압살롬의 죽음
18 다윗은함께온백성들을한자 리에 모으고 100명과 1,000명 을 단위로 부대를 편성하여 각 부대의 지휘관을 임명하고
2 3분의 1은 스루야의 아들 요압에게, 3 분의 1은 그의 동생 아비새에게, 나머 3분 1은가드사람잇대에게맡 기고 그들에게 말하였다. “나도 너희 와 함께 출전하겠다.”
3 그러나 그들은 이렇게 말하였다. “왕 은우리와함께출전해서는안됩니 다. 만일우리가도망하거나우리중 에 절반이 죽는다고 해도 적은 우리에 게 관심이 없을 것입니다. [a]그들의 관 심은오직왕을찾아해치는데있습 니다. 왕은우리만명보다더소중한 분이십니다. 그러므로 왕은 성에 남아 계시다가 우리가 어려울 때 도와주시 는 것이 더 나을 것 같습니다.”
4 그러자왕은 “너희에게좋을대로하 겠다” 하고 대답하였다. 왕이 성문 곁 에 서자 모든 군대는 부대별로 그의 앞 을지나가기시작하였다.
5 왕은 요압과 아비새와 잇대에게 “나를 생각해서도어린압살롬을너그럽게 대하여라” 하고 부탁하였다. 이때 모 든 병사들도 다윗이 말하는 소리를 다 들었다.
6 다윗의군대가들로나가자에브라임 숲속에서 이스라엘군과 전투가 벌어 졌다.
7 거기서 이스라엘군은 대패하여 그 날 20,000명이 전사했는데
8 그전투는그지역일대에전면전으로 번져칼에죽은자보다숲에서죽은 자들이 더 많았다.
9 압살롬은전투중에다윗의부하들과 마주치자 노새를 타고 도망하기 시작 하였다. 그러나가지가무성한큰상 수리나무아래로노새가지나갈때압 살롬의 머리가 그 나뭇가지에 걸려 노 새는 그냥 달아나고 그는 공중에 대롱 대롱 매달렸다.
10 이때다윗의부하중한사람이그것을 보고 요압에게 보고하였다. “압살롬이 상수리나무에 매달려 있는 것을 보았 습니다.”
11 “뭣이? 네가 그를 보았다고? 그렇다면 어째서 그를 당장 죽이지 않았느냐? 네가 만일 그를 죽였더라면 내가 너에 게 상금으로 은화 10개를 주고 [b]일 계 급 특진과 함께 훈장을 달아 주었을 것이다.”
12 “나에게은 1,000개를준다고해도 나는그렇게할수없습니다. 우리는 왕이 장군과 아비새와 잇대에게 ‘나를 생각해서도 어린 압살롬을 해하지 말 라’ 고 명령하는 소리를 들었습니다.
13 내가만일왕의명령을거역하고압살 롬을 죽였다면 왕은 분명히 누가 그랬 는지 밝혀낼 것이며 아마 장군께서도 나를 변호하지 않을 것입니다.”
14 “나는더이상너와시간을허비하지 않겠다.” 그러고서 그는 단창 세 개를 가지고 가서 나뭇가지에 매달린 채 아 직 살아 있는 압살롬의 심장을 찔렀 다.
15 그러자요압의부 10명이압살롬을 에워싸고 그를 쳐서 완전히 죽여 버렸 다.
16 그리고요압이나팔을불자그의부하 들은 이스라엘군을 더 이상 추격하지 않고 돌아와
17 압살롬의시체를숲속의깊은구덩이 에던져넣고그위에돌무더기를쌓 았다. 한편 이스라엘군은 다 자기들 집으로 도망치고 말았다.
18 압살롬은살아있을때자기이름을전 할 아들이 없었기 때문에 “왕의 골짜 기” 라는 곳에 자기 기념비를 세웠다. 그리고 그는 그 기념비를 자기 이름을 따서 ‘압살롬의 기념비’ 라고 지었는 데 그것은 오늘날까지도 그렇게 불려 지고 있다.
압살롬의사망소식과다윗의슬픔
19 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 요압에게 “내가 달려가 여호와께서 왕의 원수를 갚아 주신 소식을 전하겠습니다” 하자
20 요압이 “지금은 안 된다. 왕의 아들이 죽었다는것은왕에게도좋은소식이 못된다. 너는다른날에그소식을전 하여라” 하였다.
21 그러고서 요압이 어떤 구스 사람에게 “네가 가서 왕에게 본 것을 전하여라” 하자그는요압에게절을하고달려갔 다.
22 그때 아히마아스가 요압에게 말하였 다. “나도 가게 해 주십시오.” “네가 무 엇때문에가려고하느냐? 네가이소 식을전한다고해도상을받지못할 것이다.”
23 “어쨌든 나를 좀 보내 주십시오.” “그 게 소원이라면 가거라.” 그러자 아히 마아스는 지름길로 들을 지나 구스 사 람을 앞질러 갔다.
24 그때다윗은두성문사이에앉아있었 다. 파수병이 성문 관망대로 올라가서 보니 어떤 사람이 혼자서 달려오고 있 었다.
25 그가 소리쳐서 그 사실을 다윗에게 알 리자 왕은 “그가 혼자 오면 좋은 소식 을 가져오는 것이 분명하다” 하였다. 그가 점점 가까이 오고 있을 때
26 파수병은 또 한 사람이 달려오는 것을 보고 문지기에게 외쳤다. “또 한 사람 이달려오고있다!” 그러자왕은 “저도 좋은 소식을 가져오는 자이다” 하였 다.
27 이때그파수병이 “먼저오는자가사 독의 아들 아히마아스같이 보입니다” 하자 왕은 “그가 좋은 사람이니 좋은 소식을 가져올 것이다” 하고 말하였 다.
28 그때아히마아스가도착하여왕에게 인사하고 땅에 엎드려 이렇게 말하였 다. “왕의 하나님 여호와를 찬양합니 다. 여호와께서는 왕을 대적하는 반역 자들을 없애 버렸습니다.”
29 “어린압살롬은어떻게되었느냐? 그 는 무사하냐?” “요압 장군이 나를 보 낼 때 크게 떠들어대는 소리가 있었으 나 무슨 일이었는지 모르겠습니다.”
30 “너는물러서있거라.” 그래서그는물 러나 곁에 서 있었다.
31 바로 그때 구스 사람이 도착하여 왕에 게 말하였다. “대왕께 전할 좋은 소식 이 있습니다. 오늘 여호와께서 왕을 대적하는 모든 반역자들에게 왕의 원 수를 갚으셨습니다.”
32 “어린압살롬은어떻게되었느냐? 그 는 무사하냐?” “왕의 모든 원수들이 그 청년과 같이 되기를 바랍니다.”
33 그러자 왕은 가슴을 찢는 듯한 슬픔에 못이겨성문위에있는누각으로올 라가서 울며 부르짖었다. “내 아들 압 살롬아, 내 아들 내 아들 압살롬아, 내 가 너를 대신해서 죽었더라면 좋았을 걸! 아이고 압살롬, 내 아들아 내 아들 아.”

Absalom’s Defeat and Death
18 And David [a]numbered the people who were with him, and (A)set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 2 Then David sent out one third of the people under the hand of Joab, (B)one third under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the hand of (C)Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, “I also will surely go out with you myself.”
3 (D)But the people answered, “You shall not go out! For if we flee away, they will not care about us; nor if half of us die, will they care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us now. For you are now more help to us in the city.”
4 Then the king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands. 5 Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” (E)And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains orders concerning Absalom.
6 So the people went out into the field of battle against Israel. And the battle was in the (F)woods of Ephraim. 7 The people of Israel were overthrown there before the servants of David, and a great slaughter of twenty thousand took place there that day. 8 For the battle there was scattered over the face of the whole countryside, and the woods devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 Then Absalom met the servants of David. Absalom rode on a mule. The mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth tree, and (G)his head caught in the terebinth; so he was left hanging between heaven and earth. And the mule which was under him went on. 10 Now a certain man saw it and told Joab, and said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth tree!”
11 So Joab said to the man who told him, “You just saw him! And why did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a belt.”
12 But the man said to Joab, “Though I were to receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king’s son. (H)For in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, [b]‘Beware lest anyone touch the young man Absalom!’ 13 Otherwise I would have dealt falsely against my own life. For there is nothing hidden from the king, and you yourself would have set yourself against me.”
14 Then Joab said, “I cannot linger with you.” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart, while he was still alive in the midst of the terebinth tree. 15 And ten young men who bore Joab’s armor surrounded Absalom, and struck and killed him.
16 So Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel. For Joab held back the people. 17 And they took Absalom and cast him into a large pit in the woods, and (I)laid a very large heap of stones over him. Then all Israel (J)fled, everyone to his tent.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up a [c]pillar for himself, which is in (K)the King’s Valley. For he said, (L)“I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name. And to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument.
David Hears of Absalom’s Death
19 Then (M)Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me run now and take the news to the king, how the Lord has [d]avenged him of his enemies.”
20 And Joab said to him, “You shall not take the news this day, for you shall take the news another day. But today you shall take no news, because the king’s son is dead.” 21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” So the Cushite bowed himself to Joab and ran.
22 And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, “But [e]whatever happens, please let me also run after the Cushite.”
So Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, since you have no news ready?”
23 “But whatever happens,” he said, “let me run.”
So he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain, and outran the Cushite.
24 Now David was sitting between the (N)two gates. And the watchman went up to the roof over the gate, to the wall, lifted his eyes and looked, and there was a man, running alone. 25 Then the watchman cried out and told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” And he came rapidly and drew near.
26 Then the watchman saw another man running, and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “There is another man, running alone!”
And the king said, “He also brings news.”
27 So the watchman said, [f]“I think the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.”
And the king said, “He is a good man, and comes with (O)good news.”
28 So Ahimaaz called out and said to the king, [g]“All is well!” Then he bowed down with his face to the earth before the king, and said, (P)“Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king!”
29 The king said, “Is the young man Absalom safe?”
Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant and me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I did not know what it was about.”
30 And the king said, “Turn aside and stand here.” So he turned aside and stood still.
31 Just then the Cushite came, and the Cushite said, “There is good news, my lord the king! For the Lord has avenged you this day of all those who rose against you.”
32 And the king said to the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom safe?”
So the Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise against you to do harm, be like that young man!”
David’s Mourning for Absalom
33 Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: (Q)“O my son Absalom—my son, my son Absalom—if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, (R)my son!”
