Het eten van vlees dat aan de afgoden is geofferd

Nu iets over de offers aan afgoden.[a]

We denken allemaal dat we veel weten. En van veel kennis worden we trots. Maar liefde doet andere mensen goed. Als je vindt dat je veel van het geloof weet, dan weet je eigenlijk nog niet wat je zou moeten weten. Maar als je van God houdt, dan ken je God en kent God jou.

Ik wil jullie het volgende zeggen over het eten van vlees dat aan de afgoden is geofferd. We weten dat er eigenlijk geen andere goden bestaan. Want er is maar één God. Er zijn in de hemel en op de aarde natuurlijk wel heel veel zogenaamde goden en heren. Maar voor ons is er maar één God. Dat is de Vader, die alle dingen heeft gemaakt, en voor wie wij gemaakt zijn. En voor ons is er maar één Heer: Jezus Christus. Door Hem heeft God alle dingen gemaakt. Door Hem bestaan ook wij.

Maar niet alle gelovigen weten dat. Ze denken nog steeds dat de afgoden echte goden zijn. Ze doen nog steeds mee met offerfeesten en eten mee van het offervlees. Ze zijn er wel onzeker over of het wel goed is. Hun geweten heeft er moeite mee. Maar omdat hun geweten nog zwak is, luisteren ze er niet naar. Nu is het zo, dat de dingen die we wel of niet eten, ons niet helpen om dichter bij God te komen. Als we iets niet eten, doet dat onze vriendschap met God geen kwaad. En als we iets wél eten, maakt dat onze vriendschap met God niet beter.

Maar let hierop: als jullie iets wél of juist níet eten, mag dat niet slecht zijn voor het geloof van de gelovigen die dit allemaal nog niet zo goed weten. 10 Stel dat jij weet hoe het zit met offervlees. En stel dat iemand jou in de tempel van een afgod offervlees ziet eten. Als hij nog niet zo goed weet hoe het zit, zal hij denken dat het goed is om mee te doen met de offerfeesten voor de afgoden. 11 Dan loopt zíjn geloof schade op, doordat jíj weet hoe het zit met het eten van offervlees. Dat is heel erg, want hij is een broeder. Christus is ook voor hém gestorven. 12 Op die manier doe je verkeerd tegen die broeder. Je beschadigt zijn geweten dat nog zwak is. En als je verkeerd doet tegen een broeder, doe je verkeerd tegen Christus. 13 Als wat ik eet slecht is voor het geloof van mijn broeder, wil ik liever voor eeuwig geen vlees meer eten. Want ik wil niet dat door iets wat ik eet, het geloof van mijn broeder beschadigd wordt.

Food Sacrificed to Idols

With regard to food sacrificed to idols, we know that “we all have knowledge.”[a] Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If someone thinks he knows something, he does not yet know to the degree that he needs to know. But if someone loves God, he[b] is known by God.[c]

With regard then to eating food sacrificed to idols, we know that “an idol in this world is nothing,” and that “there is no God but one.”[d] If after all there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we live, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we live.[e]

But this knowledge is not shared by all. And some, by being accustomed to idols in former times, eat this food as an idol sacrifice, and their conscience, because it is weak, is defiled. Now food will not bring us close to God. We are no worse if we do not eat and no better if we do. But be careful that this liberty of yours does not become a hindrance to the weak. 10 For if someone weak sees you who possess knowledge dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience be “strengthened”[f] to eat food offered to idols? 11 So by your knowledge the weak brother or sister,[g] for whom Christ died, is destroyed.[h] 12 If you sin against your brothers or sisters[i] in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 For this reason, if food causes my brother or sister to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause one of them[j] to sin.

Comida sacrificada a ídolos

E agora, no que diz respeito ao assunto de comer alimentos que tenham sido sacrificados aos ídolos, todos parecemos saber o que está certo. Ainda que a fama de muita sabedoria torne as pessoas importantes, o que é realmente construtivo é o amor. Se alguém pensa que tem a resposta para todas as questões não está mais do que a revelar a sua ignorância. A pessoa que ama a Deus é aquela que Deus conhece.

Portanto, quanto a esse assunto, se devemos comer carne sacrificada previamente aos ídolos, nós sabemos que um ídolo não é coisa nenhuma. Só existe um Deus e nenhum outro. Segundo muita gente, existe uma quantidade de deuses, tanto nos céus como na Terra. Contudo, sabemos bem que há um só Deus, o Pai, a quem pertencem todas as coisas, e que nos fez para sermos dele. Também há um só Senhor, Jesus Cristo, que criou igualmente todas as coisas e nos dá a vida.

No entanto, alguns cristãos não compreendem isto. Durante toda a sua vida habituaram-se a pensar que a comida oferecida aos ídolos é realmente consagrada a deuses reais. E agora ao comerem tais alimentos isso perturba-os e fere a sua consciência sensível. É verdade que não alcançamos o favor de Deus por aquilo que comemos. Não nos tornamos piores por não comermos, nem melhores por comermos. Mas tenham cuidado ao usarem dessa liberdade de comerem seja do que for, para que não levem a pecar algum irmão cristão cuja consciência seja mais fraca.

10 Vejam o que pode acontecer se um crente fraco, que pensa ser mal comer desse tal alimento, vos vir a comer num templo de ídolos. No fundo, vocês sabem que não há mal nisso, mas ele será encorajado a violar a sua consciência, comendo aquilo que foi sacrificado a um ídolo, embora continuando a sentir que está a agir mal. 11 Dessa maneira, vocês que sabem não haver mal nisso, tornam-se responsáveis pelo dano espiritual causado a esse irmão cuja consciência é fraca, mas por quem Cristo, afinal, também morreu. 12 E pecar contra um irmão vosso, dando-lhe ocasião de fazer algo que pensa ser errado, é pecar contra Cristo. 13 Portanto, se o comer carne que tenha sido consagrada aos ídolos fizer com que o meu irmão em Cristo venha a pecar, nunca mais tomarei desse alimento para não ser uma razão de ele cair.

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols

Now about food sacrificed to idols:(A) We know that “We all possess knowledge.”(B) But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something(C) do not yet know as they ought to know.(D) But whoever loves God is known by God.[a](E)

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols:(F) We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world”(G) and that “There is no God but one.”(H) For even if there are so-called gods,(I) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God,(J) the Father,(K) from whom all things came(L) and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord,(M) Jesus Christ, through whom all things came(N) and through whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge.(O) Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak,(P) it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God;(Q) we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block(R) to the weak.(S) 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?(T) 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed(U) by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them(V) in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.(W) 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.(X)
