耶穌是好牧人
10 “我實實在在告訴你們，那不從門進羊圈，倒從別處爬進去的，那人就是賊，就是強盜； 2 那從門進去的，才是羊的牧人。 3 看門的給他開門，羊也聽他的聲音；他按著名字呼叫自己的羊，領牠們出來。 4 他把自己的羊領出來以後，就走在前頭，羊也跟隨他，因為認得他的聲音。 5 牠們決不會跟隨陌生人，反而逃避他，因為不認得陌生人的聲音。” 6 耶穌對他們說了這個譬喻，他們卻不明白他所說的是甚麼。
7 於是耶穌又說：“我實實在在告訴你們，我就是羊的門。 8 所有在我以先來的，都是賊和強盜；羊卻不聽從他們。 9 我就是門，如果有人藉著我進來，就必定得救，並且可以出、可以入，也可以找到草場。 10 賊來了，不過是要偷竊、殺害、毀壞；我來了，是要使羊得生命，並且得的更豐盛。 11 我是好牧人，好牧人為羊捨命。 12 那作雇工不是牧人的，羊也不是自己的，他一見狼來，就把羊撇下逃跑，狼就抓住羊群，把他們驅散了； 13 因為他是個雇工，對羊群漠不關心。 14 我是好牧人，我認識我的羊，我的羊也認識我， 15 好像父認識我，我也認識父一樣；並且我為羊捨命。 16 我還有別的羊，不在這羊圈裡；我必須把牠們領來，牠們也要聽我的聲音，並且要合成一群，歸於一個牧人。 17 父愛我，因為我把生命捨去，好再把它取回來。 18 沒有人能奪去我的生命，是我自己捨去的。我有權把生命捨去，也有權把它取回來；這是我從我的父所領受的命令。”
19 猶太人因著這些話又起了紛爭。 20 他們當中有許多人說：“他是鬼附的，他發瘋了；為甚麼要聽他呢？” 21 另外有人說：“這話不是鬼附的人所說的。鬼怎能使瞎子的眼睛開了呢？”
猶太人棄絕耶穌
22 在耶路撒冷，獻殿節到了，那時是冬天。 23 耶穌在殿的所羅門廊上走過， 24 猶太人圍著他，對他說：“你使我們心裡懸疑不定，要到幾時呢？如果你是基督，就公開地告訴我們吧！” 25 耶穌對他們說：“我已經告訴你們，你們卻不相信；我奉我父的名所作的事，可以為我作證。 26 只是你們不信，因為你們不是我的羊。 27 我的羊聽我的聲音，我也認識他們，他們也跟隨我。 28 我賜給他們永生，他們永不滅亡，誰也不能把他們從我手裡奪去。 29 那位把羊群賜給我的父比一切都大，也沒有人能把他們從我父的手裡奪去。 30 我與父原為一。”
31 猶太人又拿起石頭要打他。 32 耶穌對他們說：“我把許多從父那裡來的善事顯給你們看，你們因哪一件要用石頭打我呢？” 33 猶太人對他說：“我們不是因為善事用石頭打你，而是因為你說了僭妄的話；又因為你是個人，竟然把自己當作 神。” 34 耶穌說：“你們的律法上不是寫著‘我說你們是神’嗎？ 35 聖經是不能廢除的，如果那些承受 神的道的人， 神尚且稱他們是神， 36 那麼父所分別為聖又差到世上來的，他自稱是 神的兒子，你們就說他說了僭妄 神的話嗎？ 37 我若不作我父的事，你們就不必信我； 38 我若作了，你們縱然不信我，也應當信這些事，好使你們確實知道，我父是在我裡面，我也在父裡面。” 39 他們又要逮捕耶穌，他卻從他們的手中逃脫了。
40 耶穌又往約旦河東去，到約翰從前施洗的地方，住在那裡。 41 許多人到他那裡去，說：“約翰沒有行過一件神蹟，但約翰指著這人所說的一切話，都是真實的。” 42 在那裡就有許多人信了耶穌。

10 (A)«In verità, in verità vi dico che chi non entra per la porta nell’ovile delle pecore, ma vi sale da un’altra parte, è un ladro e un brigante. 2 Ma colui che entra per la porta è il pastore delle pecore. 3 A lui apre il portinaio, e le pecore ascoltano la sua voce; ed egli chiama le proprie pecore per nome e le conduce fuori. 4 Quando ha messo fuori tutte[a] le sue pecore, va davanti a loro, e le pecore lo seguono, perché conoscono la sua voce. 5 Ma un estraneo non lo seguiranno; anzi, fuggiranno via da lui perché non conoscono la voce degli estranei».
6 Questa similitudine disse loro Gesù; ma essi non capirono quali fossero le cose che diceva loro.
7 (B)Perciò Gesù di nuovo disse [loro]: «In verità, in verità vi dico: io sono la porta delle pecore. 8 Tutti quelli che sono venuti {prima di me}, sono stati ladri e briganti; ma le pecore non li hanno ascoltati. 9 Io sono la porta; se uno entra per me, sarà salvato, entrerà e uscirà, e troverà pastura. 10 Il ladro non viene se non per rubare, ammazzare e distruggere; io sono venuto perché abbiano la vita e l’abbiano in abbondanza.
11 Io sono il buon pastore; il buon pastore dà la sua vita per le pecore. 12 Il mercenario, che non è pastoree al quale non appartengono le pecore, vede venire il lupo, abbandona le pecore e si dà alla fuga (e il lupo le rapisce e le disperde[b]), 13 perché è mercenario e non si cura delle pecore[c]. 14 Io sono il buon pastore, e conosco le mie, e le mie conoscono me[d], 15 come il Padre mi conosce e io conosco il Padre, e do la mia vita per le pecore. 16 Ho anche altre pecore, che non sono di quest’ovile; anche quelle devo raccogliere, ed esse ascolteranno la mia voce, e vi sarà un solo gregge, un solo pastore. 17 Per questo mi ama il Padre; perché io depongo la mia vita per riprenderla poi. 18 Nessuno me la toglie, ma io la depongo da me. Ho il potere di deporla e ho il potere di riprenderla. Quest’ordine ho ricevuto dal Padre mio».
19 Nacque di nuovo[e] un dissenso tra i Giudei per queste parole. 20 Molti di loro dicevano: «Ha un demonio ed è fuori di sé; perché lo ascoltate?» 21 Altri dicevano: «Queste non sono parole di un indemoniato. Può un demonio aprire gli occhi ai ciechi?»
Gesù afferma la sua divinità
22 (C)In quel tempo ebbe luogo in Gerusalemme la festa della Dedicazione[f]. Era d’inverno, 23 e Gesù passeggiava nel tempio, sotto il portico di Salomone. 24 I Giudei dunque gli si fecero attorno e gli dissero: «Fino a quando terrai sospeso l’animo nostro? Se tu sei il Cristo, diccelo apertamente».
25 Gesù rispose loro: «Ve l’ho detto, e non lo credete; le opere che faccio nel nome del Padre mio, sono quelle che testimoniano di me; 26 ma voi non credete, perché non siete delle mie pecore [, come vi ho detto]. 27 Le mie pecore ascoltano la mia voce e io le conosco, ed esse mi seguono; 28 e io do loro la vita eterna, e non periranno mai, e nessuno le rapirà dalla mia mano. 29 Il Padre mio che me le ha date è più grande di tutti; e nessuno può rapirle dalla mano del Padre [mio]. 30 Io e il Padre siamo uno».
31 I Giudei presero di nuovo[g] delle pietre per lapidarlo.
32 Gesù disse loro: «Vi ho mostrato molte buone opere da parte del Padre [mio]; per quale di queste opere mi lapidate?» 33 I Giudei gli risposero [, dicendo]: «Non ti lapidiamo per una buona opera, ma per bestemmia, e perché tu, che sei uomo, ti fai Dio». 34 Gesù rispose loro: «Non sta scritto nella vostra legge:
“Io ho detto: voi siete dèi”[h]?
35 Se chiama dèi coloro ai quali la parola di Dio è stata diretta (e la Scrittura non può essere annullata), 36 a colui che il Padre ha santificato e mandato nel mondo voi dite: “Tu bestemmi”, perché ho detto: “Sono Figlio di Dio”? 37 Se non faccio le opere del Padre mio, non credetemi; 38 ma se le faccio, anche se non credete a me, credete alle opere, affinché sappiate e riconosciate[i] che il Padre è in me e io sono nel Padre[j]».
39 Essi {perciò} cercavano nuovamente di arrestarlo; ma egli sfuggì loro dalle mani.
40 (D)Gesù se ne andò di nuovo oltre il Giordano, dove Giovanni da principio battezzava, e là si trattenne. 41 Molti vennero a lui e dicevano: «Giovanni, è vero, non fece nessun segno; ma tutto quello che Giovanni disse di quest’uomo era vero». 42 E là molti credettero in lui.

The Ideal Shepherd
10 “I assure you: Anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the door but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.(A) 2 The one who enters by the door is the shepherd(B) of the sheep.(C) 3 The doorkeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. 5 They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t recognize the voice of strangers.”
6 Jesus gave them this illustration, but they did not understand(D) what He was telling them.
The Good Shepherd
7 So Jesus said again, “I assure you: I am(E) the door of the sheep.(F) 8 All who came before Me[a] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal(G) and to kill and to destroy.(H) I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
11 “I am the good shepherd.(I) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(J) 12 The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them[b] and runs away when he sees a wolf(K) coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. 13 This happens because he is a hired man and doesn’t care about the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd. I know My own sheep, and they know Me, 15 as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father.(L) I lay down My life(M) for the sheep. 16 But I have other sheep(N) that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.(O) 17 This is why the Father loves Me,(P) because I am laying down My life(Q) so I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father.”(R)
19 Again a division(S) took place among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon(T) and He’s crazy! Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(U)
Jesus at the Festival of Dedication
22 Then the Festival of Dedication[c] took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 Jesus was walking in the temple complex in Solomon’s Colonnade.[d](V) 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and asked, “How long are You going to keep us in suspense?[e] If You are the Messiah,(W) tell us plainly.”[f](X)
25 “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works(Y) that I do in My Father’s name testify about Me. 26 But you don’t believe because you are not My sheep.[g](Z) 27 My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. 28 I give them eternal life,(AA) and they will never perish(AB)—ever! No one will snatch(AC) them out of My hand. 29 My Father,(AD) who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”[h](AE)
Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus
31 Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone Him.(AF)
32 Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works(AG) from the Father. Which of these works are you stoning Me for?”
33 “We aren’t stoning(AH) You for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because You—being a man—make Yourself God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your scripture,[i] I said, you are gods?(AI)[j] 35 If He called those whom the word(AJ) of God came to ‘gods’—and the Scripture(AK) cannot be broken— 36 do you say, ‘You are blaspheming’ to the One the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?(AL) 37 If I am not doing My Father’s works,(AM) don’t believe Me. 38 But if I am doing them and you don’t believe Me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand[k] that the Father is in Me and I in the Father.”(AN) 39 Then they were trying again to seize Him,(AO) yet He eluded their grasp.(AP)
Many beyond the Jordan Believe in Jesus
40 So He departed again across the Jordan(AQ) to the place where John(AR) had been baptizing earlier, and He remained there. 41 Many came to Him(AS) and said, “John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.
