17 لُقْمَةُ خُبْزٍ جَافَّةٌ مَصْحُوبَةٌ بِالسَّلامِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ بَيْتٍ مَلِيءٍ بِذَبَائِحَ وَيَسُودُهُ الْخِصَامُ. الْعَبْدُ الْعَاقِلُ يَسُودُ عَلَى الابْنِ الْفَاجِرِ، وَيُشَارِكُ الإِخْوَةَ فِي الْمِيرَاثِ. كَمَا تُنَقِّي الْبُوْتَقَةُ الفِضَّةَ، وَالْكُورُ الذَّهَبَ، فَإِنَّ الرَّبَّ يَمْتَحِنُ الْقُلُوبَ أَيْضاً. فَاعِلُ الإِثْمِ يُصْغِي لِكَلامِ الشَّرِّ، وَالْكَاذِبُ يَتَجَاوَبُ مَعَ أَقْوَالِ السُّوءِ. الْمُسْتَهْزِئُ بِالْفَقِيرِ يَحْتَقِرُ صَانِعَهُ، وَالشَّامِتُ بِالْبَلِيَّةِ لَا يُفْلِتُ مِنَ الْعِقَابِ. تَاجُ الشُّيُوخِ الأَحْفَادُ، وَفَخْرُ الأَبْنَاءِ آبَاؤُهُمْ. لَا يَصِحُّ لِلْجَاهِلِ أَنْ يَنْطِقَ بِمَأْثُورِ الْقَوْلِ، وَأَشَرُّ مِنْهُ الْكَذِبُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ النَّبِيلِ. الرِّشْوَةُ تَعْوِيذَةٌ فِي عَيْنَيْ مُهْدِيهَا، وَحَيْثُمَا تَوَجَّهَ يُفْلِحُ. مَنْ يَصْفَحْ عَنِ الذَّنْبِ يَلْتَمِسْ الْمَحَبَّةَ، وَالوَاشِي يُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ الأَصْدِقَاءِ الْحَمِيمِينَ.

10 يُؤَثِّرُ التَّأْنِيبُ فِي الْحَكِيمِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ تَأْثِيرِ مِئَةِ جَلْدَةٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِ. 11 الشِّرِّيرُ يَسْعَى فَقَطْ لِلتَّمَرُّدِ، فَيَنْقَضُّ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولٌ قَاسٍ. 12 مُصَادَفَةُ دُبَّةٍ ثَكُولٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ مُصَادَفَةِ جَاهِلٍ مُتَوَرِّطٍ فِي حَمَاقَتِهِ.

13 مَنْ يُجَازِي خَيْراً بِشَرٍّ، لَنْ يَبْرَحَ الشَّرُّ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ. 14 بِدَايَةُ الْخِصَامِ كَتَفَجُّرِ الْمِيَاهِ، فَاتْرُكِ الْخِصَامَ قَبْلَ انْفِجَارِهِ. 15 مُبْرِئُ الْمُذْنِبِ وَمُذَنِّبُ الْبَرِيءِ كِلاهُمَا رِجْسٌ عِنْدَ الرَّبِّ. 16 مَا جَدْوَى أَنْ يَكُونَ لَدَى الْجَاهِلِ مَالٌ لاقْتِنَاءِ الْحِكْمَةِ، وَهُوَ لَا يَمْلِكُ الْفَهْمَ لِتَعَلُّمِهَا. 17 الصِّدِّيقُ يُحِبُّ فِي كُلِّ حِينٍ، وَالأَخُ يُولَدُ لِيَكُونَ عَوْناً فِي الضِّيقِ. 18 الأَحْمَقُ مَنْ يَكْفَلُ سِوَاهُ بِصَفْقِ الْكَفِّ، وَيَضْمَنُ جَارَهُ ضَمَاناً كَامِلاً 19 مَنْ يُحِبَّ الإِثْمَ يُحِبَّ الْمُشَاجَرَةَ، وَمَنْ يُكْثِرْ مِنَ الْمُبَاهَاةِ يَجْلِبْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ الدَّمَارَ. 20 ذُو الْقَلْبِ الْمُعَوَّجِ لَا يُفْلِحُ، وَصَاحِبُ اللِّسَانِ الْمُنَافِقِ يَقَعُ فِي الْبَلِيَّةِ. 21 مَنْ أَنْجَبَ جَاهِلاً صَارَ غَمّاً لَهُ، وَأَبُو الأَحْمَقِ لَا يَعْرِفُ الْفَرَحَ. 22 الْقَلْبُ الْمَسْرُورُ دَوَاءٌ شَافٍ، وَالرُّوحُ الْمُنْسَحِقَةُ تُبْلِي الْعِظَامَ. 23 الشِّرِّيرُ يَأْخُذُ الرِّشْوَةَ مِنَ الْحِضْنِ لِيُحَرِّفَ سَيْرَ الْقَضَاءِ. 24 الْحِكْمَةُ هِيَ غَايَةُ العَاقِلِ أَمَّا عَيْنَا الْجَاهِلِ فَزَائِغَتَانِ إِلَى أَقَاصِي الأَرْضِ. 25 الابْنُ الْجَاهِلُ مَبْعَثُ تَعَاسَةٍ لأَبِيهِ، وَمَرَارَةُ قَلْبٍ لأُمِّهِ. 26 أَيْضاً لَا يَلِيقُ تَغْرِيمُ الْبَرِيءِ، وَلا جَلْدُ الشُّرَفَاءِ تَقْوِيماً لَهُمْ. 27 ذُو الْمَعْرِفَةِ يَتَرَوَّى فِي كَلِمَاتِهِ، وَالْعَاقِلُ ذُو رَبَاطَةِ جَأْشٍ. 28 حَتَّى الْجَاهِلُ، إِنْ صَمَتَ، يُحْسَبُ حَكِيماً، وَإِنْ أَطْبَقَ شَفَتَيْهِ يُحْسَبُ عَاقِلاً.

17 Un tozzo di pane secco con tranquillità è meglio
di una casa piena di banchetti festosi e di discordia.
Lo schiavo intelligente prevarrà su un figlio disonorato
e avrà parte con i fratelli all'eredità.
Il crogiuolo è per l'argento e il forno per l'oro,
ma chi prova i cuori è il Signore.
Il maligno presta attenzione a un labbro maledico,
il bugiardo ascolta una lingua nociva.
Chi deride il povero offende il suo creatore,
chi gioisce della sciagura altrui non resterà impunito.
Corona dei vecchi sono i figli dei figli,
onore dei figli i loro padri.
Non conviene all'insensato un linguaggio elevato,
ancor meno al principe un linguaggio falso.
Il dono è come un talismano per il proprietario:
dovunque si volga ha successo.
Chi copre la colpa si concilia l'amicizia,
ma chi la divulga divide gli amici.
10 Fa più una minaccia all'assennato
che cento percosse allo stolto.
11 Il malvagio non cerca altro che la ribellione,
ma gli sarà mandato contro un messaggero senza pietà.
12 Meglio incontrare un'orsa privata dei figli
che uno stolto in preda alla follia.
13 Chi rende male per bene
vedrà sempre la sventura in casa.
14 Iniziare un litigio è come aprire una diga,
prima che la lite si esasperi, troncala.
15 Assolvere il reo e condannare il giusto
sono due cose in abominio al Signore.
16 A che serve il denaro in mano allo stolto?
Forse a comprar la sapienza, se egli non ha senno?
17 Un amico vuol bene sempre,
è nato per essere un fratello nella sventura.
18 E' privo di senno l'uomo che offre garanzie
e si dà come garante per il suo prossimo.
19 Chi ama la rissa ama il delitto,
chi alza troppo l'uscio cerca la rovina.
20 Un cuore perverso non troverà mai felicità,
una lingua tortuosa andrà in malora.
21 Chi genera uno stolto ne avrà afflizione;
non può certo gioire il padre di uno sciocco.
22 Un cuore lieto fa bene al corpo,
uno spirito abbattuto inaridisce le ossa.
23 L'iniquo accetta regali di sotto il mantello
per deviare il corso della giustizia.
24 L'uomo prudente ha la sapienza davanti a sé,
ma gli occhi dello stolto vagano in capo al mondo.
25 Un figlio stolto è un tormento per il padre
e un'amarezza per colei che lo ha partorito.
26 Non sta bene multare chi ha ragione
e peggio ancora colpire gli innocenti.
27 Chi è parco di parole possiede la scienza;
uno spirito calmo è un uomo intelligente.
28 Anche lo stolto, se tace, passa per saggio
e, se tien chiuse le labbra, per intelligente.

17 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
    than a house full of feasting, with strife.(A)

A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son
    and will share the inheritance as one of the family.

The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,(B)

A wicked person listens to deceitful lips;
    a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

Children’s children(H) are a crown to the aged,
    and parents are the pride of their children.

Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool—
    how much worse lying lips to a ruler!(I)

A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it;
    they think success will come at every turn.(J)

Whoever would foster love covers over an offense,(K)
    but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.(L)

10 A rebuke impresses a discerning person
    more than a hundred lashes a fool.

11 Evildoers foster rebellion against God;
    the messenger of death will be sent against them.

12 Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs
    than a fool bent on folly.(M)

13 Evil will never leave the house
    of one who pays back evil(N) for good.(O)

14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
    so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.(P)

15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent(Q)
    the Lord detests them both.(R)

16 Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom,
    when they are not able to understand it?(S)

17 A friend loves at all times,
    and a brother is born for a time of adversity.(T)

18 One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge
    and puts up security for a neighbor.(U)

19 Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;
    whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.

20 One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper;
    one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble.

21 To have a fool for a child brings grief;
    there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.(V)

22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,
    but a crushed(W) spirit dries up the bones.(X)

23 The wicked accept bribes(Y) in secret
    to pervert the course of justice.(Z)

24 A discerning person keeps wisdom in view,
    but a fool’s eyes(AA) wander to the ends of the earth.

25 A foolish son brings grief to his father
    and bitterness to the mother who bore him.(AB)

26 If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good,(AC)
    surely to flog honest officials is not right.

27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint,(AD)
    and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.(AE)

28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,
    and discerning if they hold their tongues.(AF)

15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.

16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
