Gifts for Building the Temple
29 King David spoke to all the Israelites who were gathered. He said, “God chose my son Solomon. Solomon is young and hasn’t yet learned what he needs to know. But the work is important. This palace is not for people. It is for the Lord God. 2 I have done my best to prepare for building the Temple of God. I have given gold for the things made of gold. I have given silver for the things made of silver. I have given bronze for the things made of bronze. I have given iron for the things made of iron. I have given wood for the things made of wood. I have given onyx for the settings and turquoise. I have given gems of many different colors. I have given valuable stones and white marble. I have given much of all these things. 3 I have already given this for the Temple. But now I am also giving my own treasures of gold and silver. I am doing this because I really want the Temple of my God to be built. 4 I have given about 220,000 pounds of pure gold from Ophir. And I have given about 520,000 pounds of pure silver. They will be used to cover the walls of the buildings. 5 They will also be used for all the gold and silver work. Skilled men may use the gold and silver to make things for the Temple. Now, who is ready to give himself to the service of the Lord today?”
6 The family leaders and the leaders of the tribes of Israel gave their valuable things. The commanders of 1,000 men and of 100 men gave their valuable things. And the leaders responsible for the king’s work gave their valuable things. 7 These are the things they gave for the Temple of God: about 380,000 pounds of gold, about 750,000 pounds of silver, about 1,350,000 pounds of bronze and about 7,500,000 pounds of iron. 8 People who had valuable gems gave them to the treasury of the Temple of the Lord. Jehiel, from the Gershon family, took care of the valuable gems. 9 The leaders gave freely and completely to the Lord. The people were happy to see their leaders give so gladly. King David was also very happy.
David’s Prayer
10 David praised the Lord in front of all of the people who were gathered. He said:
“We praise you, Lord.
You are the God of our father Israel.
We praise you forever and ever.
11 Lord, you are great and powerful.
You have glory, victory and honor.
Everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you.
The kingdom belongs to you, Lord.
You are the ruler over everything.
12 Riches and honor come from you.
You rule everything.
You have the power and strength
to make anyone great and strong.
13 Now, our God, we thank you.
And we praise your glorious name.
14 “These things did not really come from me and my people.
Everything comes from you.
We have given you back what you gave us.
15 We are like foreigners and strangers.
All our ancestors were also foreigners and strangers.
Our time on earth is like a shadow.
There is no hope.
16 Lord our God, we have gathered all this to build your Temple.
We will build it for worship to you.
But everything has come from you.
Everything belongs to you.
17 I know, my God, that you test people’s hearts.
You are happy when people do what is right.
I was happy to give all these things.
I gave with an honest heart.
Your people gathered here are happy to give to you.
I am happy to see their giving.
18 Lord, you are the God of our ancestors.
You are the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Please help your people to want to serve you always.
And help them to want to obey you always.
19 Give my son Solomon a strong desire to serve you.
Help him always obey your commands, laws and rules.
Help him build the Temple
for which I have prepared.”
20 Then David said to all the people who were gathered, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God their ancestors worshiped. They bowed to the ground to give honor to the Lord and the king.
Solomon Becomes King
21 The next day the people made sacrifices to the Lord. They offered burnt offerings to him. They offered 1,000 bulls, 1,000 male sheep and 1,000 male lambs. They also brought drink offerings. Many sacrifices were made for all the people of Israel. 22 That day the people ate and drank with much joy. And the Lord was with them.
And they made David’s son Solomon king for the second time. They poured olive oil on Solomon to appoint him king. And they poured oil on Zadok to appoint him as priest. They did this in the presence of the Lord. 23 Then Solomon sat on the Lord’s throne as king. He took his father David’s place. Solomon was very successful. And all the people of Israel obeyed him. 24 All the leaders and soldiers and King David’s sons accepted Solomon as king. They promised to obey him. 25 The Lord made Solomon great before all the Israelites. The Lord gave Solomon much honor. No king of Israel before Solomon had such honor.
David’s Death
26 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. 27 He was king for 40 years. He ruled in the city of Hebron for 7 years. And he ruled in Jerusalem for 33 years. 28 David died when he was old. He had lived a good, long life. He had received many riches and honors. And David’s son Solomon became king after him.
29 Everything King David did as king, from beginning to end, is recorded. Those things are written in the records of Samuel the seer. And they are in the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer. 30 Those writings tell what David did as king of Israel. They tell about his power and all that happened to him. And they tell what happened to Israel and all the kingdoms around them.

29 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.
2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.
3 Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house.
4 Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:
5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?
6 Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly,
7 And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.
8 And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.
9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
10 Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
11 Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
16 O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.
17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
18 O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:
19 And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.
20 And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the Lord your God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the Lord, and the king.
21 And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings unto the Lord, on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:
22 And did eat and drink before the Lord on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the Lord to be the chief governor, and Zadok to be priest.
23 Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
24 And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
25 And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.
26 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
27 And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
29 Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
30 With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.

Gifts for Building the Temple
29 Then King David turned to the entire assembly and said, “My son Solomon, whom God has clearly chosen as the next king of Israel, is still young and inexperienced. The work ahead of him is enormous, for the Temple he will build is not for mere mortals—it is for the Lord God himself! 2 Using every resource at my command, I have gathered as much as I could for building the Temple of my God. Now there is enough gold, silver, bronze, iron, and wood, as well as great quantities of onyx, other precious stones, costly jewels, and all kinds of fine stone and marble.
3 “And now, because of my devotion to the Temple of my God, I am giving all of my own private treasures of gold and silver to help in the construction. This is in addition to the building materials I have already collected for his holy Temple. 4 I am donating more than 112 tons of gold[a] from Ophir and 262 tons of refined silver[b] to be used for overlaying the walls of the buildings 5 and for the other gold and silver work to be done by the craftsmen. Now then, who will follow my example and give offerings to the Lord today?”
6 Then the family leaders, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the generals and captains of the army,[c] and the king’s administrative officers all gave willingly. 7 For the construction of the Temple of God, they gave about 188 tons of gold,[d] 10,000 gold coins,[e] 375 tons of silver,[f] 675 tons of bronze,[g] and 3,750 tons of iron.[h] 8 They also contributed numerous precious stones, which were deposited in the treasury of the house of the Lord under the care of Jehiel, a descendant of Gershon. 9 The people rejoiced over the offerings, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord, and King David was filled with joy.
David’s Prayer of Praise
10 Then David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly:
“O Lord, the God of our ancestor Israel,[i] may you be praised forever and ever! 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. 12 Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength.
13 “O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name! 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us! 15 We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace.
16 “O Lord our God, even this material we have gathered to build a Temple to honor your holy name comes from you! It all belongs to you! 17 I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. You know I have done all this with good motives, and I have watched your people offer their gifts willingly and joyously.
18 “O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. 19 Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.”
20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Give praise to the Lord your God!” And the entire assembly praised the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and they bowed low and knelt before the Lord and the king.
Solomon Named as King
21 The next day they brought 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 male lambs as burnt offerings to the Lord. They also brought liquid offerings and many other sacrifices on behalf of all Israel. 22 They feasted and drank in the Lord’s presence with great joy that day.
And again they crowned David’s son Solomon as their new king. They anointed him before the Lord as their leader, and they anointed Zadok as priest. 23 So Solomon took the throne of the Lord in place of his father, David, and he succeeded in everything, and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officials, the warriors, and the sons of King David pledged their loyalty to King Solomon. 25 And the Lord exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel, and he gave Solomon greater royal splendor than any king in Israel before him.
Summary of David’s Reign
26 So David son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 He reigned over Israel for forty years, seven of them in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. 28 He died at a ripe old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor. Then his son Solomon ruled in his place.
29 All the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in The Record of Samuel the Seer, The Record of Nathan the Prophet, and The Record of Gad the Seer. 30 These accounts include the mighty deeds of his reign and everything that happened to him and to Israel and to all the surrounding kingdoms.

29 Puis le roi David dit à toute l’assemblée : Mon fils Salomon, le seul que Dieu ait choisi, est jeune et inexpérimenté, alors que l’ouvrage est immense, car ce n’est pas pour un homme qu’il s’agit de construire un palais, mais bien pour l’Eternel Dieu. 2 Quant à moi, j’ai consacré tous mes efforts à préparer pour le temple de mon Dieu de l’or, de l’argent, du bronze, du fer et du bois pour tout ce qui est à fabriquer avec ces divers matériaux. J’ai préparé aussi des pierres d’onyx et des pierres à enchâsser, des pierres brillantes et de diverses couleurs, toutes sortes de pierres précieuses et des blocs de marbre blanc en abondance[a]. 3 De plus, par amour pour le temple de Dieu, je donne pour sa construction des biens précieux en or et en argent que je possède personnellement, en plus de tout ce que j’ai préparé pour le sanctuaire. 4 Il y a dans mes réserves cent tonnes d’or pur d’Ophir[b] et deux cent cinquante tonnes d’argent affiné pour recouvrir les parois des bâtiments. 5 Cet or et cet argent sont destinés à la confection de tout ce qui doit être en or et en argent, ainsi qu’à tous les travaux que les artisans auront à exécuter. Les dons du peuple pour la construction du Temple
6 Alors les chefs des groupes familiaux et des tribus d’Israël, les chefs des « milliers » et des « centaines » et les responsables des affaires du roi offrirent des dons volontaires. 7 Ils remirent spontanément pour le temple de Dieu cent soixante-dix tonnes d’or, dix mille pièces d’or, plus de trois cents tonnes d’argent, quelque six cents tonnes de bronze et plus de trois mille tonnes de fer. 8 Ceux qui possédaient des pierres précieuses les confièrent à Yehiel le Guershonite pour le trésor du temple de l’Eternel. 9 Le peuple se réjouit de ses dons volontaires, car c’était d’un cœur sans partage qu’ils les avaient faits à l’Eternel. Le roi David en éprouva lui aussi une très grande joie.
Prière de reconnaissance
10 David bénit l’Eternel devant toute l’assemblée en disant :
Béni sois-tu à tout jamais, ╵ô Eternel,
Dieu de notre ancêtre Israël !
11 A toi, Eternel, appartiennent ╵la grandeur, la puissance ╵et la magnificence,
et la gloire et la majesté.
Car tout ce qui est dans le ciel ╵et sur la terre ╵est à toi, Eternel.
C’est à toi qu’appartient le règne,
tu es le souverain ╵au-dessus de tout être[c].
12 Et c’est de toi que viennent ╵la richesse et la gloire.
Tu domines sur tout
et dans ta main résident ╵la force et la puissance,
tu détiens le pouvoir ╵d’élever qui tu veux ╵et de le rendre fort.
13 C’est pourquoi, notre Dieu, ╵nous te louons,
nous célébrons ta gloire.
14 Car, qui donc suis-je,
et qui donc est mon peuple
pour avoir les moyens ╵de t’offrir de tels dons ?
Tout cela vient de toi,
et c’est de ta main même ╵que nous avons reçu ╵ce que nous te donnons.
15 Nous sommes devant toi ╵comme des étrangers, des hôtes, ╵tout comme nos ancêtres.
Notre vie sur la terre ╵est aussi éphémère ╵qu’une ombre passagère, ╵qui passe sans espoir.
16 Eternel, notre Dieu, ╵c’est de ta main que vient ╵toute cette fortune
que nous venons de réunir ╵pour te bâtir un temple ╵qui portera ton nom, ╵toi qui es saint.
Tout cela t’appartient.
17 Je le sais, ô mon Dieu, ╵tu sondes notre cœur
et tu as du plaisir ╵lorsque quelqu’un est droit.
Eh bien, c’est d’un cœur droit ╵que je t’ai apporté ╵tous ces dons volontaires,
et j’ai vu avec joie ╵ton peuple ici présent ╵t’apporter ses dons volontaires.
18 O Eternel, Dieu d’Abraham, ╵d’Isaac et d’Israël, nos pères,
conserve pour toujours ╵dans le cœur de ton peuple ╵ces dispositions, ces pensées,

L’onction royale de Salomon
20 Là-dessus, David dit à toute l’assemblée : Bénissez l’Eternel, votre Dieu !
Alors toute l’assemblée loua l’Eternel, le Dieu de ses ancêtres. Ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant l’Eternel et devant le roi. 21 Le lendemain, ils offrirent des sacrifices et des holocaustes à l’Eternel : mille taureaux, mille béliers et mille agneaux, accompagnés des offrandes de vin requises[e] ; et ils offrirent un grand nombre de sacrifices pour tout Israël. 22 Ils mangèrent et burent ce jour-là devant l’Eternel dans de grandes réjouissances. Pour la seconde fois[f], ils proclamèrent roi Salomon, fils de David, et lui conférèrent l’onction au nom de l’Eternel pour être leur chef. Ils établirent aussi par l’onction Tsadoq comme prêtre. 23 Salomon prit place sur le trône de l’Eternel, pour régner à la place de son père David. Il l’occupa avec succès et tout Israël lui obéit. 24 Tous les chefs, et les soldats, et même tous les fils du roi David se soumirent à lui. 25 L’Eternel éleva au plus haut point le prestige de Salomon aux yeux de tout Israël, et il rendit son règne plus éclatant que celui de tous ses prédécesseurs, comme roi sur Israël.
La mort de David(A)
26 David, fils d’Isaï, avait régné sur tout Israël. 27 Il avait régné quarante ans sur Israël, sept ans à Hébron[g] et trente-trois ans à Jérusalem[h].
28 Et il mourut au terme d’une heureuse vieillesse, rassasié de jours, de richesses et de gloire. Son fils Salomon lui succéda sur le trône.
29 Les faits et gestes du roi David, des premiers aux derniers, sont cités dans les Annales du prophète Samuel, dans les Annales du prophète Nathan, et dans les Annales du prophète Gad. 30 On y raconte tout son règne, sa puissance, et tout ce qui lui est arrivé, ainsi qu’à Israël, et à tous les royaumes de la région.
