¹⁰ If you keep my commands,^(A) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. ¹¹ I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.^{(B) 12} My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.^{(C) 13} Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.^{(D) 14} You are my friends^(E) if you do what I command.^{(F) 15} I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.^{(G) 16} You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you^(H) so that you might go and bear fruit^(I)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.^{(J) 17} This is my command: Love each other.^(K)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(L) keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(M) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^{(N) 20} Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’^[a](O) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.^(P) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
