10 예루살렘의 왕 아도니세덱은, 여호수아가 여리고와 그 왕에게 하였던 것처럼, 아이 성을 쳐부수고 그 성과 왕을 전멸시켰다는 소식을 들었다. 또한 그는 기브온 사람들이 이스라엘과 평화 조약을 맺고 그들과 함께 살고 있다는 이야기도 들었다. 2 이 소식을 들은 아도니세덱과 예루살렘 사람들은 몹시 두려웠다. 기브온은 왕이 있는 도성처럼 큰 성읍으로 아이 성보다 더 큰 성이었다. 그리고 기브온 사람들은 모두 용감한 전사들이었다. 따라서 예루살렘 사람들은 두려워 떨지 않을 수 없었다.
3 그리하여 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱은 헤브론 왕 호함과 야르뭇 왕 비람과 라기스 왕 야비아와 에글론 왕 드빌에게 다음과 같은 전갈을 보냈다. 4 “기브온이 여호수아와 이스라엘 백성과 평화 조약을 맺었습니다. 그러니 올라와서 내가 기브온을 공격하는 것을 도와주십시오.”
5 아모리 부족의 다섯 왕들인 예루살렘과 헤브론과 야르뭇과 라기스와 에글론의 왕들은 연합군을 편성한 다음, 모든 군사를 이끌고 올라와 기브온을 공격하려고 진을 쳤다.
6 기브온 사람들은 길갈의 진에 머물고 있는 여호수아에게 급히 소식을 전하였다. “어르신의 종들을 버리지 말아 주십시오. 속히 오셔서 우리를 구해 주십시오. 산간지방에 사는 아모리 왕들이 우리를 치려고 연합군을 이끌고 왔으니 우리를 도와주십시오.”
7 그리하여 여호수아는 전군을 이끌고 길갈을 떠나 그리로 올라갔다. 가장 용맹한 군인들도 그와 같이 올라갔다. 8 주께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 적군을 두려워하지 말아라. 내가 이미 그들을 네 손에 넘겨주었다. 그들 가운데 단 한 사람도 너를 당해 내지 못 할 것이다.”
9 길갈을 떠나 밤새 걸어서 기브온으로 올라간 여호수아는 적군을 기습하였다. 10 주께서 이스라엘 앞에서 적군을 혼란에 빠지게 하시니 이스라엘은 그들을 무찌르고 기브온에서 큰 승리를 거두었다. 이스라엘은 기브온에서 벳호론으로 올라가는 길로 도망치는 적군을 뒤 쫓았다. 그리고 아세가와 막게다까지 쫓아가서 그들을 무찔렀다. 11 적군은 이스라엘에게 쫓겨 벳호론에서 아세가 쪽으로 도망쳤다. 그때에 주께서 하늘에서 그들에게 큰 우박을 퍼부으셨다. 그리하여 이스라엘 군사의 칼에 맞아 죽은 사람보다 이 우박에 맞아 죽은 사람이 더 많았다.
12 주께서 이스라엘에게 아모리 사람을 넘겨주신 그날에, 여호수아가 이스라엘 앞에서 주께 외쳤다.
“오, 태양아, 기브온 위에 가만히 서 있어라.
오, 달아, 아얄론 골짜기 위에 가만히 서 있어라.”
13 이 사건을 두고 야살의 책[a]에는 이렇게 기록되어 있다.
“그리하여 백성이 원수들과 싸워 이길 때까지
태양이 가만히 서 있었고 달이 멈추어 섰다.”
해가 하늘 한가운데에 멈추어 서서 거의 하루 종일 내려가지 않았다. 14 주께서 사람의 말을 들어주셔서 이와 같이 된 날은 전에도 없었고 그 뒤로도 없었다. 정말로 주께서 이스라엘을 위해 싸워 주셨다.
15 여호수아는 온 이스라엘과 함께 길갈에 있는 진으로 돌아왔다. 16 그런데 아모리의 다섯 왕은 도망하여 막게다에 있는 굴에 숨어 있었다. 17 여호수아는 그 다섯 왕이 막게다에 있는 굴에 숨은 것이 발견되었다는 보고를 받고 18 이렇게 말하였다. “큰 바위들을 굴려 그 굴의 어귀를 막고 몇 사람을 세워 잘 지키게 하여라. 19 그러나 너희는 멈추지 말고 적의 뒤를 쫓아라. 뒤쪽에서 공격하여 그들이 성으로 돌아가지 못하게 하여라. 주 너희 하나님께서 그들을 너희 손에 붙이셨다.”
20 그리하여 여호수아와 이스라엘 사람들은 적을 전멸시켰다. 적 가운데서 살아남은 몇 사람만이 요새 성읍으로 도망쳐 목숨을 건질 수 있었다. 21 이스라엘 전군은 막게다 진에 있는 여호수아에게 무사히 돌아왔다. 어느 누구도 이스라엘 사람들을 대적하여 말하는 사람이 없었다.
22 여호수아가 말하였다. “동굴 어귀를 열고 그 다섯 왕을 내게로 끌어오너라.” 23 그리하여 그들이 다섯 왕을 동굴에서 끌어냈다. 그 다섯 왕은 예루살렘과 헤브론과 야르뭇과 라기스와 에글론의 왕들이었다. 24 그들이 이 다섯 왕을 여호수아에게 끌어오니 여호수아가 이스라엘의 모든 군인을 불러 모았다. 그리고 그와 함께 전투에 나갔던 지휘관들에게 말하였다. “이리 와서 너희 발로 이 왕들의 목을 밟아라[b].” 그러자 지휘관들이 앞으로 나와 그들의 발로 왕들의 목을 밟았다.
25 여호수아가 그들에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 말아라. 용기를 잃지 말아라. 굳세고 용감하여라. 너희가 맞서 싸울 모든 원수에게 주께서 이렇게 하실 것이다.”
26 그런 다음 여호수아는 그들을 죽여 다섯 그루의 나무에 매달았다. 그들의 주검은 저녁때까지 나무에 달려 있었다. 27 해가 질 무렵에 여호수아의 명령을 받고, 사람들이 그 주검들을 나무에서 끌어내려, 그들이 숨어 있던 굴에 던지고 큰 바위들로 굴 어귀를 막았다. 그 바위들이 오늘날까지 거기에 있다.
28 그날에 여호수아는 막게다 성을 점령하였다. 그는 그 성과 왕을 칼로 무찌르고 성에 있던 모든 사람을 전멸시켰다. 그는 단 한 사람도 남겨 두지 않았다. 그리고 막게다 성의 왕에게도 여리고 성의 왕에게 한 것과 꼭 같이 하였다.

Gibeonites under attack
10 Jerusalem’s King Adoni-zedek heard that Joshua had captured Ai and had wiped it out as something reserved for God. Joshua did the same thing to Ai and its king that he had done to Jericho and its king. He also heard that the population of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living among them. 2 Adoni-zedek and his people[a] were very afraid, because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai. All its men were soldiers. 3 So Jerusalem’s King Adoni-zedek sent word to Hebron’s King Hoham, Jarmuth’s King Piram, Lachish’s King Japhia, and Eglon’s King Debir: 4 “Come up and help me. We will strike at Gibeon, because it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites.” 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites gathered. These were the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon. They went up with all their armies, camped against Gibeon, and attacked it. 6 The people of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Don’t desert your servants! Come to us quickly. Rescue us! Help us! All the Amorite kings from the highlands have assembled together against us.” 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal with the entire army and all the bravest soldiers.
The Lord fights for Israel
8 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid of them. I have given them into your power. Not a single one of them can stand up against you.” 9 Joshua quickly attacked them, having come up overnight from Gilgal. 10 Then the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel. Joshua struck a mighty blow against them at Gibeon. He chased them on the way up to Beth-horon and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 When they were fleeing from Israel and were on the slope of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from the sky all the way to Azekah. So they died. More died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites into the power of Israel, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the presence of the Israelites:
“Sun, stand still at Gibeon!
and Moon, at the Aijalon Valley!”
13 The sun stood still and the moon stood motionless
until a nation took revenge on its enemies.
Isn’t this written in the Jashar scroll? So the sun stood motionless in the middle of the sky. For a whole day, it was in no hurry to go down. 14 There hasn’t been a day like it before or since, when the Lord responded to a human voice. The Lord fought for Israel. 15 Then Joshua along with all Israel came back to the camp at Gilgal.
Israel executes five kings
16 Then those five kings fled and hid in the cave at Makkedah. 17 It was reported to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 Joshua said, “Roll large stones over the mouth of the cave. Station some men by it to guard them, 19 but don’t you stay there. Chase after your enemies and attack them from the rear. Don’t let them enter their cities, because the Lord your God has given them into your power.” 20 Joshua and the Israelites finished dealing them a stunning blow until they were finished off. Some survivors among them escaped into the fortified cities. 21 Then the whole people came back safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. Not a single person threatened the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open up the mouth of the cave. Bring those five kings out of the cave to me.” 23 They did so. They brought the five kings out of the cave to him: the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon. 24 When they brought these kings out to Joshua, Joshua called for every Israelite. He said to the military commanders who had gone out with him, “Come forward. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they went forward and put their feet on their necks. 25 Then Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid or terrified. Be brave and strong, because this is how the Lord will deal with all the enemies you fight.” 26 Next, Joshua struck them down. He put them to death and then hanged them on five trees. They were hanging on the trees until evening. 27 At sundown, Joshua gave an order, and they took them down from the trees. They threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones over the mouth of the cave. The stones are still there to this very day.
Victories in the south
28 On that day, Joshua captured Makkedah. With a sword, he struck it and its king without mercy. He wiped them out, treating everyone in the city as something reserved for God. He left no survivors. He did to the king of Makkedah exactly as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua along with all Israel moved on from Makkedah to Libnah. They attacked Libnah. 30 The Lord also gave it and its king into the power of Israel. With a sword, he struck it and everyone in it without mercy. He left no survivors in it. He did to its king exactly as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Joshua along with all Israel moved on from Libnah to Lachish. They camped near it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into the power of Israel. Joshua captured it on the second day. With a sword, he struck it and everyone in it without mercy, just exactly as he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Gezer’s King Horam came up to help Lachish. But Joshua struck him and his people down, until no survivors were left.
34 Joshua along with all Israel moved on from Lachish to Eglon. They camped against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it on the same day and struck it down without mercy. On that day, he wiped out everyone in it as something reserved for God, just exactly as he had done to Lachish.
36 Joshua along with all Israel went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it. 37 They captured it and struck it down without mercy, along with its king, all its towns, and everyone in it. He left no survivors, just exactly as he had done to Eglon. He wiped out the city and everyone in it as something reserved for God.
38 Joshua along with all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it. 39 He captured it along with its king and all its cities. They struck them down without mercy and wiped out everyone in it as something reserved for God. He left no survivors. Exactly as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king—exactly as he had done to Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua struck at the whole land: the highlands, the arid southern plains, the lowlands, the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivors. He wiped out everything that breathed as something reserved for God, exactly as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded. 41 Joshua struck them down from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the whole land of Goshen as far as Gibeon. 42 Joshua captured all these kings and their land all at the same time. This was because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua along with all Israel came back to the camp at Gilgal.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)
