1 尊敬的提阿非羅先生，因為有許多人，已經把在我們中間成就了的事， 2 按照起初親眼看見的傳道人所傳給我們的，編著成書； 3 我已經把這些事從頭考查過，認為也應該按著次序寫給你， 4 讓你曉得所學到的道理，都是確實的。
天使預言施洗約翰出生
5 猶太王希律在位的日子，亞比雅班裡有一個祭司，名叫撒迦利亞，他妻子是亞倫的後代，名叫以利沙伯。 6 他們在 神面前都是義人，遵行主的一切誡命規條，無可指摘， 7 只是沒有孩子，因為以利沙伯不生育，二人又都上了年紀。
8 有一次，撒迦利亞在 神面前按著班次執行祭司的職務， 9 照祭司的慣例抽中了籤，進入主的聖殿燒香。 10 燒香的時候，眾人都在外面祈禱。 11 有主的使者站在香壇右邊，向他顯現。 12 撒迦利亞一見就驚慌起來，十分害怕。 13 天使說：“撒迦利亞，不要怕，因為你的祈求已蒙垂聽，你妻子以利沙伯要給你生一個兒子，你要給他起名叫約翰。 14 你必歡喜快樂，許多人因他出生，也必喜樂。 15 他在主面前要被尊為大，淡酒濃酒都不喝，未出母腹就被聖靈充滿。 16 他要使許多以色列人轉向主他們的 神。 17 他必有以利亞的靈和能力，行在主的前面，叫父親的心轉向兒女，叫悖逆的轉向義人的意念，為主安排那預備好了的人民。” 18 撒迦利亞對天使說：“我怎麼能知道這事呢？我已經老了，我妻子也上了年紀。” 19 天使回答：“我是站在 神面前的加百列，奉差遣向你說話，報給你這好消息。 20 看吧！到了時候我的話必要應驗；因為你不信我的話，你必成為啞巴，直到這些事成就的那一天，才能說話。”
21 眾人等候撒迦利亞；因他在聖殿裡遲遲不出來，覺得奇怪。 22 等到他出來，卻不能講話，竟成了啞巴，不斷地向他們打手式，他們就知道他在聖殿裡見了異象。 23 供職的日子滿了，他就回家去。 24 過了幾天，他妻子以利沙伯懷了孕，隱藏了五個月，說： 25 “主在眷顧的日子，這樣看待我，要把我在人間的羞恥除掉。”
天使預言耶穌降生
26 到了第六個月，天使加百列奉 神差遣，往加利利的拿撒勒城去， 27 到了一個童貞女那裡，她已經和大衛家一個名叫約瑟的人訂了婚，童貞女的名字是馬利亞。 28 天使進去，對她說：“恭喜！蒙大恩的女子，主與你同在！” 29 她卻因這話驚慌起來，反覆思想這樣祝賀是甚麼意思。 30 天使說：“馬利亞，不要怕！因你已從 神那裡蒙了恩。 31 你將懷孕生子，要給他起名叫耶穌。 32 他將要被尊為大，稱為至高者的兒子，主 神要把他祖大衛的王位賜給他， 33 他要作王統治雅各家，直到永遠，他的國沒有窮盡。” 34 馬利亞對天使說：“我還沒有出嫁（“我還沒有出嫁”原文作“我不認識男人”），怎能有這事呢？” 35 天使回答：“聖靈要臨到你，至高者的能力要覆庇你，因此那將要出生的聖者，必稱為 神的兒子。 36 你看，你親戚以利沙伯，被稱為不生育的，在老年也懷了男胎，現在已是第六個月了， 37 因為在 神沒有一件事是不可能的。” 38 馬利亞說：“我是主的婢女，願照你的話成就在我身上！”天使就離開她去了。

39 後來，馬利亞就起身，急忙向山地去，來到猶大的一座城， 40 進了撒迦利亞的家，向以利沙伯問安。 41 以利沙伯一聽見馬利亞的問安，腹中的胎兒就跳動，以利沙伯也被聖靈充滿， 42 就高聲說：“你在女子中是有福的！你腹中的胎兒也是有福的！ 43 我主的母親竟然到我這裡來。這事怎會臨到我呢？ 44 你看，你問安的聲音一進我的耳朵，我腹中的胎兒就歡喜跳躍。 45 這相信主傳給她的話必要成就的女子是有福的。”
馬利亞尊主為大（參(B)
46 馬利亞說：
“我心尊主為大，
47 我靈以 神我的救主為樂，
48 因為他垂顧他婢女的卑微，
看哪！今後萬代都要稱我為有福。
49 全能者為我行了大事，他的名為聖；
50 他的憐憫世世代代歸與敬畏他的人。
51 他用膀臂施展大能，
驅散心裡妄想的狂傲人。
52 他使有權能的失位，
叫卑微的升高，
53 讓飢餓的得飽美食，
使富足的空手回去。
54 他扶助了他的僕人以色列，
為要記念他的憐憫，
55 正如他向我們列祖所說的，

56 馬利亞和以利沙伯同住約有三個月，就回家去了。
施洗約翰出生

撒迦利亞的預言
67 他的父親撒迦利亞被聖靈充滿，預言說：
68 “主，以色列的 神，是應當稱頌的，
因他眷顧自己的子民，施行救贖，
69 在他僕人大衛家中，
為我們興起救恩的角，
70 正如主自古以來藉聖先知口中所說的，
71 救我們脫離仇敵，和恨我們的人的手；
72 向我們列祖施憐憫，記念他的聖約，
73 就是他對我們祖先亞伯拉罕所起的誓，
74 把我們從仇敵手中救拔出來，
叫我們可以坦然無懼，用聖潔公義，
75 在他面前一生一世敬拜他。
76 孩子啊，你要稱為至高者的先知，
因為你要行在主的面前，預備他的路，
77 使他的子民，因罪得赦，就知道救恩。
78 因我們 神的憐憫，
使清晨的陽光從高天臨到我們，
79 光照那坐在黑暗中死蔭裡的人，
引導我們的腳，走上平安的路。”

1 प्रिय थियोफिलस:
किनभने धेरै मानिसहरूले हाम्रा बीचमा घटेका घट्नाहरूको बिषयमा इतिहास लेख्ने चेष्टा गरेका छन्। 2 तिनीहरूले ती कुराहरू नै लेखेका छन् जुन कुराहरू शुरूदेखि नै हामीलाई ती मानिसहरू जो साक्षीहरू र परमेश्वरका संदेशको सेवकहरूले बताउँदै आएका छन्। 3 हे माननीय म आफैंले शुरूदेखि नै होशियार साथ सबै कुराहरूको अध्ययन गरेको छु। त्यसैले, मैले सोचें मैले पनि तिमाहरूको लागि क्रमानुसार यी कुराहरू लेख्नै पर्छ। यसैले, मैले 4 तिमीहरूलाई बुझाउनको लागि जुन तिमीहरूले सिकेकाछौ त्यही कुराहरू नै सत्य हो भन्न, मैले यी कुराहरू लेखेको छु।

5 यहूदामा हेरोदको शासन कालमा जकरिया नाउँ गरेका एकजना पूजाहारी थिए। जकरिया अबियाका पूजाहारी समूहका थिए। जकरियाकी पत्नी हारून वंशकी थिईन्। तिनको नाउँ इलीशिबा थियो। 6 ती दुवै जकरिया र इलीशिबा परमेश्वर समक्ष असल मानिस थिए। जहाँ सम्म परमप्रभुको जम्मै आज्ञा र नियमहरूको सम्बन्ध छ तिनीहरू निष्कलंक थिए। 7 तर जकरिया र इलीशिबा निःसन्तान थिए। इलीशिबा गर्भवती हुन सकिनन्, कारण तिनीहरू दुवै बृद्ध भइसकेका थिए।
8 जब उनको समूहको सेवा गर्ने पालो थियो जकरियाले परमेश्वर अघि मानिसहरूको सेवा पूजाहारी भएर गरे। यस्तै उनको समूहको सेवा गर्ने समय थियो। 9 पूजाहारीहरूले सधैँ एकजना पूजाहारीलाई धूप दिने गर्दथे। जकरिया यस्तै काम गर्ने छानिएको थिए। यसकारण उनले परमप्रभुको मन्दिरमा धूप जनाउनु पर्थ्यो। 10 त्यहाँ जम्मै उपासकहरू बाहिर एकत्रित भएका थिए। धूप दिइएकै बेला तिनीहरू प्रार्थना गर्नमा तल्लीन थिए।
11 त्यसपछि धूप जलिरहेको दाहिनेपट्टि परमप्रभुको एउटा स्वर्गदूत जकरियाको अघि उभिएका थिए। 12 जब उनले स्वर्गदूतलाई देख्यो, जकरिया भ्रममा परे र डरले आत्तिए। 13 ती स्वर्गदूतले जकरियालाई भने, “जकरिया, नडराऊ। तिम्रो प्रार्थनालाई परमेश्वरले सुनिदिनु भएकोछ। तिम्री पत्नी इलीशिबाले एउटा पुत्र जन्म दिनेछिन्। उनको नाउँ तिमीले यूहन्ना राखिदिनु। 14 तिनले तिमीहरूमा आनन्द र खुशीयाली ल्याउनेछन्। तिनको जन्मले धेरै-धेरै मानिसहरूमा सुख ल्याउनेछ। 15 परमप्रभुको सामुन्ने यूहन्ना तिनी एकजना महान मानिस बनिनेछन्। तिनले दाखरस अथवा मदिरा कदापि लिने छैनन्। तिनको जन्मबाट नै तिनी पवित्र आत्माले भरिएको हुनेछन्।
16 “तिनी धेरै यहूदीहरूलाई परमप्रभु तिनीहरूका परमेश्वरतिर फर्काउने माध्यम हुनेछन्। 17 तिनी आफैं अग्रदूत झैं परमप्रभुको अघि अघि जानेछन्। एलिया जस्तै तिनी पनि शक्ति सम्पन्न मानिस हुनेछन्। एलियामा भएकै आत्मा उनमा पनि हुनेछ। बाबुहरू र छोरा-छोरीहरू माझ उनले नै शान्ति बनाई राख्नेछन्। तिनीहरू जसले परमेश्वरको आज्ञा पालन गर्दैनन् त्यस्ताहरूलाई धार्मिक मानिसहरूलाई जस्तै सोंच्ने बानउनेछन्। परमप्रभुको आगमनका निम्ति मानिसहरूलाई उनले नै तयारी पार्नेछन्।”
18 जकरियाले स्वर्गदूतलाई भने, “यो कुरा साँच्चो हो भनेर म कसरी निश्चित हुनु? म एउटा बूढो मानिस हुँ, अनि मेरी पत्नी पनि बुढी नै छिन्?”
19 ती स्वर्गदूतले जवाफ दिए, “म गाब्रिएल हुँ। म परमेश्वरको अघि खड़ा रहन्छु। परमेश्वरले नै मलाई तिमीसित कुरागर्न र यिनै खुशीको सुसमाचार दिन पठाउनु भएको हो। 20 अब सुन। यी कुराहरू पूरा नहुन्जेल सम्म तिमी लाटो हुनेछौ र बोल्न सक्नेछैनौ। किनभने मैले भनेको कुराहरू जो आफ्नो समयमा सत्य हुनेछ तिमीले विश्वास गरेका छैनौ।”
21 बाहिरपट्टि, मानिसहरूले जकरियालाई पर्खिरहेका थिए। मन्दिरमा यति लामो समय सम्म बसेको देखेर तिनीहरू छक्क परिरहेका थिए। 22 त्यसपछि जकरिया बाहिर आए, तर उनी बोल्न नसक्ने भएका थिए। उनी ती मानिसहरूका अघि देखा मात्र पर्न सक्थे। तब तिनीहरूले उनले मन्दिरभित्र केही दर्शन पाएको चाल पाए। उनले तिनीहरूसित इशारा मात्र गरिरहे अनि लाटा झैं बसिरहे। 23 जब जकरियाको सेवाको दिन पूरा भयो, तिनी आफ्नो घरतिर लागे।
24 केही समय पछि जकरियाको पत्नी इलीशिबा गर्भवती भइन्। अनि पाँच महीनासम्म उनी घरदेखि बाहिर निस्किनन्। इलीशिबाले भनिन्, 25 “हेर, मलाई परमप्रभुले के गर्नुभएको छ। उहाँले मेरो एउटा नानी जन्मियोस् भनी निर्णय लिनु भयो। परमप्रभुले ममाथि यति कृपा गर्नु भयो कि अब उसो मानिसहरूको सामुन्नेबाट मलाई लाज मुक्त पार्नु भयो।”
कन्या मरियम
26-27 इलीशिबाको छैटौं महीनामा, गालीको एउटा शहर नासरतमा बस्ने एउटी कन्याकहाँ परमेश्वरले एउटा गाब्रिएल नाउँ गरेको दूतलाई पठाउनु भयो। तिनी दाऊदको परिवारको यूसुफ नाउँ गरेको एक मानिससँग मगनी भएकी थिइन्। ती कन्याको नाउँ मरियम थियो। 28 ती स्वर्गदूत मरियमकहाँ गए अनि भने, “शुभकामना छ। परमप्रभु तिमीसितै हुनुहुन्छ। तिमी उहाँको खुवै प्रिय छौ।”
29 तर त्यो स्वर्गदूतले भनेका यी कुराहरूमा मरियम खुबै विचलित भइन्। मरियम छक्क परिन् र भनिन् “यो अभिवादन को अर्थ के हो?”
30 ती दूतले उनलाई भने, “डराउनु पर्दैन मरियम, किनभने परमेश्वर तिमीसित अत्यन्त खुशी हुनुहुन्छ। 31 सुन! तिमी गर्भवती हुनेछौ अनि तिमीले एउटा छोरो जन्माउनेछौ। अनि उहाँको नाउँ तिमीले येशू राख्नु। 32 उहाँ महान् हुनुहुनेछ र सर्वोच्च परमेश्वरका पुत्र कहलाईनु हुनेछ। परमप्रभु परमेश्वरले उहाँलाई उहाँको पुर्खा दाऊदको सिंहासन दिनुहुनेछ। 33 उहाँले याकूबका घरानामाथि सधैँका लागि शासन गर्नुहुनेछ। येशूको राज्यको अन्त्य कहिल्यै हुनेछैन।”
34 मरियमले ती स्वर्गदूतलाई भनिन्, “म कन्या नै छु, यस्तो कसरी हुन सक्छ?”
35 ती स्वर्गदूतले मरियमलाई भने, “पवित्र आत्मा तिमीमाथि आउनुहुनेछ अनि सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वरको शक्तिले तिमीलाई ढाक्नेछ। यसकारणले जो जन्मनुहुन्छ उहाँ परमेश्वरको पुत्र कहलाइनु हुनेछ। 36 यस विषयमा ध्यान देऊः तिम्रो आफन्त इलीशिबा पनि गर्भवती छिन् तिनको अवस्था वृद्ध अनि बाँझी कहलाइएता पनि अहिले तिनी छ महीनाबाट गर्भवती भएकी छिन्। 37 किनभने परमेश्वरमा जे कुरा पनि सम्भव छ।”
38 मरियमले भनिन् “म परमप्रभुकी दासी हुँ। तपाईंले भने जस्तो ममाथि हुनदिनुहोस्।” त्यसपछि दूत उनीबाट विदा भए।
जकरिया र इलीशिबासँग मरियमको भ्रमण
39 लगत्तै मरियम तयारी भइन् अनि यहूदिया गाउँको पहाडी शहरमा हत्तारिएर गईन्। 40 तिनी जकरियाको घरमा गईन् अनि इलीशिबालाई शुभकामना दिईन्। 41 जब इलीशिबाले मरियमको शुभकामना सुनिन्, तब तिनको गर्भको नानी उफ्रियो। अनि इलीशिबा पवित्र आत्माद्वारा भरिपूर्ण भइन्।
42 तिनले जोरले चिच्याएर भनीन्, “अरू स्त्रीहरूलाई भन्दा परमेश्वरले तिमीलाई धेरै आशीर्वाद दिनुभएकोछ। अनि गर्भमा रहेको नानी पनि त्यस्तै अनुग्रहित छ। 43 यस्तो कसरी हुन सक्यो कि मेरा परमप्रभुकि आमा मेरोमा आउनु पर्यो? 44 जब मैले तिम्रो अभिवादन सुने, मेरो गर्भमा भएको बालक हर्षले उफ्रियो। 45 तिमीलाई आशीर्वाद छ किनभने परमप्रभुले तिमीलाई भन्नु भएको कुरा पूरा हुनेछ भन्ने तिमीमा विश्वास थियो।”
मरियमद्वार परमेश्वरको प्रशंसा
46 त्यसपछि मरियमले भनिन्,
47 “मेरो आत्माले परमप्रभुको प्रशंसा गर्दछ,
अनि मेरो हृदय परमेश्वरमा आनन्दित हुँदछ जो मेरा मुक्तिदाता हुनुहुन्छ।
48 किनभने उहाँले आफ्नो दीन दासी प्रति कृपा गर्नु भयो।
अब उप्रान्त सबै मानसहरूले मलाई अनुग्रहित मान्नेछन्,
49 किनभने सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वरले मेरो निम्ति ठूला कार्याहरू गर्नुभएको छ।
उहाँको नाउँ पवित्र होस्।
50 जसले परमेश्वरलाई उपासना गर्छ,
उसको पुस्तौं सम्म उहाँ दयालु हुनुहुन्छ।
51 उहाँले आफ्नो बाहुबलद्वारा शक्ति प्रदर्शन गर्नु भएकोछ।
उहाँले घमण्डीहरूलाई तिनीहरूको धनहरूको घमण्ड नष्ट गरिदिनु भएकोछ।
52 उहाँले शक्तिशाली शासकहरूलाई सिंहासनबाट हटाउनुभएको छ,
अनि नम्रहरूलाई उचाल्नु भएकोछ।
53 उहाँले भोकाहरूलाई असल खाद्यहरूले तृप्त पार्नु भएकोछ,
तर स्वार्थी र धनीहरूलाई रित्तै हात पठाई दिनु भएकोछ।
54 उहाँ आफ्नो दास इस्राएललाई सहायता गर्न आउनु भएकोछ।
उहाँले हामीलाई उहाँको कृपा दिनु भएकोछ।
55 उहाँले अब्राहाम र उनका सन्तानलाई दया गर्न,
हाम्रा पुर्खाहरूलाई दिएको वचन अनुसार सम्झनु भयो।”
56 मरियम इलीशिबासँग प्रायः तीन महीनासम्म बसिन्। त्यसपछि घर फर्किन्।
यूहन्नाको जन्म
57 इलीशिबाको सुत्केरी हुने समय भयो अनि तिनले एउटा छोरो जन्माइन्। 58 तिनका छिमेकीहरू र आफन्तहरूले तिनीप्रति परमप्रभु परमेश्वरले अति नै अनुग्रह देखाएको सुनेका थिए। तिनीहरू मरियमसँग खुशी थिए।
59 बालक आठ दिनको भएपछि तिनीहरू उसको खतना गर्न आए। तिनीहरूले उसको नाउँ जकरिया राख्न चाहान्थे किनभने यो उसकै बाबुको नाउँ थियो। 60 तर उसकी आमाले भनिन्, “होइन, उसको नाउँ यूहन्ना हुनेछ।”
61 मानसहरूले इलीशिबालाई भने, “तर तिमीहरूको परिवारमा यस्तो नाउँ भएको कोही छैन।” 62 त्यसपछि तिनीहरूले तिनका बाबुलाई संकेत गरे, “तिमीले यसको नाउँ के राख्ने इच्छा गरेका छौ?” भनिसोधे।
63 जकरियाले केही लेख्न पाटी माँगे। तब उसले लेखिदिए, “उसको नाउँ यहून्ना हो।” तिनीहरू छक्क परे। 64 त्यही बेला जकरियाको मुख खोलियो। उसको जिब्रो फुट्यो अनि उनी बोल्न थाले। उनले परमेश्वरको प्रशंसा गरे। 65 अनि उनको सबै छिमेकीहरू डराए। यहूदियाको पहाडी क्षेत्रका बासिन्दाहरू यस विषयमा कुराहरू गर्न थाले। 66 जम्मै मानिसहरू ज-जसले यी कुराहरू सुने तिनीहरू निकै प्रभावित भए “यो केटो पछि के बनिन्छ होला भनेर सोच्न थाले?” परमप्रभु त्यस बालकसित हुनाले त्यस्तो सोचिएको थियो।
जकरियाद्वारा परमेश्वरको प्रशंसा
67 त्यसपछि यूहन्नाको बाबु जकरियामा पवित्र आत्मा आउनु भयो। अनि तिनले यस्तो अगमवाणी दिन थालेः
68 “इस्राएलका परमप्रभु परमेश्वरको प्रशंसा गर।
कारण उहाँले आफ्ना मानिसहरूलाई सहायता गर्नु भयो,
अनि तिनीहरूलाई स्वतन्त्रता दिनुभयो।
69 परमेश्वरकै सेवक दाऊदका बंशबाट
उहाँले हामीलाई शक्तिशाली मुक्तिदाता दिनु भएको छ।
70 उहाँले भन्नु भएको थियो कि उहाँले यी सब गर्नु हुनेछ।
धेरै अघिनै उहाँका पवित्र अगमवक्ताहरूबाट उहाँले यी सब कुराहरू भन्नु भएको हो।
71 उहाले हामीलाई शत्रुहरूदेखि,
अनि हामीलाई घृणागर्ने शक्तिहरूदेखि जोगाउनु भएको छ।
72 उहाँले हाम्रा पुर्खाहरूलाई दया गर्नेछु भन्नु भएकोछ।
उहाँले पवित्र करार पनि स्मरण गर्नु भएकोछ।
73 उहाँले हाम्रा पुर्खा अब्राहामको अघि शपथ खानु भएको थियो की
74 उहाँले हामीलाई हाम्रो शत्रुहरूको पन्जाबाट स्वतन्त्र राख्ने शपथ लिनु भएकोछ,
औ हामीलाई निर्भयपूर्वक उहाँको सेवामा राख्नु हुनेछ।
75 जब सम्म हामी जीवित रहन्छौ हामी पवित्र अनि परमेश्वर अघि सही मार्गमा रहनेछौं।
76 “ए बालक, अब तिमी, महा-महिमाको अगमवक्ता कहलाइनेछौ।
उहाँको आगमनको मार्ग तयारी पार्न तिमी सर्वप्रथम परमेश्वरको अघि जानेछौ।
77 तिमीले उहाँका मानिसहरूलाई तिनीहरूको पापहरूबाट क्षमा पाएर कसरी बाँच्ने त्यो बुझाउनेछौ।
78 “परमेश्वरको प्रेमपूर्ण करूणा पाएर,
हामीमा स्वर्गबाट एउटा नयाँ उज्यालो ज्योति चम्कनेछ।
79 उहाँले अन्धकारमा बसेका, मृत्युको डरमा परेकाहरूलाई मद्दत गर्नु हुनेछ।
उहाँले हामीलाई शान्तिको मार्गतिर पथ-प्रदर्शन गर्नु हुनेछ।”
80 यसरी नै ती बालक बढ्दै गए र आत्मामा शक्तिमान हुँदै गए। जबसम्म इस्राएलमा मानिसहरूलाई शिक्षा दिन तिनी आएनन् त्यत्तिबेला सम्म यूहन्ना मानिसहरूदेखि टाडा भएर बसे।

Several biographies of Christ have already been written using as their source material the reports circulating among us from the early disciples and other eyewitnesses. 3 However, it occurred to me that it would be well to recheck all these accounts from first to last and after thorough investigation to pass this summary on to you,[b] 4 to reassure you of the truth of all you were taught.
5 My story begins with a Jewish priest, Zacharias, who lived when Herod was king of Judea. Zacharias was a member of the Abijah division of the Temple service corps. (His wife, Elizabeth, was, like himself, a member of the priest tribe of the Jews, a descendant of Aaron.) 6 Zacharias and Elizabeth were godly folk, careful to obey all of God’s laws in spirit as well as in letter. 7 But they had no children, for Elizabeth was barren; and now they were both very old.
8-9 One day as Zacharias was going about his work in the Temple—for his division was on duty that week—the honor fell to him by lot[c] to enter the inner sanctuary and burn incense before the Lord. 10 Meanwhile, a great crowd stood outside in the Temple court, praying as they always did during that part of the service when the incense was being burned.
11-12 Zacharias was in the sanctuary when suddenly an angel appeared, standing to the right of the altar of incense! Zacharias was startled and terrified.
13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias! For I have come to tell you that God has heard your prayer, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son! And you are to name him John. 14 You will both have great joy and gladness at his birth, and many will rejoice with you. 15 For he will be one of the Lord’s great men. He must never touch wine or hard liquor—and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from before his birth! 16 And he will persuade many a Jew to turn to the Lord his God. 17 He will be a man of rugged[d] spirit and power like Elijah, the prophet of old; and he will precede the coming of the Messiah, preparing the people for his arrival. He will soften adult hearts to become like little children’s, and will change disobedient minds to the wisdom of faith.”
18 Zacharias said to the angel, “But this is impossible! I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.”
19 Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to you with this good news! 20 And now, because you haven’t believed me, you are to be stricken silent, unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly come true at the proper time.”
21 Meanwhile the crowds outside were waiting for Zacharias to appear and wondered why he was taking so long. 22 When he finally came out, he couldn’t speak to them, and they realized from his gestures that he must have seen a vision in the Temple. 23 He stayed on at the Temple for the remaining days of his Temple duties and then returned home. 24 Soon afterwards Elizabeth his wife became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months.
25 “How kind the Lord is,” she exclaimed, “to take away my disgrace of having no children!”
26 The following month God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin, Mary, engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.
28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Congratulations, favored lady! The Lord is with you!”[e]
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.
30 “Don’t be frightened, Mary,” the angel told her, “for God has decided to wonderfully bless you! 31 Very soon now, you will become pregnant and have a baby boy, and you are to name him ‘Jesus.’ 32 He shall be very great and shall be called the Son of God. And the Lord God shall give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he shall reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom shall never end!”
34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin.”
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of God shall overshadow you; so the baby born to you will be utterly holy—the Son of God. 36 Furthermore, six months ago your Aunt[f] Elizabeth—‘the barren one,’ they called her—became pregnant in her old age! 37 For every promise from God shall surely come true.”
38 Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to do whatever he wants. May everything you said come true.” And then the angel disappeared.
39-40 A few days later Mary hurried to the highlands of Judea to the town where Zacharias lived, to visit Elizabeth.
41 At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 She gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “You are favored by God above all other women, and your child is destined for God’s mightiest praise. 43 What an honor this is, that the mother of my Lord should visit me! 44 When you came in and greeted me, the instant I heard your voice, my baby moved in me for joy! 45 You believed that God would do what he said; that is why he has given you this wonderful blessing.”
46 Mary responded, “Oh, how I praise the Lord. 47 How I rejoice in God my Savior! 48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and now generation after generation forever shall call me blest of God. 49 For he, the mighty Holy One, has done great things to me. 50 His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who reverence him.
51 “How powerful is his mighty arm! How he scatters the proud and haughty ones! 52 He has torn princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry hearts and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54 And how he has helped his servant Israel! He has not forgotten his promise to be merciful. 55 For he promised our fathers—Abraham and his children—to be merciful to them forever.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back to her own home.
57 By now Elizabeth’s waiting was over, for the time had come for the baby to be born—and it was a boy. 58 The word spread quickly to her neighbors and relatives of how kind the Lord had been to her, and everyone rejoiced.
59 When the baby was eight days old, all the relatives and friends came for the circumcision ceremony. They all assumed the baby’s name would be Zacharias, after his father.
60 But Elizabeth said, “No! He must be named John!”
61 “What?” they exclaimed. “There is no one in all your family by that name.” 62 So they asked the baby’s father, talking to him by gestures.[g]
63 He motioned for a piece of paper and to everyone’s surprise wrote, “His name is John!” 64 Instantly Zacharias could speak again, and he began praising God.
65 Wonder fell upon the whole neighborhood, and the news of what had happened spread through the Judean hills. 66 And everyone who heard about it thought long thoughts and asked, “I wonder what this child will turn out to be? For the hand of the Lord is surely upon him in some special way.”
67 Then his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
68 “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to visit his people and has redeemed them. 69 He is sending us a Mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, 70 just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago— 71 someone to save us from our enemies, from all who hate us.
72-73 “He has been merciful to our ancestors, yes, to Abraham himself, by remembering his sacred promise to him, 74 and by granting us the privilege of serving God fearlessly, freed from our enemies, 75 and by making us holy and acceptable, ready to stand in his presence forever.
76 “And you, my little son, shall be called the prophet of the glorious God, for you will prepare the way for the Messiah. 77 You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. 78 All this will be because the mercy of our God is very tender, and heaven’s dawn is about to break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow, and to guide us to the path of peace.”
80 The little boy greatly loved God[h] and when he grew up he lived out in the lonely wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.
