給五千人吃飽的神蹟(A)
6 這些事以後，耶穌渡過加利利海，就是提比里亞海。 2 有一大群人，因為看見了他在病人身上所行的神蹟，就跟隨了他。 3 耶穌上了山，同門徒坐在那裡。 4 那時猶太人的逾越節近了。 5 耶穌舉目觀看，見一大群人向他走過來，就對腓力說：“我們從哪裡買餅給這些人吃呢？” 6 他說這話，是要試驗腓力，因他自己早已知道要怎樣作。 7 腓力回答：“就算二百銀幣買的餅，每人分一點，也是不夠的。” 8 有一個門徒，就是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說： 9 “這裡有個小孩子，帶著五個大麥餅、兩條魚；只是分給這麼多人，有甚麼用呢？” 10 耶穌吩咐他們：“你們叫眾人坐下。”原來那地方的草很多，眾人就坐下，單是男人的數目約有五千。 11 耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給坐著的人；分魚也是這樣，都是隨著他們所要的。 12 他們吃飽了之後，耶穌對門徒說：“把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。” 13 門徒就把眾人吃剩那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。 14 眾人看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：“這真是那要到世上來的先知。” 15 耶穌知道群眾要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。
耶穌在海面上行走(B)
16 到了晚上，他的門徒下到海邊去。 17 他們上了船，要渡海往迦百農去。那時天已經黑了，耶穌還沒有到他們那裡。 18 忽然海上起了狂風，波浪翻騰。 19 門徒搖櫓約行了五六公里，看見耶穌在海面上行走，漸漸靠近船，就害怕起來。 20 耶穌對他們說：“是我，不要怕。” 21 他們這才把他接上船，船就立刻到了他們要去的地方。
耶穌是生命的食物
22 第二天，站在海那邊的群眾，看見只有一隻小船留在那裡，並且知道耶穌沒有和他的門徒一同上船，門徒是自己去的； 23 不過有幾隻從提比里亞來的船停在那裡，靠近他們在主祝謝以後吃餅的地方。 24 群眾見耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就上船往迦百農去找耶穌。 25 他們在對岸找到了耶穌，就問他：“拉比，你幾時到這裡來的？” 26 耶穌回答：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們找我，不是因為看見了神蹟，而是因為吃了餅又吃飽了。 27 不要為那必朽壞的食物操勞，卻要為那存到永生的食物操勞，就是人子所要賜給你們的，因為人子是父 神所印證的。” 28 眾人又問他：“我們應該作甚麼，才算是作 神的工作呢？” 29 耶穌回答：“信 神所差來的，就是作 神的工了。” 30 於是他們就說：“你要行甚麼神蹟，讓我們看了就信你呢？你到底能作甚麼呢？ 31 我們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，正如經上所記：‘他把從天上來的食物賜給他們吃。’” 32 耶穌對他們說：“我實實在在告訴你們，不是摩西把那從天上來的食物賜給你們，而是我父把天上來的真食物賜給你們； 33 因為 神的食物就是從天上降下來，把生命賜給世人的那一位。”
34 他們對耶穌說：“主啊，求你常把這食物賜給我們。” 35 耶穌說：“我就是生命的食物，到我這裡來的，必定不餓；信我的，永遠不渴。 36 但我告訴你們，你們雖然見了我，還是不信。 37 凡是父賜給我的人，必到我這裡來；到我這裡來的，我決不丟棄他， 38 因為我從天上降下來，不是要行自己的意思，而是要行那差我來者的旨意。 39 那差我來者的旨意就是：他所賜給我的人，我連一個也不失落，並且在末日我要使他們復活。 40 因為我父的旨意，是要使所有看見了子而信的人有永生，並且在末日我要使他們復活。”
41 猶太人因為耶穌說“我是從天上降下來的食物”，就紛紛議論他。 42 他們說：“這不是約瑟的兒子耶穌嗎？他的父母我們不都認識嗎？他現在怎麼說‘我是從天上降下來的’呢？” 43 耶穌回答：“你們不要彼此議論。 44 如果不是差我來的父吸引人，就沒有人能到我這裡來；到我這裡來的，在末日我要使他復活。 45 先知書上記著：‘眾人都必受 神的教導。’凡聽見從父那裡來的教訓而又學習的，必到我這裡來。 46 這不是說有人見過父；只有從 神那裡來的那一位，他才見過父。 47 我實實在在告訴你們，信的人有永生。 48 我就是生命的食物， 49 你們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，還是死了。 50 這是從天上降下來的食物，使人吃了就不死。 51 我就是從天上降下來生命的食物，人若吃了這食物，就必活到永遠。我要賜的食物就是我的肉，是為了世人的生命而賜的。”
52 於是，猶太人彼此爭論，說：“這個人怎能把他的肉給我們吃呢？” 53 耶穌就對他們說：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們若不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就沒有生命在你們裡面。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的，就有永生，在末日我要使他復活； 55 因為我的肉是真正的食物，我的血是真正的飲料。 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人，就住在我裡面，我也住在他裡面。 57 正如永活的父差遣了我，我也因父活著；照樣，吃我肉的人也必因我而活。 58 這就是從天上降下來的食物，不像嗎哪，你們的祖宗吃過，還是死了；吃這食物的，必活到永遠。” 59 這些話是耶穌在迦百農會堂裡教導人的時候說的。
永生之道
60 他的門徒中，有許多人聽了，就說：“這話很難，誰能接受呢？” 61 耶穌心裡知道門徒為了這事議論紛紛，就對他們說：“這話使你們動搖嗎？ 62 如果你們看見人子升到他原來所在的地方，又怎樣呢？ 63 使人活的是靈，肉體是無濟於事的。我對你們所說的話是靈、是生命。 64 然而你們中間卻有不信的人。”原來從起初耶穌就知道那些不信的是誰，那要把他出賣的又是誰。 65 耶穌跟著說：“所以我對你們說過，如果不是父所賜的，沒有人能到我這裡來。”
66 從此，他的門徒中有許多人退去了，不再與他同行。 67 於是耶穌對十二門徒說：“你們也想離去嗎？” 68 西門．彼得回答：“主啊，你有永生之道，我們還跟從誰呢？ 69 我們已經相信，並且知道你是 神的聖者。” 70 耶穌說：“我不是揀選了你們十二個人嗎？但你們中間有一個是魔鬼。” 71 耶穌這話是指著加略人西門的兒子猶大說的，因為他雖然是十二門徒之一，卻要出賣耶穌。

Ang Pagpapakain sa Limanlibo(A)
6 Pagkatapos nito, tumawid si Jesus sa ibayo ng Lawa ng Galilea, na tinatawag ding Lawa ng Tiberias. 2 Sinundan siya ng napakaraming tao sapagkat nakita nila ang mga himalang ginawa niya sa pagpapagaling sa mga maysakit. 3 Umakyat si Jesus sa bundok kasama ang kanyang mga alagad at naupo roon. 4 Noon ay malapit na ang Paskwa ng mga Judio. 5 Tumanaw si Jesus at nang makita niyang dumarating ang napakaraming tao, tinanong niya si Felipe, “Saan kaya tayo makakabili ng tinapay upang makakain ang mga taong ito?” 6 Sinabi niya iyon upang subukin si Felipe, sapagkat alam na niya ang kanyang gagawin.
7 Sumagot naman si Felipe, “Kahit na po halagang dalawandaang salaping pilak[a] ng tinapay ay di sasapat para makakain sila nang tigkakaunti.”
8 Sinabi ni Andres na isa sa kanyang mga alagad at kapatid ni Simon Pedro, 9 “Mayroon po ritong isang batang lalaki na may dalang limang tinapay na sebada at dalawang isda. Subalit sasapat kaya ang mga ito?” 10 “Paupuin ninyo ang mga tao,” sabi ni Jesus. Madamo sa lugar na iyon. Umupo nga ang mga tao; sa kanila'y may humigit-kumulang sa limanlibo ang mga lalaki. 11 Kinuha ni Jesus ang tinapay at matapos magpasalamat sa Diyos ay ipinamahagi iyon sa mga taong nakaupo. Gayundin ang ginawa niya sa mga isda. Nakakain ang lahat at nabusog. 12 Nang makakain na ang mga tao, sinabi ni Jesus sa mga alagad, “Ipunin ninyo ang lumabis nang di masayang.” 13 Ganoon nga ang ginawa nila, at nakapuno sila ng labindalawang kaing mula sa limang tinapay na sebada.
14 Nang makita ng mga tao ang himalang ginawa ni Jesus, sinabi nila, “Tunay na ito ang Propetang darating sa sanlibutan!” 15 Napansin ni Jesus na lalapitan siya ng mga tao at pipilitin siyang gawing hari, kaya't umalis siyang muli at mag-isang umakyat sa bundok.
Lumakad si Jesus sa Ibabaw ng Tubig(B)
16 Nang magtatakipsilim na, ang mga alagad ay pumunta sa tabi ng lawa. 17 Sumakay sila sa bangka at naglayag papuntang Capernaum. Madilim na'y wala pa si Jesus. 18 Lumakas ang hangin at lumaki ang alon. 19 Nang makasagwan na sila nang may lima o anim na kilometro, nakita nila si Jesus na lumalakad sa ibabaw ng tubig papalapit sa bangka, at sila'y natakot. 20 Ngunit sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Huwag kayong matakot. Ako ito!” 21 Tuwang-tuwa nilang pinasakay si Jesus; at kaagad na nakarating ang bangka sa kanilang pupuntahan.
Hinanap ng mga Tao si Jesus
22 Kinabukasan, nakita ng mga taong naiwan sa dalampasigan na iisa lamang ang bangkang naroon. Nalaman nilang si Jesus ay hindi kasama ng mga alagad nang ang mga ito'y sumakay sa bangka dahil ang mga ito lamang ang umalis. 23 Dumating naman ang ilang bangkang galing sa Tiberias at dumaong sa lugar na malapit sa kinainan nila ng tinapay matapos magpasalamat ang Panginoon. 24 Kaya't nang makita nilang wala roon si Jesus at ang kanyang mga alagad, sila'y sumakay sa mga bangka at pumunta sa Capernaum upang hanapin si Jesus.
Si Jesus ang Tinapay na Nagbibigay-buhay
25 Nang makita nila si Jesus sa ibayo ng lawa, siya'y tinanong nila, “Guro, kailan pa kayo rito?”
26 Sumagot si Jesus, “Totoo ang sinasabi kong ito: hinahanap ninyo ako, hindi dahil sa mga himalang nakita ninyo, kundi dahil nakakain kayo ng tinapay at nabusog. 27 Huwag(C) ang pagkaing nasisira ang inyong pagsikapang kamtan, kundi ang pagkaing hindi nasisira na nagbibigay ng buhay na walang hanggan. Iyan ang ibibigay sa inyo ng Anak ng Tao, sapagkat ipinapakita ng Diyos Ama na siya ang may ganitong karapatan.”
28 Kaya't siya'y tinanong nila, “Ano po ang dapat naming gawin upang aming matupad ang ipinapagawa ng Diyos?”
29 “Ito ang ipinapagawa sa inyo ng Diyos, sumampalataya kayo sa sinugo niya,” tugon ni Jesus.
30 “Ano pong himala ang maipapakita ninyo upang sumampalataya kami sa inyo? Ano po ang inyong gagawin? 31 Ang(D) aming mga ninuno ay kumain ng manna sa ilang; ayon sa nasusulat, ‘Sila'y binigyan niya ng tinapay na galing sa langit,’” sabi nila.
32 Sumagot si Jesus, “Pakatandaan ninyo: hindi si Moises ang nagbigay sa inyo ng tinapay na galing sa langit. Ang aking Ama ang nagbibigay sa inyo ng tunay na tinapay na galing sa langit. 33 Sapagkat ang tinapay na galing sa Diyos ay ang bumabâ mula sa langit at nagbibigay-buhay sa sangkatauhan.”
34 Sumagot sila, “Ginoo, bigyan po ninyo kaming lagi ng tinapay na ito.”
35 Sinabi ni Jesus, “Ako ang tinapay ng buhay. Ang lumalapit sa akin ay hindi na magugutom kailanman, at ang sumasampalataya sa akin ay hindi na mauuhaw kailanman. 36 Ngunit sinabi ko na sa inyo, nakita na ninyo ako, ngunit hindi pa rin kayo sumasampalataya sa akin. 37 Lalapit sa akin ang lahat ng ibinibigay sa akin ng Ama, at hinding-hindi ko itataboy kailanman ang sinumang lumalapit sa akin. 38 Ako'y bumabâ mula sa langit, hindi upang gawin ang sarili kong kalooban, kundi ang kalooban niya na nagsugo sa akin. 39 At ito ang kanyang kalooban: ang huwag kong hayaang mapahamak ang kahit sinuman sa mga ibinigay niya sa akin, kundi ang buhayin ko silang muli sa huling araw. 40 Sapagkat ito ang kalooban ng aking Ama: ang lahat ng nakakakita sa Anak at sumasampalataya sa kanya ay magkaroon ng buhay na walang hanggan. At sila'y muli kong bubuhayin sa huling araw.”
41 Nagbulung-bulungan ang mga Judio dahil sa sinabi niyang, “Ako ang tinapay na bumabâ mula sa langit.” 42 Sinabi nila, “Hindi ba ito si Jesus na anak ni Jose? Kilala natin ang kanyang ama't ina. Paano niya masasabi ngayong bumabâ siya mula sa langit?” 43 Kaya't sinabi ni Jesus, “Tigilan ninyo ang inyong bulung-bulungan. 44 Walang makakalapit sa akin malibang dalhin siya sa akin ng Ama na nagsugo sa akin. At ang lumalapit sa akin ay muli kong bubuhayin sa huling araw. 45 Nasusulat(E) sa aklat ng mga propeta, ‘At silang lahat ay tuturuan ng Diyos.’ Ang bawat nakikinig sa Ama at natututo sa kanya ay lumalapit sa akin. 46 Hindi ito nangangahulugang may nakakita na sa Ama; ang nagmula sa Diyos ang tanging nakakita sa Ama. 47 Pakatandaan ninyo: ang sumasampalataya sa akin ay may buhay na walang hanggan. 48 Ako ang tinapay ng buhay. 49 Kumain ng manna ang inyong mga ninuno nang sila'y nasa ilang, ngunit sila'y namatay. 50 Narito ang tinapay na bumabâ mula sa langit upang ang sinumang kumain nito ay hindi na mamatay. 51 Ako nga ang tinapay na nagbibigay-buhay na bumabâ mula sa langit. Mabubuhay magpakailanman ang sinumang kumain ng tinapay na ito. At ang tinapay na ibibigay ko upang mabuhay ang sanlibutan ay ang aking laman.”
52 Dahil dito'y nagtalu-talo ang mga Judio, “Paanong maibibigay sa atin ng taong ito ang kanyang laman upang makain natin?”
53 Sinabi ni Jesus, “Pakatandaan ninyo: malibang kainin ninyo ang laman ng Anak ng Tao at inumin ang kanyang dugo, hindi kayo magkakaroon ng buhay. 54 Ang kumakain ng aking laman at umiinom ng aking dugo ay may buhay na walang hanggan at muli ko siyang bubuhayin sa huling araw. 55 Sapagkat ang aking laman ay tunay na pagkain, at ang aking dugo ay tunay na inumin. 56 Ang kumakain ng aking laman at umiinom ng aking dugo ay nananatili sa akin, at ako naman sa kanya. 57 Isinugo ako ng buháy na Ama at ako'y nabubuhay dahil sa kanya. Gayundin naman, ang sinumang kumakain sa akin ay mabubuhay dahil sa akin. 58 Ito ang tinapay na bumabâ mula sa langit. Hindi ito katulad ng kinain ng inyong mga ninuno sa ilang; namatay sila kahit na kumain niyon. Ang kumakain ng tinapay na ito ay mabubuhay magpakailanman.”
59 Sinabi ito ni Jesus sa sinagoga habang siya'y nagtuturo sa Capernaum.
Mga Salita tungkol sa Buhay na Walang Hanggan
60 Narinig ito ng kanyang mga alagad at marami sa kanila ang nagsabi, “Mabigat na pananalita ito; sino ang makakatanggap nito?”
61 Kahit walang nagsasabi kay Jesus, alam niya na nagbubulung-bulungan ang kanyang mga alagad tungkol dito. Kaya't sinabi niya, “Dahil ba rito'y tatalikuran na ninyo ako? 62 Gaano pa kaya kung makita ninyong umaakyat ang Anak ng Tao papunta sa dati niyang kinaroroonan? 63 Ang(F) Espiritu ang nagbibigay-buhay; hindi ito magagawa ng laman. Ang mga salitang sinabi ko sa inyo ay espiritu at ito ang nagbibigay-buhay. 64 Ngunit may ilan sa inyong hindi sumasampalataya.” Alam na ni Jesus buhat pa noong una kung sinu-sino ang hindi mananalig sa kanya, at kung sino ang magkakanulo sa kanya. 65 Idinugtong pa niya, “Iyan ang dahilan kaya ko sinabi sa inyo na walang makakalapit sa akin malibang ito'y loobin ng Ama.”
66 Mula noo'y marami sa kanyang mga alagad ang tumalikod at hindi na sumama sa kanya. 67 Tinanong ni Jesus ang Labindalawa, “At kayo, gusto rin ba ninyong umalis?”
68 Sumagot(G) si Simon Pedro, “Panginoon, kanino pa po kami pupunta? Nasa inyo ang mga salitang nagbibigay ng buhay na walang hanggan. 69 Naniniwala kami at natitiyak namin na kayo nga ang Banal na mula sa Diyos.”
70 Sumagot si Jesus, “Hindi ba't ako ang humirang sa inyong Labindalawa at ang isa sa inyo ay diyablo!” 71 Ang tinutukoy niya'y si Judas na anak ni Simon Iscariote, sapagkat siya na kabilang sa Labindalawa ay magkakanulo sa kanya.

耶穌使五千人吃飽
6 事後，耶穌渡過加利利湖，就是提比哩亞海。 2 許多人因為見過耶穌治病的神蹟，就跟隨了祂。 3 耶穌到了山上，與門徒一起坐下來。 4 那時，猶太人的逾越節快到了。 5 耶穌舉目看見一大群人向祂走來，就對腓力說：「我們到哪裡去買餅給他們吃呢？」 6 祂這樣說是想試試腓力，其實祂知道應該怎麼做。
7 腓力回答說：「就算買二百個銀幣[a]的餅，也不夠他們每人一口啊！」
8 另外一個門徒——西門·彼得的弟弟安得烈對耶穌說： 9 「這裡有個小孩子帶了五個大麥餅和兩條魚。不過，這麼多人，這一點東西實在無濟於事。」
10 耶穌說：「你們叫大家坐下。」那地方草很多，眾人便坐下來，當時在場的男人大約有五千。 11 耶穌拿起餅來祝謝後，分給坐著的眾人，然後又照樣分魚，眾人可以隨意吃。 12 他們吃飽後，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。」
13 他們便把大家吃剩的那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。 14 大家看見耶穌行的這個神蹟，都說：「這人真是那位要來到世上的先知！」 15 耶穌知道他們想強行立祂作王，便獨自退到山上。
耶穌在湖面上行走
16 傍晚的時候，門徒來到湖邊， 17 上了船，去湖對岸的迦百農。天色已暗，耶穌還沒到他們那裡。 18 忽然，湖面上狂風大作，波濤洶湧。 19 門徒搖櫓，大約行了五六公里，突然看見耶穌在水面上朝他們的船走來，他們很害怕。 20 耶穌對他們說：「是我，不要怕。」 21 於是門徒欣然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。
生命之糧
22 第二天，留在對岸的眾人看見那裡只有一條船，耶穌沒有和門徒一起坐船離開。 23 後來有幾條從提比哩亞來的小船停泊在岸邊，靠近主祝謝後讓眾人吃餅的地方。 24 他們發現耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就乘船到迦百農去找祂。
25 他們在湖對岸找到了耶穌，對祂說：「老師，你什麼時候到這裡來的？」
26 耶穌回答說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，你們找我，並不是因為看見了神蹟，而是因為你們有餅吃，並且吃飽了。 27 不要為那必壞的食物勞苦，要為那存到永生的食物，就是人子要賜給你們的食物勞苦，因為父上帝把這權柄交給了人子。」
28 眾人問祂：「我們要怎樣做，才算是做上帝的工作呢？」
29 耶穌說：「信上帝所差來的那位，就是做上帝的工作。」
30 他們又問：「那麼，你行什麼神蹟讓我們看了可以信你呢？你要做什麼呢？ 31 我們的祖先在曠野有嗎哪吃，正如聖經上說，『祂賜下天糧給他們吃。』」
32 耶穌卻說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，不是摩西從天上賜給了你們糧食，而是我父將天上的真糧食賜給你們。 33 因為上帝賜的糧就是從天降下、賜生命給世人的那位。」
34 他們說：「先生，求你把這種糧食天天賜給我們吧。」
35 耶穌說：「我就是生命的糧，到我這裡來的人必定不餓，信我的人必永遠不渴。 36 但我對你們說過，你們雖然親眼看見我，仍然不信。 37 凡父賜給我的人，必到我這裡來。到我這裡來的，我總不丟棄他。 38 因為我從天上下來，不是要成就自己的旨意，而是要成就差我來者的旨意。 39 差我來者的旨意是，祂所賜給我的，我一個也不失掉，在末日我要叫他們復活。 40 因為我父的旨意是要叫一切看見兒子並相信的人得到永生，在末日，我要叫他們復活。」
41 猶太人聽見耶穌說自己是從天上降下來的糧，就小聲議論， 42 說：「這不是約瑟的兒子耶穌嗎？祂的父母，我們都認識，祂現在怎麼能說自己是從天上降下來的呢？」
43 耶穌回答他們說：「你們不用議論紛紛。 44 如果不是差我來的父吸引人到我這裡來，沒有人能來。到我這裡來的，在末日，我要叫他復活。 45 先知書上這樣說，『他們都要受上帝的訓誨』，這裡是指凡聽從父的教導又去效法的人，都會到我這裡來。 46 這並不是說有人見過父，唯獨從上帝而來的那位見過父。 47 我實實在在地告訴你們，信我的人有永生， 48 因為我是生命的糧。 49 你們的祖先在曠野吃過嗎哪，還是死了。 50 但這是從天上降下來的糧，人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下來的生命之糧，人吃了這糧，必永遠活著。我將要賜下的糧就是我的肉，是為了讓世人得到生命。」
52 猶太人開始彼此爭論，說：「這個人怎麼能把自己的肉給我們吃呢？」
53 耶穌說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，如果你們不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就沒有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生，在末日，我要叫他復活。 55 因為我的肉是真糧食，我的血是真飲品， 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我裡面，我也常在他裡面。 57 永活的父差我來，我是靠祂而活。同樣，吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是從天上降下來的真糧，吃這糧的人必永遠活著，不像你們的祖先，雖然吃過嗎哪，最後還是死了。」
59 這番話是耶穌在迦百農會堂裡教導人的時候講的。
永生之道
60 祂的許多門徒聽了，就議論說：「這話實在難懂，誰能接受呢？」

Feeding of the five thousand
6 After this Jesus went across the Galilee Sea (that is, the Tiberias Sea). 2 A large crowd followed him, because they had seen the miraculous signs he had done among the sick. 3 Jesus went up a mountain and sat there with his disciples. 4 It was nearly time for Passover, the Jewish festival.
5 Jesus looked up and saw the large crowd coming toward him. He asked Philip, “Where will we buy food to feed these people?” 6 Jesus said this to test him, for he already knew what he was going to do.
7 Philip replied, “More than a half year’s salary[a] worth of food wouldn’t be enough for each person to have even a little bit.”
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, 9 “A youth here has five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that for a crowd like this?”
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass there. They sat down, about five thousand of them. 11 Then Jesus took the bread. When he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting there. He did the same with the fish, each getting as much as they wanted. 12 When they had plenty to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces, so that nothing will be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves that had been left over by those who had eaten.
14 When the people saw that he had done a miraculous sign, they said, “This is truly the prophet who is coming into the world.” 15 Jesus understood that they were about to come and force him to be their king, so he took refuge again, alone on a mountain.
Jesus walks on water
16 When evening came, Jesus’ disciples went down to the lake. 17 They got into a boat and were crossing the lake to Capernaum. It was already getting dark and Jesus hadn’t come to them yet. 18 The water was getting rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When the wind had driven them out for about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water. He was approaching the boat and they were afraid. 20 He said to them, “I Am.[b] Don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and just then the boat reached the land where they had been heading.
22 The next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the lake realized that only one boat had been there. They knew Jesus hadn’t gone with his disciples, but that the disciples had gone alone. 23 Some boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they had eaten the bread over which the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Bread of life
26 Jesus replied, “I assure you that you are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate all the food you wanted. 27 Don’t work for the food that doesn’t last but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Human One[c] will give you. God the Father has confirmed him as his agent to give life.”
28 They asked, “What must we do in order to accomplish what God requires?”
29 Jesus replied, “This is what God requires, that you believe in him whom God sent.”
30 They asked, “What miraculous sign will you do, that we can see and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”[d]
32 Jesus told them, “I assure you, it wasn’t Moses who gave the bread from heaven to you, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 The bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 They said, “Sir,[e] give us this bread all the time!”
35 Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But I told you that you have seen me and still don’t believe. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives to me will come to me, and I won’t send away anyone who comes to me. 38 I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of the one who sent me, that I won’t lose anything he has given me, but I will raise it up at the last day. 40 This is my Father’s will: that all who see the Son and believe in him will have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 The Jewish opposition grumbled about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42 They asked, “Isn’t this Jesus, Joseph’s son, whose mother and father we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus responded, “Don’t grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless they are drawn to me by the Father who sent me, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, And they will all be taught by God.[f] Everyone who has listened to the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. 47 I assure you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that whoever eats from it will never die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 Then the Jews debated among themselves, asking, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “I assure you, unless you eat the flesh of the Human One[g] and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in them. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me lives because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. It isn’t like the bread your ancestors ate, and then they died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60 Many of his disciples who heard this said, “This message is harsh. Who can hear it?”
61 Jesus knew that the disciples were grumbling about this and he said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What if you were to see the Human One[h] going up where he was before? 63 The Spirit is the one who gives life and the flesh doesn’t help at all. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 Yet some of you don’t believe.”Jesus knew from the beginning who wouldn’t believe and the one who would betray him. 65 He said, “For this reason I said to you that none can come to me unless the Father enables them to do so.” 66 At this, many of his disciples turned away and no longer accompanied him.
67 Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”
68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are God’s holy one.”
70 Jesus replied, “Didn’t I choose you twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He was speaking of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, for he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
