27 And [these] are the children of Israel after their number, the chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in every matter of the divisions, which came in and went out month by month throughout the months of the year; in every division were twenty-four thousand.
2 Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
3 He was of the children of Pherez, the head of all the captains of the hosts for the first month.
4 And over the division of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite; and in his division was Mikloth ruler; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
5 The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah (the son of Jehoiada, a principal officer): [he was] head; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
6 This Benaiah was a mighty man among the thirty, and above the thirty; and in his division was Ammizabad his son.
7 The fourth for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
8 The fifth for the fifth month was the captain Shamhuth the Jizrahite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
9 The sixth for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
10 The seventh for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
11 The eighth for the eighth month was Sibbechai the Hushathite, of the Zarhites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
12 The ninth for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjaminites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
13 The tenth for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zarhites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
14 The eleventh for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
15 The twelfth for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
16 And over the tribes of Israel were: for the Reubenites Eliezer the son of Zichri was the prince; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maachah;
17 for the Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;
18 for Judah, Elihu of the brethren of David; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;
19 for Zebulun, Jishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel;
20 for the children of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Azaziah; for the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah;
21 for the half [tribe] of Manasseh in Gilead, Jiddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner;
22 for Dan, Azareel the son of Jeroham. These were the princes of the tribes of Israel.
23 And David took not their number from twenty years old and under; for Jehovah had said he would increase Israel as the stars of heaven.
24 Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he did not finish; and there fell wrath for it upon Israel; and the number was not put in the account of the chronicles of king David.
25 And over the king's treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel; and over the storehouses in the country, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers was Jonathan the son of Uzziah.
26 And over them that worked in the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub.
27 And over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; and over what was in the vineyards of stores of wine was Zabdi the Shiphmite:
28 and over the olive-trees and the sycamore-trees that were in the lowland was Baal-hanan the Gederite; and over the cellars of oil was Joash.
29 And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; and over the herds in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai.
30 And over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; and over the asses was Jehdiah the Meronothite.
31 And over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagarite. All these were comptrollers of the substance which was king David's.
32 And Jonathan, David's uncle, was counsellor, a wise man, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons;
33 and Ahithophel was the king's counsellor; and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend;
34 and after Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar; and Joab was captain of the king's army.

The Military Divisions
27 This is the list of the people of Israel, the heads of families, the commanders of the thousands and the hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went, month after month throughout the year, each division numbering twenty-four thousand:
2 Jashobeam son of Zabdiel was in charge of the first division in the first month; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 3 He was a descendant of Perez, and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month. 4 Dodai the Ahohite was in charge of the division of the second month; Mikloth was the chief officer of his division. In his division were twenty-four thousand. 5 The third commander, for the third month, was Benaiah son of the priest Jehoiada, as chief; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 6 This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the Thirty and in command of the Thirty; his son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.[a] 7 Asahel brother of Joab was fourth, for the fourth month, and his son Zebadiah after him; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 8 The fifth commander, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth, the Izrahite; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 9 Sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 10 Seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, of the Ephraimites; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 11 Eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 12 Ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjaminite; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 13 Tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai of Netophah, of the Zerahites; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 14 Eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Pirathon, of the Ephraimites; in his division were twenty-four thousand. 15 Twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; in his division were twenty-four thousand.
Leaders of Tribes
16 Over the tribes of Israel, for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zichri was chief officer; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah; 17 for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; 18 for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael; 19 for Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel; 20 for the Ephraimites, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah; 21 for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner; 22 for Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 23 David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count them, but did not finish; yet wrath came upon Israel for this, and the number was not entered into the account of the Annals of King David.
Other Civic Officials
25 Over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth son of Adiel. Over the treasuries in the country, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan son of Uzziah. 26 Over those who did the work of the field, tilling the soil, was Ezri son of Chelub. 27 Over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite. Over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite. 28 Over the olive and sycomore trees in the Shephelah was Baal-hanan the Gederite. Over the stores of oil was Joash. 29 Over the herds that pastured in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite. Over the herds in the valleys was Shaphat son of Adlai. 30 Over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite. Over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite. Over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. 31 All these were stewards of King David’s property.
32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counsellor, being a man of understanding and a scribe; Jehiel son of Hachmoni attended the king’s sons. 33 Ahithophel was the king’s counsellor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. 34 After Ahithophel came Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army.

Army Divisions
27 This is the list of the Israelites—heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and their officers, who served the king in all that concerned the army divisions that were on duty month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.
2 In charge of the first division, for the first month, was Jashobeam(A) son of Zabdiel. There were 24,000 men in his division. 3 He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army officers for the first month.
4 In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai(B) the Ahohite; Mikloth was the leader of his division. There were 24,000 men in his division.
5 The third army commander, for the third month, was Benaiah(C) son of Jehoiada the priest. He was chief and there were 24,000 men in his division. 6 This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and was over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.
7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel(D) the brother of Joab; his son Zebadiah was his successor. There were 24,000 men in his division.
8 The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth(E) the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira(F) the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez(G) the Pelonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbekai(H) the Hushathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
12 The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer(I) the Anathothite, a Benjamite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
13 The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai(J) the Netophathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah(K) the Pirathonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai(L) the Netophathite, from the family of Othniel.(M) There were 24,000 men in his division.

16 The leaders of the tribes of Israel:
over the Reubenites: Eliezer son of Zikri;
over the Simeonites: Shephatiah son of Maakah;
17 over Levi: Hashabiah(N) son of Kemuel;
over Aaron: Zadok;(O)
18 over Judah: Elihu, a brother of David;
over Issachar: Omri son of Michael;
19 over Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah;
over Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;
20 over the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah;
over half the tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;
21 over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah;

22 over Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham.
These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23 David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less,(P) because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars(Q) in the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering,(R) and the number was not entered in the book[a] of the annals of King David.
The King’s Overseers
25 Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses.
Jonathan son of Uzziah was in charge of the storehouses in the outlying districts, in the towns, the villages and the watchtowers.
26 Ezri son of Kelub was in charge of the workers who farmed the land.
27 Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards.
Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.
28 Baal-Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore-fig(S) trees in the western foothills.
Joash was in charge of the supplies of olive oil.
29 Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds grazing in Sharon.(T)
Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30 Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels.
Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.
31 Jaziz the Hagrite(U) was in charge of the flocks.
All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.
32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hakmoni took care of the king’s sons.
33 Ahithophel(V) was the king’s counselor.
Hushai(W) the Arkite was the king’s confidant. 34 Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar.(X)
Joab(Y) was the commander of the royal army.

27 Het Israëlitische leger was verdeeld in twaalf regimenten van elk vierentwintigduizend man. Daarbij waren de officieren en de administratieve staf inbegrepen. Gedurende één maand per jaar werd elk onderdeel voor actieve dienst opgeroepen. Hier volgt een lijst van de regimenten en hun commandanten. 2,3 De commandant van de eerste afdeling was Jasobam, de zoon van Zabdiël en nakomeling van Peres. Hij stond aan het hoofd van vierentwintigduizend man en zijn onderdeel kwam in de eerste maand van het jaar op voor actieve dienst. 4 De commandant van de tweede afdeling was Dodai, een nakomeling van Ahoch. In de tweede maand van het jaar kwamen zijn vierentwintigduizend mannen op voor actieve dienst. Mikloth was zijn ondercommandant. 5,6 De commandant van het derde regiment was Benaja. Zijn vierentwintigduizend mannen kwamen de derde maand van het jaar in actieve dienst. Hij was een zoon van de hogepriester Jojada en stond aan het hoofd van de dertig hoogste officieren in Davids leger. Zijn zoon Ammizabad was ondercommandant. 7 De commandant van het vierde regiment was Asaël, de broer van Joab. Zijn zoon Zebadja nam later het commando van hem over. Hij en zijn vierentwintigduizend mannen deden actieve dienst in de vierde maand van het jaar. 8 De commandant van het vijfde regiment was Samhuth uit Jizrah. Zijn vierentwintigduizend manschappen waren in de vijfde maand in actieve dienst. 9 Ira, de zoon van Ikkes uit Tekoa, was commandant van het zesde regiment. Onder zijn commando kwamen in de negende maand van het jaar vierentwintigduizend mannen in actieve dienst. 13 De commandant van het tiende regiment was Maharai, de Netofathiet uit de familie van Zerach en de tiende maand van het jaar was de maand waarin hij en zijn vierentwintigduizend mannen in actieve dienst kwamen. 14 De commandant van het elfde regiment was de Pirathoniet Benaja uit het geslacht van Efraïm. Hij en zijn vierentwintigduizend mannen kwamen in de elfde maand van het jaar op. 15 Commandant van het twaalfde regiment was de Netofathiet Heldai, een nakomeling van Othniël, die in de twaalfde maand van het jaar met zijn vierentwintigduizend manschappen in actieve dienst kwam.
16-22 Aan het hoofd van de stammen van Israël stonden in die tijd de volgende mensen: Eliëzer, de zoon van Zichri, voor de stam van Ruben; Sefatja, de zoon van Maächa, voor de stam van Simeon; Hasabja, de zoon van Kemuël, voor de stam van Levi; Zadok, voor de nakomelingen van Aäron; Elihu, een broer van koning David, voor de stam van Juda; Omri, de zoon van Michaël, voor de stam van Issachar; Jismaja, de zoon van Obadja, voor de stam van Zebulon; Jerimoth, de zoon van Azriël, voor de stam van Naftali; Hosea, de zoon van Azazja, voor de stam van Efraïm; Joël, de zoon van Pedaja, voor de ene helft van de stam van Manasse; Jiddo, de zoon van Zecharja, voor de andere helft van de stam van Manasse die in Gilead woonde; Jaäsiël, de zoon van Abner, voor de stam van Benjamin; Azareël, de zoon van Jeroham voor de stam van Dan.
23 Toen David zijn volkstelling hield, rekende hij de mannen van twintig jaar en jonger niet mee, want de Here had beloofd dat zijn volk zo talrijk zou worden als de sterren aan de hemel. 24 Joab begon met de volkstelling, maar voerde hem niet helemaal uit omdat de Here in toorn tegen Israël uitbarstte. De uiteindelijke tellingen werden nooit opgenomen in de geschiedschrijving van koning David.
25 Azmaveth, de zoon van Adiël, had de financiële verantwoordelijkheid voor de kostbaarheden in de schatkamers van het paleis en Jonathan, de zoon van Uzzia, ging over de voorraden op het platteland en die in de steden, dorpen en forten van Israël. 26 Ezri, de zoon van Kelub, had de leiding over het werk op de koninklijke landerijen. 27 De Ramathiet Simi was beheerder van de koninklijke wijngaarden, de Sifmiet Zabdi was verantwoordelijk voor de wijnproductie en de opslag van de wijn. 28 Baäl-Hanan uit Gedera was verantwoordelijk voor de olijfbomen en de wilde vijgebomen die groeiden in het laagland. Joas ging over de olijfolievoorraden. 29 Sitrai uit Saron had de verantwoording over het vee op de vlakte van Saron en Safat, de zoon van Adlai, hield toezicht op het vee in de dalen. 30 Obil, afkomstig uit het gebied van Ismaël, had de zorg voor de kamelen en Jehdeja uit Meronoth voor de ezels. 31 De schapen vielen onder de verantwoordelijkheid van de Hagriet Jaziz. Deze mannen waren de beheerders van koning Davids bezittingen. 32 Jonathan, Davids oom, was adviseur van de koning. Hij was een wijze man en fungeerde als secretaris. Jehiël, de zoon van Hachmoni, begeleidde Davids zonen. 33 Achitofel was ook een adviseur van de koning en de Arkiet Husai was Davids persoonlijke raadsman. 34 Achitofel werd terzijde gestaan door Jojada, de zoon van Benaja, en Abjathar. Joab was opperbevelhebber van het Israëlitische leger.
