Dreptul lucrătorului creştin

Nu(A) sunt eu slobod? Nu(B) sunt eu apostol? N-am văzut eu pe Isus, Domnul nostru? Nu(C) sunteţi voi lucrul meu în Domnul? Dacă nu sunt apostol pentru alţii, sunt măcar pentru voi; căci voi sunteţi pecetea(D) apostoliei mele în Domnul. Iată răspunsul meu de apărare împotriva celor ce mă cercetează. N-avem(E) dreptul să mâncăm şi să bem? N-avem dreptul să ducem cu noi o soră, care să fie nevasta noastră, cum fac ceilalţi apostoli şi fraţii(F) Domnului, şi Chifa?(G) Ori numai eu şi Barnaba n-avem(H) dreptul să nu lucrăm? Cine merge(I) la război pe cheltuiala sa? Cine sădeşte(J) o vie şi nu mănâncă din rodul ei? Cine paşte(K) o turmă şi nu mănâncă din laptele turmei? Lucrurile acestea le spun după felul oamenilor? Nu le spune şi Legea? În adevăr, în Legea lui Moise este scris: „Să(L) nu legi gura boului care treieră grâul!” Pe boi îi are în vedere Dumnezeu aici? 10 Sau vorbeşte El înadins pentru noi? Da, pentru noi a fost scris astfel, căci cine(M) ară trebuie să are cu nădejde şi cine treieră grâul trebuie să-l treiere cu nădejdea că va avea parte de el. 11 Dacă(N) am semănat printre voi bunurile duhovniceşti, mare lucru este dacă vom secera bunurile voastre vremelnice? 12 Dacă se bucură alţii de acest drept asupra voastră, nu ni se cade cu mult mai mult nouă? Dar(O) noi nu ne-am folosit de dreptul acesta, ci răbdăm totul, ca(P) să nu punem vreo piedică Evangheliei lui Hristos. 13 Nu(Q) ştiţi că cei ce îndeplinesc slujbele sfinte sunt hrăniţi din lucrurile de la Templu şi că cei ce slujesc altarului au parte de la altar? 14 Tot aşa, Domnul(R) a rânduit ca(S) cei ce propovăduiesc Evanghelia să trăiască din Evanghelie.

Pavel nu s-a folosit de dreptul lui

15 Dar eu nu m-am(T) folosit de niciunul din aceste drepturi. Şi nu vă scriu aceste lucruri ca să cer să se facă aşa cu mine, căci aş vrea(U) mai bine să mor decât să-mi ia cineva pricina mea de laudă. 16 Dacă vestesc Evanghelia, nu este pentru mine o pricină de laudă, căci trebuie(V) s-o vestesc, şi vai de mine, dacă nu vestesc Evanghelia! 17 Dacă fac lucrul acesta de bunăvoie, am(W) o răsplată. Chiar dacă-l fac de silă, este o isprăvnicie care mi-a(X) fost încredinţată. 18 Care este atunci răsplata mea? Este(Y) să vestesc fără plată Evanghelia pe care o vestesc şi să nu(Z) mă folosesc de dreptul meu în Evanghelie. 19 Căci, măcar că sunt slobod(AA) faţă de toţi, m-am făcut robul tuturor(AB), ca(AC) să câştig pe cei mai mulţi. 20 Cu iudeii(AD) m-am făcut ca un iudeu, ca să câştig pe iudei; cu cei ce sunt sub Lege m-am făcut ca şi când aş fi fost sub Lege (măcar că nu sunt sub Lege), ca să câştig pe cei ce sunt sub Lege; 21 cu cei ce(AE) sunt fără Lege(AF) m-am făcut ca şi cum aş fi fost fără lege (măcar că nu sunt fără(AG) o lege a lui Dumnezeu, ci sunt sub legea lui Hristos), ca să câştig pe cei fără lege. 22 Am fost slab cu cei(AH) slabi, ca să câştig pe cei slabi. M-am făcut tuturor(AI) totul, ca(AJ), oricum, să mântuiesc pe unii din ei. 23 Fac totul pentru Evanghelie, ca să am şi eu parte de ea.

Felul de luptă al lui Pavel

24 Nu ştiţi că cei ce aleargă în locul de alergare toţi aleargă, dar numai unul capătă premiul? Alergaţi dar în aşa(AK) fel ca să căpătaţi premiul! 25 Toţi cei ce se luptă(AL) la jocurile de obşte se supun la tot felul de înfrânări. Şi ei fac lucrul acesta ca să capete o cunună care se poate veşteji: noi să facem lucrul acesta pentru o cunună care nu se poate veşteji(AM). 26 Eu, deci, alerg, dar nu ca şi cum n-aş(AN) şti încotro alerg. Mă lupt cu pumnul, dar nu ca unul care loveşte în vânt. 27 Ci(AO) mă port aspru cu trupul meu şi-l ţin în stăpânire(AP), ca nu cumva, după ce am propovăduit altora, eu însumi să fiu lepădat(AQ).

The Rights of an Apostle

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you, for you are the confirming sign[a] of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who examine me. Do we not have the right to financial support?[b] Do we not have the right to the company of a believing wife, like the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?[c] Or do only Barnabas and I lack the right not to work? Who ever serves in the army at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Who tends a flock and does not consume its milk? Am I saying these things only on the basis of common sense,[d] or does the law not say this as well? For it is written in the law of Moses, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.”[e] God is not concerned here about oxen, is he? 10 Or is he not surely speaking for our benefit? It was written for us, because the one plowing and threshing ought to work in hope of enjoying the harvest. 11 If we sowed spiritual blessings among you, is it too much to reap material things from you? 12 If others receive this right from you, are we not more deserving?

But we have not made use of this right. Instead we endure everything so that we may not be a hindrance to the gospel of Christ. 13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple[f] eat food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar receive a part of the offerings? 14 In the same way the Lord commanded those who proclaim the gospel to receive their living by the gospel. 15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing these things so that something will be done for me.[g] In fact, it would be better for me to die than—no one will deprive me of my reason for boasting![h] 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have no reason for boasting, because I am compelled to do this. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward. But if I do it unwillingly, I am entrusted with a responsibility. 18 What then is my reward? That when I preach the gospel I may offer the gospel free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights in the gospel.

19 For since I am free from all I can make myself a slave to all, in order to gain even more people.[i] 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew to gain the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law)[j] to gain those under the law. 21 To those free from the law I became like one free from the law (though I am not free from God’s law but under the law of Christ) to gain those free from the law. 22 To the weak I became weak in order to gain the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that by all means I may save some.

23 I do all these things because of the gospel, so that I can be a participant in it.

24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

26 So I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air. 27 Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.

  8. 1 Corinthians 9:15 tc The reading τὸ καύχημά μου οὐδεὶς κενώσει (ēto kauchēma mou oudeis kenōsei, “than—no one will deprive me of my reason for boasting!”) is syntactically abrupt, but fully in keeping with Pauline style. It is supported by P46 א* B D*,c 33 1739 1881 as well as early patristic authors. Most witnesses, especially the later ones (א2 C D2 Ψ M lat), have a significantly smoother reading than this: τὸ καύχημά μου ἵνα τις κενώσῃ (or κενώσει); ē to kauchēma mou hina tis kenōsē (or kenōsei), “than that anyone should deprive me of my boasting.” The simple replacement of οὐδείς with ἵνα essentially accomplishes the smoothing out of the text, and as such the ἵνα reading is suspect. Not only is the harder reading in keeping with Pauline style, but it is also found in the earlier and better witnesses.sn Paul breaks off his thought at mid-sentence (indicated by the dash in the translation) and it is somewhat difficult to determine his reason for boasting. Most likely Paul would rather die than be deprived of the boast that he had offered the gospel free of charge even though as an apostle he had the right to such support (9:14). Did he say this as a way of criticizing his opponents? Perhaps only indirectly. His focus has more to do with not hindering the gospel than what his opponents were doing (9:12).

The phrase may have dropped out accidentally through homoioteleuton (note that both the preceding phrase and the parenthesis end in ὑπὸ νόμον [hupo nomon, “under the law”]), or intentionally by overscrupulous scribes who felt that the statement “I myself am not under the law” could have led to license.

A Pattern of Self-Denial

Am (A)I not an apostle? Am I not free? (B)Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? (C)Are you not my work in the Lord? If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are (D)the [a]seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

My defense to those who examine me is this: (E)Do we have no [b]right to eat and drink? Do we have no right to take along [c]a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, (F)the brothers of the Lord, and (G)Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I (H)who have no right to refrain from working? Who ever (I)goes to war at his own expense? Who (J)plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who (K)tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock?

Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses, (L)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? 10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that (M)he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 (N)If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 12 If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?

(O)Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things (P)lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 (Q)Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the (R)temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? 14 Even so (S)the Lord has commanded (T)that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.

15 But (U)I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for (V)it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for (W)necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, (X)I have a reward; but if against my will, (Y)I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That (Z)when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel [d]of Christ without charge, that I (AA)may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

Serving All Men

19 For though I am (AB)free from all men, (AC)I have made myself a servant to all, (AD)that I might win the more; 20 and (AE)to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the [e]law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 (AF)to (AG)those who are without law, as without law (AH)(not being without [f]law toward God, but under [g]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 (AI)to the weak I became [h]as weak, that I might win the weak. (AJ)I have become all things to all men, (AK)that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

Striving for a Crown

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? (AL)Run in such a way that you may [i]obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize [j]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for (AM)an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: (AN)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 (AO)But I discipline my body and (AP)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become (AQ)disqualified.
