耶稣在毕士大池边治病
5 这事以后，犹太人的一个节期到了，耶稣便上耶路撒冷。 2 耶路撒冷靠近羊门的地方有一个水池，希伯来话叫毕士大，池边有五条走廊， 3 里面躺着瞎眼的、瘸腿的、瘫痪的等许多病人。 4 他们都在等候天使来搅动池水。水动时，第一个下去的，无论患什么病都会痊愈。[a]
5 那里有一个人病了三十八年。 6 耶稣看他躺着，知道他病了很久，就问他：“你想痊愈吗？”
7 那人回答说：“先生，水动的时候，没有人把我放进池子里，我要下去的时候，别人总是先我一步。”
8 耶稣对他说：“起来，拿起你的垫子走吧！”
9 那人立刻痊愈了，拿起垫子开始行走。那天正好是安息日， 10 犹太人便对那人说：“今天是安息日，你不可拿着垫子走路。”
11 他说：“那位医好我的叫我拿起垫子走。”
12 他们问他：“叫你拿起垫子走的人是谁？”
13 那人不知道是谁，因为那里人多，耶稣已经躲开了。
14 后来，耶稣在圣殿里遇见他，对他说：“现在你已经完全好了，别再犯罪了，免得你遭遇更不幸的事。”
15 那人便去告诉犹太人医好他的是耶稣。 16 因为耶稣在安息日给人治病，犹太人开始迫害祂。 17 耶稣对他们说：“我父一直在工作，我也一直在工作。”
18 犹太人听了，更想杀祂，因祂不但违犯了安息日的规矩，还称上帝为父，把自己看作与上帝平等。
圣子的权柄
19 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，子凭自己什么都不能做，唯有看见父做什么，子才做什么。无论父做什么，子也照样做。 20 父因为爱子，便把自己的一切作为给祂看，而且还要把比这些更大的作为给祂看，叫你们惊奇。 21 父如何使死人复活、赐生命给他们，子也照样想赐生命给谁，就赐给谁。 22 父不审判人，祂将审判的事全交给子， 23 叫人尊敬子如同尊敬父。不尊敬子的，就是不尊敬差子来的父。
24 “我实实在在地告诉你们，谁听从我的话，又信差我来的那位，谁就有永生，不被定罪，已经出死入生了。 25 我实实在在地告诉你们，时候快到了，现在就是，死人将听见上帝儿子的声音，听见的将存活。 26 因为正如父自己是生命的源头，祂也同样让子作生命的源头， 27 又把审判的权柄交给祂，因为祂是人子。 28 你们不要因此而惊奇，时候一到，一切在坟墓里的死人都要听见上帝儿子的声音， 29 他们都要从坟墓里出来。行善的人复活后得永生，作恶的人复活后被定罪。”
见证耶稣
30 耶稣继续说：“我凭自己不能做什么，我按父上帝的旨意审判，我的审判是公平的；因为我不是按自己的旨意行，而是按差我来者的旨意行。
31 “如果我为自己做见证，我的见证是无效的。 32 然而，有别的人给我做见证，我知道他为我做的见证是真实的。 33 你们曾派人到约翰那里，他为真理做过见证。 34 其实我并不需要人的见证，我之所以提起这些事是为了使你们得救。 35 约翰是一盏点亮的明灯，你们情愿暂时享受他的光。 36 但是我有比约翰更大的见证，因为父交待我去完成的工作，就是我现在所做的工作，证明我是父差来的。 37 差我来的父曾亲自为我做过见证。你们从未听过祂的声音，从未见过祂， 38 心里也没有祂的道，因为你们不信祂所差来的那位。 39 你们研读圣经，以为从圣经中可以得到永生。其实为我做见证的正是这圣经， 40 但你们却不肯到我这里来得生命。
41 “我不接受人所给予的荣耀， 42 我知道你们没有爱上帝的心。 43 我奉我父的名来，你们不接受我；若有人奉自己的名来，你们却接受他。 44 你们喜欢互相恭维，却不追求从独一上帝来的荣耀，怎能信我呢？ 45 不要以为我会在父面前控告你们，其实控告你们的是你们一直信赖的摩西。 46 你们若信摩西，就应该信我，因为他的书里也提到我。 47 如果你们连他写的都不信，又怎能信我的话呢？”

De genezing bij de vijver Betzata
5 Jezus ging enige tijd later terug naar Jeruzalem om een van de Joodse feesten bij te wonen. 2 Bij de Schaapspoort in Jeruzalem was de vijver Betzata met vijf zuilengalerijen. 3 In die zuilengalerijen lagen talloze zieke mensen, zoals blinden, lammen en kreupelen, te wachten tot het water in beweging zou komen. 4 Want van tijd tot tijd raakte een engel uit de hemel het water aan. Wie dan het eerst in het water stapte werd genezen, wat voor ziekte hij ook had. 5 Er lag ook een man die al achtendertig jaar ziek was. 6 Jezus zag hem daar liggen en wist dat hij al heel lang ziek was. Hij vroeg: ‘Wilt u gezond worden?’ 7 De zieke man antwoordde Hem: ‘Ja, Here, maar ik heb niemand die mij het bad inhelpt als het water in beweging komt. En als ik het alleen probeer, ben ik altijd te laat.’ 8 Jezus zei tegen hem: ‘Sta op! Pak uw matras en loop!’ 9 De man werd direct gezond. Hij pakte zijn matras op en liep!
Nu was het die dag sabbat. 10 Daarom zeiden de Joden tegen de man die net genezen was: ‘Het is sabbat! Dan mag u die matras niet dragen.’ 11 Hij antwoordde: ‘De man die mij genezen heeft, zei dat ik mijn matras moest oppakken en lopen.’ 12 ‘Wie was dat?’ vroegen zij. 13 De man wist het niet, omdat Jezus ongemerkt was weggegaan toen de mensen van alle kanten kwamen aanlopen.
14 Later ontmoette Jezus hem in de tempel en zei tegen hem: ‘Nu u gezond bent geworden, wil Ik u dit nog zeggen: zondig niet meer, want anders zal u iets ergers overkomen.’ 15 De man verliet de tempel en vertelde de Joden dat het Jezus was die hem had genezen. 16 Omdat Jezus dat op de sabbat had gedaan, wilden de Joden Hem straffen. 17 Maar Jezus verdedigde Zich met de woorden: ‘Mijn Vader werkt voortdurend en Ik dus ook.’ 18 Omdat Hij dat gezegd had, wilden zij Hem doden. Hij had niet alleen iets gedaan wat volgens hen op de sabbat niet mocht, Hij had nu ook nog God zijn eigen Vader genoemd. Daarmee beweerde Hij dus aan God gelijk te zijn.
19 ‘Het is waar wat Ik zeg,’ zei Jezus. ‘De Zoon kan niets uit Zichzelf. Hij doet alleen wat zijn Vader Hem voordoet. In feite doet de Zoon hetzelfde als zijn Vader. 20 De Vader houdt van de Zoon en laat Hem steeds zien wat Hij doet. De Vader zal Hem nog grotere dingen laten doen. U zult uw ogen nauwelijks kunnen geloven. 21 Zoals de Vader de doden levend maakt, zo zal ook de Zoon levend maken wie Hij wil. 22 De Vader spreekt geen oordeel uit, maar heeft zijn Zoon opgedragen in zijn plaats recht te spreken. 23 Daarom moet iedereen even veel eer geven aan de Zoon als aan de Vader. Wie de Zoon niet eert, eert ook de Vader niet die Hem gestuurd heeft.
24 Het is zoals Ik zeg: wie naar mijn woorden luistert en gelooft in Hem die Mij gestuurd heeft, heeft eeuwig leven. Over zo iemand wordt geen oordeel uitgesproken, maar die is overgeplaatst uit de dood in het leven. 25 Geloof Mij: er komt een tijd dat de doden de stem van de Zoon van God zullen horen. Die tijd is er nu al. Wie naar de Zoon van God luisteren, zullen leven. 26 De Vader heeft leven in Zichzelf. Hij heeft deze macht ook aan zijn Zoon gegeven, zodat Hij ook leven in Zichzelf heeft. 27 Ook gaf Hij Hem de macht om recht te spreken over de mensen omdat Hij de Mensenzoon geworden is.
28 Verbaas u niet hierover. Eens zullen alle doden zijn stem horen. 29 Dan zullen zij uit hun graf opstaan en wie het goede hebben gedaan, zullen leven. Maar wie het slechte hebben gedaan, zullen veroordeeld worden.
30 Ik kan niets uit Mijzelf doen. Ik oordeel zoals God het Mij zegt. Mijn oordeel is eerlijk en rechtvaardig. Het gaat Mij niet om wat Ik wil maar om wat God wil, want Hij heeft Mij gestuurd.
31 Als Ik iets over Mijzelf zeg, is dat niet geloofwaardig. 32 Maar er is een Ander die over Mij getuigt dat Ik de waarheid spreek en Ik weet dat Hij gelijk heeft. 33 U heeft mensen naar Johannes de Doper gestuurd om te horen wat hij zei. En hij heeft niets dan de waarheid gesproken. 34 Nu heb Ik het getuigenis van een mens niet nodig. Ik herinner u er alleen maar aan, omdat Ik wil dat u gered wordt en zult leven. 35 Johannes was een helder schijnende lamp en u hebt een korte tijd van dat licht genoten. 36 Maar Ik heb een getuigenis dat meer waarde heeft dan dat van Johannes. Denk eens aan de wonderen die de Vader Mij laat doen. Die zijn het bewijs dat Hij Mij gestuurd heeft. 37 Daarmee is Hij mijn getuige, hoewel u Hem nog nooit hebt gezien of gehoord. 38 Wat de Vader zegt, bereikt u niet werkelijk. Want u gelooft Mij niet, hoewel Ik door Hem gestuurd ben. 39 U leest in de boeken van Mozes en de profeten omdat u denkt daarin eeuwig leven te vinden. Al die boeken getuigen over Mij. 40 En toch wilt u niet bij Mij komen om eeuwig leven te vinden.
41 Eer van mensen vind Ik niet belangrijk, 42 omdat Ik weet hoe u bent: u hebt de liefde van God niet in u. 43 Ik ben gekomen om mijn Vader te vertegenwoordigen en u ontvangt Mij niet. Maar wie uit zichzelf komt, zult u wel ontvangen. 44 U vindt het zo belangrijk wat de mensen van u zeggen dat u vergeet dat het erom gaat wat God van u denkt. Daarom kunt u niet in Mij geloven. 45 Denk maar niet dat Ik u bij de Vader zal aanklagen. Dat doet Mozes, op wie u uw hoop gevestigd hebt. 46 Maar u hebt hem niet echt geloofd. Anders zou u Mij ook geloven. Mozes heeft immers geschreven dat Ik zou komen? 47 Als u niet gelooft wat hij heeft geschreven, hoe zult u dan geloven wat Ik zeg?’

Jesús sana a un inválido
5 Algún tiempo después, se celebraba una fiesta de los judíos, y subió Jesús a Jerusalén. 2 Había allí, junto a la puerta de las Ovejas, un estanque rodeado de cinco pórticos, cuyo nombre en arameo es Betzatá.[a] 3 En esos pórticos se hallaban tendidos muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos.[b] 5 Entre ellos se encontraba un hombre inválido que llevaba enfermo treinta y ocho años. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio allí, tirado en el suelo, y se enteró de que ya llevaba mucho tiempo en esa condición, le preguntó:
―¿Quieres quedar sano?
7 ―Señor —respondió—, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque mientras se agita el agua y, cuando trato de hacerlo, otro se mete antes.
8 ―Levántate, recoge tu camilla y anda —le contestó Jesús.
9 Al instante aquel hombre quedó sano, así que tomó su camilla y echó a andar. Pero ese día era sábado. 10 Por eso los judíos le dijeron al que había sido sanado:
―Hoy es sábado; no te está permitido cargar tu camilla.
11 ―El que me sanó me dijo: “Recoge tu camilla y anda” —les respondió.
12 ―¿Quién es ese hombre que te dijo: “Recógela y anda”? —le interpelaron.
13 El que había sido sanado no tenía idea de quién era, porque Jesús se había escabullido entre la mucha gente que había en el lugar.
14 Después de esto Jesús, lo encontró en el templo y le dijo:
―Mira, ya has quedado sano. No vuelvas a pecar, no sea que te ocurra algo peor.
15 El hombre se fue e informó a los judíos que Jesús era quien lo había sanado.
Vida mediante el Hijo
16 Precisamente por esto los judíos perseguían a Jesús, pues hacía tales cosas en sábado. 17 Pero Jesús les respondía:
―Mi Padre aún hoy está trabajando, y yo también trabajo.
18 Así que los judíos redoblaban sus esfuerzos para matarlo, pues no solo quebrantaba el sábado, sino que incluso llamaba a Dios su propio Padre, con lo que él mismo se hacía igual a Dios.
19 Entonces Jesús afirmó:
―Ciertamente os aseguro que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su propia cuenta, sino solamente lo que ve que su Padre hace, porque cualquier cosa que hace el Padre, la hace también el Hijo. 20 Pues el Padre ama al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que hace. Sí, y aun cosas más grandes que estas le mostrará, de modo que os dejará asombrados. 21 Porque así como el Padre resucita a los muertos y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a quienes le place. 22 Además, el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo juicio lo ha delegado en el Hijo, 23 para que todos honren al Hijo como lo honran a él. El que se niega a honrar al Hijo no honra al Padre que lo envió.
24 »Ciertamente os aseguro que el que oye mi palabra y cree al que me envió tiene vida eterna y no será juzgado, sino que ha pasado de la muerte a la vida. 25 Ciertamente os aseguro que ya viene la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios, y los que la oigan vivirán. 26 Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también ha concedido al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo, 27 y le ha dado autoridad para juzgar, puesto que es el Hijo del hombre.
28 »No os asombréis de esto, porque viene la hora en que todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz 29 y saldrán de allí. Los que han hecho el bien resucitarán para tener vida, pero los que han practicado el mal resucitarán para ser juzgados. 30 Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta; juzgo solo según lo que oigo, y mi juicio es justo, pues no busco hacer mi propia voluntad, sino cumplir la voluntad del que me envió.
Los testimonios a favor del Hijo
31 »Si yo testifico en mi favor, ese testimonio no es válido. 32 Otro es el que testifica en mi favor, y me consta que es válido el testimonio que él da de mí.
33 »Vosotros enviasteis una delegación a preguntar a Juan, y él dio un testimonio válido. 34 Y no es que acepte yo el testimonio de un hombre; más bien lo menciono para que seáis salvos. 35 Juan era una lámpara encendida y brillante, y vosotros decidisteis disfrutar de su luz por algún tiempo.
36 »El testimonio con que yo cuento tiene más peso que el de Juan. Porque esa misma tarea que el Padre me ha encomendado que lleve a cabo, y que estoy haciendo, es la que testifica que el Padre me ha enviado. 37 Y el Padre mismo que me envió ha testificado en mi favor. Nunca habéis oído su voz, ni visto su figura, 38 ni vive su palabra en vosotros, porque no creéis en aquel a quien él envió. 39 Estudiáis[c] con diligencia las Escrituras porque pensáis hallar en ellas la vida eterna. ¡Y son ellas las que dan testimonio en mi favor! 40 Sin embargo, no queréis venir a mí para tener esa vida.
41 »La gloria humana no la acepto, 42 pero a vosotros os conozco, y sé que no amáis realmente a Dios.[d] 43 Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y no me aceptáis; pero, si otro viniera por su propia cuenta, a ese sí lo aceptaríais. 44 ¿Cómo va a ser posible que creáis vosotros si buscáis la gloria los unos de los otros, pero no buscáis la gloria que viene del Dios único?[e]
45 »Pero no penséis que yo voy a acusaros delante del Padre. Quien os va a acusar es Moisés, en quien tenéis puesta vuestra esperanza. 46 Si creyerais a Moisés, me creeríais a mí, porque de mí escribió él. 47 Pero, si no creéis lo que él escribió, ¿cómo vais a creer mis palabras?»

Even on the Sabbath
5 1-6 Soon another Feast came around and Jesus was back in Jerusalem. Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there was a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda, with five alcoves. Hundreds of sick people—blind, crippled, paralyzed—were in these alcoves. One man had been an invalid there for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him stretched out by the pool and knew how long he had been there, he said, “Do you want to get well?”
7 The sick man said, “Sir, when the water is stirred, I don’t have anybody to put me in the pool. By the time I get there, somebody else is already in.”
8-9 Jesus said, “Get up, take your bedroll, start walking.” The man was healed on the spot. He picked up his bedroll and walked off.
9-10 That day happened to be the Sabbath. The Jews stopped the healed man and said, “It’s the Sabbath. You can’t carry your bedroll around. It’s against the rules.”
11 But he told them, “The man who made me well told me to. He said, ‘Take your bedroll and start walking.’”
12-13 They asked, “Who gave you the order to take it up and start walking?” But the healed man didn’t know, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd.
14 A little later Jesus found him in the Temple and said, “You look wonderful! You’re well! Don’t return to a sinning life or something worse might happen.”
15-16 The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. That is why the Jews were out to get Jesus—because he did this kind of thing on the Sabbath.
17 But Jesus defended himself. “My Father is working straight through, even on the Sabbath. So am I.”
18 That really set them off. The Jews were now not only out to expose him; they were out to kill him. Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was calling God his own Father, putting himself on a level with God.
What the Father Does, the Son Does
19-20 So Jesus explained himself at length. “I’m telling you this straight. The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing.
20-23 “But you haven’t seen the half of it yet, for in the same way that the Father raises the dead and creates life, so does the Son. The Son gives life to anyone he chooses. Neither he nor the Father shuts anyone out. The Father handed all authority to judge over to the Son so that the Son will be honored equally with the Father. Anyone who dishonors the Son, dishonors the Father, for it was the Father’s decision to put the Son in the place of honor.
24 “It’s urgent that you listen carefully to this: Anyone here who believes what I am saying right now and aligns himself with the Father, who has in fact put me in charge, has at this very moment the real, lasting life and is no longer condemned to be an outsider. This person has taken a giant step from the world of the dead to the world of the living.
25-27 “It’s urgent that you get this right: The time has arrived—I mean right now!—when dead men and women will hear the voice of the Son of God and, hearing, will come alive. Just as the Father has life in himself, he has conferred on the Son life in himself. And he has given him the authority, simply because he is the Son of Man, to decide and carry out matters of Judgment.
28-29 “Don’t act so surprised at all this. The time is coming when everyone dead and buried will hear his voice. Those who have lived the right way will walk out into a resurrection Life; those who have lived the wrong way, into a resurrection Judgment.
30-33 “I can’t do a solitary thing on my own: I listen, then I decide. You can trust my decision because I’m not out to get my own way but only to carry out orders. If I were simply speaking on my own account, it would be an empty, self-serving witness. But an independent witness confirms me, the most reliable Witness of all. Furthermore, you all saw and heard John, and he gave expert and reliable testimony about me, didn’t he?
34-38 “But my purpose is not to get your vote, and not to appeal to mere human testimony. I’m speaking to you this way so that you will be saved. John was a torch, blazing and bright, and you were glad enough to dance for an hour or so in his bright light. But the witness that really confirms me far exceeds John’s witness. It’s the work the Father gave me to complete. These very tasks, as I go about completing them, confirm that the Father, in fact, sent me. The Father who sent me, confirmed me. And you missed it. You never heard his voice, you never saw his appearance. There is nothing left in your memory of his Message because you do not take his Messenger seriously.

39-40 “You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you’ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren’t willing to receive from me the life you say you want.
41-44 “I’m not interested in crowd approval. And do you know why? Because I know you and your crowds. I know that love, especially God’s love, is not on your working agenda. I came with the authority of my Father, and you either dismiss me or avoid me. If another came, acting self-important, you would welcome him with open arms. How do you expect to get anywhere with God when you spend all your time jockeying for position with each other, ranking your rivals and ignoring God?
45-47 “But don’t think I’m going to accuse you before my Father. Moses, in whom you put so much stock, is your accuser. If you believed, really believed, what Moses said, you would believe me. He wrote of me. If you won’t take seriously what he wrote, how can I expect you to take seriously what I speak?”

The Healing at the Pool
5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.
41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)
45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
