르호보암이 어리석은 짓을 하다
(왕상 12:1-20)
10 르호보암이 세겜으로 갔다. 이스라엘의 모든 사람이 그를 왕으로 삼으려고 그곳에 모여 있었기 때문이다. 2 느밧의 아들 여로보암은 솔로몬 왕을 피해 그때까지 이집트에 있다가 이 소식을 듣고 이집트에서 돌아왔다. 3 그리하여 사람들이 여로보암을 불러냈다. 그는 온 이스라엘 회중과 함께 르호보암에게 가서 이렇게 말하였다. 4 “임금님의 아버님께서는 우리에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨습니다. 이제 임금님께서는 아버님이 우리에게 지우신 힘겨운 일과 무거운 멍에를 가볍게 해 주십시오. 그러면 우리가 임금님을 섬기겠습니다.”
5 르호보암이 말하였다. “돌아갔다가 사흘 뒤에 다시 오시오.” 그러자 백성들이 돌아갔다.
6 그런 다음 르호보암 왕은 자기 아버지 솔로몬이 살아 있을 때에 그를 섬긴 장로들의 의견을 물었다. “내가 이 백성에게 어떻게 대답하면 좋겠다고 생각하십니까?”
7 그들이 대답하였다. “오늘 임금님께서 이 백성의 종이 되셔서 그들을 섬기며, 그들에게 좋은 말로 대답해 주시면, 그들이 언제까지나 임금님의 종이 될 것입니다.”
8 그러나 르호보암은 장로들의 충고를 거부하고 자기와 함께 자라서 자기를 섬기는 젊은 사람들과 의논하였다. 9 그가 그들에게 물었다. “이 백성이 나에게 ‘임금님의 아버님께서 우리에게 지운 멍에를 가볍게 해 주십시오.’ 하니 내가 그들에게 무어라고 대답해야겠소? 그대들의 의견은 무엇이오?”
10 그와 함께 자란 젊은 사람들이 대답하였다. “임금님께 와서 ‘왕의 아버님께서는 우리에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨으니, 임금님께서 이제 우리의 멍에를 가볍게 해 주십시오.’ 하고 말한 백성들에게 이렇게 말씀하십시오. ‘내 새끼손가락 하나가 나의 아버지의 허리보다 굵다. 11 내 아버지께서 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨으나, 나는 그 멍에를 더욱 무겁게 하겠다. 나의 아버지께서는 너희를 가죽 채찍으로 치셨으나, 나는 너희를 쇠 채찍으로 치겠다.’”
12 왕이 “사흘 뒤에 다시 오너라.” 하였으므로 사흘이 지난 다음에 여로보암과 모든 백성이 르호보암에게 다시 왔다. 13 왕은 백성에게 거칠게 대답하였다. 그는 장로들의 충고를 무시하고 14 젊은 사람들의 충고에 따라 이렇게 대답하였다. “내 아버지께서 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨으나, 나는 그 멍에를 더욱 무겁게 하겠다. 나의 아버지께서는 너희를 가죽 채찍으로 치셨으나, 나는 너희를 쇠 채찍으로 치겠다.” 15 왕은 이처럼 백성의 요구를 들어주지 않았다. 일이 이렇게 꼬이게 된 것은 주께서 뜻하신 대로 된 것이다. 주께서는 이렇게 하여 실로 사람 아히야를 시켜 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 하신 말씀이 이루어지게 하셨다.
16 온 이스라엘은 왕이 자기들의 요구를 들어주지 않는 것을 보고 왕에게 대답하였다.
“우리가 다윗에게서 받을 몫이 무엇이며
이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산이 무엇인가?
오, 이스라엘아, 각기 집으로 돌아가거라.
오, 다윗아, 너는 네 집안이나 돌보라.”
이렇게 하여 이스라엘 백성은 각기 자기 집으로 돌아갔다. 17 그러나 유다의 여러 성읍에 살고 있는 이스라엘 자손은 여전히 르호보암이 다스렸다.
18 르호보암 왕이 강제노역의 감독관인 아도람[a]을 이스라엘 백성에게 보냈으나 그들이 그를 돌로 쳐죽였다. 르호보암 왕은 자기의 전차를 타고 간신히 예루살렘으로 도망할 수 있었다. 19 이렇게 이스라엘은 다윗 집안에 반역하여 오늘까지 이른다.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
10 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam(B) son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel(D) went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us,(E) but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(F) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer,(G) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(H) the advice the elders(I) gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God,(J) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.(K)
16 When all Israel(L) saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,(M)
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!
Look after your own house, David!”
So all the Israelites went home. 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[a](N) who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

10 Und Rehabeam zog nach Sichem; denn ganz Israel war nach Sichem gekommen, ihn zum König zu machen.
2 Als aber Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, der in Ägypten war, wohin er sich vor dem König Salomo geflüchtet hatte, solches vernahm, kehrte er aus Ägypten zurück. 3 Da sandten sie hin und ließen ihn rufen. Und Jerobeam kam mit ganz Israel, und sie redeten mit Rehabeam und sprachen: 4 Dein Vater hat unser Joch zu hart gemacht; erleichtere nun du den harten Dienst deines Vaters und das schwere Joch, das er uns auferlegt hat, so wollen wir dir untertan sein! 5 Er sprach zu ihnen: Kommt in drei Tagen wieder zu mir! Und das Volk ging hin.
6 Da beriet sich der König Rehabeam mit den Ältesten, die vor seinem Vater Salomo zu dessen Lebzeiten gestanden hatten, und sprach: Wie ratet ihr, daß man diesem Volk antworten soll? 7 Sie sagten zu ihm und sprachen: Wirst du gegen dieses Volk freundlich und ihm gefällig sein und ihnen gute Worte geben, so werden sie dir allezeit dienen! 8 Aber er verließ den Rat der Ältesten, den sie ihm gegeben hatten, und beriet sich mit den Jungen, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren und vor ihm standen. 9 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was ratet ihr, daß wir diesem Volk antworten, das zu mir gesagt hat: Erleichtere das Joch, das dein Vater uns auferlegt hat?
10 Da sprachen die Jungen, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren: Dem Volk, das zu dir gesagt hat: „Dein Vater hat unser Joch zu schwer gemacht; mache du unser Joch leichter“ - dem antworte du: Mein kleiner Finger soll dicker sein, als meines Vaters Lenden! 11 Hat euch mein Vater ein schweres Joch aufgeladen, so will ich euch noch mehr aufladen! Hat mein Vater euch mit Geißeln gezüchtigt, so will ich euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen!
12 Als nun am dritten Tage Jerobeam und alles Volk zu Rehabeam kamen, wie der König gesagt hatte: „Kommt wieder zu mir am dritten Tag“, 13 da antwortete ihnen der König hart. Denn der König Rehabeam verließ den Rat der Ältesten 14 und redete mit ihnen nach dem Rat der Jungen und sprach: Hat mein Vater euer Joch schwer gemacht, so will ich es noch schwerer machen! Hat mein Vater euch mit Geißeln gezüchtigt, so will ich euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen! 15 Also willfahrte der König dem Volke nicht; denn es ward also von Gott gefügt, damit der Herr sein Wort bekräftige, das er durch Achija von Silo zu Jerobeam, dem Sohn Nebats, geredet hatte.
16 Als aber ganz Israel sah, daß der König ihnen nicht willfahrte, antwortete das Volk dem König und sprach:
Was haben wir für Anteil an David? Wir haben nichts zu erben vom Sohne Isais! In seine eigene Hütte gehe, wer zu Israel gehört! Du, David, magst selbst zu deinem Hause sehen!
Und ganz Israel ging in seine Hütten; 17 so daß Rehabeam nur über die Kinder Israel regierte, die in den Städten Judas wohnten.
18 Und als der König Rehabeam den Fronmeister Hadoram hinsandte, warfen ihn die Kinder Israel mit Steinen zu Tode. Der König Rehabeam aber sprang eilends auf seinen Wagen, um nach Jerusalem zu entfliehen. 19 Also fiel Israel ab vom Hause Davids bis auf diesen Tag.

2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3 And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9 And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14 And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the Lord might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
