Psalm 9
1 Voor de leider van het koor. Een lied van David, op de wijs van: 'De dood van de zoon'.
2 Heer, ik prijs U met mijn hele hart.
Ik zal iedereen over al uw wonderen vertellen.
3 Ik ben blij met U en ik juich voor U.
Ik zing voor U, de Allerhoogste God!
4 Toen U verscheen, sloegen mijn vijanden op de vlucht.
Ze struikelden en vielen.
Ze stonden nooit meer op.
5 Toen U als Rechter op uw troon ging zitten,
heeft U rechtvaardig geoordeeld in mijn rechtszaak.
6 U heeft de volken bedreigd.
De mensen die zich niets van U aantrekken, heeft U vernietigd.
U heeft hun naam voor eeuwig uitgeveegd.
7 Nu zijn er geen vijanden meer!
U heeft hun steden verwoest.
Voor eeuwig liggen ze in puin.
Niemand weet nog dat ze hebben bestaan.
8 Maar de Heer zit voor eeuwig op zijn troon.
Hij is de eeuwige Rechter.
9 Hij zal rechtvaardig over de wereld rechtspreken.
Hij spreekt een rechtvaardig oordeel uit over de volken.
10 Voor mensen in nood is de Heer een veilige burcht.
Bij Hem zijn ze veilig in moeilijke tijden.
11 De mensen die U kennen, vertrouwen daarom op U.
Want mensen die van U houden, worden nooit door U in de steek gelaten.
12 Zing dankliederen voor de Heer die op de berg Sion woont!
Vertel aan de volken wat Hij heeft gedaan!
13 Want Hij vergeet het niet als onschuldige mensen worden gedood.
Hij straft de schuldigen.
Hij luistert als arme en verdrukte mensen Hem om hulp roepen.
14 Heb alstublieft medelijden met mij, Heer!
Kijk toch hoe slecht ik er aan toe ben!
Dat is de schuld van de mensen die mij haten.
Maar U haalt mij weg bij de poorten van de dood!
15 Dan zal ik in de poorten van Jeruzalem vertellen
over de geweldige dingen die U heeft gedaan.
Ik zal juichen dat U mij heeft gered.
16 De volken zijn in de valkuil gevallen
die ze voor anderen hadden gegraven.
Hun eigen voeten trapten in de val
die ze voor anderen hadden opgezet.
17 De Heer heeft laten zien wie Hij is.
Hij zorgde ervoor dat gebeurde wat rechtvaardig is.
De mensen die Hem niet gehoorzamen,
raakten verstrikt in hun eigen slechtheid.
Denk daar maar eens over na!
18 Omdat ze zich niets van God aantrekken,
zijn ze op weg naar het dodenrijk.
Iedereen die God vergeet, is op die weg naar de dood.
19 Maar de arme mensen worden niet door God vergeten.
Op een dag gebeurt dat wat ze hopen.
20 Kom Heer!
Zorg dat de slechte mensen niet het laatste woord hebben!
Spreek recht over de volken!
21 Maak ze bang, Heer,
zodat ze zullen toegeven dat ze maar mensen zijn.

To the chief Musician upon Muth-labben, A Psalm of David.
1 I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart;
I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee:
I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
3 When mine enemies are turned back,
they shall fall and perish at thy presence.
4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause;
thou satest in the throne judging right.
5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen,
thou hast destroyed the wicked,
thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.
6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end:
and thou hast destroyed cities;
their memorial is perished with them.
7 But the Lord shall endure for ever:
he hath prepared his throne for judgment.
8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness,
he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.
9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed,
a refuge in times of trouble.
10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee:
for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion:
declare among the people his doings.
12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them:
he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.
13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord;
consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me,
thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:
14 that I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion:
I will rejoice in thy salvation.
15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made:
in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.
16 The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth:
the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.
Higgaion. Selah.
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell,
and all the nations that forget God.
18 For the needy shall not alway be forgotten:
the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.
19 Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail:
let the heathen be judged in thy sight.
20 Put them in fear, O Lord:
that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.

9 O Lord, I will praise you with all my heart and tell everyone about the marvelous things you do. 2 I will be glad, yes, filled with joy because of you. I will sing your praises, O Lord God above all gods.[a]
3 My enemies will fall back and perish in your presence; 4 you have vindicated me; you have endorsed my work, declaring from your throne that it is good.[b] 5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked, blotting out their names forever and ever. 6 O enemies of mine, you are doomed forever. The Lord will destroy your cities; even the memory of them will disappear.
7-8 But the Lord lives on forever; he sits upon his throne to judge justly the nations of the world. 9 All who are oppressed may come to him. He is a refuge for them in their times of trouble. 10 All those who know your mercy, Lord, will count on you for help. For you have never yet forsaken those who trust in you.
11 Oh, sing out your praises to the God who lives in Jerusalem.[c] Tell the world about his unforgettable deeds. 12 He who avenges murder has an open ear to those who cry to him for justice. He does not ignore the prayers of men in trouble when they call to him for help.
13 And now, O Lord, have mercy on me; see how I suffer at the hands of those who hate me. Lord, snatch me back from the jaws of death. 14 Save me, so that I can praise you publicly before all the people at Jerusalem’s gates[d] and rejoice that you have rescued me.
15 The nations fall into the pitfalls they have dug for others; the trap they set has snapped on them. 16 The Lord is famous for the way he punishes the wicked in their own snares![e]
17 The wicked shall be sent away to hell; this is the fate of all the nations forgetting the Lord. 18 For the needs of the needy shall not be ignored forever; the hopes of the poor shall not always be crushed.
19 O Lord, arise and judge and punish the nations; don’t let them defy you! 20 Make them tremble in fear; put the nations in their place until at last they know they are but puny men.

1 I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;(A)
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.(B)
2 I will be glad and rejoice(C) in you;
I will sing the praises(D) of your name,(E) O Most High.
3 My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
4 For you have upheld my right(F) and my cause,(G)
sitting enthroned(H) as the righteous judge.(I)
5 You have rebuked the nations(J) and destroyed the wicked;
you have blotted out their name(K) for ever and ever.
6 Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
you have uprooted their cities;(L)
even the memory of them(M) has perished.
7 The Lord reigns forever;(N)
he has established his throne(O) for judgment.
8 He rules the world in righteousness(P)
and judges the peoples with equity.(Q)
9 The Lord is a refuge(R) for the oppressed,(S)
a stronghold in times of trouble.(T)
10 Those who know your name(U) trust in you,

18 But God will never forget the needy;

- Psalm 9:16 The Hebrew has Higgaion and Selah (words of uncertain meaning) here; Selah occurs also at the end of verse 20.
