1 Pablo, llamado por la voluntad de Dios a ser apóstol de Cristo Jesús, y nuestro hermano Sóstenes,
2 a la iglesia de Dios que está en Corinto, a los que han sido santificados en Cristo Jesús y llamados a ser su santo pueblo, junto con todos los que en todas partes invocan el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Señor de ellos y de nosotros:
3 Que Dios nuestro Padre y el Señor Jesucristo os concedan gracia y paz.
Acción de gracias
4 Siempre doy gracias a Dios por vosotros, pues él, en Cristo Jesús, os ha dado su gracia. 5 Unidos a Cristo vosotros os habéis llenado de toda riqueza, tanto en palabra como en conocimiento. 6 Así se ha confirmado en vosotros nuestro testimonio acerca de Cristo, 7 de modo que no os falta ningún don espiritual mientras esperáis con ansias que se manifieste nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 8 Él os mantendrá firmes hasta el fin, para que seáis irreprochables en el día de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 9 Fiel es Dios, quien os ha llamado a tener comunión con su Hijo Jesucristo, nuestro Señor.
Divisiones en la iglesia
10 Os suplico, hermanos, en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que todos viváis en armonía y que no haya divisiones entre vosotros, sino que os mantengáis unidos en un mismo pensar y en un mismo propósito. 11 Digo esto, hermanos míos, porque algunos de la familia de Cloé me han informado de que hay rivalidades entre vosotros. 12 Me refiero a que unos dicen: «Yo sigo a Pablo»; otros afirman: «Yo, a Apolos»; otros: «Yo, a Cefas»; y otros: «Yo, a Cristo».
13 ¡Cómo! ¿Está dividido Cristo? ¿Acaso Pablo fue crucificado por vosotros? ¿O es que fuisteis bautizados en el nombre de Pablo? 14 Gracias a Dios que no bauticé a ninguno de vosotros, excepto a Crispo y a Gayo, 15 de modo que nadie puede decir que fue bautizado en mi nombre. 16 Bueno, también bauticé a la familia de Estéfanas; fuera de estos, no recuerdo haber bautizado a ningún otro. 17 Pues Cristo no me envió a bautizar, sino a predicar el evangelio, y eso sin discursos de sabiduría humana, para que la cruz de Cristo no perdiera su eficacia.
Cristo, sabiduría y poder de Dios
18 Me explico: El mensaje de la cruz es una locura para los que se pierden; en cambio, para los que se salvan, es decir, para nosotros, este mensaje es el poder de Dios. 19 Pues está escrito:
«Destruiré la sabiduría de los sabios;
frustraré la inteligencia de los inteligentes».[a]
20 ¿Dónde está el sabio? ¿Dónde el erudito? ¿Dónde el filósofo de esta época? ¿No ha convertido Dios en locura la sabiduría de este mundo? 21 Ya que Dios, en su sabio designio, dispuso que el mundo no lo conociera mediante la sabiduría humana, tuvo a bien salvar, mediante la locura de la predicación, a los que creen. 22 Los judíos piden señales milagrosas y los gentiles buscan sabiduría, 23 mientras que nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado. Este mensaje es motivo de tropiezo para los judíos, y es locura para los gentiles, 24 pero para los que Dios ha llamado, lo mismo judíos que gentiles, Cristo es el poder de Dios y la sabiduría de Dios. 25 Pues la locura de Dios es más sabia que la sabiduría humana, y la debilidad de Dios es más fuerte que la fuerza humana.
26 Hermanos, considerad vuestro propio llamamiento: No sois muchos de vosotros sabios, según criterios meramente humanos; ni sois muchos poderosos, ni muchos de noble cuna. 27 Pero Dios escogió lo insensato del mundo para avergonzar a los sabios, y escogió lo débil del mundo para avergonzar a los poderosos. 28 También escogió Dios lo más bajo y despreciado, y lo que no es nada, para anular lo que es, 29 a fin de que en su presencia nadie pueda jactarse. 30 Pero gracias a él vosotros estáis unidos a Cristo Jesús, a quien Dios ha hecho nuestra sabiduría —es decir, nuestra justificación, santificación y redención— 31 para que, como está escrito: «Si alguien ha de gloriarse, que se gloríe en el Señor».[b]

1 From Paul, called by God’s will to be an apostle of Jesus Christ, and from Sosthenes our brother.
2 To God’s church that is in Corinth:
To those who have been made holy to God in Christ Jesus, who are called to be God’s people.
Together with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place—he’s their Lord and ours!
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving for the Corinthians
4 I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus. 5 That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of knowledge, 6 in the same way that the testimony about Christ was confirmed with you. 7 The result is that you aren’t missing any spiritual gift while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also confirm your testimony about Christ until the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, and you were called by him to partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rival groups in Corinth
10 Now I encourage you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Agree with each other and don’t be divided into rival groups. Instead, be restored with the same mind and the same purpose. 11 My brothers and sisters, Chloe’s people gave me some information about you, that you’re fighting with each other. 12 What I mean is this: that each one of you says, “I belong to Paul,” “I belong to Apollos,” “I belong to Cephas,” “I belong to Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you, or were you baptized in Paul’s name? 14 Thank God that I didn’t baptize any of you, except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that nobody can say that you were baptized in my name! 16 Oh, I baptized the house of Stephanas too. Otherwise, I don’t know if I baptized anyone else. 17 Christ didn’t send me to baptize but to preach the good news. And Christ didn’t send me to preach the good news with clever words so that Christ’s cross won’t be emptied of its meaning.
Human wisdom versus the cross
18 The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved. 19 It is written in scripture: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the intelligence of the intelligent.[a] 20 Where are the wise? Where are the legal experts? Where are today’s debaters? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 In God’s wisdom, he determined that the world wouldn’t come to know him through its wisdom. Instead, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching. 22 Jews ask for signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, which is a scandal to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 24 But to those who are called—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom. 25 This is because the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
26 Look at your situation when you were called, brothers and sisters! By ordinary human standards not many were wise, not many were powerful, not many were from the upper class. 27 But God chose what the world considers foolish to shame the wise. God chose what the world considers weak to shame the strong. 28 And God chose what the world considers low-class and low-life—what is considered to be nothing—to reduce what is considered to be something to nothing. 29 So no human being can brag in God’s presence. 30 It is because of God that you are in Christ Jesus. He became wisdom from God for us. This means that he made us righteous and holy, and he delivered us. 31 This is consistent with what was written: The one who brags should brag in the Lord![b]
