牧人与他的羊群
10 “我实话告诉你们，一个人进羊圈，如果不从门进，而是通过其它方式进去，他就是贼，是强盗。 2 从圈门进的人是羊群的牧人， 3 看门的人为他打开门，羊群听从他的声音，他点名叫他的羊，带它们出去。 4 它们被放出去后，他又走在羊群前面，羊群跟随着他，因为它们认得他的声音。 5 它们绝不会跟随陌生人走，相反，它们会从生人身边跑开，因为，它们不认陌生人的声音。” 6 耶稣给他们用了这个比喻，但是，他们却不明白他的意思。
耶稣是好牧人
7 耶稣又说∶“我实话告诉你们，我就是羊圈的门。 8 在我之前来的人都是小偷、强盗，而且羊群也不听他们的。 9 我就是这扇门，从我这扇门进来的人将得救。他既能进又能出，他将会找到牧场。 10 小偷来只会偷、会杀、会破坏。我来是为了让他们获得生命—那是富足和美好的生命。
11 “我是个好牧人，好牧人会为羊群献出生命， 12 雇工不是牧人，羊群也不是他的，所以当他看到狼来时，就会丢下羊群逃跑，狼袭击羊群，驱散它们。 13 雇工是雇来的，所以，他不关心羊群。
14 “我是个好牧人，我认识我的羊，我的羊也认识我， 15 就像父亲认识我，我也认识父亲一样。我为羊群献出了生命， 16 我还有些羊，它们不属于这个羊群，我也得把它们带来。它们也会听我的声音，并且要合成一群，由一个人放牧。 17 父爱我是因为我献出了自己的生命。我献出了自己的生命为的是我能重新得到它，没有人能从我这里把生命夺走。 18 我是心甘情愿地牺牲它的。我有权牺牲它的，也有权收回它，这条命令是我从我父亲那里领受的。”
19 因为这段话，犹太人之间又发生了分歧。 20 他们当中许多人说∶“他被鬼附体，神志不清，你们为什么还要听他的呢？”
21 另外一些人却说∶“这些话不是被鬼附体的人能说的，鬼能让瞎子睁开眼睛吗？”
犹太首领反对耶稣
22 他们到耶路撒冷过修殿节 [a]，此时正值冬季， 23 耶稣走在大殿院所罗门廊 [b]里， 24 犹太人围着他问∶“你还要让我们猜多久呢？如果你是基督，就坦白告诉我们。”
25 耶稣回答他们说∶“我已经告诉你们了，你们却不信，我以我父的名义所行的奇迹为我作证， 26 但是，你们也不信，因为你们不是我羊群里的羊， 27 我的羊听我的话，我认识他们，他们跟我走， 28 我赐给他们永生，他们永不会灭亡，没有人能从我手里把它们夺走。 29 我父赐给我的羊比任何事情都重要，没有人能从我父手中把它们夺走。 30 父和我是一体。”
31 犹太人又抓起石头打他， 32 耶稣说∶“我让你们看到了父亲的许多善迹，你们为了哪桩善迹而打我呢？”
33 犹太人说∶“我们不是因为善迹而打你，我们打你，是因为你亵渎上帝，你一个凡人竟想把自己树为上帝！”
34 耶稣说∶“你们律法上难道没有写着‘我（上帝）说过你们是诸神。’ [c]吗？ 35 《经》称那些领受过上帝的信息的人为神，《经》上的话总是真实的。 36 那么为什么因为我说‘我是上帝之子’，你们却说我在亵渎上帝呢？我是上帝所挑选并被派遣到世上的那位。 37 如果我不是做我父的工作，就不要相信我， 38 可是，如果我做了，即使你们不相信我，也该相信这些工作，使你们能意识到父中有我，我中有父。”
39 他们又试图逮捕他，但是，他却从他们手底下逃脱了。 40 耶稣渡过约旦河，回到以前约翰施洗礼的地方，在那里住了下来。 41 许多人来到他身边说∶“约翰虽然没有行过任何奇迹，可他说的有关这个人的话都是真的！” 42 于是，那里有许多人信仰了他。

10 Jezus zei: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: iemand die niet door de deur van de stal binnenkomt, maar op een andere manier naar binnen klimt, is een dief en een rover. 2 Maar de man die door de deur binnenkomt, is de herder van de schapen. 3 De man die bij de deur de wacht houdt, doet voor hem open en de schapen luisteren naar hem. Hij roept zijn schapen bij hun naam en neemt ze mee naar buiten. 4 Wanneer hij al zijn schapen naar buiten heeft gebracht, gaat hij voor ze uit. En de schapen volgen hem, omdat ze zijn stem kennen. 5 Maar een vreemde zullen ze niet volgen. Ze zullen bij hem weglopen, omdat ze zijn stem niet kennen."
6 Jezus vertelde hun dit verhaal, maar ze begrepen niet wat Hij ermee bedoelde. 7 Jezus vertelde verder: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: IK BEN[a] de deur van de schapen. 8 Alle mensen die vóór Mij binnen zijn gekomen, zijn dieven en rovers. Maar de schapen hebben niet naar hen geluisterd. 9 IK BEN de deur. Als iemand door Mij binnenkomt, zal hij worden gered. Hij zal naar binnen gaan en naar buiten gaan en hij zal het goed hebben. 10 Maar een dief komt alleen maar om te stelen en te doden en te vernietigen. Ik ben gekomen om leven te geven en overvloed.
11 IK BEN de goede herder.[b] Een goede herder heeft zijn leven over voor de schapen. 12 Maar een gehuurde knecht slaat op de vlucht als hij een wolf ziet aankomen. Hij laat de schapen in de steek en de wolf jaagt de schapen uit elkaar en doodt ze. De knecht vlucht, omdat hij niet zelf de eigenaar van de schapen is. 13 Daarom geeft hij niet echt om de schapen. 14 IK BEN de goede Herder. Ik ken mijn schapen en mijn schapen kennen Mij. 15 Net zoals de Vader Mij kent en Ik de Vader ken. Ik heb mijn leven over voor de schapen. 16 Ik heb ook nog andere schapen, die niet bij deze stal horen. Die moet Ik ook bij deze kudde brengen en ze zullen naar mijn stem luisteren. En uiteindelijk zal er nog maar één kudde zijn, met één Herder. 17 De Vader houdt van Mij, omdat Ik vrijwillig mijn leven neerleg en het later weer opneem. 18 Niemand neemt Mij mijn leven af. Ik leg Zelf mijn leven neer. Ik heb de macht om mijn leven neer te leggen en de macht om het weer op te nemen. De Vader heeft Mij de opdracht gegeven om dat te doen."
19 De Joden kregen weer ruzie met elkaar over wat Jezus zei. 20 Veel van hen zeiden: "Er zit een duivelse geest in Hem! Hij is gek! Waarom luisteren jullie nog naar Hem?" 21 Anderen zeiden: "Iemand met een duivelse geest zegt zulke dingen niet. Bovendien kan een duivelse geest toch geen blinde ogen genezen?"
Jezus op het feest van de herbouw van de tempel
22 Het was winter en het jaarlijkse feest begon waarop wordt gevierd dat de tempel in Jeruzalem herbouwd was. 23 Jezus wandelde in de tempel, in de 'Zuilengang van Salomo'. 24 De Joden gingen om Hem heen staan en zeiden tegen Hem: "Hoelang gaat U ons nog in spanning houden? Als U echt de Messias bent, zeg het ons dan eerlijk." 25 Jezus antwoordde: "Dat heb Ik jullie al gezegd, maar jullie geloven Mij niet. De dingen die Ik namens mijn Vader doe, laten duidelijk zien wie Ik ben. 26 Maar jullie geloven Mij niet, omdat jullie niet bij mijn schapen horen. Dat heb Ik jullie al gezegd. 27 Mijn schapen luisteren naar mijn stem, en Ik ken ze, en ze volgen Mij. 28 En Ik geef hun het eeuwige leven. Ze zullen tot in eeuwigheid niet verloren gaan. Ze zijn van Mij en niemand zal ze uit mijn handen kunnen roven. 29 Mijn Vader heeft hen aan Mij gegeven. Hij is machtiger dan wie dan ook. Niemand kan iets uit de handen van mijn Vader roven. 30 Ik en de Vader zijn helemaal één."
31 De Joden begonnen weer stenen aan te slepen om Hem daarmee dood te gooien. 32 Maar Jezus zei: "Ik heb laten zien wat voor geweldige dingen mijn Vader doet. Om welke van die dingen willen jullie Mij nu doden?" 33 De Joden antwoordden Hem: "We willen U niet doden vanwege de goede dingen die U doet, maar omdat U God beledigt. Want U, een mens, zegt van Uzelf dat U God bent." 34 Jezus antwoordde hun: "Er staat toch in de Boeken: 'Ik heb gezegd: jullie zijn goden'?[c] 35 God noemt de mensen dus goden als Hij tegen hen spreekt, en we moeten ons houden aan wat er in de Boeken staat. 36 Ik ben speciaal door de Vader geroepen om naar de wereld te gaan. Waarom zeggen jullie dan dat Ik God beledig, als Ik zeg dat Ik Gods Zoon ben? 37 Als Ik níet doe wat mijn Vader zegt, geloof Mij dan maar niet. 38 Maar als Ik dat wél doe en jullie Mij toch niet geloven, geloof dan de dingen die Ik doe. Dan zullen jullie moeten toegeven dat de Vader één met Mij is en Ik één ben met de Vader." 39 Toen probeerden ze opnieuw Hem te grijpen, maar Hij wist te ontkomen.
40 Hij vertrok weer naar de overkant van de Jordaan. Hij ging naar de plaats waar Johannes de eerste keer doopte. Daar bleef Hij. 41 En er kwamen veel mensen naar Hem toe. Ze zeiden: "Johannes deed wel geen wonderen, maar alles wat hij over deze Man heeft gezegd, is waar." 42 En veel mensen daar geloofden in Hem.

- Johannes 10:7 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het Oude Testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.

The Good Shepherd
10 ‘Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber.(A) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd(B) of the sheep.(C) 3 The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.’ 6 Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand(D) what he was telling them.
7 Jesus said again, ‘Truly I tell you, I am(E) the gate for the sheep.(F) 8 All who came before me[a] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. 9 I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal(G) and kill and destroy.(H) I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
11 ‘I am the good shepherd.(I) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(J) 12 The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them[b] and runs away when he sees a wolf(K) coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. 13 This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.
14 ‘I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father.(L) I lay down my life(M) for the sheep. 16 But I have other sheep(N) that are not from this sheepfold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.(O) 17 This is why the Father loves me,(P) because I lay down my life(Q) so that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’(R)
19 Again the Jews were divided(S) because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, ‘He has a demon(T) and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him? ’ 21 Others were saying, ‘These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? ’(U)
Jesus at the Festival of Dedication
22 Then the Festival of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.(V) 24 The Jews surrounded him and asked, ‘How long are you going to keep us in suspense?[c] If you are the Messiah,(W) tell us plainly.’[d](X)
25 ‘I did tell you and you don’t believe,’ Jesus answered them. ‘The works(Y) that I do in my Father’s name testify about me. 26 But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.[e](Z) 27 My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life,(AA) and they will never perish.(AB) No one will snatch(AC) them out of my hand. 29 My Father,(AD) who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.’(AE)
Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus
31 Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone him.(AF)
32 Jesus replied, ‘I have shown you many good works(AG) from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me? ’
33 ‘We aren’t stoning(AH) you for a good work,’ the Jews answered, ‘but for blasphemy, because you – being a man – make yourself God.’
34 Jesus answered them, ‘Isn’t it written in your law,[f] I said, you are gods?(AI)[g] 35 If he called those to whom the word(AJ) of God came “gods” – and the Scripture(AK) cannot be broken – 36 do you say, “You are blaspheming” to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?(AL) 37 If I am not doing my Father’s works,(AM) don’t believe me. 38 But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand[h] that the Father is in me and I in the Father.’(AN) 39 Then they were trying again to seize him,(AO) but he escaped their grasp.(AP)
Many beyond the Jordan Believe in Jesus
40 So he departed again across the Jordan(AQ) to the place where John(AR) had been baptising earlier, and he remained there. 41 Many came to him(AS) and said, ‘John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.’ 42 And many believed in him there.

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep
10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(A) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(B) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(C) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(D) 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(E) 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech,(F) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(G)
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(H) the gate(I) for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me(J) are thieves and robbers,(K) but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(L) and have it to the full.(M)
11 “I am(N) the good shepherd.(O) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(P) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(Q) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd;(R) I know my sheep(S) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(T)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(U) 16 I have other sheep(V) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(W) and one shepherd.(X) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(Y)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(Z) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(AA)
19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(AB) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(AC) and raving mad.(AD) Why listen to him?”
21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(AE) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(AF)
Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims
22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[b] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(AG) 24 The Jews(AH) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(AI)
25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(AJ) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(AK) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(AL) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(AM) and they follow me.(AN) 28 I give them eternal life,(AO) and they shall never perish;(AP) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(AQ) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(AR) is greater than all[c];(AS) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(AT)
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(AU) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(AV)
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(AW) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[d]?(AX) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(AY) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(AZ)— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(BA) as his very own(BB) and sent into the world?(BC) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(BD) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(BE) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(BF) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(BG) but he escaped their grasp.(BH)
40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(BI) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(BJ) all that John said about this man was true.”(BK) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(BL)
