악한 유다 사람들
5 주께서 말씀하신다.
“예루살렘 거리를 위 아래로 다녀 보라.
이리 저리 두루 살펴보라.
광장마다 샅샅이 뒤져보라.
네가 사람을 정직하게 대하고
진리를 좇는 자를
한 사람만이라도 찾아낸다면
나 이 성읍을 용서하리라.
2 그들은 말로는
‘주님이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세한다.’고 하면서도
모두 거짓으로 맹세한다.”
3 오, 주님.
당신은 진실한 사람을 찾으시지 않습니까?
당신께서 그들을 때리셨어도
그들은 아픔을 느끼지 못하고
그들을 깡그리 멸하셨어도
그들은 주님의 가르침을 받아들이지 않았습니다.
그들은 얼굴을 바위보다 더 굳게 하고는
당신께 돌아오기를 거절했습니다.
4 그래서 저는 이런 생각을 했습니다.
“이들은 가난하고 어리석은 백성들일 뿐이야.
주님의 길을 모르고
자기들의 하나님께서 바라시는 것이 무엇인지도 모르니
어리석게 행동할 밖에.
5 그러니 지도자들에게나 가서 물어봐야지.
그들은 틀림없이 주님의 길을 알고
자기들의 하나님께서 바라시는 것이 무엇인지도 알 거야.”
그러나 그들도 하나같이 고삐 풀린 망아지
굴레 벗은 말이 되어버렸습니다.
6 그러므로 숲에서 사자가 나와 그들을 덮치고
사막에서 늑대가 나와 그들을 물어죽입니다.
표범이 그들의 성읍 가까이에서 기다리고 있다가
성에서 나오는 사람을 모두 갈가리 찢어 죽입니다.
그들의 반역죄가 크고 지은 죄가 많기 때문입니다.
7 주께서 물으신다.
“왜 내가 너를 용서해야 한단 말이냐?
네 자녀들이 나를 버리고
신도 아닌 것들을 걸어 맹세한다.
그들에게 필요한 것을 내가 다 주었더니
그들은 간음이나 하고
줄지어 창녀들의 집을 드나든다.
8 그들은 잘 먹어 발정한 말들처럼 남의 아내를 탐내어 힝힝거린다.
9 이런 일을 보고 내가 벌주지 않을 수가 있겠느냐?”
주께서 말씀하신다.
“이런 백성에게
내가 복수하지 않을 수가 있겠느냐?”
10 “너희는 예루살렘의 포도밭을 뚫고 들어가
포도밭을 짓밟아 놓아라.
그러나 완전히 망쳐놓지는 말아라.
그 넝쿨들만 잘라버려라.
그것들은 주의 것이 아니다.
11 이스라엘 집안과 유다 집안이 나를 완전히 저버렸다.”
주께서 말씀하신다.
12 그들은 주님에 대하여 거짓말하기를
“주께서는 상관치 않으실 것이다.
어떤 해로운 일도 우리에게 닥치지 않을 것이며
우리는 전쟁도 굶주림도 겪지 않을 것이다.
13 예언자라는 것들은 말뿐인 허풍선이들.
그들에게는 말씀이 없다.
재난이 닥치리라는 그들의 예언은 그들에게나 닥치라지.” 한다.
14 그러므로 만군의 주 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다.
“그들이 그렇게 생각하기 때문에
나는 내 말이 네 입 속에서 불이 되게 하고
이 백성은 그 불에 타버리는 장작이 되게 하리라.
15 오, 이스라엘 백성아
내가 멀리서 한 민족을 데려다가 너희를 치게 하리라.
그 민족은 오래된 민족이고 강한 민족이며
그들은 너희가 모르는 말을 쓰며
그들이 말을 하여도 너희는 알아들을 수 없다.
16 그들의 화살통은 입 벌린 무덤과 같고
그들은 모두 힘센 용사들이다.
17 그들은 네가 추수한 것과 네 음식을 먹어치우고
네 아들과 딸들을 삼키리라.
네 양과 소 떼를 삼키고
네 포도와 무화과를 삼키리라.
그들은 네가 믿었던 튼튼한 성들을 칼로 무너뜨리리라.”
18 “하지만 그 날에도 내가 너희를 완전히 없애지는 않을 것이다.” 주께서 말씀하신다. 19 “예레미야야, 그들이 ‘주 우리 하나님께서 어찌하여 이런 일들을 우리에게 하시느냐?’고 묻거든 너는 이렇게 대답해 주어라. ‘그것은 너희가 나를 떠나서 네 땅에서 외국 신들을 섬겼기 때문이다. 그러므로 이제 너희는 너희 땅이 아닌 곳에서 외국인들을 섬길 것이다.’
20 너는 이 말을 야곱의 집에 알리고
유다 백성에게 들려주어라.
21 들어라.
이 어리석고 지각없는 백성아.
눈이 있어도 보지 못하고
귀가 있어도 듣지 못하는 백성아.
22 너희는 내가 두렵지도 않느냐?”
주께서 말씀하신다.
“너희는 내 앞에서 떨리지도 않느냐?
나는 바다를 모래톱으로 둘러 바닷물이 영원히 넘지 못할 경계선을 그어 놓았다.
파도가 넘실거려도 그 경계를 넘을 수 없고
파도가 아무리 으르렁거려도 그 경계는 넘지 못한다.
23 그러나 이 백성은 고집 세고
나를 거스르는 마음을 가지고 있어
내게 등을 돌리고 멀리 떠나가 버렸다.
24 너희는 마음속으로라도
‘때에 맞춰 봄비와 가을비를 내려 주시는 분
정해진 때에 추수를 할 수 있게 해 주시는 분을 두려워하자.’라고 말하지 않는다.
25 네가 저지른 죄악들이 너를 가로막아
이런 복들을 받아 누리지 못하게 했고
네 죄들 때문에 이런 좋은 것들을 네가 빼앗겼다.
26 내 백성들 가운데 사악한 자들이 있어
사냥꾼들이 새잡이 그물을 치듯
덫을 놓아 사람들을 잡는다.
27 잡힌 새들이 그득한 새장처럼
그들의 집은 속여 빼앗은 재물로 가득하다.
그들은 부자가 되어 세도를 휘두르고
28 피둥피둥 살이 쪄 번들거린다.
그들이 저지르는 악한 짓에는 끝이 없고
아비 없는 고아들과 가난한 이들의 권리를 찾아주기 위한
공정한 재판도 하지 않는다.
29 이런 짓들을 하는 그들을 내가 벌주지 않을 수가 있겠느냐?”
주께서 말씀하신다.
“이런 민족에게
내가 앙갚음 하지 않을 수가 있겠느냐?”
30 무섭고도 놀라운 일들이 이 땅에서 일어나고 있다.
31 예언자들은 거짓 예언을 하고
제사장들은 제멋대로 다스리고
내 백성은 도리어 이런 것을 좋다고 하니
마지막 때가 다다르면 너희가 어찌 하려느냐?

5 “너희는 예루살렘 거리로 가서 이리저리 왔다갔다하며 사방 찾아보아라. 너희 가 만일 정직하고 진실한 자를 한 사람이라도 발견하면 내가 이 성을 용서하겠다.
2 너희는 나 여호와의 이름으로 맹세한다고 말하지만 그것은 거짓말이다.”
3 여호와여, 주의 눈은 진리를 찾지 않으십니까? 주께서 그들을 치셨으나 그들은 아픔을 느끼지 않았으며 주께서 그들을 거의 전멸시키다시피 하셨으나 그들은 주의 징계를 받아들이지 않고 여전히 고집을 피우며 돌아오지 않았습니다.
4 그때 나는 이런 생각을 했습니다. “이들은 정말 불쌍하고 미련한 자들이구나. 자기 하나님이 무엇을 요구하시며 무엇을 원하는지도 모르고 있다.
5 내가 지도자들에게 가서 말하겠다. 그들은 여호와의 길과 하나님이 요구하시는 것이 무엇인지 알고 있다.” 그러나 그들은 모두 하나같이 자기들의 하나님을 거절해 버렸습니다.
6 그러므로 숲속에서 나오는 사자가 그들을 죽이며 사막의 이리가 갑자기 그들을 덮치며 표범이 그들의 성 주변에 숨어 있다가 성에서 나오는 자마다 모조리 찢어 버릴 것입니다.
7 “내가 어떻게 너희를 용서하겠느냐? 너희 자녀들까지도 나를 버리고 신이 아닌 것들을 섬겼다. 내가 그들을 배불리 먹였으나 오히려 그들은 간음하며 창녀의 집에 모여들었다.
8 그들은 잘먹고 정욕이 왕성한 수말처럼 서로 색정을 이기지 못해 자기 이웃의 아내를 찾아다닌다.
9 나 여호와가 말한다. 내가 이런 일을 보고서도 어찌 그들을 벌하지 않으며 이런 민족에게 보복하지 않겠느냐?
10 “너희는 [a]그 포도밭을 헤치고 다니며 포도나무를 해치되 완전히 못 쓰도록 하지는 말고 그 가지만 꺾어 버려라. 그 가지는 나 여호와의 것이 아니다.
11 이스라엘과 유다 백성들이 나를 완전히 배반하였다. 나 여호와가 말한다.”
12 그들은 여호와를 인정하지 않고 이렇게 말하였다. “여호와는 아무것도 아니다. 어떤 불행도 우리에게 닥치지 않을 것이며 우리가 칼이나 기근을 보지 않을 것이다.
13 예언자들도 바람에 불과하다. 그들에게는 여호와의 말씀이 없으므로 그들이 예언한 바로 그 재앙이 그들 자신에게 미칠 것이다.”
14 그래서 전능하신 하나님 여호와께서 말씀하신다. “그들이 이런 말을 하였으므로 내가 네 입에 있는 내 말을 불이 되게 하고 이 백성들은 나무가 되게 할 것이니 그 불이 그들을 태워 버릴 것이다.
15 “이스라엘 백성들아, 내가 먼 곳에서 너희를 칠 나라를 불러들이겠다. 그 나라는 역사가 깊고 막강한 나라이다. 너희는 그 나라 말을 알지 못하고 그 언어를 이해하지 못할 것이다.
16 그들의 궁수병들은 무자비하게 죽이는 용감한 군인들이다.
17 그들은 너희가 추수한 농작물과 양식을 삼킬 것이며 너희 아들 딸들을 죽이고 또 너희 양떼와 소떼를 삼키며 너희 포도나무와 무화과나무를 해치고 너희가 의지하는 견고한 성들을 무너뜨릴 것이다.
18 그러나 그 때에도 내가 너희를 완전히 전멸시키지는 않을 것이다.
19 “그들이 만일 ‘우리 하나님 여호와께서는 어째서 우리에게 이 모든 일을 행하셨는가?’ 하고 물으면 너는 이렇게 대답하라. ‘너희가 여호와를 버리고 너희 땅에서 이방 신들을 섬겼으므로 이제는 너희가 너희 땅이 아닌 곳에서 이방인들을 섬겨야 할 것이다.’
20 “너는 유다와 이스라엘 백성에게 나 여호와의 말을 이렇게 선포하라:
21 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하는 미련하고 지각 없는 백성들아, 들어라.
22 어째서 너희는 나를 두려워하지 않느냐? 어째서 너희가 내 앞에서 떨지 않느냐? 내가 모래를 두어 바다의 한계를 정하고 그것으로 영원한 경계를 삼아 그 이상 넘지 못하게 하였으므로 아무리 바다가 넘실거리며 파도가 쳐도 그것을 넘지 못한다.
23 그러나 너희 백성들은 고집 세고 반역하는 마음이 있어서 나를 배반하고 돌아섰다.
24 내가 너희에게 때를 따라 가을비와 봄비를 내려 주고 추수하는 계절을 주었으나 너희는 나를 존중하거나 두려워하지 않았다.
25 그래서 너희는 너희 죄 때문에 내가 주는 좋은 복을 빼앗기고 말았다.
26 “내 백성들 가운데는 새를 잡기 위해 그물을 치는 사람처럼 사람을 잡기 위해 덫을 놓는 악인이 있다.
27 새장에 새가 가득하듯이 그들의 집에는 사기친 물건들이 가득하다. 그렇게 해서 그들은 세력 있는 부자가 되어
28 잘먹고 기름이 번질번질하다. 또 그들의 악한 행동에는 끝이 없어서 고아들의 소송 문제를 공정하게 처리해 주지 않으며 가난한 자들의 권리를 옹호하지 않는다.
29 내가 이런 일을 보고서도 어떻게 그들을 벌하지 않겠느냐? 이런 나라에 내가 보복하지 않겠느냐? 이것은 나 여호와의 말이다.
30 “이 땅에 무섭고 놀라운 일이 벌어지고 있다.
31 예언자들은 거짓된 것을 예언하며 제사장들은 [b]그 예언자들의 지시에 따라 다스리고 내 백성들은 그것을 좋게 여기고 있으니 그 결과는 뻔한 일이다.”

Sins Are Piled Sky-High
5 1-2 “Patrol Jerusalem’s streets.
Look around. Take note.
Search the market squares.
See if you can find one man, one woman,
A single soul who does what is right
and tries to live a true life.
I want to forgive that person.”
God’s Decree.
“But if all they do is say, ‘As sure as God lives . . . ’
they’re nothing but a bunch of liars.”
3-6 But you, God,
you have an eye for truth, don’t you?
You hit them hard, but it didn’t faze them.
You disciplined them, but they refused correction.
Hardheaded, harder than rock,
they wouldn’t change.
Then I said to myself, “Well, these are just poor people.
They don’t know any better.
They were never taught anything about God.
They never went to prayer meetings.
I’ll find some people from the best families.
I’ll talk to them.
They’ll know what’s going on, the way God works.
They’ll know the score.”
But they were no better! Rebels all!
Off doing their own thing.
The invaders are ready to pounce and kill,
like a mountain lion, a wilderness wolf,
Panthers on the prowl.
The streets aren’t safe anymore.
And why? Because the people’s sins are piled sky-high;
their betrayals are past counting.
7-9 “Why should I even bother with you any longer?
Your children wander off, leaving me,
Taking up with gods
that aren’t even gods.
I satisfied their deepest needs, and then they went off with the ‘sacred’ whores,
left me for orgies in sex shrines!
A bunch of well-groomed, lusty stallions,
each one pawing and snorting for his neighbor’s wife.
Do you think I’m going to stand around and do nothing?”
God’s Decree.
“Don’t you think I’ll take serious measures
against a people like this?
Eyes That Don’t Really Look, Ears That Don’t Really Listen
10-11 “Go down the rows of vineyards and rip out the vines,
but not all of them. Leave a few.
Prune back those vines!
That growth didn’t come from God!
They’ve betrayed me over and over again,
Judah and Israel both.”
God’s Decree.
12-13 “They’ve spread lies about God.
They’ve said, ‘There’s nothing to him.
Nothing bad will happen to us,
neither famine nor war will come our way.
The prophets are all windbags.
They speak nothing but nonsense.’”
14 Therefore, this is what God said to me, God-of-the-Angel-Armies:
“Because they have talked this way,
they are going to eat those words.
Watch now! I’m putting my words
as fire in your mouth.
And the people are a pile of kindling
ready to go up in flames.
15-17 “Attention! I’m bringing a far-off nation
against you, O house of Israel.”
God’s Decree.
“A solid nation,
an ancient nation,
A nation that speaks another language.
You won’t understand a word they say.
When they aim their arrows, you’re as good as dead.
They’re a nation of real fighters!
They’ll clean you out of house and home,
rob you of crops and children alike.
They’ll feast on your sheep and cattle,
strip your vines and fig trees.
And the fortresses that made you feel so safe—
leveled with a stroke of the sword!
18-19 “Even then, as bad as it will be”—God’s Decree!—“it will not be the end of the world for you. And when people ask, ‘Why did our God do all this to us?’ you must say to them, ‘This is back on you. Just as you left me and served foreign gods in your own country, so now you must serve foreigners in their own country.’
20-25 “Tell the house of Jacob this,
put out this bulletin in Judah:
Listen to this,
you scatterbrains, airheads,
With eyes that see but don’t really look,
and ears that hear but don’t really listen.
Why don’t you honor me?
Why aren’t you in awe before me?
Yes, me, who made the shorelines
to contain the ocean waters.
I drew a line in the sand
that cannot be crossed.
Waves roll in but cannot get through;
breakers crash but that’s the end of them.
But this people—what a people!
Uncontrollable, untamable runaways.
It never occurs to them to say,
‘How can we honor our God with our lives,
The God who gives rain in both spring and autumn
and maintains the rhythm of the seasons,
Who sets aside time each year for harvest
and keeps everything running smoothly for us?’
Of course you don’t! Your bad behavior blinds you to all this.
Your sins keep my blessings at a distance.
To Stand for Nothing and Stand Up for No One
26-29 “My people are infiltrated by wicked men,
unscrupulous men on the hunt.
They set traps for the unsuspecting.
Their victims are innocent men and women.
Their houses are stuffed with ill-gotten gain,
like a hunter’s bag full of birds.
Pretentious and powerful and rich,
hugely obese, oily with rolls of fat.
Worse, they have no conscience.
Right and wrong mean nothing to them.
They stand for nothing, stand up for no one,
throw orphans to the wolves, exploit the poor.
Do you think I’ll stand by and do nothing about this?”
God’s Decree.
“Don’t you think I’ll take serious measures
against a people like this?

30-31 “Unspeakable! Sickening!
What’s happened in this country?
Prophets preach lies
and priests hire on as their assistants.
And my people love it. They eat it up!
But what will you do when it’s time to pick up the pieces?”

Not One Is Upright
5 “Go up and down(A) the streets of Jerusalem,
look around and consider,(B)
search through her squares.
If you can find but one person(C)
who deals honestly(D) and seeks the truth,
I will forgive(E) this city.
2 Although they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(F)
still they are swearing falsely.(G)”
3 Lord, do not your eyes(H) look for truth?
You struck(I) them, but they felt no pain;
you crushed them, but they refused correction.(J)
They made their faces harder than stone(K)
and refused to repent.(L)
4 I thought, “These are only the poor;
they are foolish,(M)
for they do not know(N) the way of the Lord,
the requirements of their God.
5 So I will go to the leaders(O)
and speak to them;
surely they know the way of the Lord,
the requirements of their God.”
But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke
and torn off the bonds.(P)
6 Therefore a lion from the forest(Q) will attack them,
a wolf from the desert will ravage(R) them,
a leopard(S) will lie in wait near their towns
to tear to pieces any who venture out,
for their rebellion is great
and their backslidings many.(T)
7 “Why should I forgive you?
Your children have forsaken me
and sworn(U) by gods that are not gods.(V)
I supplied all their needs,
yet they committed adultery(W)
and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.(X)
8 They are well-fed, lusty stallions,
each neighing for another man’s wife.(Y)
9 Should I not punish them for this?”(Z)
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(AA) myself
on such a nation as this?
10 “Go through her vineyards and ravage them,
but do not destroy them completely.(AB)
Strip off her branches,
for these people do not belong to the Lord.
11 The people of Israel and the people of Judah
have been utterly unfaithful(AC) to me,”
declares the Lord.
12 They have lied(AD) about the Lord;
they said, “He will do nothing!
No harm will come to us;(AE)
we will never see sword or famine.(AF)
13 The prophets(AG) are but wind(AH)
and the word is not in them;
so let what they say be done to them.”
14 Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says:
“Because the people have spoken these words,
I will make my words in your mouth(AI) a fire(AJ)
and these people the wood it consumes.(AK)
15 People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
“I am bringing a distant nation(AL) against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
a people whose language(AM) you do not know,
whose speech you do not understand.
16 Their quivers(AN) are like an open grave;
all of them are mighty warriors.
17 They will devour(AO) your harvests and food,
devour(AP) your sons and daughters;
they will devour(AQ) your flocks and herds,
devour your vines and fig trees.(AR)
With the sword(AS) they will destroy
the fortified cities(AT) in which you trust.(AU)
18 “Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not destroy(AV) you completely. 19 And when the people ask,(AW) ‘Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?’ you will tell them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods(AX) in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners(AY) in a land not your own.’
20 “Announce this to the descendants of Jacob
and proclaim(AZ) it in Judah:
21 Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,(BA)
who have eyes(BB) but do not see,
who have ears but do not hear:(BC)
22 Should you not fear(BD) me?” declares the Lord.
“Should you not tremble(BE) in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea,(BF)
an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;
they may roar,(BG) but they cannot cross it.
23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious(BH) hearts;
they have turned aside(BI) and gone away.
24 They do not say to themselves,
‘Let us fear(BJ) the Lord our God,
who gives autumn and spring rains(BK) in season,
who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’(BL)
25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away;
your sins have deprived you of good.(BM)
26 “Among my people are the wicked(BN)
who lie in wait(BO) like men who snare birds
and like those who set traps(BP) to catch people.
27 Like cages full of birds,
their houses are full of deceit;(BQ)
they have become rich(BR) and powerful
28 and have grown fat(BS) and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case of the fatherless;(BT)
they do not defend the just cause of the poor.(BU)
29 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(BV) myself
on such a nation as this?
