مَوْتُ لِعَازَر
11 وَمَرِضَ رَجُلٌ اسْمُهُ لِعَازَرُ مِنْ قَرْيَةِ بَيْتِ عَنْيَا، وَهِيَ القَرْيَةُ الَّتِي كَانَتْ تَسْكُنُ فِيهَا مَرْيَمُ وَأُخْتُهَا مَرْثَا. 2 وَمَرْيَمُ هِيَ أُختُ لِعَازَرَ المَرِيضِ، وَهِيَ المَرْأةُ الَّتِي مَسَحَتْ قَدَمَيِّ الرَّبِّ بِالعِطْرِ وَنَشَّفَتْهُمَا بِشَعْرِهَا.[a] 3 فَأرْسَلَتِ الأُختَانِ إلَى يَسُوعَ شَخْصًا يَقُولُ لَهُ: «يَا سَيِّدُ، هَا إنَّ الَّذِي تُحِبُّهُ مَرِيضٌ.»
4 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ يَسُوعُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ: «لَنْ يَنْتَهِيَ هَذَا المَرَضُ بِالمَوْتِ، لَكِنَّهُ لِمَجْدِ اللهِ، وَلِكَي يَتَمَجَّدَ ابْنُ اللهِ بِوَاسِطَتِهِ.»
5 وَكَانَ يَسُوعُ يُحِبُّ مَرْثَا وَأُختَهَا وَلِعَازَرَ. 6 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ أنَّ لِعَازَرَ مَرِيضٌ، مَكَثَ يَوْمَينِ آخَرَينِ حَيْثُ كَانَ. 7 بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ لِتَلَامِيذِهِ: «لِنَرْجِعْ إلَى اليَهُودِيَّةِ.»
8 فَقَالَ لَهُ تَلَامِيذُهُ: «يَا مُعَلِّمُ، لَقَدْ حَاوَلَ اليَهُودُ أنْ يَرْجُمُوكَ فِي ذَلِكَ المَكَانِ مُنْذُ مُدَّةٍ قَصِيرَةٍ، فَكَيْفَ تَرْجِعُ إلَى هُنَاكَ؟»
9 أجَابَ يَسُوعُ: «ألَيْسَتْ سَاعَاتُ النَّهَارِ اثْنَتَي عَشْرَةَ؟ فَإنْ سَارَ أحَدٌ فِي النَّهَارِ، فَإنَّهُ لَا يَتَعَثَّرُ لِأنَّهُ يَرَى نُورَ هَذَا العَالَمِ. 10 أمَّا إنْ سَارَ أحَدٌ لَيْلًا، فَإنَّهُ يَتَعَثَّرُ لِأنَّهُ بِلَا نُورٍ.»
11 ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ: «لَقَدْ نَامَ صَدِيقُنَا لِعَازَرُ، لَكِنِّي سَأذْهَبُ لِكَي أُوقِظَهُ.»
12 فَقَالَ لَهُ تَلَامِيذُهُ: «يَا رَبُّ، إنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أنْ يَنَامَ، فَسَيَتَعَافَى.» 13 وَكَانَ يَسُوعُ يَتَحَدَّثُ عَنْ مَوْتِ لِعَازَرَ، لَكِنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا أنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَحَدَّثُ عَنِ النَّوْمِ الطَّبِيعِيِّ.
14 فَقَالَ لَهُمْ يَسُوعُ بِوُضُوحٍ: «مَاتَ لِعَازَرُ. 15 وَأنَا سَعِيدٌ لِأنِّي لَمْ أكُنْ هُنَاكَ، وَذَلِكَ لِكَي تُؤْمِنُوا أنْتُمْ. فَلْنَذْهَبِ الآنَ إلَيْهِ.»
16 فَقَالَ تُومَا، وَيَعْنِي اسْمُهُ «التَّوْأمَ،» لِبَقِيَّةِ التَّلَامِيذِ: «دَعُونَا نَذْهَبُ نَحْنُ أيْضًا لِكَي نَمُوتَ مَعَ السَّيِّدِ.»
يَسُوعُ فِي قَرْيَةِ بَيْتِ عَنْيَا
17 فَذَهَبَ يَسُوعُ وَوَجَدَ أنَّهُ قَدْ مَضَتْ عَلَى لِعَازَرَ أرْبَعَةُ أيَّامٍ فِي القَبْرِ. 18 وَلَمْ تَكُنْ قَرْيَةُ بَيْتِ عَنْيَا تَبْعُدُ عَنْ مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ إلَّا نَحْوَ مِيلَينِ. 19 فَجَاءَ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ اليَهُودِ إلَى مَرْثَا وَمَرْيَمَ لِيُعَزُّوهُمَا عَنْ أخِيهِمَا.
20 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ مَرْثَا أنَّ يَسُوعَ قَدْ جَاءَ، ذَهَبَتْ لَاسْتِقْبَالِهِ. أمَّا مَرْيَمُ فَبَقِيَتْ فِي البَيْتِ. 21 فَقَالَتْ مَرْثَا لِيَسُوعَ: «لَوْ كُنْتَ هَنُا يَا سَيِّدُ لَمَا مَاتَ أخِي، 22 لَكِنِّي أعْرِفُ الآنَ أيْضًا أنَّ اللهَ يُعطِيكَ كُلَّ مَا تَطْلُبُهُ مِنْهُ.»
23 فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «سَيَقُومُ أخُوكِ مِنَ المَوْتِ.»
24 فَقَالَتْ لَهُ مَرْثَا: «أنَا أعْرِفُ أنَّهُ سَيَقُومُ مِنَ المَوْتِ فِي القِيَامَةِ، فِي اليَوْمِ الأخِيرِ.»
25 فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «أنَا هُوَ القِيَامَةُ وَالحَيَاةُ. مَنْ يُؤمِنُ بِي، وَإنْ مَاتَ، فَسَيَحيَا ثَانِيَةً. 26 وَكُلُّ مَنْ يَحيَا مُؤْمِنًا بِي، فَلَنْ يَمُوتَ أبَدًا. أتُؤْمِنِينَ بِهَذَا؟»
27 قَالَتْ لَهُ: «نَعَمْ يَا رَبُّ، أُومِنُ بِأنَّكَ المَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللهِ الآتِي إلَى هَذَا العَالَمِ.»
بَكَى يَسُوع
28 وَبَعْدَ أنْ قَالَتْ هَذَا، ذَهَبَتْ وَنَادَتْ أُختَهَا مَرْيَمَ وَقَالَتْ لَهَا سِرًّا: «المُعَلِّمُ هُنَا، وَهُوَ يَسْألُ عَنْكِ.» 29 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ مَرْيَمُ هَذَا، قَامَتْ مُسْرِعَةً وَذَهَبَتْ إلَيْهِ. 30 وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَسُوعُ قَدْ دَخَلَ القَرْيَةَ بَعْدُ، بَلْ كَانَ مَا يَزَالُ فِي المَكَانِ الَّذِي لَاقَتْهُ فِيهِ مَرْثَا. 31 وَكَانَ بَعْضُ اليَهُودِ مَعَ مَرْيَمَ فِي البَيْتِ يُعَزُّونَهَا. فَلَمَّا رَأوْا أنَّهَا قَامَتْ وَخَرَجَتْ مِنَ البَيْتِ مُسْرِعَةً، لَحِقُوا بِهَا. فَقَدْ ظَنُّوا أنَّهَا ذَاهِبَةٌ إلَى القَبْرِ لِتَبْكِيَ هُنَاكَ. 32 وَحِينَ وَصَلَتْ مَرْيَمُ إلَى حَيْثُ كَانَ يَسُوعُ وَرَأتْهُ، وَقَعَتْ عِنْدَ قَدَمَيهِ وَقَالَتْ لَهُ: «لَوْ كُنْتَ هُنَا يَا سَيِّدُ لَمَا مَاتَ أخِي.»
33 فَلَمَّا رَآهَا يَسُوعُ تَبْكِي هِيَ وَاليَهُودُ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مَعَهَا، تَأثَّرَ فِي رُوحِهِ وَتَضَايَقَ.
34 ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أيْنَ دَفَنْتُمُوهُ؟»
فَقَالُوا لَهُ: «تَعَالَ وَانْظُرْ يَا سَيِّدُ.»
35 فَبَكَى يَسُوعُ.
36 فَقَالَ بَعْضُ اليَهُودِ: «انْظُرُوا كَمْ كَانَ يُحِبُّهُ!»
37 وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: «أمَا كَانَ بِإمْكَانِ الَّذِي أعْطَى الأعمَى بَصَرًا أنْ يَحْفَظَ لِعَازَرَ مِنَ المَوْتِ؟» فَتَأثَّرَ يَسُوعُ فِي نَفْسِهِ ثَانِيَةً.
يَسُوعُ يُحيِي لِعَازَر
38 ثُمَّ اقْتَرَبَ مِنَ القَبْرِ، وَكَانَ القَبْرُ مَغَارَةً تَسُدُّ بَابَهَا صَخْرَةٌ. 39 فَقَالَ يَسُوعُ: «أزِيحُوا هَذِهِ الصَّخْرَةَ.»
فَقَالَتْ مَرْثَا أُختُ المَيِّتِ: «سَتَكُونُ رَائِحَتُهُ كَرِيهَةً يَا سَيِّدُ، فَقَدْ مَضَتْ عَلَيْهِ أرْبَعَةُ أيَّامٍ.»
40 فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «ألَمْ أقُلْ لَكِ إنْ آمَنْتِ فَسَتَرَينَ مَجْدَ اللهِ؟»
41 ثُمَّ أزَاحُوا الصَّخْرَةَ، فَرَفَعَ يَسُوعُ عَيْنَيْهِ وَقَالَ: «أيُّهَا الآبُ، أشْكُرُكَ لِأنَّكَ سَمِعْتَ لِي. 42 وَأنَا أعْرِفُ أنَّكَ دَائِمًا تَسْمَعُ لِي، لَكِنِّي تَكَلَّمْتُ مِنْ أجْلِ هَؤُلَاءِ النَّاسِ لِكَي يُؤمِنُوا بِأنَّكَ أنْتَ أرْسَلْتَنِي.» 43 وَبَعْدَ أنْ قَالَ هَذَا، نَادَى بِصَوْتٍ مُرْتَفِعٍ: «يَا لِعَازَرُ، اخرُجْ!» 44 فَخَرَجَ المَيِّتُ وَقَدْ رُبِطَتْ يَدَاهُ وَرِجلَاهُ بِقُمَاشِ الأكفَانِ، وَكَانَ وَجْهُهُ مَلْفُوفًا بِمِنْدِيلٍ.
فَقَالَ يَسُوعُ: «حُلُّوهُ وَدَعُوهُ يَذْهَبْ.»
قَادَةُ اليَهُودِ يُخَطِّطُونَ لِقَتلِ يَسُوع

45 فَآمَنَ بِيَسُوعَ كَثِيرُونَ مِنَ اليَهُودِ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مَعَ مَرْيَمَ وَرَأوْا مَا فَعَلَ. 46 لَكِنَّ جَمَاعَةً مِنْهُمْ ذَهَبُوا إلَى الفِرِّيسِيِّينَ وَأخبَرُوهُمْ بِمَا فَعَلَ يَسُوعُ. 47 فَدَعَا كِبَارُ الكَهَنَةِ وَالفِرِّيسِيُّونَ إلَى عَقْدِ المَجلِسِ اليَهُودِيِّ، وَقَالُوا: «مَاذَا سَنَفْعَلُ؟ فَهَذَا الرَّجُلُ يَصْنَعُ مُعْجِزَاتٍ كَثِيرَةً! 48 فَإذَا تَرَكْنَاهُ، سَيُؤمِنُ بِهِ الجَمِيعُ. وَسَيَأْتِي الرُّومَانُ وَيُدَمِّرُونَ هَيكَلَنَا وَشَعْبَنَا.»
49 وَكَانَ رَئِيسُ الكَهَنَةِ فِي تِلْكَ السَّنَةِ هُوَ قِيَافَا، وَهُوَ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ. فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «أنْتُمْ لَا تَعْرِفُونَ شَيْئًا! 50 وَلَا تُدْرِكُونَ أنَّهُ لِمَصلَحَتِنَا أنْ يَمُوتَ رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ عَنِ الشَّعْبِ. فَهَذَا أفْضَلُ مِنْ أنْ تَمُوتَ الأُمَّةُ بِكَامِلِهَا.»
51 وَكَانَتْ هَذِهِ نُبُوَّةً بِأنَّ يَسُوعَ سَيَمُوتُ عَنِ الأُمَّةِ. وَلَمْ يَكُنْ قِيَافَا يَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ، لَكِنَّهُ تنَبَّأ بِذَلِكَ لِأنَّهُ كَانَ رَئِيسَ الكَهَنَةِ فِي تِلْكَ السَّنَةِ. 52 وَلَيْسَ أنَّ يَسُوعَ سَيَمُوتُ عَنِ اليَهُودِ فَحَسْبُ، بَلْ أيْضًا لِيَجْمَعَ كُلَّ أوْلَادِ اللهِ المُتَفَرِّقِينَ فِي شَعْبٍ وَاحِدٍ.
53 وَمُنْذُ ذَلِكَ اليَوْمِ، بَدَأُوا يُخَطِّطُونَ لِقَتلِهِ. 54 فَلَمْ يَعُدْ يَسُوعُ يَتَنَقَّلُ بَيْنَ اليَهُودِ عَلَانِيَةً، لَكِنَّهُ ذَهَبَ إلَى بَلْدَةٍ قَرِيبَةٍ مِنَ البَرِّيَّةِ تُدْعَى أفْرَايِمُ، وَأقَامَ هُنَاكَ مَعَ تَلَامِيذِهِ.
55 وَكَانَ عِيدُ الفِصْحِ اليَهُودِيُّ قَدِ اقْتَرَبَ، فَذَهَبَ كَثِيرُونَ مِنَ الرِّيفِ إلَى مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ قَبْلَ الفِصْحِ لِيُطَهِّرُوا أنْفُسَهُمْ. 56 وَكَانُوا يَبْحَثُونَ عَنْ يَسُوعَ. وَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ وَاقِفُونَ فِي سَاحَةِ الهَيْكَلِ، أخَذُوا يَتَسَاءَلُونَ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ: «مَاذَا تَظُنُّونَ؟ ألَنْ يَأْتِيَ إلَى العِيدِ؟» 57 وَكَانَ كِبَارُ الكَهَنَةِ وَالفِرِّيسِيُّونَ قَدْ أصْدَرُوا أوَامِرَهُمْ بِأنَّ عَلَى كُلِّ مَنْ يَعْرِفُ مَكَانَ يَسُوعَ أنْ يُبَلِّغَ عَنْهُ، لِكَي يَقْبِضُوا عَلَيْهِ.

11 Era allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betania, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta, sua sorella.
2 Or Maria era quella che unse di olio profumato il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; e suo fratello Lazzaro era malato.
3 Le sorelle dunque mandarono a dire a Gesú: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato».
4 E Gesú, udito ciò, disse: «Questa malattia non è a morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il Figlio di Dio sia glorificato».
5 Or Gesú amava Marta, sua sorella e Lazzaro.
6 Come dunque ebbe inteso che Lazzaro era malato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nel luogo dove egli era.
7 Poi disse ai suoi discepoli: «Torniamo di nuovo in Giudea».
8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Maestro, i Giudei poco fa cercavano di lapidarti e tu vai di nuovo là?».
9 Gesú rispose: «Non vi sono forse dodici ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo
10 ma se uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui».
11 Dopo aver detto queste cose, soggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro si è addormentato, ma io vado a svegliarlo».
12 Allora i suoi discepoli dissero: «Signore, se dorme si riprenderà».
13 Or Gesú aveva parlato della sua morte, essi invece pensavano che avesse parlato del riposo del sonno.
14 Allora Gesú disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto.
15 Ed io mi rallegro per voi di non essere stato là, affinché crediate; ma andiamo da lui».
16 Allora Tommaso, detto Didimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui».
17 Arrivato dunque Gesú, trovò che Lazzaro era già da quattro giorni nel sepolcro.
18 Or Betania distava da Gerusalemme circa quindici stadi.
19 E molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.
20 Marta dunque, come udí che Gesú veniva, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa.
21 Marta disse a Gesú: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto,
22 ma anche adesso so che tutto quello che chiederai a Dio, Dio te lo darà».
23 Gesú le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà».
24 Marta gli disse: «Lo so che risusciterà nella risurrezione all'ultimo giorno».
25 Gesú le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chiunque crede in me, anche se dovesse morire, vivrà.
26 E chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà mai in eterno. Credi tu questo?».
27 Ella gli disse: «Sí, Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che doveva venire nel mondo».
28 E, detto questo, andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama».
29 Appena udito ciò, ella si alzò in fretta e venne da lui.
30 Or Gesú non era ancora giunto nel villaggio, ma si trovava nel luogo dove Marta lo aveva incontrato.
31 Perciò i Giudei che erano in casa con lei per consolarla, vedendo Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, dicendo: «Ella se ne va al sepolcro per piangere la».
32 Appena Maria giunse al luogo in cui si trovava Gesú, e lo vide, si gettò ai suoi piedi, dicendogli: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto».
33 Gesú allora, come vide che lei e i Giudei che erano venuti con lei piangevano, fremé nello spirito e si turbò,
34 e disse: «Dove l'avete posto?». Essi gli dissero: «Signore, vieni e vedi».
35 Gesú pianse.
36 Dissero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come l'amava!».
37 Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Non poteva costui che aprí gli occhi al cieco, far sí che questi non morisse?».
38 Perciò Gesú, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro; or questo era una grotta davanti alla quale era stata posta una pietra.
39 Gesú disse: «Togliete via la pietra!». Marta, la sorella del morto, gli disse: «Signore, egli puzza già, poiché è morto da quattro giorni».
40 Gesú le disse: «Non ti ho detto che se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?».
41 Essi dunque tolsero la pietra dal luogo dove giaceva il morto. Gesú allora alzati in alto gli occhi, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai esaudito.
42 lo sapevo bene che tu mi esaudisci sempre, ma ho detto ciò per la folla che sta attorno, affinché credano che tu mi hai mandato».
43 E, detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!».
44 Allora il morto uscí, con le mani e i piedi legati con fasce e con la faccia avvolta in un asciugatoio. Gesú disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».
45 Allora molti dei Giudei, che erano venuti da Maria e avevano visto tutto quello che Gesú aveva fatto, credettero in lui.
46 Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quanto Gesú aveva fatto.
47 Allora i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono a il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo fa molti segni.
48 Se lo lasciamo andare avanti cosí, tutti crederanno in lui, verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo e la nostra nazione».
49 Ma uno di loro, Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla;
50 e non considerate che conviene per noi che un sol uomo muoia per il popolo e non perisca tutta la nazione».
51 Or egli non disse questo da se stesso; ma, essendo sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, profetizzò che Gesú doveva morire per la nazione,
52 e non solo per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere in uno i figli di Dio dispersi.
53 Da quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire.
54 Perciò Gesú non si aggirava piú pubblicamente tra i Giudei, ma si ritirò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città detta Efraim, e lí rimase con i suoi discepoli.
55 Or la Pasqua dei Giudei era vicina e molti di quella regione salirono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.
56 Cercavano dunque Gesú e, stando nel tempio, dicevano fra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?».
57 Or i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno sapeva dove egli era, lo segnalasse affinché potessero prenderlo.

Risurrezione di Lazzaro
11 Era allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betània, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella. 2 Maria era quella che aveva cosparso di olio profumato il Signore e gli aveva asciugato i piedi con i suoi capelli; suo fratello Lazzaro era malato. 3 Le sorelle mandarono dunque a dirgli: «Signore, ecco, il tuo amico è malato».
4 All'udire questo, Gesù disse: «Questa malattia non è per la morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, perché per essa il Figlio di Dio venga glorificato». 5 Gesù voleva molto bene a Marta, a sua sorella e a Lazzaro. 6 Quand'ebbe dunque sentito che era malato, si trattenne due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava. 7 Poi, disse ai discepoli: «Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea!». 8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ci vai di nuovo?». 9 Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo; 10 ma se invece uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché gli manca la luce». 11 Così parlò e poi soggiunse loro: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro s'è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo». 12 Gli dissero allora i discepoli: «Signore, se s'è addormentato, guarirà». 13 Gesù parlava della morte di lui, essi invece pensarono che si riferisse al riposo del sonno. 14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto 15 e io sono contento per voi di non essere stato là, perché voi crediate. Orsù, andiamo da lui!». 16 Allora Tommaso, chiamato Dìdimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!».
17 Venne dunque Gesù e trovò Lazzaro che era gia da quattro giorni nel sepolcro. 18 Betània distava da Gerusalemme meno di due miglia 19 e molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle per il loro fratello. 20 Marta dunque, come seppe che veniva Gesù, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa. 21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! 22 Ma anche ora so che qualunque cosa chiederai a Dio, egli te la concederà». 23 Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà». 24 Gli rispose Marta: «So che risusciterà nell'ultimo giorno». 25 Gesù le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muore, vivrà; 26 chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?». 27 Gli rispose: «Sì, o Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che deve venire nel mondo».
28 Dopo queste parole se ne andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama». 29 Quella, udito ciò, si alzò in fretta e andò da lui. 30 Gesù non era entrato nel villaggio, ma si trovava ancora là dove Marta gli era andata incontro. 31 Allora i Giudei che erano in casa con lei a consolarla, quando videro Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono pensando: «Va al sepolcro per piangere là». 32 Maria, dunque, quando giunse dov'era Gesù, vistolo si gettò ai suoi piedi dicendo: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!». 33 Gesù allora quando la vide piangere e piangere anche i Giudei che erano venuti con lei, si commosse profondamente, si turbò e disse: 34 «Dove l'avete posto?». Gli dissero: «Signore, vieni a vedere!». 35 Gesù scoppiò in pianto. 36 Dissero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come lo amava!». 37 Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Costui che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco non poteva anche far sì che questi non morisse?».
38 Intanto Gesù, ancora profondamente commosso, si recò al sepolcro; era una grotta e contro vi era posta una pietra. 39 Disse Gesù: «Togliete la pietra!». Gli rispose Marta, la sorella del morto: «Signore, gia manda cattivo odore, poiché è di quattro giorni». 40 Le disse Gesù: «Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?». 41 Tolsero dunque la pietra. Gesù allora alzò gli occhi e disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai ascoltato. 42 Io sapevo che sempre mi dai ascolto, ma l'ho detto per la gente che mi sta attorno, perché credano che tu mi hai mandato». 43 E, detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!». 44 Il morto uscì, con i piedi e le mani avvolti in bende, e il volto coperto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».
I capi Giudei decidono la morte di Gesù
45 Molti dei Giudei che erano venuti da Maria, alla vista di quel che egli aveva compiuto, credettero in lui. 46 Ma alcuni andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quel che Gesù aveva fatto. 47 Allora i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo compie molti segni. 48 Se lo lasciamo fare così, tutti crederanno in lui e verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo santo e la nostra nazione». 49 Ma uno di loro, di nome Caifa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla 50 e non considerate come sia meglio che muoia un solo uomo per il popolo e non perisca la nazione intera». 51 Questo però non lo disse da se stesso, ma essendo sommo sacerdote profetizzò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione 52 e non per la nazione soltanto, ma anche per riunire insieme i figli di Dio che erano dispersi. 53 Da quel giorno dunque decisero di ucciderlo.
54 Gesù pertanto non si faceva più vedere in pubblico tra i Giudei; egli si ritirò di là nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efraim, dove si trattenne con i suoi discepoli.

55 Era vicina la Pasqua dei Giudei e molti dalla regione andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi. 56 Essi cercavano Gesù e stando nel tempio dicevano tra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?». 57 Intanto i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che chiunque sapesse dove si trovava lo denunziasse, perché essi potessero prenderlo.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
