La fuga in Egitto
42 Tutti i capi delle bande armate e Giovanni figlio di Kàreca, e Azaria figlio di Osaia e tutto il popolo, dai piccoli ai grandi, si presentarono 2 al profeta Geremia e gli dissero: «Ti sia gradita la nostra supplica! Prega per noi il Signore tuo Dio, in favore di tutto questo residuo di popolazione, perché noi siamo rimasti in pochi dopo essere stati molti, come vedi con i tuoi occhi. 3 Il Signore tuo Dio ci indichi la via per la quale dobbiamo andare e che cosa dobbiamo fare». 4 Il profeta Geremia rispose loro: «Comprendo! Ecco, pregherò il Signore vostro Dio secondo le vostre parole e vi riferirò quanto il Signore risponde per voi; non vi nasconderò nulla».
5 Essi allora dissero a Geremia: «Il Signore sia contro di noi testimone verace e fedele, se non faremo quanto il Signore tuo Dio ti rivelerà per noi. 6 Che ci sia gradita o no, noi ascolteremo la voce del Signore nostro Dio al quale ti mandiamo, perché ce ne venga bene obbedendo alla voce del Signore nostro Dio».
7 Al termine di dieci giorni, la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Geremia. 8 Questi chiamò Giovanni figlio di Kàreca e tutti i capi delle bande armate che erano con lui e tutto il popolo, dai piccoli ai grandi, 9 e riferì loro: «Dice il Signore, Dio di Israele, al quale mi avete inviato perché gli presentassi la vostra supplica: 10 Se continuate ad abitare in questa regione, vi renderò stabili e non vi distruggerò, vi pianterò e non vi sradicherò, perché ho pietà del male che vi ho arrecato. 11 Non temete il re di Babilonia, che vi incute timore; non temetelo - dice il Signore - perché io sarò con voi per salvarvi e per liberarvi dalla sua mano. 12 Io gli ispirerò sentimenti di pietà per voi, così egli avrà compassione di voi e vi lascerà dimorare nel vostro paese. 13 Se invece, non dando retta alla voce del Signore vostro Dio, voi direte: Non vogliamo abitare in questo paese, 14 e direte: No, vogliamo andare nel paese d'Egitto, perché là non vedremo guerre e non udremo squilli di tromba né soffriremo carestia di pane: là abiteremo; 15 in questo caso ascolta la parola del Signore, o resto di Giuda: Dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: Se voi intendete veramente andare in Egitto e vi andate per stabilirvi colà, 16 ebbene, la spada che temete vi raggiungerà laggiù nel paese d'Egitto, e la fame che temete vi sarà addosso laggiù in Egitto e là morirete. 17 Allora tutti gli uomini che avranno deciso di recarsi in Egitto per dimorarvi moriranno di spada, di fame e di peste. Nessuno di loro scamperà o sfuggirà alla sventura che io manderò su di loro. 18 Poiché, dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: Come si è rovesciato il mio furore e la mia ira contro gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, così la mia ira si rovescerà contro di voi quando sarete andati in Egitto. Voi sarete oggetto di maledizione, di orrore, di esecrazione e di scherno e non vedrete mai più questo luogo».
19 Questo vi dice il Signore, o superstiti di Giuda: «Non andate in Egitto. Sappiate bene che oggi io vi ho solennemente avvertiti. 20 Poiché avete messo a rischio le vostre vite, quando mi avete mandato dal Signore vostro Dio, dicendomi: Intercedi per noi presso il Signore nostro Dio, dicci ciò che il Signore nostro Dio dirà e noi lo eseguiremo. 21 Oggi ve l'ho riferito, ma voi non ascoltate la voce del Signore vostro Dio riguardo a tutto ciò per cui egli mi ha inviato a voi. 22 Perciò sappiate bene che morirete di spada, di fame e di peste nel luogo in cui desiderate andare a dimorare».

42 Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,
2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the Lord thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
3 That the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.
4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the Lord your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the Lord shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, The Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the Lord thy God shall send thee to us.
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.
7 And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah.
8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,
9 And said unto them, Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him;
10 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the Lord: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
12 And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.
13 But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the Lord your God,
14 Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
15 And now therefore hear the word of the Lord, ye remnant of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;
16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.
17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
18 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.
19 The Lord hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.
20 For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the Lord your God, saying, Pray for us unto the Lord our God; and according unto all that the Lord our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.
21 And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.
22 Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn.

42 Then all the army officers, including Johanan(A) son of Kareah and Jezaniah[a] son of Hoshaiah,(B) and all the people from the least to the greatest(C) approached 2 Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray(D) to the Lord your God for this entire remnant.(E) For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few(F) are left. 3 Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”(G)
4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray(H) to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell(I) you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.”(J)
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true(K) and faithful(L) witness(M) against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well(N) with us, for we will obey(O) the Lord our God.”
7 Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(P) who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest.(Q) 9 He said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition,(R) says:(S) 10 ‘If you stay in this land,(T) I will build(U) you up and not tear you down; I will plant(V) you and not uproot you,(W) for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you.(X) 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon,(Y) whom you now fear.(Z) Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save(AA) you and deliver you from his hands.(AB) 12 I will show you compassion(AC) so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.’(AD)
13 “However, if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and so disobey(AE) the Lord your God, 14 and if you say, ‘No, we will go and live in Egypt,(AF) where we will not see war or hear the trumpet(AG) or be hungry for bread,’(AH) 15 then hear the word of the Lord,(AI) you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16 then the sword(AJ) you fear(AK) will overtake you there, and the famine(AL) you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die.(AM) 17 Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague;(AN) not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.’ 18 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and wrath(AO) have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem,(AP) so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse[b](AQ) and an object of horror,(AR) a curse[c] and an object of reproach;(AS) you will never see this place again.’(AT)
19 “Remnant(AU) of Judah, the Lord has told you, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’(AV) Be sure of this: I warn you today 20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, ‘Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.’(AW) 21 I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you.(AX) 22 So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine(AY) and plague(AZ) in the place where you want to go to settle.”(BA)

42 Now all the captains of the forces, (A)Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, (B)“Please, let our petition be acceptable to you, and (C)pray for us to the Lord your God, for all this remnant (since we are left but (D)a few of many, as you can see), 3 that the Lord your God may show us (E)the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.”
4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Indeed, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it shall be, that (F)whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare it to you. I will (G)keep nothing back from you.”

And (V)you shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.’
19 “The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah, (W)‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have [d]admonished you this day. 20 For you [e]were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have (X)not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, or anything which He has sent you by me. 22 Now therefore, know certainly that you (Y)shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to dwell.”
