灵的分辨
4 亲爱的弟兄姊妹，不要什么灵都信，总要试验那些灵是否出于上帝，因为世上已经出现了许多假先知！ 2 任何灵若承认耶稣基督曾降世为人，就是从上帝来的，你们可以凭这一点认出上帝的灵。 3 任何灵若不承认耶稣，就不是从上帝来的，而是敌基督者的灵。以前你们听说敌基督者要来，现在他已经在世上了。
4 孩子们，你们属于上帝，你们已经胜过了那些假先知，因为在你们里面的圣灵比在世上运行的邪灵更有能力。 5 他们属于世界，所以他们谈论的都是世俗的事，世人也听从他们。 6 我们属于上帝，认识上帝的人听从我们，不属于上帝的人不听从我们。这样，我们就可以分辨真理的灵和错谬的灵。
上帝是爱
7 亲爱的弟兄姊妹，我们应当彼此相爱，因为爱是从上帝来的。凡有爱心的人都是从上帝生的，并且认识上帝。 8 没有爱心的人不认识上帝，因为上帝就是爱。 9 上帝差遣祂独一的儿子到世上来，是为了叫我们靠着祂得到生命。这就显明了上帝对我们的爱。 10 不是我们爱上帝，而是上帝爱我们，并且差遣祂儿子为我们的罪作了赎罪祭，这就是爱。
11 亲爱的弟兄姊妹，上帝既然这样爱我们，我们也应该彼此相爱。 12 从来没有人见过上帝，如果我们彼此相爱，上帝就住在我们里面，祂的爱就在我们里面得到成全。
13 上帝将祂的灵赐给了我们，所以我们知道自己住在祂里面，祂也住在我们里面。 14 我们看见过，现在做见证：父差遣了祂的儿子成为世人的救主。 15 无论是谁，他若承认耶稣是上帝的儿子，上帝必住在他里面，他也住在上帝里面。 16 我们已经认识并且相信了上帝对我们的爱。
上帝就是爱，住在爱中的，就是住在上帝里面，上帝也住在他里面。 17 这样，爱在我们里面得到成全，使我们在审判的日子可以坦然无惧，因为我们在这世上以基督为榜样。 18 爱里没有恐惧，纯全的爱能驱除恐惧，因为恐惧意味着怕受惩罚。人若心里恐惧，就表示他尚未明白那纯全的爱。
19 我们爱，因为上帝先爱了我们。 20 若有人说“我爱上帝”，却恨自己的弟兄姊妹，这人就是说谎话，因为人若不爱看得见的弟兄姊妹，又怎能爱看不见的上帝呢？ 21 爱上帝的人也应该爱弟兄姊妹，这是上帝给我们的命令。

Leven vanuit God
4 Lieve broeders en zusters, geloof niet zomaar iedereen. Ga bij iedereen na of zijn boodschap wel echt van God komt. Want er lopen heel veel bedriegers op de wereld rond. 2 Zó kunnen jullie de Geest van God herkennen: iedereen die erkent dat Jezus Christus werkelijk een mens van vlees en bloed is geworden, hoort bij God. 3 En iedereen die dat niet wil erkennen,[a] hoort niet bij God, maar bij de vijand van Christus. Jullie weten dat die vijand zal komen. Hij is er ook nu al.
4 Jullie zijn uit God geboren, kinderen, en jullie hebben de vijanden van Christus overwonnen. Want Hij die in jullie is, is machtiger dan hij die in de wereld heerst. 5 De bedriegers zijn ongelovige mensen. Daarom zeggen ze dingen die de ongelovige mensen graag horen. En daarom luisteren de ongelovige mensen ook naar hen. 6 Maar wij horen bij God. De mensen die bij God horen, luisteren naar ons. De mensen die niet bij God horen, luisteren niet naar ons. Zo kunnen we weten of iemand vanuit de Geest van de waarheid spreekt, of vanuit de geest van bedrog.
God is liefde
7 Lieve broeders en zusters, laten we van elkaar houden.[b] Want de liefde komt van God. Als je van de broeders en zusters houdt, ben je uit God geboren en ken je God. 8 Als je niet van de broeders en zusters houdt, ken je God niet, want God is liefde. 9 We hebben gezien dat God van ons houdt: Hij heeft zijn enige Zoon naar de aarde gestuurd om ons eeuwig leven te geven. 10 De liefde waar ik het over heb is niet ónze liefde voor God, maar Gods liefde voor óns. Omdat Hij zoveel van ons houdt, stuurde Hij zijn Zoon. Zijn Zoon gaf zijn leven als offer, waardoor wij vergeving voor onze ongehoorzaamheid konden krijgen. 11 Lieve broeders en zusters, als God zóveel van ons houdt, moeten wij ook van elkaar houden. 12 Niemand heeft ooit God gezien. Maar als we van elkaar houden, woont God in ons en zijn we helemaal vol van zijn liefde.
13 We weten dat we één met Hem zijn en dat Hij één met ons is, doordat Hij ons van zijn Geest heeft gegeven. 14 Wij hebben met eigen ogen gezien dat de Vader de Zoon heeft gestuurd als Redder van de mensen. En dat is wat wij aan de mensen vertellen. 15 Als iemand hardop erkent dat Jezus de Zoon van God is, mag hij er zeker van zijn dat God in hem woont en dat hij in God is. 16 We hebben gezien en geloofd dat God heel veel van ons houdt. God is liefde. En als jullie net als God van elkaar houden, blijven jullie in God en blijft God in jullie.[c]
17 Als we helemaal vol van Gods liefde zijn geworden, hoeven we helemaal niet bang te zijn op de dag dat God over de mensen zal rechtspreken. Want dan zijn we in deze wereld net zoals Jezus. 18 Als je zeker weet dat God van je houdt en je dus vol bent van zijn liefde, hoef je niet bang voor Hem te zijn. Want volmaakte liefde verjaagt alle angst voor God. Want als je bang bent, komt dat omdat je bang bent voor straf. Als je bang bent, ben je nog niet helemaal vol van liefde.
19 Wij houden van God omdat Hij eerst van óns hield. 20 Als je zegt dat je van God houdt, maar een hekel hebt aan een broeder of zuster, dan ben je een leugenaar. Want als je niet houdt van je broeder of zuster die je kunt zien, hoe kun je dan houden van God die je niet kunt zien? 21 Daarom heeft Jezus ons bevolen: als je van Hem houdt, moet je ook van je broeders en zusters houden.

- 1 Johannes 4:3 Er was in die tijd een stroming in het geloof, die niet geloofde dat Jezus werkelijk een mens van vlees en bloed geworden is. Zij vonden dat het alleen maar léék alsof Hij een lichaam had. Maar de kern van het goede nieuws is nu juist dat God werkelijk mens werd in Jezus.

Warning Against False Teachers
4 ·My dear friends [L Beloved], many false prophets [Deut. 13:1–5; 18:14–22; Mark 13:22] have gone out into the world. So do not ·believe [trust] every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God [C the false teachers evidently claimed that their teaching was from the Spirit; 1 Cor. 12:1–3; 14:29; 1 Thess. 5:19–21]. 2 This is how you can ·know [recognize] God’s Spirit: Every spirit [C a teacher/prophet claiming inspiration from the Spirit] who ·confesses [acknowledges] that Jesus Christ came ·to earth as a human [L in the flesh] is from God. 3 And every spirit who ·refuses to say this about Jesus [L does not confess/acknowledge Jesus] is not from God [2 John 7]. It is the spirit of the ·enemy of Christ [L antichrist; 2:18, 22], which you have heard is coming, and now he is already in the world.
4 ·My dear children [2:1], you ·belong to [L are from] God and have ·defeated [conquered; overcome] them [C the antichrists/false teachers]; because ·God’s Spirit, who is in you, is greater than the devil, who is in the world [L that which is in you is greater than that which is in the world]. 5 And they ·belong to [L are from] the world, so what they say is from the world, and the world ·listens to [hears; obeys] them. 6 But we ·belong to [are from] God, and those who know God ·listen to [hear; obey] us. But those who are not from God do not ·listen to [hear; obey] us. That is how we ·know [recognize] the Spirit that is true and the spirit that ·is false [deceives; errs].
Love Comes from God
7 ·Dear friends [L Beloved], ·we should [let us] love each other, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has ·become God’s child [L been begotten/fathered by God] and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God ·showed [revealed] his love to us: He sent his one and only Son into the world so that we could have life through him. 10 This is what real love is: It is not our love for God; it is God’s love for us. He sent his Son ·to die in our place to take away our sins [as the atoning sacrifice/T propitiation for our sins; see 2:2].
11 ·Dear friends [Beloved], if God loved us ·that much [or in this way; John 3:16] we also should love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God [C God the Father; John 1:18], but if we love each other, God ·lives [remains; abides] ·in [or among] us, and his love ·is made perfect [is made complete; comes to full expression] in us.
13 [L By this] We know that we ·live [abide; remain] in God and he ·lives [abides; remains] in us, because he gave us [L of; from; 3:24] his Spirit [C we share in his Spirit]. 14 We have seen and can ·testify [witness; proclaim] that the Father sent his Son ·to be [or as] the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever ·confesses [acknowledges] that Jesus is the Son of God has God ·living [abiding; remaining] inside, and that person ·lives [abides; remains] in God. 16 And so we ·know [have come to know] the love that God has for us, and we ·trust [believe; rely on] that love.
God is love. Those who ·live [abide; remain] in love ·live [abide; remain] in God, and God ·lives [abides; remains] in them. 17 This is how love ·is made perfect [is made complete; comes to full expression] ·in [or among] us: that we can ·be without fear [have boldness; have confidence; 2:28; 3:21; 5:14] on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him [C probably referring to Christ, our example of love]. 18 ·Where God’s love is, there is no fear [L There is no fear in love], because ·God’s perfect love drives out fear [T perfect love casts out fear]. It is punishment that makes a person fear, so love is not made ·perfect [complete] in the person who fears [C fear of punishment, not an appropriate fear of God; compare Prov. 1:7; 2 Cor. 7:15; Phil. 2:12].
19 We love because ·God [L he] first loved us. 20 If people say, “I love God,” but hate their brothers or sisters [C fellow believers], they are liars. [L For] Those who do not love their brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have never seen. 21 And ·God gave us this command [L we have this command from him]: Those who love God must also love their brothers and sisters [C fellow believers; John 13:34].
