警戒门徒
12 这时，成千上万的人聚集在一起，甚至互相践踏。耶稣先对门徒说：“你们要提防法利赛人的酵，就是他们的伪善。 2 掩盖的事终会暴露出来，隐藏的秘密终会被人知道。 3 你们在暗处说的，将在明处被人听见；你们在密室里的私语，将在屋顶上被人宣扬。
4 “朋友们，我告诉你们，不要惧怕那些杀害人的身体后再也无计可施的人。 5 我告诉你们应该惧怕谁，要惧怕上帝——祂有权终结人的生命，并把人丢在地狱里。是的，我告诉你们，要惧怕祂！
6 “五只麻雀不是只卖两个铜钱吗？但上帝连一只麻雀也不会遗忘。 7 其实就连你们的头发都被数过了。不要害怕，你们比许多麻雀要贵重！
8 “我告诉你们，凡在人面前承认我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也必承认他。 9 凡在人面前否认我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也要否认他。 10 说话得罪人子的，还可以得到赦免，但亵渎圣灵的，必得不到赦免！ 11 当人押你们到会堂，或到官员和当权者面前时，不要顾虑如何辩解，或说什么话， 12 因为到时候圣灵必指示你们当说的话。”
无知富翁的比喻
13 这时，人群中有人对耶稣说：“老师，请你劝劝我的兄长跟我分家产吧。”
14 耶稣答道：“朋友，谁派我做你们的审判官或仲裁，为你们分家产呢？” 15 接着，祂对众人说：“你们要小心防范一切的贪心，因为人的生命并不在于家道富足。”
16 耶稣又讲了一个比喻，说：“有一个富翁，他的田里大丰收， 17 于是心里盘算，‘我储藏农产的地方不够了，怎么办呢？’ 18 于是他说，‘不如把原有的仓库拆掉，建几座更大的，好储藏我所有的粮食和财物！ 19 那时，我就可以对自己说，“你积存这么多财产，一生享用不尽，现在大可高枕无忧、尽情地吃喝玩乐吧！”’ 20 但上帝对他说，‘无知的人啊，今晚就要取走你的命！你所预备的一切留给谁享用呢？’”
21 耶稣说：“这就是那些只顾为自己积财、在上帝面前却不富足之人的写照。”
不要为衣食忧虑
22 耶稣继续对门徒说：“所以，我告诉你们，不要为生活忧虑，如吃什么，也不要为身体忧虑，如穿什么。 23 因为生命比饮食重要，身体比穿着重要。 24 你们看，乌鸦不种也不收，没仓也没库，上帝尚且养活它们，你们比飞鸟不知要贵重多少！
25 “你们谁能用忧虑使自己多活片刻呢？ 26 既然你们连这样的小事都无能为力，又何必为其余的事忧虑呢？ 27 看看百合花如何生长吧，它们既不劳苦，也不纺织，但我告诉你们，就连所罗门王最显赫时的穿戴还不如一朵百合花！
28 “野地的草今天还在，明天就要被丢在炉中，上帝还这样装扮它们，何况你们呢？你们的信心太小了！ 29 你们不要为吃什么喝什么忧虑， 30 因为这些都是外族人的追求，你们的天父知道你们需要这些。 31 你们要寻求祂的国，祂必供给你们的需要。
32 “你们这一小群人啊，不要怕！因为你们的天父乐意把祂的国赐给你们。 33 要变卖你们的家产去周济穷人，要为自己预备永不破损的钱袋，在天上积攒取之不尽的财宝，那里没有贼偷，也没有虫蛀。 34 因为你们的财宝在哪里，你们的心也在哪里。
警醒预备
35 “你们要束上腰带，准备服侍，要点亮灯， 36 像奴仆们等候主人从婚宴回来。主人回来一叩门，奴仆就可以立即给他开门。 37 主人回来，看见奴仆警醒等候，奴仆就有福了！我实在告诉你们，主人必束上腰带请他们坐席，并亲自服侍他们。 38 无论主人在深夜或黎明回家，若发现奴仆警醒等候，奴仆就有福了。
39 “你们都知道，一家的主人若预先知道贼什么时候来，一定不会让贼入屋偷窃。 40 同样，你们也要做好准备，因为在你们意想不到的时候，人子就来了。”
忠仆和恶仆
41 彼得问：“主啊！你这比喻是讲给我们听的，还是讲给众人听的呢？”
42 主说：“谁是那个受主人委托管理家中大小仆役、按时分粮食给他们、又忠心又精明的管家呢？ 43 主人回家时，看见他尽忠职守，他就有福了。 44 我实在告诉你们，主人一定会把所有产业都交给他管理。 45 但如果他以为主人不会那么快回来，就殴打仆婢、吃喝醉酒， 46 主人会在他想不到的日子、不知道的时辰回来，严厉地惩罚[a]他，使他和不忠不信的人同受严刑。 47 明知主人的意思却不准备，也不遵行主人吩咐的仆人，必受更重的责打。 48 但因不知道而做了该受惩罚之事的仆人，必少受责打。多给谁，就向谁多取；多托付谁，就向谁多要。
家庭分裂
49 “我来是要把火丢在地上，我多么希望这火已经燃烧起来。 50 我有要受的‘洗礼’，我何等迫切地想完成这‘洗礼’啊！ 51 你们以为我来是要使天下太平吗？不，我告诉你们，我来是要使地上起纷争。 52 从今以后，一家五口会彼此相争，三个人反对两个人，或是两个人反对三个人， 53 父子相争，母女对立，婆媳反目。”
明辨是非
54 然后，祂又对众人说：“你们看见云从西方升起，就说，‘快下雨了！’果然如此。 55 南风一起，你们就说，‘天必燥热’，你们也说对了。 56 你们这些伪善的人！既然知道观察天色、预测天气，为什么不知道观察这个世代呢？ 57 你们为什么不自己明辨是非呢？ 58 如果你和控告你的人要去对薄公堂，要尽量在路上跟对方和解，以免被拉到审判官面前，审判官派差役把你关进监牢。 59 我告诉你，除非你付清所欠的每一分钱，否则休想出监牢。”

Предостережение против лицемерия(A)
12 Тем временем собрались огромные толпы, и люди теснили друг друга. Иса начал говорить, обращаясь сначала к Своим ученикам:
– Берегитесь закваски блюстителей Закона, то есть лицемерия. 2 Нет ничего скрытого, что не открылось бы, и нет ничего тайного, что не стало бы известным. 3 Поэтому, то что вы говорите в темноте, будет услышано при свете дня, и что вы прошептали на ухо во внутренней комнате, будет провозглашено с крыш.
Страх только перед Всевышним(B)
4 – Я говорю вам, Моим друзьям: не бойтесь тех, кто убивает тело и ничего больше сделать не может. 5 Я скажу вам, кого бояться: бойтесь Всевышнего, Который, убив, может бросить вас в ад. Да, говорю вам, Его бойтесь. 6 Не продают ли пять воробьёв всего за две медные монеты[a]? Однако ни один из них не забыт Всевышним. 7 А у вас даже и волосы на голове все сосчитаны! Не бойтесь – вы дороже множества воробьёв!

8 – Говорю вам: каждого, кто открыто признает Меня перед людьми, того и Ниспосланный как Человек признает перед ангелами Всевышнего, 9 а кто отречётся от Меня перед людьми, от того и Я отрекусь перед ангелами Всевышнего. 10 Всякий, кто скажет что-либо против Ниспосланного как Человек, будет прощён, но тот, кто кощунствует над Святым Духом, не будет прощён.
11 Когда вас приведут на суд в молитвенные дома иудеев, к правителям и власть имущим, не беспокойтесь о том, как вам защитить себя или что вам говорить, 12 потому что Святой Дух в тот самый час научит вас, что вам говорить.
Притча о безумном богаче
13 Кто-то в толпе сказал Исе:
– Учитель, скажи моему брату, чтобы он разделил со мной наследство.
14 Иса ответил:
– Друг, кто Меня назначил судьёй или посредником между вами?
15 И Он сказал им:
– Смотрите, берегитесь жадности. Как бы ни был богат человек, его жизнь от этого не зависит.
16 И Он рассказал им притчу:
– Земля одного богатого человека принесла ему хороший урожай. 17 «Что мне делать? Мне негде хранить весь собранный урожай, – подумал он. – 18 Вот что я сделаю, – решил он тогда, – я снесу мои хранилища и построю большие, в них будет достаточно места для моего зерна и другого имущества. 19 Тогда я смогу сказать себе: теперь у тебя полно добра на много лет. Отдыхай, ешь, пей, веселись».
20 Но Всевышний сказал ему: «Глупец! Сегодня же ночью твою жизнь возьмут у тебя. Кому достанется всё, что ты приготовил?» 21 Так будет с каждым, кто копит богатство для себя, но не приобретает богатства для Всевышнего.
О беспокойстве(D)
22 Затем Иса сказал Своим ученикам:
– Поэтому Я говорю вам: не тревожьтесь о своей жизни, что вам есть, или о своём теле, во что вам одеться. 23 Ведь жизнь важнее пищи, и тело важнее одежды. 24 Посмотрите на воронов, они не сеют и не жнут, у них нет ни хранилищ, ни амбаров, однако Всевышний питает их. Насколько же вы ценнее этих птиц! 25 И кто из вас, беспокоясь, может продлить себе жизнь хотя бы на час? 26 Если вы не можете сделать даже этого, то зачем вам тревожиться об остальном?
27 Подумайте о том, как растут лилии. Они не трудятся и не прядут, но говорю вам, что даже царь Сулейман во всём своём величии не одевался так, как любая из них. 28 Но если Всевышний так одевает траву на поле, которая сегодня есть, а завтра будет брошена в печь, то не оденет ли Он и вас, маловеры? 29 Не беспокойтесь о том, что вам есть или что пить, не тревожьтесь об этом. 30 Ведь все язычники этого мира только об этом и думают, но ваш Небесный Отец знает, что вы нуждаетесь в этом. 31 Ищите лучше Его Царства, и это тоже будет дано вам.
32 Не бойся, малое стадо, ведь вашему Небесному Отцу было угодно дать вам Царство! 33 Продавайте ваше имущество и давайте милостыню. Приобретайте себе такие кошельки, которые не изнашиваются, сокровища на небесах, где ни вор к ним не подберётся, ни моль их не съест. 34 Ведь где ваше богатство, там будет и ваше сердце.
Притча о верных слугах(E)
35 – Будьте всегда наготове: одежды подпоясаны, а светильники горящие, 36 как у тех рабов, что ждут возвращения своего хозяина со свадебного пира. Когда хозяин придёт и постучит, они смогут сразу открыть ему. 37 Благословенны те рабы, которых хозяин, возвратившись, найдёт бодрствующими. Говорю вам истину, он тогда сам подпояшется, как раб, пригласит их возлечь у стола и будет прислуживать им. 38 Благословенны те рабы, которых хозяин застанет готовыми, даже если он придёт среди ночи или перед рассветом. 39 Знайте, что если бы хозяин дома знал, в котором часу придёт вор, то он не позволил бы ему проникнуть в свой дом. 40 Вы тоже должны быть готовы, потому что Ниспосланный как Человек придёт в час, когда вы Его не ждёте.
41 Петир спросил:
– Повелитель, Ты говоришь эту притчу только нам или всем?
42 Иса ответил:
– Кто тогда окажется верным и разумным управляющим, которого хозяин поставил над остальными рабами, чтобы вовремя раздавать им пищу? 43 Благословен тот раб, которого хозяин, когда вернётся, найдёт поступающим так. 44 Говорю вам правду: он доверит ему всё своё имение. 45 Но если тот раб решит: «Мой хозяин придёт ещё не скоро» – и станет избивать рабов и рабынь, есть, пить и пьянствовать, 46 то придёт его хозяин в тот день, когда он не ожидает, и в тот час, когда он не знает. Он рассечёт его надвое и определит ему одну участь с неверными.
47 Тот раб, который знал волю своего хозяина и не приготовился, или не сделал того, что хотел хозяин, будет сильно бит, 48 а тот, кто делает достойное наказания по незнанию, будет бит меньше. Кому было много дано, с того много и потребуют, и кому было много доверено, с того много и спросится.
О будущих разделениях(F)
49 – Я пришёл принести огонь на землю, и как Я хочу, чтобы он уже разгорелся! 50 Но Мне ещё предстоит пройти через тяжёлые испытания, и как Я томлюсь, пока это не совершится! 51 Вы думаете, Я пришёл, чтобы принести на землю мир? Нет, говорю вам, не мир, а разделение. 52 Семья из пяти человек разделится: трое против двоих и двое против троих. 53 Отец будет против сына и сын против отца, мать против дочери и дочь против матери, свекровь против невестки и невестка против свекрови.[b]

54 Иса опять обратился к народу:
– Когда вы видите облако на западе, вы сразу говорите, что будет дождь, и, действительно, идёт дождь. 55 И когда дует южный ветер, вы говорите – будет жарко, и так и бывает. 56 Лицемеры! Вы знаете, что означают приметы земли и неба, так почему же вы не знаете, какое настало время? 57 Почему вы сами не рассудите, в чём истина? 58 Когда ты идёшь со своим обвинителем в суд, постарайся примириться с ним ещё по пути, иначе он притащит тебя к судье, тот отдаст тебя стражнику, а стражник бросит тебя в темницу. 59 Говорю тебе, что ты не выйдешь оттуда, пока не выплатишь всё до самого последнего гроша[c].

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy
12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(A) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(B) “Be on your guard(C) against the leaven[a](D) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(E) 2 There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(F) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(G) 3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(H) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(I)
Fear God
4 “I say to you, my friends,(J) don’t fear(K) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. 5 But I will show you the one to fear: Fear(L) him who has authority to throw people into hell(M) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! 6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[b] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(N) 7 Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Acknowledging Christ
8 “And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges(O) me before others, the Son of Man(P) will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,(Q) 9 but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.(R) 10 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,(S) but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit(T) will not be forgiven. 11 Whenever(U) they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities,(V) don’t worry(W) about how you should defend(X) yourselves or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.”(Y)
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher,(Z) tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 “Friend,”[c] he said to him, “who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 He then told them, “Watch out and be on guard(AA) against all greed,(AB) because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions.”(AC)
16 Then he told them a parable:(AD) “A rich(AE) man’s land was very productive. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops? 18 I will do this,’ he said. ‘I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. 19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy;(AF) eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’(AG)
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(AH) This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’(AI)
21 “That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure(AJ) for himself and is not rich toward God.”(AK)
The Cure for Anxiety
22 Then he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you,(AL) don’t worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.(AM) 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens:(AN) They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them.(AO) Aren’t you worth much more than the birds? 25 Can any of you add one moment to his life span[d] by worrying?(AP) 26 If then you’re not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon(AQ) in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 28 If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you—you of little faith?(AR) 29 Don’t strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious. 30 For the Gentile world eagerly seeks(AS) all these things, and your Father(AT) knows that you need them.
31 “But seek his kingdom,(AU) and these things will be provided for you.(AV) 32 Don’t be afraid,(AW) little flock,(AX) because your Father delights(AY) to give you the kingdom.(AZ) 33 Sell(BA) your possessions and give to the poor.(BB) Make money-bags(BC) for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure(BD) in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(BE)
Ready for the Master’s Return
35 “Be ready for service[e] and have your lamps lit.(BF) 36 You are to be like people waiting for their master(BG) to return from the wedding banquet(BH) so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.(BI) 37 Blessed will be those servants the master finds alert(BJ) when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will get ready,[f] have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.(BK) 38 If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn,[g] and finds them alert, blessed are those servants. 39 But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming,(BL) he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also be ready,(BM) because the Son of Man(BN) is coming at an hour you do not expect.”(BO)
Rewards and Punishment
41 “Lord,” Peter asked, “are you telling this parable to us or to everyone?”
42 The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and sensible manager(BP) his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food(BQ) at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’(BR) and starts to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 that servant’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces[h] and assign him a place with the unfaithful.[i] 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will and didn’t prepare himself or do it[j] will be severely beaten.(BS) 48 But the one who did not know and did what deserved(BT) punishment will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.[k](BU)
Not Peace but Division
49 “I came(BV) to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo,(BW) and how it consumes(BX) me until it is finished!(BY) 51 Do you think that I came here to bring peace on the earth?(BZ) No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.
53 They will be divided, father against son,
son against father,
mother against daughter,
daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law,
and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”[l](CA)
Interpreting the Time
54 He also said to the crowds,(CB) “When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and so it does.(CC) 55 And when the south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites!(CD) You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this present time?(CE)
Settling Accounts
57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?(CF) 58 As you are going with your adversary(CG) to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won’t drag you before the judge,(CH) the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.(CI) 59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.”[m](CJ)

Warnings and Encouragements(A)
12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(B) 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(C) 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4 “I tell you, my friends,(D) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(E) 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(F) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(G)
8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(H) 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(I) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(J) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(K)
11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(L) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(M)
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(N)
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(O) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(P) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(Q)
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(R)
Do Not Worry(S)
22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(T) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[b]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(U) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(V) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(W) knows that you need them.(X) 31 But seek his kingdom,(Y) and these things will be given to you as well.(Z)
32 “Do not be afraid,(AA) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(AB) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(AC) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(AD) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(AE) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(AF)
Watchfulness(AG)(AH)
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(AI) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(AJ) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(AK) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(AL) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 The Lord(AM) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(AN) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(AO) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(AP) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Not Peace but Division(AQ)
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(AR) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(AS) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(AT)
Interpreting the Times
54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(AU) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(AV)
57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(AW) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(AX)
