马利亚用香膏抹主
12 逾越节前六日，耶稣来到伯大尼，就是他叫拉撒路从死里复活之处。 2 有人在那里给耶稣预备筵席，马大伺候，拉撒路也在那同耶稣坐席的人中。 3 马利亚就拿着一斤极贵的真哪哒香膏，抹耶稣的脚，又用自己的头发去擦，屋里就满了膏的香气。 4 有一个门徒，就是那将要卖耶稣的加略人犹大， 5 说：“这香膏为什么不卖三十两银子周济穷人呢？” 6 他说这话，并不是挂念穷人，乃因他是个贼，又带着钱囊，常取其中所存的。 7 耶稣说：“由她吧！她是为我安葬之日存留的。 8 因为常有穷人和你们同在，只是你们不常有我。”
9 有许多犹太人知道耶稣在那里，就来了，不但是为耶稣的缘故，也是要看他从死里所复活的拉撒路。 10 但祭司长商议连拉撒路也要杀了， 11 因有好些犹太人为拉撒路的缘故，回去信了耶稣。
主骑驴进耶路撒冷
12 第二天，有许多上来过节的人听见耶稣将到耶路撒冷， 13 就拿着棕树枝出去迎接他，喊着说：“和散那！奉主名来的以色列王是应当称颂的！” 14 耶稣得了一个驴驹，就骑上，如经上所记的说： 15 “锡安的民[a]哪，不要惧怕！你的王骑着驴驹来了。” 16 这些事门徒起先不明白，等到耶稣得了荣耀以后，才想起这话是指着他写的，并且众人果然向他这样行了。 17 当耶稣呼唤拉撒路，叫他从死复活出坟墓的时候，同耶稣在那里的众人就作见证。 18 众人因听见耶稣行了这神迹，就去迎接他。 19 法利赛人彼此说：“看哪，你们是徒劳无益，世人都随从他去了！”
20 那时，上来过节礼拜的人中，有几个希腊人。 21 他们来见加利利伯赛大的腓力，求他说：“先生，我们愿意见耶稣。” 22 腓力去告诉安得烈，安得烈同腓力去告诉耶稣。
耶稣向百姓末了的讲论
23 耶稣说：“人子得荣耀的时候到了。 24 我实实在在地告诉你们：一粒麦子不落在地里死了，仍旧是一粒；若是死了，就结出许多子粒来。 25 爱惜自己生命的，就失丧生命；在这世上恨恶自己生命的，就要保守生命到永生。 26 若有人服侍我，就当跟从我；我在哪里，服侍我的人也要在哪里。若有人服侍我，我父必尊重他。 27 我现在心里忧愁，我说什么才好呢？父啊，救我脱离这时候！但我原是为这时候来的。 28 父啊，愿你荣耀你的名！”当时就有声音从天上来说：“我已经荣耀了我的名，还要再荣耀。” 29 站在旁边的众人听见，就说：“打雷了。”还有人说：“有天使对他说话。”
主要吸引万人归己
30 耶稣说：“这声音不是为我，是为你们来的。 31 现在这世界受审判，这世界的王要被赶出去。 32 我若从地上被举起来，就要吸引万人来归我。” 33 耶稣这话原是指着自己将要怎样死说的。 34 众人回答说：“我们听见律法上有话说基督是永存的，你怎么说人子必须被举起来呢？这人子是谁呢？” 35 耶稣对他们说：“光在你们中间还有不多的时候，应当趁着有光行走，免得黑暗临到你们。那在黑暗里行走的，不知道往何处去。 36 你们应当趁着有光，信从这光，使你们成为光明之子。”
应验以赛亚的预言
37 耶稣说了这话，就离开他们隐藏了。他虽然在他们面前行了许多神迹，他们还是不信他。 38 这是要应验先知以赛亚的话说：“主啊，我们所传的有谁信呢？主的膀臂向谁显露呢？” 39 他们所以不能信，因为以赛亚又说： 40 “主叫他们瞎了眼，硬了心，免得他们眼睛看见，心里明白，回转过来，我就医治他们。” 41 以赛亚因为看见他的荣耀，就指着他说这话。 42 虽然如此，官长中却有好些信他的，只因法利赛人的缘故，就不承认，恐怕被赶出会堂。 43 这是因他们爱人的荣耀过于爱神的荣耀。
信子就是信父
44 耶稣大声说：“信我的，不是信我，乃是信那差我来的。 45 人看见我，就是看见那差我来的。 46 我到世上来，乃是光，叫凡信我的不住在黑暗里。 47 若有人听见我的话不遵守，我不审判他。我来本不是要审判世界，乃是要拯救世界。 48 弃绝我、不领受我话的人，有审判他的，就是我所讲的道在末日要审判他。 49 因为我没有凭着自己讲，唯有差我来的父已经给我命令，叫我说什么、讲什么。 50 我也知道他的命令就是永生。故此，我所讲的话正是照着父对我所说的。”

Jesús es ungido en Betania

12 Seis días antes de la pascua, vino Jesús a Betania, donde estaba Lázaro, el que había estado muerto, y a quien había resucitado de los muertos. 2 Y le hicieron allí una cena; Marta servía, y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban sentados a la mesa con él. 3 Entonces María tomó una libra de perfume de nardo puro, de mucho precio, y ungió los pies de Jesús, y los enjugó con sus cabellos;(A) y la casa se llenó del olor del perfume. 4 Y dijo uno de sus discípulos, Judas Iscariote hijo de Simón, el que le había de entregar: 5 ¿Por qué no fue este perfume vendido por trescientos denarios, y dado a los pobres? 6 Pero dijo esto, no porque se cuidara de los pobres, sino porque era ladrón, y teniendo la bolsa, sustraía de lo que se echaba en ella. 7 Entonces Jesús dijo: Déjala; para el día de mi sepultura ha guardado esto. 8 Porque a los pobres siempre los tendréis con vosotros,(B) mas a mí no siempre me tendréis.
El complot contra Lázaro
9 Gran multitud de los judíos supieron entonces que él estaba allí, y vinieron, no solamente por causa de Jesús, sino también para ver a Lázaro, a quien había resucitado de los muertos. 10 Pero los principales sacerdotes acordaron dar muerte también a Lázaro, 11 porque a causa de él muchos de los judíos se apartaban y creían en Jesús.
La entrada triunfal en Jerusalén

12 El siguiente día, grandes multitudes que habían venido a la fiesta, al oír que Jesús venía a Jerusalén, 13 tomaron ramas de palmera y salieron a recibirle, y clamaban: ¡Hosanna!(C) ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor,(D) el Rey de Israel! 14 Y halló Jesús un asnillo, y montó sobre él, como está escrito:
16 Estas cosas no las entendieron sus discípulos al principio; pero cuando Jesús fue glorificado, entonces se acordaron de que estas cosas estaban escritas acerca de él, y de que se las habían hecho. 17 Y daba testimonio la gente que estaba con él cuando llamó a Lázaro del sepulcro, y le resucitó de los muertos. 18 Por lo cual también había venido la gente a recibirle, porque había oído que él había hecho esta señal. 19 Pero los fariseos dijeron entre sí: Ya veis que no conseguís nada. Mirad, el mundo se va tras él.
Unos griegos buscan a Jesús
20 Había ciertos griegos entre los que habían subido a adorar en la fiesta. 21 Estos, pues, se acercaron a Felipe, que era de Betsaida de Galilea, y le rogaron, diciendo: Señor, quisiéramos ver a Jesús. 22 Felipe fue y se lo dijo a Andrés; entonces Andrés y Felipe se lo dijeron a Jesús. 23 Jesús les respondió diciendo: Ha llegado la hora para que el Hijo del Hombre sea glorificado. 24 De cierto, de cierto os digo, que si el grano de trigo no cae en la tierra y muere, queda solo; pero si muere, lleva mucho fruto. 25 El que ama su vida, la perderá; y el que aborrece su vida en este mundo, para vida eterna la guardará.(F) 26 Si alguno me sirve, sígame; y donde yo estuviere, allí también estará mi servidor. Si alguno me sirviere, mi Padre le honrará.
Jesús anuncia su muerte
27 Ahora está turbada mi alma; ¿y qué diré? ¿Padre, sálvame de esta hora? Mas para esto he llegado a esta hora. 28 Padre, glorifica tu nombre. Entonces vino una voz del cielo: Lo he glorificado, y lo glorificaré otra vez. 29 Y la multitud que estaba allí, y había oído la voz, decía que había sido un trueno. Otros decían: Un ángel le ha hablado. 30 Respondió Jesús y dijo: No ha venido esta voz por causa mía, sino por causa de vosotros. 31 Ahora es el juicio de este mundo; ahora el príncipe de este mundo será echado fuera. 32 Y yo, si fuere levantado de la tierra, a todos atraeré a mí mismo. 33 Y decía esto dando a entender de qué muerte iba a morir. 34 Le respondió la gente: Nosotros hemos oído de la ley, que el Cristo permanece para siempre.(G) ¿Cómo, pues, dices tú que es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea levantado? ¿Quién es este Hijo del Hombre? 35 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Aún por un poco está la luz entre vosotros; andad entre tanto que tenéis luz, para que no os sorprendan las tinieblas; porque el que anda en tinieblas, no sabe a dónde va. 36 Entre tanto que tenéis la luz, creed en la luz, para que seáis hijos de luz.
Incredulidad de los judíos
Estas cosas habló Jesús, y se fue y se ocultó de ellos. 37 Pero a pesar de que había hecho tantas señales delante de ellos, no creían en él; 38 para que se cumpliese la palabra del profeta Isaías, que dijo:
Señor, ¿quién ha creído a nuestro anuncio?
¿Y a quién se ha revelado el brazo del Señor?(H)
39 Por esto no podían creer, porque también dijo Isaías:
40 Cegó los ojos de ellos, y endureció su corazón;
Para que no vean con los ojos, y entiendan con el corazón,
Y se conviertan, y yo los sane.(I)
41 Isaías dijo esto cuando vio su gloria, y habló acerca de él. 42 Con todo eso, aun de los gobernantes, muchos creyeron en él; pero a causa de los fariseos no lo confesaban, para no ser expulsados de la sinagoga. 43 Porque amaban más la gloria de los hombres que la gloria de Dios.
Las palabras de Jesús juzgarán a los hombres
44 Jesús clamó y dijo: El que cree en mí, no cree en mí, sino en el que me envió; 45 y el que me ve, ve al que me envió. 46 Yo, la luz, he venido al mundo, para que todo aquel que cree en mí no permanezca en tinieblas. 47 Al que oye mis palabras, y no las guarda, yo no le juzgo; porque no he venido a juzgar al mundo, sino a salvar al mundo. 48 El que me rechaza, y no recibe mis palabras, tiene quien le juzgue; la palabra que he hablado, ella le juzgará en el día postrero. 49 Porque yo no he hablado por mi propia cuenta; el Padre que me envió, él me dio mandamiento de lo que he de decir, y de lo que he de hablar. 50 Y sé que su mandamiento es vida eterna. Así pues, lo que yo hablo, lo hablo como el Padre me lo ha dicho.

12 Seis días antes de la Pascua llegó Jesús a Betania, donde vivía Lázaro, a quien Jesús había resucitado. 2 Allí se dio una cena en honor de Jesús. Marta servía y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban a la mesa con él. 3 María tomó entonces como medio litro[a] de nardo puro, que era un perfume muy caro, y lo derramó sobre los pies de Jesús, secándoselos luego con sus cabellos. Y la casa se llenó de la fragancia del perfume.
4 Judas Iscariote, que era uno de sus discípulos y que más tarde lo traicionaría, objetó:
5 —¿Por qué no se vendió este perfume? Pudo haberse vendido por el salario de más de un año de trabajo[b] y dárselo a los pobres.
6 Dijo esto no porque se interesara por los pobres, sino porque era un ladrón y, como tenía a su cargo la bolsa del dinero, acostumbraba a robarse lo que echaban en ella.
7 —Déjala en paz —respondió Jesús—. Ella ha estado guardando este perfume para el día de mi sepultura.[c] 8 A los pobres siempre los tendrán con ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán.
9 Mientras tanto, muchos de los judíos se enteraron de que Jesús estaba allí y fueron a ver no solo a Jesús, sino también a Lázaro, a quien Jesús había resucitado. 10 Entonces los jefes de los sacerdotes decidieron matar también a Lázaro, 11 pues por su causa muchos se apartaban de los judíos y creían en Jesús.
La entrada triunfal(A)
12 Al día siguiente, muchos de los que habían ido a la fiesta se enteraron de que Jesús se dirigía a Jerusalén. 13 Tomaron ramas de palma y salieron a recibirlo mientras gritaban a voz en cuello:
—¡Hosanna![d]
—¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor![e]
—¡Bendito el Rey de Israel!
14 Jesús encontró un burrito y se montó en él, como dice la Escritura:
15 «No temas, oh hija de Sión;
mira, que aquí viene tu rey,
montado sobre un burrito».[f]
16 Al principio, sus discípulos no entendieron lo que sucedía. Solo después de que Jesús fue glorificado se dieron cuenta de que se había cumplido en él lo que de él ya estaba escrito.
17 La gente que había estado con Jesús cuando él llamó a Lázaro del sepulcro y lo resucitó de entre los muertos seguía difundiendo la noticia. 18 Muchos de los que se habían enterado de la señal milagrosa realizada por Jesús salían a su encuentro. 19 Por eso los fariseos comentaban entre sí: «Como pueden ver, así no hemos logrado nada. ¡Miren cómo lo sigue todo el mundo!».
Jesús predice su muerte
20 Entre los que habían subido a adorar en la fiesta había algunos griegos. 21 Estos se acercaron a Felipe, que era de Betsaida de Galilea, y le pidieron:
—Señor, queremos ver a Jesús.
22 Felipe fue a decírselo a Andrés y ambos fueron a decírselo a Jesús.
23 —Ha llegado la hora de que el Hijo del hombre sea glorificado —afirmó Jesús—. 24 Les aseguro que, si la semilla de trigo no cae en tierra y muere, se queda solo. Pero si muere, produce mucho fruto. 25 El que ama su vida la pierde; en cambio, el que aborrece su vida en este mundo la conserva para la vida eterna. 26 Quien quiera servirme debe seguirme; y donde yo esté, allí también estará mi siervo. A quien me sirva, mi Padre lo honrará.
27 »Ahora mi alma está angustiada, ¿y acaso voy a decir: “Padre, sálvame de esta hora difícil”? ¡Si precisamente para afrontarla he venido! 28 ¡Padre, glorifica tu nombre!
Se oyó entonces, desde el cielo, una voz que decía: «Ya lo he glorificado y volveré a glorificarlo». 29 La multitud que estaba allí y que oyó la voz decía que había sido un trueno; otros decían que un ángel le había hablado.
30 —Esa voz no vino por mí, sino por ustedes —dijo Jesús—. 31 El juicio de este mundo ha llegado ya y el príncipe de este mundo va a ser expulsado. 32 Pero yo, cuando sea levantado de la tierra, atraeré a todos a mí mismo.
33 Con esto daba Jesús a entender de qué manera iba a morir.
34 —De la Ley hemos sabido —le respondió la gente—, que el Cristo permanecerá para siempre; ¿cómo, pues, dices que el Hijo del hombre tiene que ser levantado? ¿Quién es ese Hijo del hombre?
35 —Ustedes van a tener la luz solo un poco más de tiempo —les dijo Jesús—. Caminen mientras tengan la luz, antes de que los envuelva la oscuridad. El que camina en la oscuridad no sabe a dónde va. 36 Mientras tengan la luz, crean en ella para que sean hijos de la luz.
Cuando terminó de hablar, Jesús se fue y se escondió de ellos.
Los judíos siguen en su incredulidad
37 A pesar de haber hecho Jesús todas estas señales en presencia de ellos, todavía no creían en él. 38 Así se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Isaías:
«Señor, ¿quién ha creído a nuestro mensaje
y a quién se ha revelado el brazo del Señor?».[g]
39 Por eso no podían creer, pues también había dicho Isaías:
40 «Les ha cegado los ojos
y endurecido el corazón,
para que no vean con los ojos
ni entiendan con el corazón
ni se arrepientan; y yo los sane».[h]
41 Esto lo dijo Isaías porque vio la gloria de Jesús y habló de él.
42 Sin embargo, muchos de ellos, incluso muchos de los jefes, creyeron en él, pero no lo confesaban porque temían que los fariseos los expulsaran de la sinagoga. 43 Preferían recibir honores de los hombres más que de parte de Dios.
44 «El que cree en mí —clamó Jesús con voz fuerte—, cree no solo en mí, sino en el que me envió. 45 Y el que me ve a mí ve al que me envió. 46 Yo soy la luz que ha venido al mundo para que todo el que crea en mí no viva en oscuridad.
47 »Si alguno escucha mis palabras, pero no las obedece, no seré yo quien lo juzgue; pues no vine a condenar al mundo, sino a salvarlo. 48 El que me rechaza y no acepta mis palabras tiene quien lo juzgue. La palabra que yo he proclamado lo condenará en el día final. 49 Yo no he hablado por mi propia cuenta; el Padre que me envió me ordenó qué decir y cómo decirlo. 50 Y sé muy bien que su mandato es vida eterna. Así que todo lo que digo es lo que el Padre me ha ordenado decir».

12 Six days before Pesach, Yeshua came to Beit-Anyah, where El‘azar lived, the man Yeshua had raised from the dead; 2 so they gave a dinner there in his honor. Marta served the meal, and El‘azar was among those at the table with him. 3 Miryam took a whole pint of pure oil of spikenard, which is very expensive, poured it on Yeshua’s feet and wiped his feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of the talmidim, Y’hudah from K’riot, the one who was about to betray him, said, 5 “This perfume is worth a year’s wages! Why wasn’t it sold and the money given to the poor?” 6 Now he said this not out of concern for the poor, but because he was a thief — he was in charge of the common purse and used to steal from it. 7 Yeshua said, “Leave her alone! She kept this for the day of my burial. 8 You always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 A large crowd of Judeans learned that he was there; and they came not only because of Yeshua, but also so that they could see El‘azar, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 The head cohanim then decided to do away with El‘azar too, 11 since it was because of him that large numbers of the Judeans were leaving their leaders and putting their trust in Yeshua.
12 The next day, the large crowd that had come for the festival heard that Yeshua was on his way into Yerushalayim. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Deliver us!”[a]
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of Adonai,[b] the King of Isra’el!”
14 After finding a donkey colt, Yeshua mounted it, just as the Tanakh says —
15 “Daughter of Tziyon, don’t be afraid!
Look! your King is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt.”[c]
16 His talmidim did not understand this at first; but after Yeshua had been glorified, then they remembered that the Tanakh said this about him, and that they had done this for him. 17 The group that had been with him when he called El‘azar out of the tomb and raised him from the dead had been telling about it. 18 It was because of this too that the crowd came out to meet him — they had heard that he had performed this miracle. 19 The P’rushim said to each other, “Look, you’re getting nowhere! Why, the whole world has gone after him!”
20 Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greek-speaking Jews. 21 They approached Philip, the one from Beit-Tzaidah in the Galil, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Yeshua.” 22 Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Yeshua. 23 Yeshua gave them this answer: “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Yes, indeed! I tell you that unless a grain of wheat that falls to the ground dies, it stays just a grain; but if it dies, it produces a big harvest. 25 He who loves his life loses it, but he who hates his life in this world will keep it safe right on into eternal life! 26 If someone is serving me, let him follow me; wherever I am, my servant will be there too. My Father will honor anyone who serves me.
27 “Now I am in turmoil. What can I say — ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. I will say this: 28 ‘Father, glorify your name!’” At this a bat-kol came out of heaven, “I have glorified it before, and I will glorify it again!” 29 The crowd standing there and hearing it said that it had thundered; others said, “An angel spoke to him.” 30 Yeshua answered, “This bat-kol did not come for my sake but for yours. 31 Now is the time for this world to be judged, now the ruler of this world will be expelled. 32 As for me, when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” 33 He said this to indicate what kind of death he would die.
34 The crowd answered, “We have learned from the Torah that the Messiah remains forever. How is it that you say the Son of Man has to be ‘lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?” 35 Yeshua said to them, “The light will be with you only a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, or the dark will overtake you; he who walks in the dark doesn’t know where he’s going. 36 While you have the light, put your trust in the light, so that you may become people of light.” Yeshua said these things, then went off and kept himself hidden from them.
37 Even though he had performed so many miracles in their presence, they still did not put their trust in him, 38 in order that what Yesha‘yahu the prophet had said might be fulfilled,
“Adonai, who has believed our report?
To whom has the arm of Adonai been revealed?”[d]
39 The reason they could not believe was — as Yesha‘yahu said elsewhere —
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so that they do not see with their eyes,
understand with their hearts,
and do t’shuvah,
so that I could heal them.”[e]
41 (Yesha‘yahu said these things because he saw the Sh’khinah of Yeshua and spoke about him.) 42 Nevertheless, many of the leaders did trust in him; but because of the P’rushim they did not say so openly, out of fear of being banned from the synagogue; 43 for they loved praise from other people more than praise from God.
44 Yeshua declared publicly, “Those who put their trust in me are trusting not merely in me, but in the One who sent me. 45 Also those who see me see the One who sent me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who trusts in me might not remain in the dark. 47 If anyone hears what I am saying and does not observe it, I don’t judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 Those who reject me and don’t accept what I say have a judge — the word which I have spoken will judge them on the Last Day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own initiative, but the Father who sent me has given me a command, namely, what to say and how to say it. 50 And I know that his command is eternal life. So what I say is simply what the Father has told me to say.”

It was worth a year’s wages.[b]” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(H) he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(I) 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c](J) but you will not always have me.”
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(K) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(L) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(M)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(N)
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches(O) and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna![d]”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”(Q)
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.(S) Only after Jesus was glorified(T) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him(U) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(V) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(W)
Jesus Predicts His Death
20 Now there were some Greeks(X) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(Y) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 Jesus replied, “The hour(Z) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(AA) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(AB) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(AC) for eternal life.(AD) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(AE) My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 “Now my soul is troubled,(AF) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(AG) save me from this hour’?(AH) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven,(AI) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(AJ) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(AK) now the prince of this world(AL) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[g] from the earth,(AM) will draw all people to myself.”(AN) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(AP) that the Messiah will remain forever,(AQ) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AR) must be lifted up’?(AS) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(AT) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(AU) before darkness overtakes you.(AV) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AW) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AX)
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AY) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[i](BA)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(BB) and spoke about him.(BC)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(BD) But because of the Pharisees(BE) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(BF) 43 for they loved human praise(BG) more than praise from God.(BH)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(BI) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(BJ) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(BK) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(BL) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(BM) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(BN) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(BO) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(BP)
