ה אני מזהיר את זקני הקהילה שביניכם, כזקן קהילה, כמי שראה במו עיניו את סבל המשיח, וכמי שיחד אתכם ייקח חלק בכבודו והדרו כשישוב אלינו: 2 רעו את צאנו של אלוהים; דאגו להן והשגיחו עליהן ברצון ולא מתוך אונס. אל תעשו שיקולי כדאיות, אלא עשו את המוטל עליכם מתוך רצון כן לשרת את אלוהים. 3 אל תשלטו בהן בעריצות; הנהיגו אותן באהבה ושמשו להן דוגמה אישית. 4 וכאשר יבוא שר הרועים, הוא יעניק לכם את כתר הכבוד שלא יבול לעולם.
5 צעירים, עליכם להישמע לזקני הקהילה. על כולכם לשרת איש את אחיו בענווה ולהיכנע איש לפני רעהו, כי אלוהים מברך את הענווים ומתנגד לגאים. 6 אם תשפילו את עצמכם תחת יד אלוהים החזקה, הוא ירומם אתכם בבוא העת. 7 הפקידו את כל הצרות, הפחדים והחששות שלכם ביד אלוהים, שהרי הוא תמיד דואג ועוזר לכם.
8 היזהרו והישמרו מפני השטן אויבכם, כי הוא מתהלך סביבכם כאריה שואג שמחפש טרף. 9 החזיקו מעמד נגד התקפותיו; ביטחו באלוהים, וזכרו שמאמינים רבים בכל העולם מתנסים כמוכם בסבל דומה.
10 לאחר שתסבלו זמן קצר יעניק לכם אלוהינו רב-החסד את כבודו הנצחי דרך המשיח, ואלוהים עצמו ישלים, יבנה ויחזק אתכם. 11 לאלוהים הכבוד והגבורה לעולם ועד. – אמן.
12 אני שולח לכם מכתב קצר זה באמצעות סילוונוס (שאותו אני מכיר כאח נאמן), כדי לעודד אתכם ולהבטיח לכם שהכתוב לעיל הוא דבר אמת מאת האלוהים. קחו את הדברים לתשומת לבכם וקיימו אותם.
13 הקהילה כאן ברומא[a], אחותכם באמונה, מוסרת לכם דרישת שלום. גם מרקוס בני מוסר לכם דרישת שלום. 14 ברכו איש את רעהו לשלום בנשיקת אהבה. שלום לכל אלה מכם המאמינים במשיח.

5 وَهَذِهِ وَصِيَّتِي إِلَى الشُّيُوخِ الَّذِينَ بَيْنَكُمْ، بِصِفَتِي شَيْخاً رَفِيقاً لَهُمْ، وَشَاهِداً لِآلامِ الْمَسِيحِ، وَشَرِيكاً فِي الْمَجْدِ الَّذِي سَيَتَجَلَّى: 2 ارْعَوْا قَطِيعَ اللهِ الَّذِي بَيْنَكُمْ، كَحُرَّاسٍ لَهُ، لَا بِدَافِعِ الْوَاجِبِ، بَلْ بِدَافِعِ التَّطَوُّعِ، كَمَا يُرِيدُ اللهُ، وَلا رَغْبَةً فِي الرِّبْحِ الدَّنِيءِ، بَلْ رَغْبَةً فِي الْخِدْمَةِ بِنَشَاطٍ. 3 لَا تَتَسَلَّطُوا عَلَى الْقَطِيعِ الَّذِي وَضَعَهُ اللهُ أَمَانَةً بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ، بَلْ كُونُوا قُدْوَةً لَهُ. 4 وَعِنْدَمَا يَظْهَرُ رَئِيسُ الرُّعَاةِ، تَنَالُونَ إِكْلِيلَ الْمَجْدِ الَّذِي لَا يَفْنَى.
5 كَذَلِكَ، أَيُّهَا الشَّبَابُ، اخْضَعُوا لِلشُّيُوخِ. الْبَسُوا جَمِيعاً ثَوْبَ التَّوَاضُعِ فِي مُعَامَلَتِكُمْ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ. لأَنَّ اللهَ يُقَاوِمُ الْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ، وَلَكِنَّهُ يُعْطِي الْمُتَوَاضِعِينَ نِعْمَةً. 6 إِذَنْ، تَوَاضَعُوا تَحْتَ يَدِ اللهِ القَدِيرَةِ لِكَيْ يَرْفَعَكُمْ عِنْدَمَا يَحِينُ الْوَقْتُ، 7 وَاطْرَحُوا عَلَيْهِ ثِقْلَ هُمُومِكُمْ كُلِّهَا، لأَنَّهُ هُوَ يَعْتَنِي بِكُمْ.
8 تَعَقَّلُوا وَتَنَبَّهُوا. إِنَّ خَصْمَكُمْ إِبْلِيسَ كَأَسَدٍ يَزْأَرُ، يَجُولُ بَاحِثاً عَنْ فَرِيسَةٍ يَبْتَلِعُهَا. 9 فَقَاوِمُوهُ، ثَابِتِينَ فِي الإِيمَانِ. وَاذْكُرُوا أَنَّ إِخْوَتَكُمُ الْمُنْتَشِرِينَ فِي الْعَالَمِ يَجْتَازُونَ وَسَطَ هذِهِ الآلامِ عَيْنِهَا.
10 وَبَعْدَ أَنْ تَتَأَلَّمُوا لِفَتْرَةٍ قَصِيرَةٍ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ، إِلَهَ كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ، الَّذِي دَعَاكُمْ إِلَى الاشْتِرَاكِ فِي مَجْدِهِ الأَبَدِيِّ فِي الْمَسِيحِ، لابُدَّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَكُمْ كَامِلِينَ وَثَابِتِينَ وَمُؤَيَّدِينَ بِالْقُوَّةِ وَرَاسِخِينَ. 11 لَهُ الْمَجْدُ وَالسُّلْطَةُ إِلَى أَبَدِ الآبِدِينَ. آمِين!

12 إِنِّي مُرْسِلٌ إِلَيْكُمْ هَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةَ الْقَصِيرَةَ بِيَدِ سِلْوَانُسَ الأَخِ الأَمِينِ. وَغَايَتِي أَنْ أُحَرِّضَكُمْ وَأَشْهَدَ لَكُمْ أَنَّ النِّعْمَةَ الَّتِي تَتَمَتَّعُونَ بِها هِيَ نِعْمَةُ اللهِ الْحَقِيقِيَّةُ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ فِيهَا ثَابِتُونَ.
13 وَمِنْ بَابِلَ، تُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكُمْ تِلْكَ الَّتِي اخْتَارَهَا اللهُ مَعَكُمْ، وَكَذلِكَ مَرْقُسُ ابْنِي. 14 سَلِّمُوا بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ بِقُبْلَةِ الْمَحَبَّةِ.
وَلْيَكُنِ السَّلامُ لَكُمْ جَمِيعاً، أَنْتُمُ الَّذِينَ فِي الْمَسِيحِ.

5 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Helping Christian Leaders
5 Church leaders, I am writing to encourage you. I too am a leader, as well as a witness to Christ's suffering, and I will share in his glory when it is shown to us.
2 (A) Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money. 3 Don't be bossy to those people who are in your care, but set an example for them. 4 Then when Christ the Chief Shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.
5 (B) All of you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble toward everyone else. The Scriptures say,
“God opposes proud people,
but he helps everyone
who is humble.”
6 (C) Be humble in the presence of God's mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes. 7 (D) God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.
8 Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack. 9 But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith. You know that all over the world the Lord's followers are suffering just as you are. 10 But God shows undeserved kindness to everyone. That's why he appointed Christ Jesus to choose you to share in his eternal glory. You will suffer for a while, but God will make you complete, steady, strong, and firm. 11 God will be in control forever! Amen.

12 (E) Silvanus helped me write this short letter, and I consider him a faithful follower of the Lord. I wanted to encourage you and tell you how kind God really is, so you will keep on having faith in him.
