论爱仇敌
27 “但是，我告诉你们这些听道的人，要爱你们的仇敌，要善待恨你们的人， 28 要为咒诅你们的人祝福，要替恶待你们的人祷告。 29 如果有人打你一边的脸，连另一边也转过来让他打。如果有人夺你的外衣，连内衣也由他拿去。 30 有人向你求什么，就给他；有人拿了你的东西，不要追讨。 31 你们想要别人怎样对待你们，你们就要怎样对待别人。 32 如果你们只爱那些爱你们的人，有什么功劳呢？就是罪人也会这样做。 33 如果你们只善待那些善待你们的人，有什么功劳呢？就是罪人也会这样做。 34 如果你们借钱给人，指望收回，有什么功劳呢？即使罪人也会借贷给罪人，日后再如数收回。
35 “然而，要爱你们的仇敌，善待他们；无论借出什么，都不要指望归还。这样，你们将有大赏赐，并且将成为至高者的儿子，因为祂以恩慈待那些忘恩负义和作恶的人。 36 你们要怜悯人，像你们的天父怜悯人一样。
责人先责己
37 “不要论断人，免得你们被人论断；不要定人的罪，免得自己也被定罪。要饶恕人，这样你们也必蒙饶恕。 38 你们要给他人，这样上帝必给你们，并且会用大号升斗摇匀压实，满满地倒给你们，因为你们用什么样的量器量给别人，上帝也会用什么样的量器量给你们。”
39 耶稣又给他们讲了个比喻，说：“瞎子岂能给瞎子带路？二人岂不是要双双掉进坑里吗？ 40 学生不会高过老师，学成之后不过像老师一样。 41 为什么你只看见你弟兄眼中的小刺，却看不见自己眼中的大梁呢？ 42 你既看不见自己眼中的大梁，又怎能对弟兄说‘让我除去你眼中的小刺’呢？你这伪君子啊！要先除掉自己眼中的大梁，才能看得清楚，以便清除弟兄眼中的小刺。
树和果子
43 “好树不结坏果子，坏树也结不出好果子。 44 树的好坏从果子就可以分辨出来。人不会从荆棘中采集无花果，也不会在蒺藜上摘取葡萄。 45 善人心存良善，就从他里面发出良善；恶人心存邪恶，就从他里面发出邪恶。因为心里充满的，口里自然会说出来。
两种盖房子的人
46 “你们为什么‘主啊，主啊’地称呼我，却不遵行我的话呢？ 47 我要告诉你们那到我这里来，听了我的话又去遵行的人是什么样。 48 他好比一个人盖房子，把地挖深，根基立在磐石上。当河流泛滥，洪水冲击房子时，房子却屹立不摇，因为它的根基稳固。 49 但听了我的话却不遵行的人，好比一个人没有打根基，便将房子盖在地面上，洪水一冲，房子立刻倒塌，完全毁坏了。”
百夫长的信心
7 耶稣向众人讲完道后，进了迦百农。 2 当时，有一个百夫长很赏识的奴仆病了，生命垂危。 3 百夫长听说耶稣的事，就托几位犹太人的长老去请耶稣来医治他的奴仆。 4 他们便来恳求耶稣，说：“这位百夫长值得你帮助， 5 因为他爱我们的同胞，为我们建造会堂。” 6 耶稣就跟他们去了。
快抵达时，那百夫长又请几位朋友去见耶稣，对祂说：“主啊，不用劳驾，我不配让你亲自来我家。 7 我自认不配见你的面，只要你一句话，我的奴仆必定康复。 8 因为我有上司，也有部下。我命令我的部下去，他就去；要他来，他就来。我吩咐奴仆做什么事，他一定照办。”
9 耶稣听了这番话，感到惊奇，转身对跟从祂的百姓说：“我告诉你们，就是在以色列，我也从未见过有这么大信心的人。”
10 派去的几位朋友回到百夫长家里，发现那奴仆已经痊愈了。
寡妇的独子起死回生
11 过了不久[a]，耶稣去拿因城，随行的有门徒和一大群人。 12 耶稣快到城门口时，从城里走出一队送殡的人，死者是一个寡妇的独子，有许多城中的人陪着她。 13 耶稣看见那寡妇，怜悯之心油然而生，就对她说：“不要哭！” 14 随即上前按住抬尸架，抬的人停了下来。耶稣说：“年轻人，我吩咐你起来！” 15 那死者就坐了起来，并开口说话。耶稣把他交给他母亲。
16 在场的人惊惧万分，把荣耀归给上帝，说：“我们中间出了一位大先知！”又说：“上帝眷顾了祂的百姓！” 17 有关祂的这消息传遍了犹太和附近地区。
施洗者约翰的疑问
18 约翰从自己的门徒那里获悉这些事后， 19 就叫了两个门徒来，派他们去问主：“将要来的那位就是你吗？还是我们要等别人呢？”
20 他们找到耶稣，便问：“施洗者约翰派我们来请教你，‘将要来的那位就是你吗？还是我们要等别人呢？’”
21 那时，耶稣刚治好了许多患各种疾病和被鬼附身的人，又使许多瞎子得见光明。 22 耶稣便回答说：“你们回去把所见所闻告诉约翰，就是瞎子看见，瘸子走路，麻风病人得洁净，聋子听见，死人复活，穷人听到福音。 23 凡对我没有失去信心的人有福了！”
耶稣称赞施洗者约翰
24 约翰的门徒离去后，耶稣对众人谈论约翰，说：“你们从前去旷野要看什么呢？看随风摇动的芦苇吗？ 25 如果不是，你们到底想看什么？是看穿绫罗绸缎的人吗？那些衣着华丽、生活奢侈的人住在王宫里。 26 你们究竟想看什么？看先知吗？是的，我告诉你们，他不只是先知。 27 圣经上说，‘看啊，我要差遣我的使者在你前面为你预备道路。’这里所指的就是约翰。 28 我告诉你们，凡妇人所生的，没有一个比约翰大，但上帝国中最微不足道的也比他大。”
29 众百姓和税吏听了这番话，都承认上帝是公义的，因为他们接受了约翰的洗礼。 30 但那些法利赛人和律法教师没有接受约翰的洗礼，拒绝了上帝为他们所定的旨意。
31 主又说：“我用什么来比拟这个世代的人呢？他们像什么呢？ 32 他们就如街头上戏耍的孩童——彼此呼叫，
“‘我们吹娶亲的乐曲，
你们不跳舞；
我们唱送葬的哀歌，
你们不哭泣。’
33 施洗者约翰来了，禁食禁酒，你们就说他被鬼附身了； 34 人子来了，又吃又喝，你们就说，‘看啊，祂是个贪吃好酒之徒，与税吏和罪人为友！’ 35 然而，智慧会在追求智慧的人身上得到验证。”
罪妇的悔改
36 有一个法利赛人请耶稣到他家里吃饭，耶稣应邀赴宴。 37 那城里住着一个女人，生活败坏。她听说耶稣在那法利赛人家里吃饭，就带了一个盛满香膏的玉瓶进去。 38 她站在耶稣背后，挨着祂的脚哭，泪水滴湿了祂的脚，就用自己的头发擦干，又连连亲祂的脚，并抹上香膏。
39 请耶稣的法利赛人看在眼里，心想：“如果这人真的是先知，就该知道摸祂的是谁，是个什么样的女人，她是个罪人。”
40 耶稣对他说：“西门，我有话跟你说。”
西门答道：“老师，请说。”
41 耶稣说：“有一个债主借给一个人五百个银币，又借给另一个人五十个银币。 42 二人都没有能力还债，这位债主就免了他们的债务。你想，哪一位会更爱债主呢？”
43 西门答道：“我相信是那个被免去较多债的人。”
44 耶稣说：“你判断得对！”随后转向那女人，继续对西门说：“你看见这女人了吗？我到你家里来，你没有拿水给我洗脚，这女人却用她的眼泪洗我的脚，还亲自用头发擦干。 45 你没有亲吻我，但我进来以后，这女人却不停地吻我的脚。 46 你没有用油为我抹头，这女人却用香膏抹我的脚。 47 所以我告诉你，她众多的罪都被赦免了，因此她的爱深切；那些获得赦免少的，他们的爱也少。”
48 耶稣对那女人说：“你的罪都被赦免了。”
49 同席的人彼此议论说：“这人是谁？竟然能赦免人的罪！”
50 耶稣又对那女人说：“你的信心救了你，平安地走吧！”
撒种的比喻
8 此后，耶稣到各城镇去传扬上帝国的福音。同行的有十二使徒， 2 还有几个曾被邪灵和疾病缠身、现在已被医治的妇女。其中有抹大拉的玛丽亚，耶稣曾经从她身上赶出七个鬼， 3 还有希律的管家苦撒的妻子约亚拿，此外还有苏撒拿等其他妇女。她们用自己的钱财资助耶稣和门徒。
4 那时，人群络绎不绝地从各地聚集到耶稣面前，耶稣用比喻教导他们，说： 5 “有一个农夫到田里撒种，有些种子落在路旁，被人践踏，又被飞鸟吃掉了； 6 有些落在盖着浅土的石头地上，因水分不足，幼苗刚长出来就枯萎了； 7 有些落在荆棘丛中，荆棘长起来便把幼苗挤住了； 8 有些落在沃土里，发芽生长，结出百倍的果实。”耶稣讲完这番话后，高声说：“有耳可听的，就要留心听。”
9 门徒请耶稣解释这比喻的意思， 10 耶稣便说：“上帝国的奥秘只让你们知道，对其他人，我就用比喻，使他们看却看不见，听却听不明白。 11 这个比喻的意思是这样，种子代表上帝的道， 12 种子落在路旁是指人听了道，随后魔鬼来把道从他们心里夺走了，不让他们相信并得救。 13 种子落在盖着浅土的石头地上是指人听了道，欣然接受了，但是没有根基，只是暂时相信，一遇到试炼就放弃了。 14 种子落在荆棘丛中是指人听了道，后来被生活的忧虑、钱财和享乐缠住了，以致结不出成熟的果实来。 15 种子落在沃土里则是指人听了道，用诚实良善的心坚忍持守，至终结出果实。
点灯的比喻
16 “没有人点了灯，却用器皿把它盖起来或放到床底下，而是放在灯台上，使进来的人能见到光。 17 掩盖的事终会暴露出来，隐藏的秘密终会被人知道。 18 因此，你们要留心听，因为凡有的，还要给他更多；凡没有的，连他自以为已经拥有的也要被夺去。”
耶稣的亲属
19 这时，耶稣的母亲和兄弟来找祂，由于人太多，他们无法靠近耶稣， 20 有人就对祂说：“你的母亲和兄弟在外面想见你。” 21 耶稣却说：“听见上帝的话语并遵行的人就是我的母亲、我的弟兄。”
平静风浪
22 有一天，耶稣对门徒说：“我们到湖的对岸去吧。”于是他们坐船前往对岸。 23 途中耶稣睡着了。不料湖上忽然狂风大作，船灌满了水，非常危险。 24 门徒过来唤醒耶稣，说：“主啊，主啊！我们快淹死了！”
耶稣醒来，就斥责风浪，顿时风平浪静了。
25 耶稣对他们说：“你们的信心在哪里呢？”
门徒又惊又怕，彼此议论说：“祂究竟是谁？一发命令，连风浪都听祂的！”
格拉森赶鬼
26 他们渡过加利利湖，到了格拉森地区。 27 耶稣上岸后，迎面遇见当地一个被鬼附身的人。那人长期赤身露体，不住在房屋里，只住在墓穴中。 28 他一见到耶稣，就扑倒在祂面前，高声喊叫：“至高上帝的儿子耶稣，我和你有什么关系？求求你，不要折磨我！” 29 这是因为耶稣已命令污鬼离开那人。那人多次被污鬼操纵，人们用铁链脚镣把他锁起来看管，他竟把锁链也扯断，被鬼催逼到荒野。
30 耶稣问他：“你叫什么名字？”
他说：“我叫‘群’。”因为有一大群鬼附在那人身上。 31 鬼不断央求耶稣不要叫它们到无底坑去。
32 当时有一大群猪在附近山坡上觅食，污鬼就央求耶稣准许它们进入猪群，耶稣答应了。 33 于是那群鬼便离开那人，进入猪群。那群猪就一路奔下陡坡，冲进湖里淹死了。 34 放猪的人见此情形拔腿就跑，把这事告诉了城里和乡下的人。 35 人们出来看个究竟，到了耶稣那里，发现那曾被鬼附身的人衣着整齐、神智清醒地坐在耶稣脚前，他们都很害怕。 36 目击者把事情的始末告诉了他们。 37 格拉森地区的居民都十分害怕，请求耶稣离开那里，耶稣便乘船回去了。
38 那从前被鬼附身的人恳求跟耶稣同行，耶稣却对他说： 39 “你回家吧，把上帝为你所行的奇事告诉别人。”他就回去，走遍全城，四处传扬耶稣为他所行的奇事。
雅鲁求救
40 耶稣回到对岸，受到等候在那里的百姓的欢迎。 41 一个名叫雅鲁的会堂主管走过来俯伏在耶稣脚前，求耶稣到他家去，因为他有一个大约十二岁的独生女快要死了。
42 耶稣前去雅鲁家的时候，人群拥挤着祂。
患血漏病妇人的信心
43 有一个患了十二年血漏病的妇人耗尽了积蓄，到处求医，但没有人能医治她。 44 妇人挤到耶稣的背后，摸了一下祂衣服的穗边，她的血漏立刻止住了。
45 耶稣问：“谁摸我？”没有人说摸过祂。
彼得说：“老师，众人都在拥挤你。”
46 耶稣却说：“一定有人摸了我，因为我感觉有能力从我身上出去。”
47 那妇人知道无法隐瞒，就战战兢兢地走过来，俯伏在耶稣脚前，把她摸了耶稣的衣裳后顽疾马上痊愈的始末当众说了出来。
48 耶稣对她说：“女儿，你的信心救了你！安心回去吧。”
雅鲁女儿死而复活
49 耶稣还在说话的时候，有人从雅鲁家赶来，对雅鲁说：“你的女儿已经死了，不用麻烦老师了。”
50 耶稣听见，就对雅鲁说：“不要怕，只要信。你的女儿一定会好的！”
51 到了雅鲁家，耶稣只准彼得、雅各、约翰和雅鲁夫妇跟祂进去。 52 屋内的人都在为那女孩哀伤哭泣，耶稣说：“不要哭，她没有死，只是睡着了。” 53 众人就讥笑祂，因为他们明明知道那女孩死了。 54 耶稣拉着那女孩的手，说：“孩子，起来！” 55 她的灵魂就回来了，她立刻站了起来。耶稣吩咐人给她东西吃。 56 她的父母非常惊讶，耶稣却嘱咐他们不要把这事传开。
差遣十二使徒
9 耶稣召集了十二个使徒，赐他们能力和权柄可以医病赶鬼， 2 又差遣他们出去宣讲上帝国的福音、医治病人。 3 耶稣叮嘱他们：“出门的时候，什么也不要带，不要带手杖、背包、干粮、金钱，也不要带两件衣服。 4 有人家接待你们，就住下来，一直住到你们离开。 5 如果有人不欢迎你们，你们在离开那城的时候，就把脚上的尘土跺掉，作为对他们的警告。”
6 使徒领命出发，走遍各个乡村，到处宣扬福音，替人治病。
希律的困惑
7 耶稣的事迹很快便传到希律耳中，令他十分困惑，因为有人说：“约翰死而复活了”， 8 有人说：“以利亚显现了”，还有人说：“古代的某个先知复活了”。 9 希律说：“约翰已经被我斩首，这个行奇事的人到底是谁呢？”于是他想见耶稣。
五饼二鱼的神迹
10 使徒回来后，向耶稣报告了他们所行的事。随后耶稣带着他们悄悄地来到伯赛大城。 11 但百姓发现了耶稣的行踪，随即也赶来了。耶稣接待他们，向他们宣讲天国的福音，医好了有病的人。 12 黄昏将近，十二个使徒过来对耶稣说：“请遣散众人，好让他们到附近的村庄去借宿找吃的，因为这地方很偏僻。”
13 耶稣对他们说：“你们给他们吃的吧。”
使徒们说：“我们只有五个饼和两条鱼，除非我们去买食物才够这么一大群人吃。” 14 当时那里约有五千男人。
耶稣便对使徒说：“让这些人分组坐下，每组大约五十人。” 15 于是使徒安排众人都坐好。 16 耶稣拿起那五个饼、两条鱼，举目望着天祝谢后，掰开递给门徒，让他们分给众人。 17 大家都吃饱了，把剩下的零碎收拾起来，竟装满了十二个篮子。
彼得宣告耶稣是基督
18 有一次，耶稣独自祷告的时候，门徒也在旁边。
耶稣问他们：“人们说我是谁？”
19 他们答道：“有人说你是施洗者约翰，也有人说你是以利亚，或是一位复活的古代先知。”
20 耶稣对他们说：“那么，你们说我是谁？”
彼得回答说：“你是上帝所立的基督。”
21 耶稣郑重地吩咐他们不许泄露祂的身份， 22 又说：“人子必须受许多苦，被长老、祭司长和律法教师弃绝，杀害，但必在第三天复活。”
跟从主的代价
23 耶稣又教导众人说：“如果有人要跟从我，就应当舍己，天天背起他的十字架跟从我。 24 因为想救自己生命的，必失去生命；但为了我而失去生命的，必得到生命。 25 人若赚得全世界，却失去自己或丧掉自己，又有什么益处呢？ 26 如果有人以我和我的道为耻，将来人子在自己、天父和圣天使的荣耀中降临时，也必以这人为耻。 27 我实在告诉你们，有些站在这里的人在有生之年就必看见上帝的国。”
登山变象
28 讲完这些话后大约八天，耶稣带着彼得、约翰和雅各一同到山上祷告。 29 耶稣在祷告的时候，容貌改变了，衣裳洁白发光。 30 忽然，摩西和以利亚二人在跟耶稣交谈。 31 二人在荣光中显现，谈论有关耶稣离世的事情，就是祂在耶路撒冷将要成就的事。 32 彼得和两个同伴都困得睡着了，他们醒来后，看见了耶稣的荣光以及站在祂身边的两个人。 33 当摩西和以利亚要离开时，彼得对耶稣说：“老师，我们在这里真好！让我们搭三座帐篷，一座给你，一座给摩西，一座给以利亚。”其实彼得并不知道自己在说什么。 34 他的话还没说完，有一朵云彩飘来，笼罩他们，他们进入云彩中，都很害怕。 35 云彩中有声音说：“这是我的儿子，是我拣选的，你们要听从祂！” 36 声音消逝了，门徒只见耶稣独自在那里。那些日子，他们对这事都绝口不提，没有告诉任何人。
山下赶鬼
37 次日，他们来到山下，有一大群人迎接耶稣。 38 人群中有一个人高声喊叫：“老师，求求你看看我的儿子吧！他是我的独生子， 39 鬼控制着他，他常常突然狂喊乱叫、抽搐、口吐白沫，倍受折磨，无休无止。 40 我曾求过你的门徒把鬼赶出去，但他们都无能为力。”
41 耶稣回答说：“唉！这又不信又败坏的世代啊！我要跟你们在一起容忍你们多久呢？把你的儿子带来吧。”
42 那孩子走过来时，鬼又把他摔倒，使他抽搐，耶稣立刻斥责污鬼，把那孩子治好了，交给他父亲。 43 大家看见了上帝的大能，都很惊奇。
再次预言受难
他们正为耶稣所做的一切惊讶不已时，耶稣对门徒说： 44 “你们要牢记人子所说的话，因为祂将要被交到人的手里。” 45 但门徒不明白这句话的意思，因为还没有向他们显明，他们听不懂，又不敢追问耶稣。
论地位
46 门徒开始议论他们当中谁最伟大。 47 耶稣知道他们的心思，就叫了一个小孩子来，让他站在自己身旁， 48 然后对门徒说：“任何人为了我的缘故接待这样一个小孩子，就是接待我；接待我，就是接待差我来的那位。你们当中最卑微的其实是最伟大的。”
49 约翰说：“老师，我们看见有人奉你的名赶鬼，就阻止他，因为他不是和我们一起跟从你的。” 50 耶稣却对他说：“你不要阻止他，因为不反对你们的，就是支持你们的。”
不肯接待耶稣的村庄
51 耶稣被接回天家的日子快到了，祂决定前往耶路撒冷。 52 祂先派人到撒玛利亚的一个村庄去预备食宿， 53 但撒玛利亚人见他们是上耶路撒冷去的，不肯接待他们。 54 祂的门徒雅各和约翰见状，说：“主啊，你要我们[b]叫天上的火降下来烧死他们吗？” 55 耶稣转过身来责备他们[c]。 56 接着，一行人改道去另一个村子。
跟从主的代价
57 在路上有人对耶稣说：“无论你往哪里去，我都要跟从你。”
58 耶稣对他说：“狐狸有洞，飞鸟有窝，人子却没有安枕之处。”
59 耶稣又对另一个人说：“跟从我！”但是那人说：“主啊，请让我先回去安葬我的父亲。”
60 耶稣说：“让死人去埋葬他们的死人吧，你只管去传扬上帝国的福音。”
61 又有一个人说：“主啊！我愿意跟从你，但请让我先回去向家人告别。”
62 耶稣说：“手扶着犁向后看的人不配进上帝的国。”
差遣门徒
10 事后，主拣选了七十个门徒[d]，差遣他们两个两个地出去，先到祂将要去的城镇村庄， 2 并对他们说：“要收割的庄稼很多，工人却很少，因此你们要祈求庄稼的主人派更多的工人去收割祂的庄稼。
3 “你们去吧！我差你们出去，就像把羊羔送入狼群。 4 钱袋、背包和鞋都不要带，在路上也不要与人寒暄。 5 无论到哪一户人家，要先说，‘愿祝福临到这家！’ 6 如果那里有配得祝福的人，祝福自然会临到那人，否则祝福仍归给你们。 7 不要搬来搬去，要固定住在一家，接受那家的款待，因为工人理应得到工钱。
8 “你们无论到哪一个城镇，如果人们接待你们，就吃他们摆上的饮食。 9 要医治那城里的病人，告诉他们，‘上帝的国临近你们了。’ 10 但如果哪一个城镇的人不欢迎你们，你们就到街上宣告， 11 ‘就连你们城里的尘土粘在我们脚上，我们都要跺掉，但是要知道，上帝的国临近了。’ 12 我告诉你们，在审判之日，那城所受的刑罚将比所多玛所受的还重！
13 “哥拉汛啊，你大祸临头了！伯赛大啊，你大祸临头了！我在你们当中所行的神迹，如果行在泰尔和西顿，那里的人早就身披麻衣，头蒙灰尘，坐在地上悔改了。 14 在审判之日，你们将比泰尔和西顿受更重的刑罚！
15 “迦百农啊，你将被提升到天上吗？不！你将被打落到阴间。”
16 耶稣继续对门徒说：“谁听从你们，就是听从我；谁拒绝你们，就是拒绝我；拒绝我的，就是拒绝差我来的那位。”
17 七十个门徒兴高采烈地回来说：“主啊，我们奉你的名行事，甚至降服了鬼魔。”
18 耶稣回答说：“我看见撒旦像闪电一样从天上坠下。 19 我已经给你们权柄，使你们能践踏蛇和蝎子，胜过仇敌的权势，没有什么能伤害你们。 20 然而，不要为了邪灵向你们降服而高兴，要因你们的名字记录在天上而高兴。”
21 就在这时候，耶稣受圣灵感动，充满喜乐地说：“父啊，天地的主，我颂赞你！因为你把这些事向聪明、有学问的人隐藏起来，却启示给像孩童一般的人。父啊！是的，这正是你的美意。 22 我父将一切交给了我。除了父，没有人认识子；除了子和受子启示的人，没有人认识父。”
23 随后，耶稣转身悄悄地对门徒说：“谁看到你们今日所看到的，谁就有福了。 24 我告诉你们，以前有许多先知和君王渴望看见你们所看见的，听见你们所听见的，却未能如愿。”
好撒玛利亚人的比喻
25 有一次，一名律法教师站起来试探耶稣，说：“老师，我应该怎样做才能得永生呢？”
26 耶稣反问他：“律法怎么说？你怎么理解？”
27 律法教师答道：“‘你要全心、全情、全力、全意爱主——你的上帝’，又要‘爱邻如己’。” 28 耶稣说：“你答得对，照着去做就有永生了。”
29 律法教师想证明自己有理，就问：“那么，谁是我的邻居呢？”
30 耶稣回答说：“有个人从耶路撒冷去耶利哥，途中被劫。强盗剥了他的衣服，把他打个半死，丢在那里，然后扬长而去。

7 When Jesus had finished saying all this(AB) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(AC) 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(AD)
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(AE) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(AF) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe(AG) and praised God.(AH) “A great prophet(AI) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(AJ) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(AK)
Jesus and John the Baptist(AL)
18 John’s(AM) disciples(AN) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(AO) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(AP) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(AQ) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(AS) is greater than he.”
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(AT) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(AU) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(AV) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(AW) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(AX)(AY)
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(AZ) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[c] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(BA) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(BB) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(BC) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(BD)
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(BE) go in peace.”(BF)
The Parable of the Sower(BG)
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(BH) The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(BI) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(BJ) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”
When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(BK)
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(BL) but to others I speak in parables, so that,
11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(BN) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(BO) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(BP) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
A Lamp on a Stand
16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(BQ) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(BR) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(BS)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(BT)
19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(BU) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(BV)
Jesus Calms the Storm(BW)(BX)
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(BY) we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked(BZ) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(CA) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(CB)(CC)
26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[e] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(CD) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(CE) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(CF)
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(CG) and was drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(CH) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(CI) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(CJ) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(CK)
40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(CL) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(CM) for twelve years,[f] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(CN) and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(CO) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(CP) I know that power has gone out from me.”(CQ)
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(CR) Go in peace.”(CS)
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(CT) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(CU) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(CV) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(CW)
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(CX) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(CY)
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(CZ)(DA)
9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(DB) and to cure diseases,(DC) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(DD) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(DE) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(DF) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
7 Now Herod(DG) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(DH) had been raised from the dead,(DI) 8 others that Elijah had appeared,(DJ) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(DK) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(DL)
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(DM)(DN)
10 When the apostles(DO) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(DP) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(DQ) and healed those who needed healing.
12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”
They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)
But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.(DR) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(DS)(DT)
18 Once when Jesus was praying(DU) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(DV) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(DW)
20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(DX)
Jesus Predicts His Death
21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(DY) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(DZ) must suffer many things(EA) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(EB) and he must be killed(EC) and on the third day(ED) be raised to life.”(EE)
23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(EF) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(EG) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(EH) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(EI)
27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration(EJ)
28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(EK) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(EL) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[g](EM) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(EN) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(EO) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(EP) listen to him.”(EQ) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(ER)
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(ES)
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(ET) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(EU) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(EV) and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(EW) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(EX) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(EY) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(EZ)
49 “Master,”(FA) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(FB)
Samaritan Opposition
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(FC) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(FD) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(FE) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(FF) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[h]?”(FG) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(FH)
57 As they were walking along the road,(FI) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(FJ) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(FK)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(FL)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(FM)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(FN)(FO)(FP)
10 After this the Lord(FQ) appointed seventy-two[i] others(FR) and sent them two by two(FS) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(FT) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(FU) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(FV) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(FW) Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(FX) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(FY) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(FZ) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(GA) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(GB) than for that town.(GC)
13 “Woe to you,(GD) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth(GE) and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(GF) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[j]
16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(GG)
17 The seventy-two(GH) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(GI)
18 He replied, “I saw Satan(GJ) fall like lightning from heaven.(GK) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(GL) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(GM)
21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(GN) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(GO) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(GP)
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(GQ)
The Parable of the Good Samaritan(GR)
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(GS)
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[k];(GT) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[l]”(GU)
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(GV)
29 But he wanted to justify himself,(GW) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(GX) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(GY) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[m] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(GZ) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(HA) who sat at the Lord’s feet(HB) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(HC) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(HD) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[n](HE) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(HF)(HG)
11 One day Jesus was praying(HH) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(HI) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[o]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(HJ) come.[p]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[q](HK)
And lead us not into temptation.[r]’”(HL)
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[s] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(HM)
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(HN) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[t] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul(HO)(HP)
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(HQ) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(HR) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(HS) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(HT)
17 Jesus knew their thoughts(HU) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.

39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
10 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
11 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
