心里的污秽

10 耶稣就叫了众人来,对他们说:“你们要听,也要明白。 11 入口的不能污秽人,出口的乃能污秽人。” 12 当时,门徒进前来对他说:“法利赛人听见这话不服[a],你知道吗?” 13 耶稣回答说:“凡栽种的物,若不是我天父栽种的,必要拔出来。 14 任凭他们吧!他们是瞎眼领路的。若是瞎子领瞎子,两个人都要掉在坑里。” 15 彼得对耶稣说:“请将这比喻讲给我们听。” 16 耶稣说:“你们到如今还不明白吗? 17 岂不知凡入口的,是运到肚子里,又落在茅厕里吗? 18 唯独出口的,是从心里发出来的,这才污秽人。 19 因为从心里发出来的,有恶念、凶杀、奸淫、苟合、偷盗、妄证、谤讟。 20 这都是污秽人的,至于不洗手吃饭,那却不污秽人。”

耶稣夸奖迦南妇人的信心

21 耶稣离开那里,退到推罗西顿的境内去。 22 有一个迦南妇人,从那地方出来,喊着说:“主啊,大卫的子孙,可怜我!我女儿被鬼附得甚苦。” 23 耶稣却一言不答。门徒进前来求他,说:“这妇人在我们后头喊叫,请打发她走吧!” 24 耶稣说:“我奉差遣,不过是到以色列家迷失的羊那里去。” 25 那妇人来拜他,说:“主啊,帮助我!” 26 他回答说:“不好拿儿女的饼丢给狗吃。” 27 妇人说:“主啊,不错,但是狗也吃它主人桌子上掉下来的碎渣儿!” 28 耶稣说:“妇人,你的信心是大的!照你所要的,给你成全了吧。”从那时候,她女儿就好了。

29 耶稣离开那地方,来到靠近加利利的海边,就上山坐下。 30 有许多人到他那里,带着瘸子、瞎子、哑巴、有残疾的和好些别的病人,都放在他脚前,他就治好了他们。 31 甚至众人都稀奇,因为看见哑巴说话、残疾的痊愈、瘸子行走、瞎子看见,他们就归荣耀给以色列的神。

给四千人吃饱

Breaking Human Traditions

15 Then Pharisees[a] and experts in the law[b] came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,[c] “Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their[d] hands when they eat.”[e] He answered them,[f] “And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God said,[g]Honor your father and mother[h] and ‘Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’[i] But you say, ‘If someone tells his father or mother, “Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,”[j] he does not need to honor his father.’[k] You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,

This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart[l] is far from me,
and they worship me in vain,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”[m]

True Defilement

10 Then he called the crowd to him and said,[n] “Listen and understand. 11 What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what[o] comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came to him and said, “Do you know that when the Pharisees[p] heard this saying they were offended?” 13 And he replied,[q] “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. 14 Leave them! They are blind guides.[r] If someone who is blind leads another who is blind,[s] both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter[t] said to him, “Explain this parable to us.” 16 Jesus[u] said, “Even after all this, are you still so foolish? 17 Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?[v] 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person.”[w]

A Canaanite Woman’s Faith

21 After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A[x] Canaanite woman from that area came[y] and cried out,[z] “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!” 23 But he did not answer her a word. Then[aa] his disciples came and begged him,[ab] “Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us.” 24 So[ac] he answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and bowed down[ad] before him and said,[ae] “Lord, help me!” 26 “It is not right[af] to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,”[ag] he said.[ah] 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied,[ai] “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then[aj] Jesus answered her, “Woman,[ak] your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Healing Many Others

29 When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down. 30 Then[al] large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They[am] laid them at his feet, and he healed them. 31 As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.

The Feeding of the Four Thousand

32 Then Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way.” 33 The disciples said to him, “Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?” 34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Seven—and a few small fish.” 35 After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds.[an] 37 They[ao] all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. 38 Not counting children and women,[ap] there were 4,000 men who ate.[aq] 39 After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat[ar] and went to the region of Magadan.[as]

The verb in this phrase is future tense, and it is negated with οὐ μή (ou mē), the strongest negation possible in Greek. A literal translation of the phrase does not capture the intended sense of the statement; it would actually make the Pharisees sound as if they agreed with Jesus. Instead, a more interpretive translation has been used to focus upon the release from family obligations that the Pharisees allowed in these circumstances.sn Here Jesus refers to something that has been set aside as a gift to be given to God at some later date, but which is still in the possession of the owner. According to contemporary Jewish tradition, the person who made this claim was absolved from responsibility to support or assist his parents, a clear violation of the Mosaic law to honor one’s parents (v. 4).

Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

These people[g] honor Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me.
They worship Me in vain,

Defilement Is from Within

10 Summoning the crowd, He told them, “Listen and understand: 11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles(H) a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”(I)

12 Then the disciples came up and told Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard this statement?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.(J) 14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides.[i] And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)

15 Then Peter replied to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”(L)

16 “Are even you still lacking in understanding?” He[j] asked. 17 “Don’t you realize[k] that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?[l] 18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man.(M) 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies,(N) blasphemies.(O) 20 These are the things that defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”(P)

A Gentile Mother’s Faith

21 When Jesus left there,(Q) He withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out,[m] “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is cruelly tormented by a demon.”(S)

23 Yet He did not say a word to her. So His disciples(T) approached Him and urged Him, “Send her away because she cries out after us.”[n]

24 He replied, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”(U)

25 But she came, knelt before Him, and said, “Lord, help me!”

26 He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to their dogs.”(V)

27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table!”

28 Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment[o] her daughter was cured.(W)

Healing Many People

29 Moving on from there,(X) Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee.(Y) He went up on a mountain and sat there, 30 and large crowds came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at His feet, and He healed them. 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the deformed restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing.(Z) And they gave glory to the God of Israel.

Feeding 4,000

32 Now Jesus summoned His disciples and said,(AA) “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry; otherwise they might collapse on the way.”

33 The disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place(AB) to fill such a crowd?”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them.

“Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”

35 After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and He gave thanks, broke them, and kept on giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.(AC) 37 They all ate and were filled. Then they collected the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 38 Now those who ate were 4,000 men, besides women and children. 39 After dismissing the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.[p](AD)
