19 유다 왕 여호사밧이 예루살렘의 자기 궁전으로 무사히 돌아오자
2 하나니의 아들인 예언자 예후가 나가서 그를 맞으며 이렇게 말 하였다. “왕은 악한 자를 돕고 여호와를 미워하는 자를 사랑하는 것이 옳다고 생각하십니까? 왕이 행하신 그 일 때문에 여호와께서는 왕에 대한 분노를 금치 못하고 있습니다.
3 그러나 왕에게는 선한 일도 있는데 이것은 왕이 이 땅에서 아세라 여신상을 없애고 하나님을 진심으로 찾으려고 했던 점입니다.”
여호사밧의 개혁
4 그래서 여호사밧은 그 후로 두 번 다시 이스라엘을 방문하지 않고 예루살렘에 조용히 머물러 있었다. 후에 그는 브엘세바에서부터 에브라임 산간 지대까지 순회하면서 백성들을 권면하여 그들 조상의 하나님 여호와께 돌아오게 하였다.
5 그는 또 재판관들을 임명하여 유다의 전 요새 성에 배치하고
6 그들에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “여러분은 모든 일을 조심스럽게 처리하십시오. 여러분의 재판은 사람을 위한 것이 아니라 여호와를 위한 것입니다. 여러분이 판결을 내릴 때 여호와께서 여러분과 함께하실 것입니다.
7 그러므로 여러분은 여호와를 두려워하는 마음으로 신중하게 재판하십시오. 우리 하나님 여호와께서는 부정하고 공정치 못한 재판이나 뇌물받는 일을 용납하지 않으십니다.”
8 그리고 여호사밧은 예루살렘에도 법정을 마련하고 레위 사람들과 제사장들과 족장들을 법관으로 임명하여 예루살렘 주민들의 모든 소송 문제를 처리하게 하고
9 그들에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “여러분은 여호와를 두려워하는 마음과 성실하고 진실한 마음으로 이 일을 수행해 나가야 합니다.
10 만일 어떤 성에 사는 여러분의 동족이 살인 사건이나 그 밖에 율법과 어떤 규정을 어긴 문제로 법정에 나오면 여러분은 그들에게 경고하여 여호와께 범죄하는 일이 없도록 하십시오. 그렇지 않으면 여러분과 여러분의 동족이 다 같이 여호와의 노여우심을 사게 될 것입니다. 그러나 이 일을 잘 수행하면 여러분에게는 아무 죄가 없을 것입니다.
11 그리고 여호와께 관한 일체의 종교 문제는 대제사장 아마랴가 최종 결정을 내리고 [a]민사 문제의 최종 결정권은 유다 지파의 지도자인 이스마엘의 아들 스바댜가 가지게 될 것이며 레위 사람들은 여러분의 업무를 도와주는 사무관이 될 것입니다. 여러분은 과감하게 이 일을 수행하십시오. 여호와께서 정직한 자와 함께하시기를 바랍니다.”

19 Then Jehoshaphat returned safely to his house in Jerusalem. 2 When he arrived, Jehu (the son of Hanani the seer whom Asa imprisoned for predicting wars against Judah) greeted the king.
Jehu: Should you aid the wicked and align yourself with those who hate the Eternal? If you do, you will bring the wrath of the Eternal upon yourself. 3 In spite of helping God’s enemies, there is still some good in you—you did remove the Asherah idols from Judah and seek the True God.
4 Unlike his father Asa, Jehoshaphat did not punish the seer for his message. Instead, the king dedicated himself to drawing his nation closer to the Eternal One, the True God of their ancestors. He lived in Jerusalem, but he traveled among his people from Beersheba in the South to the hill country of Ephraim in the North. 5 Jehoshaphat, whose name means “the Lord judges,” appointed judges throughout the land—in the fortified cities of Judah, one at a time.
Jehoshaphat (to the judges): 6 When you are rendering your judgments, consider them carefully. When you judge, you are representing the Eternal, who is with you when you render a verdict, not man or any institution. 7 Be guided by your fear of Him. Act carefully because the Eternal One, our True God, is never associated with unrighteousness, partiality, or bribery.
8 In Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat appointed judges from three specific groups: the Levites, the priests, and the tribal leaders of Israel. They enacted the Eternal’s judgments and presided over the daily disputes among the citizens of Jerusalem.
Jehoshaphat (commissioning his judges): 9 You will faithfully and wholeheartedly perform these duties in the fear of the Eternal: 10 instruct your brothers about the various laws (so they and you will be innocent before the Eternal and all of you will avoid His anger) whenever any city dweller brings you subjective cases where the right decisions are not apparent, cases where you must choose who is justified in bloodshed or how to interpret the laws and commandments. 11 Amariah, the chief priest, will be in charge of all that pertains to the Eternal; Zebadiah, the son of Ishmael and leader of the Judahites, will be in charge of all that pertains to governance; and the Levites will be your officers. If you act decisively, then the Eternal is a part of your good actions.

2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord.
3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.
4 And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beersheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the Lord God of their fathers.
5 And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city,
6 And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment.
7 Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
8 Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.
9 And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in your cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the Lord, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.
11 And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the Lord; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king's matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and the Lord shall be with the good.

19 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2 Jehu(A) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, “Should you help the wicked(B) and love[a] those who hate the Lord?(C) Because of this, the wrath(D) of the Lord is on you. 3 There is, however, some good(E) in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles(F) and have set your heart on seeking God.(G)”
Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges
4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 5 He appointed judges(H) in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. 6 He told them, “Consider carefully what you do,(I) because you are not judging for mere mortals(J) but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7 Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice(K) or partiality(L) or bribery.”
8 In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites,(M) priests(N) and heads of Israelite families to administer(O) the law of the Lord and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem. 9 He gave them these orders: “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord. 10 In every case that comes before you from your people who live in the cities—whether bloodshed or other concerns of the law, commands, decrees or regulations—you are to warn them not to sin against the Lord;(P) otherwise his wrath will come on you and your people. Do this, and you will not sin.
11 “Amariah the chief priest will be over you in any matter concerning the Lord, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in any matter concerning the king, and the Levites will serve as officials before you. Act with courage,(Q) and may the Lord be with those who do well.”
