ομως τα αψυχα φωνην διδοντα ειτε αυλος ειτε κιθαρα εαν διαστολην τοις φθογγοις μη δω πως γνωσθησεται το αυλουμενον η το κιθαριζομενον

και γαρ εαν αδηλον σαλπιγξ φωνην δω τις παρασκευασεται εις πολεμον

ουτως και υμεις δια της γλωσσης εαν μη ευσημον λογον δωτε πως γνωσθησεται το λαλουμενον εσεσθε γαρ εις αερα λαλουντες

10 τοσαυτα ει τυχοι γενη φωνων εισιν εν κοσμω και ουδεν αφωνον

11 εαν ουν μη ειδω την δυναμιν της φωνης εσομαι τω λαλουντι βαρβαρος και ο λαλων εν εμοι βαρβαρος

12 ουτως και υμεις επει ζηλωται εστε πνευματων προς την οικοδομην της εκκλησιας ζητειτε ινα περισσευητε

13 διο ο λαλων γλωσση προσευχεσθω ινα διερμηνευη

14 εαν [γαρ] προσευχωμαι γλωσση το πνευμα μου προσευχεται ο δε νους μου ακαρπος εστιν

15 τι ουν εστιν προσευξομαι τω πνευματι προσευξομαι δε και τω νοι ψαλω τω πνευματι ψαλω [δε] και τω νοι

16 επει εαν ευλογης [εν] πνευματι ο αναπληρων τον τοπον του ιδιωτου πως ερει το αμην επι τη ση ευχαριστια επειδη τι λεγεις ουκ οιδεν

17 συ μεν γαρ καλως ευχαριστεις αλλ ο ετερος ουκ οικοδομειται

18 ευχαριστω τω θεω παντων υμων μαλλον γλωσσαις λαλω

19 αλλα εν εκκλησια θελω πεντε λογους τω νοι μου λαλησαι ινα και αλλους κατηχησω η μυριους λογους εν γλωσση

20 αδελφοι μη παιδια γινεσθε ταις φρεσιν αλλα τη κακια νηπιαζετε ταις δε φρεσιν τελειοι γινεσθε

21 εν τω νομω γεγραπται οτι εν ετερογλωσσοις και εν χειλεσιν ετερων λαλησω τω λαω τουτω και ουδ ουτως εισακουσονται μου λεγει κυριος

22 ωστε αι γλωσσαι εις σημειον εισιν ου τοις πιστευουσιν αλλα τοις απιστοις η δε προφητεια ου τοις απιστοις αλλα τοις πιστευουσιν

23 εαν ουν συνελθη η εκκλησια ολη επι το αυτο και παντες λαλωσιν γλωσσαις εισελθωσιν δε ιδιωται η απιστοι ουκ ερουσιν οτι μαινεσθε

24 εαν δε παντες προφητευωσιν εισελθη δε τις απιστος η ιδιωτης ελεγχεται υπο παντων ανακρινεται υπο παντων

25 τα κρυπτα της καρδιας αυτου φανερα γινεται και ουτως πεσων επι προσωπον προσκυνησει τω θεω απαγγελλων οτι οντως ο θεος εν υμιν εστιν

26 τι ουν εστιν αδελφοι οταν συνερχησθε εκαστος ψαλμον εχει διδαχην εχει αποκαλυψιν εχει γλωσσαν εχει ερμηνειαν εχει παντα προς οικοδομην γινεσθω

27 ειτε γλωσση τις λαλει κατα δυο η το πλειστον τρεις και ανα μερος και εις διερμηνευετω

28 εαν δε μη η διερμηνευτης σιγατω εν εκκλησια εαυτω δε λαλειτω και τω θεω

29 προφηται δε δυο η τρεις λαλειτωσαν και οι αλλοι διακρινετωσαν

30 εαν δε αλλω αποκαλυφθη καθημενω ο πρωτος σιγατω

31 δυνασθε γαρ καθ ενα παντες προφητευειν ινα παντες μανθανωσιν και παντες παρακαλωνται

32 και πνευματα προφητων προφηταις υποτασσεται

33 ου γαρ εστιν ακαταστασιας ο θεος αλλα ειρηνης ως εν πασαις ταις εκκλησιαις των αγιων

34 αι γυναικες εν ταις εκκλησιαις σιγατωσαν ου γαρ επιτρεπεται αυταις λαλειν αλλα υποτασσεσθωσαν καθως και ο νομος λεγει

35 ει δε τι μανθανειν θελουσιν εν οικω τους ιδιους ανδρας επερωτατωσαν αισχρον γαρ εστιν γυναικι λαλειν εν εκκλησια

36 η αφ υμων ο λογος του θεου εξηλθεν η εις υμας μονους κατηντησεν

37 ει τις δοκει προφητης ειναι η πνευματικος επιγινωσκετω α γραφω υμιν οτι κυριου εστιν εντολη

38 ει δε τις αγνοει αγνοειται

39 ωστε αδελφοι μου ζηλουτε το προφητευειν και το λαλειν μη κωλυετε γλωσσαις

40 παντα δε ευσχημονως και κατα ταξιν γινεσθω

14 Desiderate l'amore e cercate ardentemente i doni spirituali, ma soprattutto che possiate profetizzare,

perché chi parla in altra lingua non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio; poiché nessuno lo comprende, ma egli in spirito proferisce misteri.

Chi profetizza, invece, parla agli uomini per edificazione, esortazione e consolazione.

Chi parla in altra lingua edifica se stesso, ma chi profetizza edifica la chiesa.

Io vorrei che tutti parlaste in lingue, ma molto piú che profetizzaste, perché chi profetizza è superiore a chi parla in lingue a meno che egli interpreti, affinché la chiesa ne riceva edificazione.

Ma ora, fratelli, se venissi a voi parlando in lingue, che vi gioverei se non vi parlassi per mezzo di rivelazione, o di conoscenza, o di profezia, o di insegnamento?

Le cose inanimate stesse che emettono un suono, come il flauto e la cetra, se non danno suoni distinti, come si riconoscerà ciò che si suona con il flauto o con la cetra?

Se infatti la tromba dà un suono sconosciuto, chi si preparerà alla battaglia?

Cosí anche voi, se con la lingua non proferite un parlare intelligibile, come si comprenderà ciò che è detto? Sarebbe infatti come se voi parlaste all'aria.

10 Vi sono, ad esempio, tante varietà di suoni di lingua nel mondo, e nessuno di essi è senza significato.

11 Se dunque io non comprendo il significato del suono, sarò come uno straniero per chi parla, e chi parla sarà uno straniero per me.

12 Cosí anche voi, poiché siete desiderosi di avere doni spirituali, cercate di abbondarne per l'edificazione della chiesa.

13 Perciò chi parla in altra lingua preghi di poter interpretare,

14 perché, se io prego in altra lingua, il mio spirito ben prega, ma la mia mente rimane infruttuosa.

15 Che si deve dunque fare? Pregherò con lo spirito, ma lo farò anche con la mente; canterò con lo spirito, ma canterò anche con la mente.

16 Tuttavia, se tu lodi Dio con lo spirito, colui che occupa il posto del profano, come dirà amen, al tuo ringraziamento, poiché egli non comprende ciò che tu dici?

17 Infatti tu puoi anche rendere un bel ringraziamento, ma l'altro non è edificato.

18 Io ringrazio il mio Dio, perché parlo in lingue piú di voi tutti.

19 Ma nell'assemblea preferisco dire cinque parole con la mia intelligenza per istruire anche gli altri, piuttosto che diecimila parole in altra lingua.

20 Fratelli, non siate bambini di senno, ma siate bambini in malizia e uomini compiuti in senno.

21 Sta scritto nella legge: «Io parlerò a questo popolo in lingue straniere e con labbra straniere, ma neppure cosí mi ascolteranno», dice il Signore.

22 Pertanto le lingue sono un segno non per i credenti, ma per i non credenti mentre la profezia non è per i non credenti, ma per i credenti.

23 Se dunque, quando tutta la chiesa è riunita insieme, tutti parlano in lingue ed entrano dei profani o dei non credenti, non diranno che voi siete fuori di senno?

24 Ma se tutti profetizzano ed entra un non credente, egli è convinto da tutti, è giudicato da tutti.

25 In questo modo i segreti del suo cuore vengono palesati e cosí, gettandosi con la faccia a terra, adorerà Dio, dichiarando che Dio è veramente fra voi.

26 Che conviene dunque fare, fratelli? Quando vi riunite, avendo ciascuno di voi, chi un salmo, chi un insegnamento, chi parole in altra lingua, chi una rivelazione, chi un'interpretazione, si faccia ogni cosa per l'edificazione.

27 Se uno parla in altra lingua, si faccia questo da due o tre al piú, e l'un dopo l'altro, e uno interpreti.

28 Ma se non vi è chi interpreti, si taccia nella chiesa chi parla in altra lingua, ma parli a se stesso e a Dio.

29 Parlino due o tre profeti, e gli altri giudichino.

30 Ma se è rivelata qualcosa ad uno che è seduto, si taccia il precedente.

31 Tutti infatti, ad uno ad uno, potete profetizzare affinché tutti imparino e tutti siano incoraggiati.

32 Gli spiriti dei profeti sono sottoposti ai profeti

33 perché Dio non è un Dio di confusione, ma di pace; e cosí si fà in tutte le chiese dei santi.

34 Tacciano le vostre donne nelle chiese, perché non è loro permesso di parlare, ma devono essere sottomesse, come dice anche la legge.

35 E se vogliono imparare qualche cosa interroghino i propri mariti a casa, perché è vergognoso per le donne parlare in chiesa.

36 E la parola di Dio proceduta da voi o è essa pervenuta a voi soli?

37 Se uno si stima essere profeta o spirituale, riconosca che le cose che vi scrivo sono comandamenti del Signore.

38 E se uno lo vuole ignorare, lo ignori.

39 Perciò, fratelli miei cercate ardentemente il profetizzare e non impedite di parlare in lingue.

40 Ma ogni cosa sia fatta con decoro e con ordine.

Intelligibility in Worship

14 Follow the way of love(A) and eagerly desire(B) gifts of the Spirit,(C) especially prophecy.(D) For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a](E) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;(F) they utter mysteries(G) by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(H) encouraging(I) and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue(J) edifies(K) themselves, but the one who prophesies(L) edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[b] but I would rather have you prophesy.(M) The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[c] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.(N)

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation(O) or knowledge(P) or prophecy or word of instruction?(Q) Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?(R) So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.(S) 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit,(T) try to excel in those that build up(U) the church.

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.(V) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays,(W) but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit,(X) but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing(Y) with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[d] say “Amen”(Z) to your thanksgiving,(AA) since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.(AB)

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.(AC)

20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children.(AD) In regard to evil be infants,(AE) but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law(AF) it is written:

“With other tongues
    and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
    but even then they will not listen to me,(AG)
says the Lord.”[e]

22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy,(AH) however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?(AI) 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets(AJ) of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”(AK)

Good Order in Worship

26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters?(AL) When you come together, each of you(AM) has a hymn,(AN) or a word of instruction,(AO) a revelation, a tongue(AP) or an interpretation.(AQ) Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.(AR) 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

29 Two or three prophets(AS) should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.(AT) 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.(AU) 33 For God is not a God of disorder(AV) but of peace(AW)—as in all the congregations(AX) of the Lord’s people.(AY)

34 Women[f] should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,(AZ) but must be in submission,(BA) as the law(BB) says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.[g]

36 Or did the word of God(BC) originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet(BD) or otherwise gifted by the Spirit,(BE) let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.(BF) 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.[h]

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager(BG) to prophesy,(BH) and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly(BI) way.
