医治盲人
9 耶稣在路上看见一个生来失明的人。 2 门徒问耶稣：“老师，这个人生下来便双目失明，是因为他犯了罪呢，还是他父母犯了罪呢？”
3 耶稣说：“不是他犯了罪，也不是他父母犯了罪，而是要在他身上彰显上帝的作为。 4 趁着白天，我们必须做差我来者的工作，黑夜一到，就没有人能工作了。 5 我在世上的时候，是世界的光。”
6 耶稣讲完后，便吐唾沫在地上，用唾沫和泥抹在那盲人的眼睛上， 7 对他说：“到西罗亚池去洗洗！”西罗亚是“奉差遣”的意思。那盲人照着去做，回来的时候已经能看见了。
8 他的邻居和从前见他讨饭的人说：“他不是那个常在这里讨饭的人吗？”
9 有人说：“是他。”有人说：“不是他，只是长得像他。”
他自己说：“我就是那个人。”
10 他们问：“你的眼睛是怎么好的？”
11 他回答说：“有一位叫耶稣的人和泥抹我的眼睛，叫我到西罗亚池子去洗。我照着去做，眼睛就能看见了。”
12 他们问：“那个人现在在哪里？”他说：“我不知道。”
盘问复明的盲人
13 他们就把这个从前失明的人带到法利赛人那里。 14 耶稣和泥开他眼睛的那天是安息日。 15 法利赛人也查问他的眼睛是怎么复明的。盲人便对他们说：“祂把泥抹在我的眼睛上，我去一洗，眼睛就看见了。”
16 有些法利赛人说：“那个人不是从上帝那里来的，因为祂不守安息日。”有些人却说：“如果祂是个罪人，又怎能行这样的神迹呢？”他们就争论起来。
17 于是，他们又问那个盲人：“既然祂开了你的眼睛，你认为祂是什么人？”
他说：“祂是先知。”
18 犹太人不相信他以前是瞎眼的，现在能看见了，便叫来他的父母， 19 问他们：“这是你们的儿子吗？你们不是说他生来就瞎眼吗？怎么现在能看见了？”
20 他父母回答说：“我们知道他是我们的儿子，生来双目失明。 21 至于他现在怎么能看见了，我们就不知道了。是谁医好了他，我们也不知道。他现在已经长大成人，你们可以去问他，他自己可以回答。”
22 他父母因为害怕那些犹太人，所以才这样说，因为那些犹太人早就商量好了，谁承认耶稣是基督，就把他赶出会堂。 23 因此他父母才说他已经长大成人，叫他们去问他。
24 法利赛人又把那个从前失明的人叫来，对他说：“你应该把荣耀归给上帝[a]！我们知道那个人是罪人。”
25 他说：“祂是不是罪人，我不知道；我只知道从前我是瞎眼的，现在能看见了。”
26 他们就问他：“祂向你做了些什么？祂是怎样医好你眼睛的？”
27 他回答说：“我已经告诉过你们了，你们不听，现在又问，难道你们也想做祂的门徒吗？”
28 他们就骂他：“你才是祂的门徒！我们是摩西的门徒。 29 我们知道上帝曾对摩西讲话，至于这个人，我们不知道祂是从哪里来的。”
30 那人说：“祂开了我的眼睛，你们竟不知道祂从哪里来，真是奇怪。 31 我们知道上帝不听罪人的祷告，只听那些敬拜祂、遵行祂旨意者的祷告。 32 从创世以来，从未听过有人能把天生失明的人医好。 33 如果这个人不是从上帝那里来的，就什么也不能做。”
34 法利赛人斥责他：“你这生来就深陷罪中的家伙，居然敢教导我们！”于是把他赶了出去。
35 耶稣听说了这事，后来祂找到这个人，对他说：“你信上帝的儿子吗？”
36 他说：“先生，谁是上帝的儿子？我要信祂。”
37 耶稣说：“你已经看见祂了，现在跟你说话的就是祂。”
38 他说：“主啊！我信！”他就敬拜耶稣。
39 耶稣说：“我为了审判来到这世界，使瞎眼的可以看见，使看得见的反成了瞎眼的。”
40 有些跟祂在一起的法利赛人听了这句话，就问：“难道我们也瞎了眼吗？”
41 耶稣说：“如果你们是瞎眼的，就没有罪了。但现在你们自称看得见，所以你们的罪还在。”

Jesus botar en man som föddes blind
9 När Jesus gick vidare fick han se en man som hade varit blind sedan födseln.
2 Då frågade hans lärjungar: ”Rabbi, för vems synd föddes den här mannen blind, hans egen eller hans föräldrars?”
3 Jesus svarade dem: ”Det var varken för att han själv eller hans föräldrar syndade. Men Guds gärningar skulle uppenbaras på honom. 4 Vi måste, så länge det är dag, göra hans gärningar som har sänt mig. Snart blir det natt, och då kan ingen arbeta. 5 Så länge jag är i världen, är jag världens ljus.”
6 Sedan spottade han på marken och gjorde en deg av lera som han strök på mannens ögon, 7 och han sa till honom: ”Gå och tvätta dig i Siloadammen” (Siloa betyder utsänd). Mannen gick då iväg till dammen och tvättade sig, och när han kom tillbaka kunde han se.
8 Hans grannar och andra som hade sett honom som tiggare, frågade varandra: ”Är det inte han som satt och tiggde förut?”
9 ”Jo, det är det”, sa en del, medan andra sa: ”Nej, han är bara lik honom.”
Men själv sa han: ”Visst är det jag.”
10 Då frågade de honom: ”Hur kan det komma sig att du ser?”
11 Mannen svarade: ”Han som heter Jesus gjorde en deg och strök den på mina ögon, och sedan sa han åt mig att gå till Siloadammen och tvätta mig. Och när jag hade gjort det så kunde jag se.”
12 De frågade honom: ”Var finns han nu?”
Men mannen svarade: ”Det vet jag inte.”
Fariseerna förhör mannen som föddes blind
13 Då tog de med sig mannen som hade varit blind till fariseerna. 14 Det var på en sabbat som Jesus hade gjort degen och gett mannen hans syn. 15 När fariseerna frågade hur det kom sig att han kunde se, berättade han än en gång: ”Han strök en deg på mina ögon, och när jag hade tvättat mig, kunde jag se.”
16 En del av fariseerna sa då: ”Den mannen kan inte vara sänd av Gud eftersom han inte håller sabbaten.” Men andra sa: ”En syndare kan väl inte göra sådana tecken?” Så var deras meningar delade.
17 Och igen frågade de mannen som hade varit blind: ”Vad säger du själv om honom? Det var ju du som fick din syn.” Mannen svarade då: ”Han är en profet.”
18 Men judarna tvivlade på att den botade mannen överhuvudtaget hade varit blind, så de kallade på hans föräldrar 19 och frågade dem: ”Är det här er son? Föddes han blind som ni säger? Och hur kan det då komma sig att han ser nu?”
20 Föräldrarna svarade: ”Vi vet att det är vår son och att han föddes blind. 21 Men hur han kan se nu det vet vi inte, och inte heller vem som har botat honom. Fråga honom själv. Han är gammal nog att svara själv.”
22 Detta sa de för att de var rädda för judarna, som redan då hade bestämt att den som erkände Jesus som Messias skulle utstötas ur synagogan. 23 Därför sa hans föräldrar: ”Han är gammal nog, fråga honom själv.”
24 För andra gången kallade de därför till sig mannen som hade varit blind och sa till honom: ”Ge Gud äran.[a] Vi vet att den där mannen är en syndare.”
25 Men mannen svarade: ”Om han är en syndare eller ej, det vet jag inte. Det enda jag vet är att förut var jag blind, men nu kan jag se.”
26 Då frågade de honom än en gång: ”Vad gjorde han med dig? Hur gjorde han när du fick din syn?”
27 Mannen svarade: ”Det har jag ju redan berättat, men ni lyssnar inte. Varför vill ni höra det igen? Vill ni också bli hans lärjungar?”
28 Då hånade de honom och sa: ”Det är du som är hans lärjunge. Vi är lärjungar till Mose. 29 Vi vet att Gud har talat till Mose, men varifrån den här mannen kommer, det vet vi inte.”
30 ”Det var underligt”, svarade mannen. ”Han gav mig min syn, och ändå vet ni inte varifrån han kommer. 31 Men att Gud inte lyssnar till syndare, det vet vi. Han lyssnar till den som fruktar honom och gör hans vilja. 32 Aldrig någonsin har man hört talas om någon som har botat en som föddes blind. 33 Om den här mannen inte var sänd av Gud, så skulle han inte kunna göra något sådant.”
34 ”Du är helt och hållet född i synd!”, sa de till honom. ”Försöker du undervisa oss?” Och så drev de bort honom.
Jesus talar om andlig blindhet
35 Jesus fick snart höra att de hade drivit bort honom, och när han fann honom igen frågade han: ”Tror du på Människosonen?”
36 Mannen svarade: ”Herre, säg mig vem han är, så att jag kan tro på honom.”
37 Jesus sa: ”Du har sett honom. Det är han som talar med dig.”
38 Då föll mannen ner framför Jesus och sa: ”Jag tror, Herre.”
39 Sedan sa Jesus: ”Till en dom har jag kommit hit till världen, för att de som inte ser ska börja se, och de som ser ska bli blinda.”
40 Några fariseer som var där med honom hörde det och frågade: ”Menar du att vi skulle vara blinda?”
41 Då svarade Jesus: ”Om ni var blinda skulle ni vara utan synd. Men nu menar ni att ni kan se, och därför finns er synd kvar.

9 While He was passing by, He noticed a man [who had been] blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), who [a]sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed and illustrated in him. 4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world [giving guidance through My word and works].” 6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground and made mud with His saliva, and He spread the mud [like an ointment] on the man’s eyes. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of [b]Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing. 8 So the neighbors, and those who used to know him as a beggar, said, “Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Still others said, “No, but he looks like him.” But he kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” 11 He replied, “The Man called Jesus made mud and smeared it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received my sight!” 12 They asked him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
Controversy over the Man
13 Then they brought the man who was formerly blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus made the mud and opened the man’s eyes. 15 So the Pharisees asked him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He smeared mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.” 16 Then some of the Pharisees said, “This Man [Jesus] is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner (a non-observant Jew) do such signs and miracles?” So there was a difference of opinion among them. 17 Accordingly they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “[It must be that] He is a [c]prophet!”
18 However, the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the man’s parents. 19 They asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but as to how he now sees, we do not know; or who has opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him [and stop asking us]; [d]he is of age, he will speak for himself and give his own account of it.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of [the leaders of] the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged Jesus to be the Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue (excommunicated). 23 Because of this his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So a second time they called the man who had been [born] blind, and said to him, “Give God glory and praise [for your sight]! We know this Man [Jesus] is a sinner [separated from God].” 25 Then he answered, “I do not know whether He is a sinner [separated from God]; but one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He [actually] do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered, “I already told you and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again and again? Do you want to become His disciples, too?” 28 And [at that remark] they stormed at him and jeered, “You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 29 We know [for certain] that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this Man, we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man replied, “Well, this is astonishing! You do not know where He comes from, and yet He opened my eyes! 31 We know [according to your tradition] that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone fears God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the [e]beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this Man were not from God, He would not be able to do anything [like this because God would not hear His prayer].” 34 They answered him, “You were [f]born entirely in sins [from head to foot], and you [presume to] teach us?” Then they threw him out [of the synagogue].
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35 Jesus heard that they had [g]put him out [of the synagogue], and finding him, He asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “Who is He, Sir? Tell me so that I may believe in Him.” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and [in fact] He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “Lord, I believe [in You and Your word]!” And he worshiped Him [with reverence and awe]. 39 Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment [to separate those who believe in Me from those who reject Me—to declare judgment on those who choose to be separated from God], so that the sightless would see, and those who see would become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind [to spiritual things], you would have no sin [and would not be blamed for your unbelief]; but since you claim to have [spiritual] sight, [you have no excuse so] your sin and guilt remain.(A)

- John 9:7 The ancient town of Siloam is now an Arab village named Silwan. It is east of Jerusalem and south of the Old City. The pool of Siloam was fed by the Gihon Spring in the Kidron Valley through a channel (Hezekiah’s tunnel) that carried water into Jerusalem.
- John 9:17 Prophets were able to foretell the future and perform other miracles under the power and direction of God.
- John 9:21 Anyone 13 years and one day old was considered of age.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
