ט האם אינני אדם חופשי? האם אינני שליח האדון? האם לא ראיתי את האדון ישוע במו עיני? האם לא אני הבאתי אתכם לאמונה במשיח? 2 אולי לא נשלחתי אל אנשים אחרים, אך ללא ספק נשלחתי אליכם, שהרי באתם לאמונה במשיח באמצעותי.
3 זוהי תשובתי למטילים בי ספק. 4 האם אין לי בכלל זכויות? האם איני רשאי להתארח בבתיכם כמו השליחים האחרים? 5 האם אין לנו זכות לשאת אישה מאמינה, כמו השליחים האחרים ואחי האדון וגם כיפא? 6 האם רק בר-נבא ואני מוכרחים להמשיך לעבוד לפרנסתנו, בעוד שאתם תומכים בכסף בשליחים האחרים? 7 איזה חייל משלם מכיסו את הוצאותיו בתפקיד? או האם שמעתם פעם על כורם שאינו רשאי לטעום מהענבים שגידל? איזה רועה אינו רשאי לשתות מעט מחלב העדר שעליו הוא שומר? 8 אינני מצטט לכם כללים שהומצאו על-ידי בני-אדם; אני מצטט לכם את דבר ה'! 9 הרי כתוב בתורת משה[a]: "לא תחסם שור בדישו". הסבורים אתם שה' חשב רק על השור כשציווה זאת? 10 האם לא חשב אלוהים גם עלינו? ברור שכן! אלוהים רצה ללמדנו שהמאמינים שעובדים למען האדון ללא משכורת, צריכים לקבל תמיכה כלכלית מאלה המנצלים את שירותיהם. גם לחורש וגם לקוצר מגיע שכר מהיבול.
11 אנחנו זרענו בלבכם זרע רוחני. האם אנו מגזימים בבקשנו בתמורה מעט מזון ובגדים? 12 אתם מספקים מזון ובגדים לשליחים האחרים המלמדים אתכם, ואתם נוהגים כהלכה, אך האין זכותנו גדולה משלהם? למרות זאת מעולם לא ניצלנו זכות זאת, אלא סיפקנו בעצמנו את כל צרכינו ללא עזרתכם. מעולם לא דרשנו תמורה, מחשש שבגלל דרישה זאת תפסיקו את התעניינותכם בבשורת המשיח שהבאנו לכם.
13 האם אינכם יודעים שאלוהים נתן רשות לעובדי בית-המקדש לקחת לעצמם מה שהם צריכים מבין המנחות שהוקרבו לאלוהים? גם משרתי המזבח מקבלים חלק מהמזון המוקרב לה'. 14 באותה דרך ציווה אלוהים שמטיפי הבשורה יקבלו תמיכה מהשומעים. 15 ובכל זאת, מעולם לא ביקשתי מכם אגורה אחת! וגם עכשיו איני מנסה לרמוז לכם במכתבי שברצוני לקבל מהיום והלאה את המגיע לי. למעשה אני מעדיף לגווע ברעב, מאשר לאבד את הסיפוק וההנאה שיש לי מכך שאני מלמד אתכם חינם, ללא כל תשלום או תמורה. 16 אין לי סיבה להתפאר בהטפת הבשורה, שכן זוהי חובתי ואוי לי אם לא אבשר אותה.
17 אילו הייתי מתנדב מרצוני לשרת את האדון, אולי היה האדון מעניק לי שכר מיוחד. אך מצבי שונה: אלוהים עצמו בחר בי והפקיד בידי את הבשורה, ומשום כך אין לי ברירה. 18 מהו שכרי בנסיבות אלה? שכרי הוא השמחה והסיפוק שאני מקבל מהפצת הבשורה בחינם, ללא כל גמול ומבלי לדרוש משהו בחזרה. 19 למצב כזה יש יתרון חשוב מאוד: איני חייב דבר לאיש, כי איש אינו משלם לי שכר. ובכל זאת בחרתי מרצוני החופשי להיות עבד לכולם, כדי שאוכל להביא את בני-האדם לאמונה במשיח.
20 עם היהודים אני מתנהג כיהודי, כדי שאוכל לרכוש את אמונם ולספר להם על אודות המשיח. אינני מתווכח עם הגרים ששומרים את חוקי התורה, למרות שאיני מסכים איתם, כי ברצוני לעזור להם. 21 בהיותי בין הגויים אני משתף איתם פעולה, כל עוד איני עושה דבר שנוגד את אמונתי. כך אני רוחש את אמונם ויכול לעזור להם.
22 בהיותי בין אלה שמצפונם מציק להם על כל דבר קטן, איני מתנהג כ"יודע הכול" ואיני מזלזל בהם. משום כך הם מניחים לי לעזור להם. אתם רואים שאני משתדל למצוא מכנה-משותף עם כל אחד, כדי שאוכל לספר לו על המשיח, וכך יוכל להיוושע. 23 מדוע אני טורח כל-כך? – כדי שבני-האדם ישמעו את הבשורה, וכדי שאני עצמי אתברך כאשר אראה אותם באים לאמונה במשיח.
24 ידוע לכם שבכל מרוץ יש מתחרים רבים, אבל רק אחד מנצח וזוכה בפרס. רוצו גם אתם כך במטרה לזכות בפרס. 25 אם ברצונכם לנצח בתחרות, עליכם להתכחש לעצמכם, ולשכוח את כל מה שעלול להפריע לכם במרוץ. 26 לכן אני רץ ישר למטרה, ולכל צעד קדימה יש משמעות גדולה. אני נלחם כדי לנצח. אני מתייחס למרוץ ברצינות רבה ובכובד ראש.
27 אני מקשיח על גופי ככל הספורטאים – אני מאמנו לעשות מה שהוא צריך ולא מה שהוא רוצה. אחרת אני חושש שמא, לאחר שהטפתי לאחרים, אני עצמי אפסל ולא אוכל להשתתף במרוץ.

A Pattern of Self-Denial
9 Am (A)I not an apostle? Am I not free? (B)Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? (C)Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are (D)the [a]seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 (E)Do we have no [b]right to eat and drink? 5 Do we have no right to take along [c]a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, (F)the brothers of the Lord, and (G)Cephas? 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I (H)who have no right to refrain from working? 7 Who ever (I)goes to war at his own expense? Who (J)plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who (K)tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock?
8 Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, (L)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? 10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that (M)he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 (N)If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 12 If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?
(O)Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things (P)lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 (Q)Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the (R)temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? 14 Even so (S)the Lord has commanded (T)that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
15 But (U)I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for (V)it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for (W)necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, (X)I have a reward; but if against my will, (Y)I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That (Z)when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel [d]of Christ without charge, that I (AA)may not abuse my authority in the gospel.
Serving All Men
19 For though I am (AB)free from all men, (AC)I have made myself a servant to all, (AD)that I might win the more; 20 and (AE)to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the [e]law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 (AF)to (AG)those who are without law, as without law (AH)(not being without [f]law toward God, but under [g]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 (AI)to the weak I became [h]as weak, that I might win the weak. (AJ)I have become all things to all men, (AK)that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.
Striving for a Crown
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? (AL)Run in such a way that you may [i]obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize [j]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for (AM)an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: (AN)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 (AO)But I discipline my body and (AP)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become (AQ)disqualified.

Paul Surrenders His Rights
9 (A)Am I not free? (B)Am I not an apostle? (C)Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? (D)Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? 2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are (E)the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 This is my defense to those who would examine me. 4 (F)Do we not have the right to eat and drink? 5 (G)Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife,[a] as do the other apostles and (H)the brothers of the Lord and (I)Cephas? 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? 7 (J)Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? (K)Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?
8 Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, (L)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written (M)for our sake, because (N)the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 (O)If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, (P)we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything (Q)rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.
13 Do you not know that (R)those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that (S)those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.
15 But (T)I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone (U)deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For (V)necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with (W)a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching (X)I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
19 For (Y)though I am free from all, (Z)I have made myself a servant to all, that I might (AA)win more of them. 20 (AB)To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To (AC)those outside the law I became (AD)as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but (AE)under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 (AF)To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak.
