1 提阿费罗大人哪，既然有许多人着手编录关于在我们中间所成就的事， 2 就是照着从起初以来的目击者和做福音[a]仆人的那些人所传给我们的， 3 我也已经从头仔细地追踪了这一切，我就认为应该按着次序写给您， 4 好让您了解到您所领受的话语都是确实的。
预言约翰诞生
5 在犹太王希律的那些日子里，有一个祭司名叫撒迦利亚，属于亚比雅班组。他的妻子也是亚伦的子孙[b]，名叫伊莉莎白。 6 他们两个人在神面前都是义人，遵行主的一切诫命和公义规定，无可指责。 7 可是他们没有孩子，因为伊莉莎白不能生育，两个人又都上了年纪。
8 有一次，当撒迦利亚的班组轮值的时候，撒迦利亚在神面前履行祭司的职务， 9 照着祭司职务的规矩，抽中了签就进入主的圣所烧香。 10 烧香的时候，全体民众都在外面祷告。 11 有主的一位天使站在香坛的右边向他显现。 12 撒迦利亚看见后，就惊慌不安，恐惧就临到了他。 13 天使对他说：
“撒迦利亚，不要怕，
因为你的祈祷已蒙垂听。

14 他将使你欢喜、快乐，

15 因为他将要在主面前为大。

18 撒迦利亚对天使说：“我凭着什么能知道这事呢？我是个老人，我的妻子也上了年纪。”
19 天使回答他，说：“我是站在神面前的加百列，奉差派来对你说话，向你传达这些好消息。 20 看哪，你要成为哑巴，不能说话，一直到这些事成就的日子，因为你不相信我的话！到了时候，我的话就会应验。”

49 因为那全能者
为我行了大事；
他的名是神圣的。
50 他的怜悯，

撒迦利亚的预言

Prologue
1 Many people have undertaken to draw up an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled in our midst. 2 It has all been handed down to us by the original eyewitnesses and stewards of the word. 3 So, most excellent Theophilus, since I had traced the course of the whole thing scrupulously from the start, I thought it a good idea to write an orderly account for you, 4 so that you may have secure knowledge about the matters in which you have been instructed.
Gabriel visits Zechariah
5 In the time when Herod was king of Judaea, there was a priest called Zechariah, of the priestly division of Abijah. His wife, who came from the Aaron family, was called Elizabeth. 6 Both of them were righteous in God’s sight; they followed all the Lord’s commandments and ordinances without fault. 7 They had no children. Elizabeth was barren, and both of them were of an advanced age.
8 It so happened, when Zechariah was performing his priestly service before God, according to the order of his division, 9 that the lot fell to him, according to the priestly custom, to go in to the Lord’s sanctuary to offer incense. 10 The people were praying outside in a large crowd, at the time of the incense-offering. 11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right hand side of the incense-altar. 12 Zechariah was troubled and terror-struck when he saw the angel.
13 But the angel said to him: “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah: your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 This will bring you joy and celebration, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 He will be a great man in God’s sight; he will drink no wine or strong drink. He will be filled with the holy spirit from his mother’s womb, 16 and will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, and he will turn the hearts of fathers to children, and of unbelievers to the wisdom of the righteous. He will get ready for the Lord a prepared people.”
18 “How can I be sure of this?” said Zechariah to the angel. “I’m an old man! My wife’s not as young as she used to be, either!”
19 “Look here,” replied the angel, “I’m Gabriel. I stand in God’s presence. I was sent to speak to you and give you this splendid news. 20 Now, listen: you will be silent—you won’t be able to speak—until the day when it all happens, because you didn’t believe my words. But they will come true at the proper time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were surprised that he was taking such a long time in the sanctuary. 22 But when he came out he couldn’t speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He made gestures to them, but remained speechless.
23 So, when the days of his priestly service were complete, he went back home. 24 After that time, Elizabeth his wife conceived. She stayed in hiding for five months.
25 “This is the Lord’s doing,” she said; “at last he has looked on me, and taken away my public shame.”
The annunciation of the birth of Jesus
26 In the sixth month, Gabriel (the angel) was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man called Joseph, from the family of David. The virgin was called Mary.
28 “Greetings, favored one!” said the angel when he arrived. “May the Lord be with you!”
29 She was disturbed at this, and wondered what such a greeting might mean.
30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” said the angel to her. “You’re in favor with God. 31 Listen: you will conceive in your womb and will have a son; and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be a great man, and he’ll be called the son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never come to an end.”
34 “How will this happen?” said Mary to the angel. “I’m still a virgin!”
35 “The holy spirit will come upon you,” replied the angel, “and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. For that reason the holy one who is born from you will be called God’s Son.
36 “Let me tell you this, too: your cousin Elizabeth, in her old age, has also conceived a son. This is the sixth month for her, a woman who people used to say was barren. 37 With God, you see, nothing is impossible.”
38 “Here I am,” said Mary; “I’m the Lord’s servant-girl. Let it happen to me as you’ve said.”
Then the angel left her.
The Magnificat: Mary’s song of praise
39 Mary got up then and there, and went in excitement to the hill country of Judaea. 40 She went into Zechariah’s house, and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby gave a leap in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the holy spirit, 42 and shouted at the top of her voice: “Of all women, you’re the blessed one! And the fruit of your womb—he’s blessed, too! 43 Why should this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 Look—when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the child in my womb gave a great leap for joy! 45 A blessing on you, for believing that what the Lord said to you would come true!”
46 Mary said,
“My soul declares that the Lord is great,
47 my spirit exults in my savior, my God.
48 He saw his servant-girl in her humility;
from now, I’ll be blessed by all peoples to come.
49 The Powerful One, whose name is Holy,
has done great things for me, for me.
50 His mercy extends from father to son,
from mother to daughter for those who fear him.
51 Powerful things he has done with his arm:
he routed the arrogant through their own cunning.
52 Down from their thrones he hurled the rulers,
up from the earth he raised the humble.
53 The hungry he filled with the fat of the land,
but the rich he sent off with nothing to eat.
54 He has rescued his servant, Israel his child,
because he remembered his mercy of old,
55 just as he said to our long-ago ancestors—
Abraham and his descendants forever.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, and then returned home.
Zechariah’s song of praise
57 The time arrived for Elizabeth’s child to be born, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had increased his mercy to her, and they came to celebrate with her.
59 Now on the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were calling him by his father’s name, Zechariah. 60 But his mother spoke up.
“No,” she said, “he is to be called John.”
61 “None of your relatives,” they objected, “is called by that name.”
62 They made signs to his father, to ask what he wanted him to be called. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote on it, “His name is John.”
Everyone was astonished. 64 Immediately his mouth and his tongue were unfastened, and he spoke, praising God. 65 Fear came over all those who lived in the neighborhood, and people spoke of all these things throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 66 Everyone who heard about it turned the matter over in their hearts.
“What then will this child become?” they said. And the Lord’s hand was with him.
67 John’s father Zechariah was filled with the holy spirit, and spoke this prophecy:
68 “Blessed be the Lord, Israel’s God!
He’s come to his people and bought them their freedom.
69 He’s raised up a horn of salvation for us
in David’s house, the house of his servant,
70 just as he promised, through the mouths of his prophets,
the holy ones, speaking from ages of old:
71 salvation from our enemies, rescue from hatred,
72 mercy to our ancestors, keeping his holy covenant.
73 He swore an oath to Abraham our father,
74 to give us deliverance from fear and from foes,
so we might worship him, 75 holy and righteous
before his face to the end of our days.
76 You, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest One,
You’ll go before the Lord, preparing his way,
77 letting his people know of salvation,
through the forgiveness of all their sins.
78 The heart of our God is full of mercy,
that’s why his daylight has dawned from on high,
79 bringing light to the dark, as we sat in death’s shadow,
guiding our feet in the path of peace.”
80 The child grew, and became powerful in the spirit. He lived in the wilderness until the day when he was revealed to Israel.

1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

19 Ангел ответил:
– Я – Джабраил, стоящий перед Всевышним, и я послан, чтобы сообщить тебе эту радостную весть. 20 Но сейчас, за то, что ты не поверил моим словам, которые обязательно исполнятся в своё время, ты лишишься дара речи и не будешь говорить до того дня, пока это не сбудется.
21 Между тем люди ждали Закарию и удивлялись, почему он так долго не выходит из храма. 22 Когда Закария вышел, он не мог говорить и вынужден был общаться с ними жестами. Все поняли, что в храме ему было видение.
23 Когда срок его служения закончился, Закария возвратился домой. 24 Вскоре его жена Элишева забеременела и пять месяцев не выходила из дома. 25 Она говорила:
– Вот что сделал для меня Вечный, по милости Своей сняв с меня позор перед людьми!
Предсказание о рождении Исы Масиха
26 Когда Элишева была на шестом месяце беременности, Всевышний послал ангела Джабраила в галилейский город Назарет 27 к непорочной девушке по имени Марьям. Марьям была обручена с Юсуфом, потомком царя Давуда. 28 Ангел пришёл к ней и сказал:
– Приветствую тебя, получившая милость! С тобой Вечный!
29 Марьям эти слова очень удивили, и она размышляла, что бы значило такое приветствие. 30 Ангел продолжал:
– Не бойся, Марьям, потому что Всевышний проявил к тебе милость! 31 Ты забеременеешь, и родишь сына, и назовёшь Его Иса[g]. 32 Он станет великим, и Его будут называть Сыном Высочайшего (Царственным Спасителем)[h]. Вечный Бог даст Ему престол Его предка Давуда, 33 и Он будет царствовать над потомками Якуба вовеки, и Его Царству не будет конца.
34 – Как это может быть? – спросила Марьям. – Ведь я ещё не была с мужчиной.
35 Ангел ответил:
– Святой Дух сойдёт на тебя, и, как тень, найдёт на тебя сила Высочайшего. Поэтому ребёнка, который родится у тебя, будут называть «Святой», а также «Сын Всевышнего».[i] 36 Вот и твоя родственница Элишева тоже родит сына в её преклонные годы. О ней говорили, что она бесплодна, но она уже на шестом месяце беременности. 37 Для Всевышнего нет ничего невозможного.
38 – Я рабыня Вечного, – ответила Марьям, – пусть всё произойдёт со мной так, как ты сказал.
И ангел оставил её.
Марьям навещает Элишеву
39 Вскоре после этого Марьям собралась и поспешила в город, расположенный в нагорьях Иудеи. 40 Она вошла в дом Закарии и поприветствовала Элишеву. 41 Когда Элишева услышала приветствие Марьям, ребёнок внутри у неё встрепенулся; Элишева исполнилась Святого Духа 42 и воскликнула громким голосом:
– Благословенна ты среди женщин, и благословен ребёнок, которого ты носишь! 43 Чем я заслужила такую милость, что ко мне пришла мать моего Повелителя? 44 Как только я услышала твоё приветствие, ребёнок во мне так и встрепенулся от радости. 45 Благословенна поверившая в исполнение того, что сказал Вечный!
Марьям прославляет Вечного
46 Марьям ответила:
– Душа моя славит Вечного,
47 и дух мой радуется о Всевышнем, Спасителе моём,
48 потому что Он обратил внимание
на меня, Свою скромную рабыню.[j]
Отныне все поколения будут называть меня благословенной,
49 потому что Всемогущий совершил такое великое дело для меня!
Его имя свято!
50 Из поколения в поколение
Он проявляет милость к боящимся Его![k]
51 Его рукой совершены великие дела:
Он рассеял гордых в надмении сердца их,
52 сверг правителей с их престолов
и возвысил смиренных!
53 Он насытил благами голодных,
а богатых отослал ни с чем.
54-55 Он помог Своему рабу Исраилу,
помня Своё обещание нашим предкам –
быть милосердным к Ибрахиму
и его потомкам вовеки.
56 Марьям погостила у Элишевы около трёх месяцев и затем возвратилась домой.
Рождение, наречение имени и обрезание пророка Яхии
57 Когда подошло время, Элишева родила сына. 58 Её соседи и родственники услышали о том, что Вечный явил ей великую милость, и радовались вместе с ней. 59 На восьмой день они пришли, чтобы совершить над ребёнком обряд обрезания,[l] и хотели назвать его в честь отца Закарией. 60 Но мать ребёнка возразила:
– Нет! Его будут звать Яхия.
61 Ей стали говорить:
– Но ведь среди ваших родственников нет никого с таким именем!
62 Они стали жестами спрашивать отца, как бы он хотел назвать сына. 63 Закария попросил табличку для письма и, к удивлению всех, написал: «Его имя Яхия».
64 В тот же миг к нему вернулась речь, и он начал говорить, прославляя Всевышнего. 65 Всех соседей объял страх, и весть о случившемся разнеслась по всем нагорьям Иудеи. 66 Все, кто слышал об этом, с удивлением спрашивали:
– Кем же станет этот ребёнок? – потому что сила Вечного была с ним.
Пророческое слово Закарии
67 Закария, отец Яхии, исполнился Святого Духа и начал пророчествовать:
68 – Хвала Вечному, Богу Исраила,[m]
Который посетил Свой народ и дал ему избавление!
69 Он воздвиг нам могучего Спасителя[n]
из рода Своего раба Давуда,
70 как Он издавна обещал через Своих святых пророков,
71 что Он спасёт нас от врагов
и от рук тех, кто ненавидит нас.
72 Так Он проявил милость к нашим предкам,
помня Своё священное соглашение,
73 клятву, которой Он поклялся нашему предку Ибрахиму:
74 избавить нас от рук наших врагов,
чтобы мы могли без страха служить Ему,
75 живя перед Ним в святости и праведности во все дни нашей жизни!
76 И ты, дитя, будешь назван пророком Высочайшего,
потому что будешь идти перед Вечным, Повелителем Сил, чтобы приготовить Ему пути,[o]
77 возвестить Его народу спасение
через прощение грехов,
78 по глубочайшему милосердию нашего Бога,
Который пошлёт нам Утреннюю Зарю с небес[p],
79 чтобы дать свет живущим во тьме и тени смертной[q]
и направить наши стопы на путь мира!
80 Ребёнок рос и укреплялся в духе. Он жил в пустыне до того времени, когда открыто явился Исраилу.
