Gesù sale a Gerusalemme
21 Quando Gesù e i suoi discepoli furono vicini a Gerusalemme, in prossimità di Bètfage, sul Monte degli Ulivi, Gesù mandò avanti due dei suoi discepoli al villaggio più vicino.
2 «Non appena entrerete», disse loro, «troverete unʼasina legata, con il suo puledro vicino. Slegateli e portatemeli qui. 3 Se qualcuno vi chiede cosa state facendo, dite soltanto: “Il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma ve li renderà subito”, e non ci saranno contrattempi». 4 Con questo fatto si avverava lʼantica profezia: 5 «Dite a Gerusalemme che il suo re viene verso di lei, cavalcando umilmente un puledro dʼasina!»
6 I due discepoli fecero come Gesù aveva loro ordinato.
7 Gli portarono le due bestie, poi misero i loro mantelli sulla groppa del puledro, perché Gesù potesse cavalcarlo. 8 E molti fra la folla stendevano i propri mantelli davanti al suo cammino, mentre altri tagliavano rami dʼalbero da stendere per terra davanti a lui.
9 E la folla, che lo precedeva e lo seguiva, gridava: «Osanna al figlio di Davide! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore! Osanna nel più alto dei cieli.»
10 Quando Gesù arrivò, tutta la città di Gerusalemme era in agitazione. «Chi è mai questʼuomo?!» chiedevano tutti.
11 E la folla rispondeva: «È Gesù, il profeta che viene da Nazaret di Galilea!»
12 Poi Gesù entrò nel tempio, ne cacciò fuori tutti i mercanti, rovesciò i tavolini dei cambiavalute e le bancarelle dei venditori di colombi.
13 «Le Scritture dicono che il mio tempio è un posto di preghiera!» gridò. «Ma voi lʼavete trasformato in una spelonca di ladri!»
14 Allora i ciechi e gli zoppi vennero da lui ed egli li guarì, lì nel tempio. 15 Quando i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei videro questi miracoli meravigliosi e sentirono che perfino i bambini gridavano nel tempio: «Dio benedica il figlio di Davide!», rimasero turbati e indignati. Si rivolsero a Gesù e gli chiesero: «Non senti che stanno gridando questi bambini?»
16 «Sì», rispose Gesù, «non avete mai letto le Scritture? Dicono: “Tu hai tratto forza dalla bocca dei bambini e dei lattanti che ti lodano.”»
17 Poi ritornò a Betania, dove passò la notte.
18 La mattina dopo, mentre tornava a Gerusalemme, Gesù ebbe fame. 19 Avendo notato un albero di fichi a lato della strada, si avvicinò per vedere se cʼerano dei frutti, ma trovò soltanto foglie. Allora disse allʼalbero: «Che tu non produca mai più frutti!» Immediatamente il fico si seccò.
20 I discepoli restarono allibiti e chiesero: «Come ha fatto questo fico a seccarsi così in fretta?»
21 Allora Gesù disse loro: «Per la verità, se avete fede e non dubitate, potrete fare cose come questa e anche più grandi. Potreste perfino dire a questo Monte degli Ulivi: “Gettati nel mare”, e lo farebbe. 22 Potete ottenere tutto, veramente tutto ciò che chiedete in preghiera, se avete fede».
I capi giudei tendono la loro trappola
23 Gesù ritornò nel tempio. Mentre stava insegnando, i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei gli si avvicinarono per domandargli con quale autorità il giorno prima avesse cacciato i mercanti.
24 «Ve lo dico, se prima rispondete ad una domanda», rispose Gesù. 25 «Secondo voi, Giovanni Battista fu mandato da Dio o no?» Essi cominciarono a discutere fra loro. «Se diciamo: “Da Dio”,» dicevano, «allora ci chiederà perché non abbiamo creduto a ciò che diceva Giovanni. 26 Se, invece, diciamo che non fu Dio a mandarlo rischiamo di essere linciati, perché tutta questa gente crede che Giovanni sia un profeta». 27 Finalmente risposero: «Non lo sappiamo!»
Allora Gesù disse: «In tal caso neppure io risponderò alla vostra domanda.
28 Voglio però il vostro parere su questo fatto. Un uomo con due figli disse al maggiore: “Figliuolo, vai a lavorare nella vigna, oggi”. 29 “Non ne ho voglia”, gli rispose il figlio, ma più tardi cambiò idea e vi andò. 30 Poi il padre disse al minore: “Vai a lavorare!” Ed egli rispose: “Sì ci vado”. Ma non lo fece. 31 Secondo voi, chi dei due obbedì a suo padre?»
«Il primo, naturalmente», risposero.
Allora Gesù disse: «Sicuramente ladri e prostitute entreranno nel Regno prima di voi. 32 Perché, quando Giovanni Battista vʼinvitò a pentirvi e a convertirvi a Dio, voi non gli avete dato ascolto, mentre gli hanno creduto dei ladri e delle prostitute. E perfino quando avete visto ciò che accadeva davanti ai vostri occhi, non avete voluto cambiare idea e avete continuato a non credergli.
33 Ascoltate ora questa storia: un proprietario terriero piantò una vigna con una siepe intorno, scavò una buca per pigiare lʼuva e fece costruire una piattaforma per il guardiano, poi affittò la vigna ad alcuni contadini con un contratto di mezzadria e se ne andò a vivere in un altro paese.
34 Al tempo della vendemmia, mandò dei suoi dipendenti dai contadini per ritirare la sua parte. 35 Ma i contadini aggredirono i suoi uomini, ne malmenarono uno, ne uccisero un altro e ne lapidarono un terzo.
36 Allora il proprietario mandò molti altri suoi uomini a richiedere la parte che gli spettava, ma il risultato fu lo stesso. 37 Finalmente il padrone mandò suo figlio, pensando che avrebbero senzʼaltro avuto rispetto di lui.
38 Invece, quando quei contadini videro il figlio avvicinarsi, dissero fra loro: “Ecco lʼerede di questa proprietà; venite, uccidiamolo, così ce la terremo per noi!” 39 Allora lo presero, lo gettarono fuori dalla vigna e lo uccisero.
40 E ora ditemi: quando il padrone tornerà, che cosa farà a quei contadini?»
41 «Li farà morire fra atroci sofferenze e affitterà la vigna ad altri, pronti a pagare il dovuto», risposero i capi giudei.
42 Allora Gesù chiese loro: «Non avete mai letto nelle Scritture: “La pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato è diventata la pietra angolare, la pietra più importante dellʼedificio! Questa è lʼopera del Signore, una meraviglia per i nostri occhi!”
43 Intendo dire che il Regno di Dio vi sarà tolto e sarà dato ad un popolo che farà crescere i frutti.
44 Tutti quelli che inciamperanno in questa pietra di verità, saranno sfracellati, e quelli su cui cadrà, saranno ridotti in polvere!»
45 Quando i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei si accorsero che Gesù stava parlando di loro (erano loro i malvagi contadini della sua storia), 46 avrebbero voluto liberarsi di lui, ma non osavano, perché la folla considerava Gesù un profeta.

Ingresso messianico a Gerusalemme
21 Quando furono vicini a Gerusalemme e giunsero presso Bètfage, verso il monte degli Ulivi, Gesù mandò due dei suoi discepoli 2 dicendo loro: «Andate nel villaggio che vi sta di fronte: subito troverete un'asina legata e con essa un puledro. Scioglieteli e conduceteli a me. 3 Se qualcuno poi vi dirà qualche cosa, risponderete: Il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma li rimanderà subito». 4 Ora questo avvenne perché si adempisse ciò che era stato annunziato dal profeta:
5 Dite alla figlia di Sion:
Ecco, il tuo re viene a te
mite, seduto su un'asina,
con un puledro figlio di bestia da soma.
6 I discepoli andarono e fecero quello che aveva ordinato loro Gesù: 7 condussero l'asina e il puledro, misero su di essi i mantelli ed egli vi si pose a sedere. 8 La folla numerosissima stese i suoi mantelli sulla strada mentre altri tagliavano rami dagli alberi e li stendevano sulla via. 9 La folla che andava innanzi e quella che veniva dietro, gridava:
Osanna al figlio di Davide!
Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!
Osanna nel più alto dei cieli!
10 Entrato Gesù in Gerusalemme, tutta la città fu in agitazione e la gente si chiedeva: «Chi è costui?». 11 E la folla rispondeva: «Questi è il profeta Gesù, da Nazaret di Galilea».
I venditori cacciati dal tempio
12 Gesù entrò poi nel tempio e scacciò tutti quelli che vi trovò a comprare e a vendere; rovesciò i tavoli dei cambiavalute e le sedie dei venditori di colombe 13 e disse loro: «La Scrittura dice:
La mia casa sarà chiamata casa di preghiera
ma voi ne fate una spelonca di ladri».
14 Gli si avvicinarono ciechi e storpi nel tempio ed egli li guarì. 15 Ma i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi, vedendo le meraviglie che faceva e i fanciulli che acclamavano nel tempio: «Osanna al figlio di Davide», si sdegnarono 16 e gli dissero: «Non senti quello che dicono?». Gesù rispose loro: «Sì, non avete mai letto:
Dalla bocca dei bambini e dei lattanti
ti sei procurata una lode?».
17 E, lasciatili, uscì fuori dalla città, verso Betània, e là trascorse la notte.
Il fico sterile e seccato. Fede e preghiera
18 La mattina dopo, mentre rientrava in città, ebbe fame. 19 Vedendo un fico sulla strada, gli si avvicinò, ma non vi trovò altro che foglie, e gli disse: «Non nasca mai più frutto da te». E subito quel fico si seccò. 20 Vedendo ciò i discepoli rimasero stupiti e dissero: «Come mai il fico si è seccato immediatamente?». 21 Rispose Gesù: «In verità vi dico: Se avrete fede e non dubiterete, non solo potrete fare ciò che è accaduto a questo fico, ma anche se direte a questo monte: Levati di lì e gettati nel mare, ciò avverrà. 22 E tutto quello che chiederete con fede nella preghiera, lo otterrete».
Obiezione dei Giudei sull'autorità di Gesù
23 Entrato nel tempio, mentre insegnava gli si avvicinarono i sommi sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo e gli dissero: «Con quale autorità fai questo? Chi ti ha dato questa autorità?». 24 Gesù rispose: «Vi farò anch'io una domanda e se voi mi rispondete, vi dirò anche con quale autorità faccio questo. 25 Il battesimo di Giovanni da dove veniva? Dal cielo o dagli uomini?». Ed essi riflettevano tra sé dicendo: «Se diciamo: "dal Cielò', ci risponderà: "perché dunque non gli avete creduto?''; 26 se diciamo "dagli uominì', abbiamo timore della folla, perché tutti considerano Giovanni un profeta». 27 Rispondendo perciò a Gesù, dissero: «Non lo sappiamo». Allora anch'egli disse loro: «Neanch'io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».
Parabola dei due figli
28 «Che ve ne pare? Un uomo aveva due figli; rivoltosi al primo disse: Figlio, và oggi a lavorare nella vigna. 29 Ed egli rispose: Sì, signore; ma non andò. 30 Rivoltosi al secondo, gli disse lo stesso. Ed egli rispose: Non ne ho voglia; ma poi, pentitosi, ci andò. 31 Chi dei due ha compiuto la volontà del padre?». Dicono: «L'ultimo». E Gesù disse loro: «In verità vi dico: I pubblicani e le prostitute vi passano avanti nel regno di Dio. 32 E' venuto a voi Giovanni nella via della giustizia e non gli avete creduto; i pubblicani e le prostitute invece gli hanno creduto. Voi, al contrario, pur avendo visto queste cose, non vi siete nemmeno pentiti per credergli.
Parabola dei vignaioli omicidi
33 Ascoltate un'altra parabola: C'era un padrone che piantò una vigna e la circondò con una siepe, vi scavò un frantoio, vi costruì una torre, poi l'affidò a dei vignaioli e se ne andò. 34 Quando fu il tempo dei frutti, mandò i suoi servi da quei vignaioli a ritirare il raccolto. 35 Ma quei vignaioli presero i servi e uno lo bastonarono, l'altro lo uccisero, l'altro lo lapidarono. 36 Di nuovo mandò altri servi più numerosi dei primi, ma quelli si comportarono nello stesso modo. 37 Da ultimo mandò loro il proprio figlio dicendo: Avranno rispetto di mio figlio! 38 Ma quei vignaioli, visto il figlio, dissero tra sé: Costui è l'erede; venite, uccidiamolo, e avremo noi l'eredità. 39 E, presolo, lo cacciarono fuori della vigna e l'uccisero. 40 Quando dunque verrà il padrone della vigna che farà a quei vignaioli?». 41 Gli rispondono: «Farà morire miseramente quei malvagi e darà la vigna ad altri vignaioli che gli consegneranno i frutti a suo tempo». 42 E Gesù disse loro: «Non avete mai letto nelle Scritture:
La pietra che i costruttori hanno scartata
è diventata testata d'angolo;
dal Signore è stato fatto questo
ed è mirabile agli occhi nostri?
43 Perciò io vi dico: vi sarà tolto il regno di Dio e sarà dato a un popolo che lo farà fruttificare. 44 Chi cadrà sopra questa pietra sarà sfracellato; e qualora essa cada su qualcuno, lo stritolerà».
45 Udite queste parabole, i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei capirono che parlava di loro e cercavano di catturarlo; ma avevano paura della folla che lo considerava un profeta.

21 Quando furono vicini a Gerusalemme, giunti a Betfage, presso il monte degli Ulivi, Gesú mandò due discepoli,
2 dicendo loro: «Andate nel villaggio che si trova davanti a voi; e subito troverete un'asina legata e un puledro con essa; scioglieteli e conduceteli da me.
3 E se qualcuno vi dice qualcosa, ditegli che il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma li rimanderà presto».
4 Or questo accadde, affinché si adempisse ciò che fu detto dal profeta, che dice:
5 «Dite alla figlia di Sion: Ecco il tuo re viene a te mansueto, cavalcando un asino, anzi un puledro, figlio di una bestia da soma».
6 I discepoli andarono e fecero come Gesú aveva loro comandato.
7 Condussero l'asina e il puledro, posero su questo i loro mantelli, ed egli vi montò sopra.
8 E una grandissima folla stendeva i suoi mantelli sulla strada, mentre altri tagliavano rami dagli alberi e li spargevano sulla via.
9 Le folle che precedevano come quelle che seguivano gridavano, dicendo: «Osanna al Figlio di Davide! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore! Osanna nei luoghi altissimi!».
10 E, quando egli entrò in Gerusalemme, tutta la città fu messa in agitazione, e diceva: «Chi è costui?».
11 E le folle dicevano: «Costui è Gesú il profeta che viene da Nazaret di Galilea».
12 Poi Gesú entrò nel tempio di Dio, ne scacciò tutti coloro che nel tempio vendevano e compravano, e rovesciò le tavole dei cambiavalute e le sedie dei venditori di colombi.
13 E disse loro: «Sta scritto: "La mia casa sarà chiamata casa di orazione ma voi ne avete fatto un covo di ladroni».
14 Allora vennero da lui nel tempio ciechi e zoppi, ed egli li guarí.
15 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi, viste le meraviglie che egli aveva fatto e i fanciulli che gridavano nel tempio dicendo: «Osanna al Figlio di Davide!», ne furono indignati,
16 e gli dissero: «Senti tu ciò che questi dicono?». Gesú disse loro «Sí! Non avete mai letto: "Dalla bocca dei bambini e dei lattanti, tu ti sei procurato lode».
17 E lasciatili, uscí dalla città verso Betania, e là passò la notte.
18 La mattina, ritornando in città, ebbe fame.
19 E vedendo un fico lungo la strada, gli si avvicinò, ma non vi trovò nulla se non delle foglie; e gli disse: «Non nasca mai piú frutto da te in eterno!». E subito il fico si seccò.
20 E, vedendo ciò, i discepoli si meravigliarono e dissero: «Come mai il fico si è seccato all'istante?».
21 E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «In verità vi dico che se avete fede e non dubitate, non solo farete ciò che io ho fatto al fico, ma se anche diceste a questo monte: "Levati di lí e gettati nel mare" ciò avverrà.
22 E tutto ciò che chiederete in preghiera, avendo fede, lo otterrete».
23 Quando entrò nel tempio, i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo si accostarono a lui, mentre insegnava, e dissero: «Con quale autorità fai tu queste cose? E chi ti ha dato questa autorità?».
24 E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Anch'io vi farò una domanda, e se voi mi risponderete, io pure vi dirò con quale autorità faccio queste cose.
25 Il battesimo di Giovanni da dove veniva? Dal cielo o dagli uomini?». Ed essi ragionavano tra loro dicendo: «Se diciamo dal cielo, ci dirà: "Perché dunque non gli credeste?"
26 Se invece diciamo dagli uomini, temiamo la folla, perché tutti ritengono Giovanni un profeta».
27 E risposero a Gesú dicendo: «Non lo sappiamo». Allora egli disse loro: «Neanch'io vi dirò con quale autorità faccio queste cose».
28 «Che ve ne pare? Un uomo aveva due figli e rivolgendosi al primo disse "Figlio, va' oggi a lavorare nella mia vigna".
29 ma egli rispose e disse: "Non voglio"; piú tardi però, pentitosi, vi andò.
30 Poi, rivoltosi al secondo gli disse la stessa cosa. Ed egli rispose e disse: "Sí, lo farò signore ma non vi andò.
31 Chi dei due ha fatto la volontà del padre?». Essi gli dissero: «Il primo». Gesú disse loro: «In verità vi dico che i pubblicani e le meretrici vi precedono nel regno dei cieli.
32 Poiché Giovanni è venuto a voi per la via della giustizia, e voi non gli avete creduto, mentre i pubblicani e le meretrici gli hanno creduto; e voi, nemmeno dopo aver visto queste cose, vi siete ravveduti per credergli».
33 «Ascoltate un'altra parabola: Vi era un padrone di casa, il quale piantò una vigna, Ia cinse di una siepe, vi scavò un luogo dove pigiare l'uva, vi costruí una torre e, dopo averla affidata a certi vignaioli, partí.
34 Ora giunto il tempo della raccolta egli mandò i suoi servi dai vignaioli, per riceverne i frutti,
35 ma i vignaioli, presi i suoi servi, uno lo bastonarono, un altro lo uccisero e un altro lo lapidarono.
36 Di nuovo egli mandò altri servi, in maggior numero dei primi; e quei vignaioli li trattarono allo stesso modo.
37 In ultimo egli mandò loro il proprio figlio dicendo: "Avranno almeno rispetto di mio figlio!".
38 Ma i vignaioli, visto il figlio dissero fra loro: "Costui è l'erede; venite uccidiamolo e impadroniamoci della sua eredità"
39 E, presolo lo cacciarono fuori della vigna e lo uccisero.
40 Ora, quando verrà il padrone della vigna, che cosa farà a quei vignaioli?».
41 Essi gli dissero: «Egli farà perire miseramente quegli scellerati, e affiderà la vigna ad altri vignaioli, i quali gli renderanno i frutti a suo tempo».
42 Gesú disse loro: «Non avete mai letto nelle Scritture: "La pietra che gli edificatori hanno rigettata è divenuta la testata d'angolo. Questa è opera del Signore, ed è meravigliosa agli occhi nostri"?.
43 Perciò io vi dico che il regno di Dio vi sarà tolto e sarà dato a una gente che lo farà fruttificare.
44 E chi cadrà su questa pietra sarà sfracellato; e colui sul quale essa cadrà sarà stritolato».
45 I capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei, udite le sue parabole, si avvidero che parlava di loro.
46 E cercavano di prenderlo, ma temettero le folle, perché lo ritenevano un profeta.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,(C) Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
4 This took place to fulfill(D) what was spoken through the prophet:
5 “Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”[a](E)
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks(F) on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet(J) from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Jesus at the Temple(K)
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying(L) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers(M) and the benches of those selling doves.(N) 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e](O) but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[f]”(P)
14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.(Q) 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,”(R) they were indignant.(S)
16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.
“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,
17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany,(U) where he spent the night.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree(V)
18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.(W)
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt,(X) not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for(Y) in prayer.”
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(Z)
23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority(AA) are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”
24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”(AB)
27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’(AC)
29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors(AD) and the prostitutes(AE) are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,(AF) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors(AG) and the prostitutes(AH) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent(AI) and believe him.
The Parable of the Tenants(AJ)
33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted(AK) a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower.(AL) Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.(AM) 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants(AN) to the tenants to collect his fruit.
35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.(AO) 36 Then he sent other servants(AP) to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.(AQ) Come, let’s kill him(AR) and take his inheritance.’(AS) 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”(AT) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,(AU) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?(AV)
43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you(AW) and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”[i](AX)
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.(AY)

21 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased,
16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.
