!
6 – Tu ai arătat o mare îndurare[a] faţă de robul Tău David, tatăl meu, a răspuns Solomon, căci a umblat înaintea Ta în credincioşie, în dreptate şi în curăţie de inimă. Tu ai arătat această mare îndurare faţă de el şi i-ai dat un fiu care stă astăzi pe tronul său. 7 Doamne, Dumnezeul meu, Tu l-ai numit rege pe slujitorul Tău în locul tatălui meu, David. Însă eu sunt tânăr şi nu ştiu să-mi îndeplinesc bine îndatoririle. 8 Slujitorul Tău se află în mijlocul poporului pe care l-ai ales, un popor atât de numeros, încât nu poate fi socotit sau numărat. 9 Dă-i slujitorului Tău o minte cu discernământ ca să pot judeca[b] poporul Tău şi să pot deosebi între bine şi rău, căci cine este în stare să judece acest popor numeros al Tău?
10 Domnului I-a plăcut cererea lui Solomon. 11 Şi Dumnezeu i-a zis:
– Pentru că ai cerut acest lucru şi nu ai cerut pentru tine nici viaţa lungă, nici bogăţii şi nici moartea duşmanilor tăi, ci ai cerut înţelepciune pentru a face dreptate, 12 voi face după cum ai cerut. Îţi voi da o minte înţeleaptă şi pricepută cum nu a avut nimeni înaintea ta şi nici nu se va mai ridica după tine nimeni asemenea ţie. 13 Mai mult, îţi voi da şi ceea ce nu ai cerut, bogăţii şi faimă, aşa încât nu va fi nici un alt rege ca tine în tot timpul vieţii tale. 14 Şi, dacă vei umbla în căile Mele, păzind legile şi poruncile Mele, aşa cum a făcut tatăl tău, David, îţi voi lungi zilele.
15 Solomon s-a trezit şi şi-a dat seama că a fost un vis. El s-a întors la Ierusalim, s-a înfăţişat înaintea Chivotului Legământului cu Domnul şi a adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de pace[c]. Apoi a dat un ospăţ pentru toţi slujitorii săi.
Înţelepciunea lui Solomon
16 Atunci au venit înaintea regelui două prostituate. 17 Cea dintâi a zis:
– Stăpânul meu, eu locuiesc împreună cu această femeie în aceeaşi casă. Eu am născut un copil, în timp ce eram cu ea în casă, 18 iar după trei zile de la naşterea fiului meu, a născut şi această femeie. Eram doar noi singure; nu mai era nici un alt străin în casă, ci doar noi două. 19 În timpul nopţii, fiul ei a murit pentru că se culcase peste el. 20 Ea s-a sculat pe la miezul nopţii, mi-a luat fiul de lângă mine, în timp ce dormeam şi l-a aşezat la sânul ei, iar pe fiul ei, care murise, l-a aşezat la sânul meu. 21 M-am sculat dimineaţa ca să-mi alăptez fiul, dar el era mort. Când m-am uitat la el cu băgare de seamă la lumina zilei, am văzut că nu era fiul pe care-l născusem.
22 – Ba nu! a zis cealaltă femeie. Fiul meu este cel viu, iar cel mort este al tău!
Dar cea dintâi a răspuns:
– Nu, nu! Fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu!
Aşa se certau ele înaintea regelui. 23 Atunci regele a zis:
– Una zice: „Fiul meu este cel viu, iar fiul tău este cel mort!“, iar cealaltă zice: „Ba nu, ci fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu!“
24 Apoi regele a poruncit: „Aduceţi-mi o sabie!“ Şi i-au adus o sabie. 25 Iar el a zis: „Tăiaţi copilul cel viu în două şi daţi-i o jumătate uneia şi o jumătate celeilalte!“
26 Atunci femeia al cărei fiu era viu s-a umplut de durere pentru fiul ei şi a zis:
– Te rog, stăpânul meu, dă-i ei copilul, dar nu-l omorî!
Cealaltă însă zicea:
– Să nu fie nici al meu, nici al tău! Tăiaţi-l în două!
27 Regele a răspuns:
– Daţi-i copilul cel viu primei femei şi nu-l omorâţi! Ea este mama lui.
28 Când a auzit verdictul dat de rege, tot Israelul s-a temut de el, pentru că şi-a dat seama că înţelepciunea lui Dumnezeu era în el, ca să facă dreptate.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)
3 Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married(B) his daughter.(C) He brought her to the City of David(D) until he finished building his palace(E) and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places,(F) because a temple had not yet been built for the Name(G) of the Lord. 3 Solomon showed his love(H) for the Lord by walking(I) according to the instructions(J) given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.(K)
4 The king went to Gibeon(L) to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared(M) to Solomon during the night in a dream,(N) and God said, “Ask(O) for whatever you want me to give you.”
6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful(P) to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son(Q) to sit on his throne this very day.
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child(R) and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen,(S) a great people, too numerous to count or number.(T) 9 So give your servant a discerning(U) heart to govern your people and to distinguish(V) between right and wrong. For who is able(W) to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked(X) for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment(Y) in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked.(Z) I will give you a wise(AA) and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not(AB) asked for—both wealth and honor(AC)—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal(AD) among kings. 14 And if you walk(AE) in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”(AF) 15 Then Solomon awoke(AG)—and he realized it had been a dream.(AH)
He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings(AI) and fellowship offerings.(AJ) Then he gave a feast(AK) for all his court.
A Wise Ruling
16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”
22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.”
But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.
23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved(AL) out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!”
But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”
27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”
28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom(AM) from God to administer justice.
