그리스도는 우리를 도우시는 분
2 사랑하는 자녀 여러분, 여러분이 죄짓지 않게 하려고 이 글을 씁니다. 그러나 혹 어떤 사람이 죄를 짓더라도, 우리에게는 아버지 앞에서 우리의 죄를 용서해 달라고 간청해 주시는 분이 계십니다. 곧 의로우신 예수 그리스도이십니다. 2 그분은 우리의 죄를 없애 주시려고 몸소 희생 제물이 되셨습니다. 그분은 우리의 죄뿐만 아니라 세상 모든 사람의 죄를 위하여 그렇게 되셨습니다.
3 우리가 하나님의 계명을 지키면, 이것으로 우리가 하나님을 알게 되었음을 압니다. 4 만일 어떤 사람이 “나는 하나님을 안다.” 고 말하면서 하나님의 계명을 지키지 않으면, 그 사람은 거짓말쟁이입니다. 그리고 그런 사람 속에는 진리가 없습니다. 5 그러나 누구든지 하나님의 계명에 순종하면, 하나님의 사랑[a]이 그 사람 안에서 참으로 완성됩니다. 이것으로 우리가 하나님 안에 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 6 하나님 안에서 산다고 주장하는 사람은, 예수 그리스도께서 사신 것처럼 살아야 합니다.
하나님은 다른 사람을 사랑하라고 가르치신다
7 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 내가 새 계명을 여러분에게 써 보내는 것이 아닙니다. 나는 여러분이 처음부터 가지고 있는 옛 계명을 써 보냅니다. 이 옛 계명은 여러분이 이미 들은 말씀입니다. 8 그러나 나는 여러분에게 이 계명을 새 계명으로 써 보냅니다. 이 계명이 참되다는 것은 그리스도의 삶과 여러분의 삶을 보아 알 수 있습니다. 그것은, 어둠이 물러나기 시작하였고, 참 빛이 벌써 비치고 있기 때문입니다.
9 누구든지 빛[b] 속에 산다고 말하면서 형제를 미워하는 사람은, 여전히 어둠 속에 사는 사람입니다. 10 형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 속에 살고 있으며, 그 사람 속에는[c] 그를 넘어지게 하는 것이 아무것도 없습니다. 11 그러나 형제를 미워하는 사람은 어둠 속에 있는 사람입니다. 어둠이 그의 눈을 가리고 있기 때문에, 그는 자기가 어디로 가고 있는지 모릅니다.
12 사랑하는 자녀 여러분
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은
그리스도를 통해
여러분의 죄가 용서되었기 때문입니다.
13 세상의 아버지들이여
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은
여러분이 세상 처음부터 계셨던 하나님을
알고 있기 때문입니다.
세상의 젊은이들이여
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은,
여러분이 그 악한 자[d]를
물리쳤기 때문입니다.

아버지를 알고 있기 때문입니다.
아버지가 된 여러분
내가 이 글을 여러분에게 쓰는 까닭은
여러분이
처음부터 계셨던 분을 알고 있기 때문입니다.
젊은이들이여
내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 까닭은
여러분이 굳건하고
하나님의 말씀이 여러분 안에 있어
그 악한 자를 물리쳤기 때문입니다.
15 이 세상이나, 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 세상을 사랑하는 사람들 속에는 아버지를 사랑하는 마음이 없습니다. 16 세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 우리의 이기적인 욕망[e]을 채워 줄 것들을 원하는 것, 눈에 보이는 모든 것을 원하는 것, 그리고 우리가 가진 것들을 자랑거리로 삼는 것, 이 모든 것은 아버지께로부터 오는 것이 아니라 세상에서 오는 것입니다. 17 이 세상은 곧 사라집니다. 세상이 낳은 욕망도 세상과 더불어 사라집니다. 그러나 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 삽니다.
그리스도의 적을 따르지 마라
18 사랑하는 내 자녀들이여, 지금이 마지막 시간입니다. 여러분은 그리스도의 적이 오리라는 말을 들었습니다. 그 말대로 벌써 많은 그리스도의 적이 와 있습니다. 이것으로 우리는 지금이 마지막 시간이라는 것을 압니다. 19 그리스도의 적들은 우리에게서 나갔습니다. 그러나 그들은 정말로 우리에게 속했던 자들이 아닙니다. 만일 그들이 정말로 우리에게 속했더라면, 그들은 우리와 함께 남아 있었을 것입니다. 그들이 우리를 떠났다는 사실이, 그들 가운데 어느 한 사람도 우리에게 속한 사람이 아니었다는 것을 나타냅니다.
20 그러나 여러분은 거룩하신 분에게서 기름 부으심[f]을 받았습니다. 그래서 여러분은 모두 진리를 알고 있습니다. 21 내가 여러분에게 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 진리를 모르기 때문이 아닙니다. 오히려 여러분이 진리를 잘 알고 있기 때문이며, 또 진리에서는 결코 거짓말이 나오지 않는다는 것도 알고 있기 때문입니다.
22 누가 거짓말쟁이입니까? 예수께서 그리스도가 아니라고 말하는 사람입니다. 그런 사람은 그리스도의 적이요, 아버지도 아들도 부인하는 자입니다. 23 누구든지 아들을 인정하지 않는 사람은 아버지를 모시지 않는 사람입니다. 그러나 아들을 인정하는 사람은 아버지 또한 모시는 사람입니다.
24 여러분은 처음부터 배운 것을 여러분 속에 간직하십시오. 여러분이 처음부터 배운 그것이 여러분 안에서 살고 있으면, 여러분도 아들과 아버지 안에서 살 것입니다. 25 이것이 바로 그리스도께서 우리에게 주시기로 약속하신 것 곧 영원한 삶입니다.
26 내가 여러분을 속이려 하는 자들에 관해서 지금까지 썼습니다. 27 그러나 여러분으로 말하자면, 그리스도께서 부어 주신 성령이 여러분 안에 살아 계시니, 여러분에게는 가르쳐 줄 사람이 필요하지 않습니다. 그리스도의 성령께서 모든 것에 관하여 여러분에게 가르쳐 주십니다. 그리고 그분은 진실하셔서 거짓말하지 않으십니다. 여러분은 그 성령님께서 여러분에게 가르쳐 주신 대로 언제나 그리스도 안에서 살아가십시오.
28 사랑하는 어린 자녀들이여, 그리스도 안에서 살아가십시오. 그러면 그리스도께서 나타나시는 날에 우리가 자신을 갖게 되고, 다시 오시는 그분 앞에서 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 것입니다.
29 하나님께서 의로우신 분이라는 것을 여러분이 알고 있다면, 옳은 일을 하는 사람은 모두 하나님께로부터 났다는 것도 알 것입니다.

2 My dear children,(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(D)
Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers
3 We know(E) that we have come to know him(F) if we keep his commands.(G) 4 Whoever says, “I know him,”(H) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(I) 5 But if anyone obeys his word,(J) love for God[a] is truly made complete in them.(K) This is how we know(L) we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(M)
7 Dear friends,(N) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.(O) This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command;(P) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing(Q) and the true light(R) is already shining.(S)
9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[b](T) is still in the darkness.(U) 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[c] lives in the light,(V) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.(W) 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister(X) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.(Y) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.(Z)
Reasons for Writing
12 I am writing to you, dear children,(AA)
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.(AB)
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AC)
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome(AD) the evil one.(AE)
14 I write to you, dear children,(AF)
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AG)
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,(AH)
and the word of God(AI) lives in you,(AJ)
and you have overcome the evil one.(AK)
On Not Loving the World
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(AL) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[d] is not in them.(AM) 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(AN) the lust of the eyes,(AO) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away,(AP) but whoever does the will of God(AQ) lives forever.
Warnings Against Denying the Son
18 Dear children, this is the last hour;(AR) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,(AS) even now many antichrists have come.(AT) This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us,(AU) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.(AV)
20 But you have an anointing(AW) from the Holy One,(AX) and all of you know the truth.[e](AY) 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it(AZ) and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.(BA) 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.(BB)
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning(BC) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.(BD) 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.(BE)
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.(BF) 27 As for you, the anointing(BG) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things(BH) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.(BI)
God’s Children and Sin
28 And now, dear children,(BJ) continue in him, so that when he appears(BK) we may be confident(BL) and unashamed before him at his coming.(BM)
29 If you know that he is righteous,(BN) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.(BO)

2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Christ Our Advocate
2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. The New Commandment

Do Not Love the World
15 (AA)Do not love the world or the things in the world. Warning Concerning Antichrists
18 Children, (AF)it is the last hour, and as you have heard that (AG)antichrist is coming, so now (AH)many antichrists have come. (AI)Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 (AJ)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (AK)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, (AL)that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been (AM)anointed by (AN)the Holy One, and (AO)you all have knowledge.[d] 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but (AP)he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is (AQ)the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (AR)No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let (AS)what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then (AT)you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us[e]—(AU)eternal life.
26 I write these things to you about (AV)those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But (AW)the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and (AX)you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and (AY)is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
Children of God
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that (AZ)when he appears (BA)we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his (BB)coming. 29 If you know that (BC)he is righteous, you may be sure that (BD)everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
