Jesus Flogged and Mocked

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. The soldiers also twisted together a crown(A) of thorns, put it on His head, and threw a purple robe around Him. And they repeatedly came up to Him(B) and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and were slapping His face.

Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing Him outside to you to let you know I find no grounds(C) for charging Him.”

Pilate Sentences Jesus to Death

Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.(D) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”(E)

When the chief priests and the temple police saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

Pilate responded, “Take Him and crucify Him yourselves, for I find no grounds for charging Him.”

“We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law He must die,(F) because He made Himself[a] the Son of God.”(G)

When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. He went back into the headquarters(H) and asked Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer.(I) 10 So Pilate said to Him, “You’re not talking to me? Don’t You know that I have the authority to release You and the authority to crucify You?”

11 “You would have no authority over Me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.”[b](J)

12 From that moment Pilate made every effort[c] to release Him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”

13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s bench in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Hebrew Gabbatha). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about six in the morning.[d] Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!”

15 But they shouted, “Take Him away! Take Him away! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?”

“We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.

16 So then, because of them, he handed Him over to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

Therefore they took Jesus away.[e] 17 Carrying(K) His own cross,(L) He went out to what is called Skull Place, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him and two others with Him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign lettered and put on the cross. The inscription was:

JESUS THE NAZARENE

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(M) and it was written in Hebrew,[f] Latin, and Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’(N) but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”

22 Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” They did this to fulfill(O) the Scripture(P) that says: They divided My clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.(Q)[g] And this is what the soldiers did.

Jesus’ Provision for His Mother

25 Standing(R) by the cross(S) of Jesus were His mother,(T) His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(U) 26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved(V) standing there, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

The Finished Work of Jesus

28 After(W) this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished(X) that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!”(Y) 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop[h](Z) and held it up to His mouth.

30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”(AA) Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.(AB)

Jesus’ Side Pierced

31 Since it was the preparation day,(AC) the Jews did not want the bodies(AD) to remain on the cross(AE) on the Sabbath(AF) (for that Sabbath was a special[i] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.(AG) 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead.(AH) 34 But one of the soldiers pierced(AI) His side(AJ) with a spear, and at once blood and water(AK) came out. 35 He who saw this has testified(AL) so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.(AM) 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:(AN) Not one of His bones will be broken.(AO)[j] 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.(AP)[k]

Jesus’ Burial

38 After(AQ) this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’ body.(AR) Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took His body away. 39 Nicodemus(AS) (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds[l] of myrrh and aloes. 40 Then they took Jesus’ body(AT) and wrapped it in linen cloths(AU) with the aromatic spices, according to the burial(AV) custom of the Jews. 41 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. 42 They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

19 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Condamnarea lui Isus

19 Atunci Pilat L-a luat pe Isus şi a pus să-L biciuiască[a]. Soldaţii au împletit o coroană de spini, I-au aşezat-o pe cap şi L-au îmbrăcat într-o mantie purpurie. Ei veneau la El şi-I ziceau: „Salutare, Împărate al iudeilor!“[b] Şi-I dădeau palme. Pilat a ieşit iarăşi afară şi le-a zis:

– Iată, vi-L aduc afară, ca să ştiţi că nu găsesc nici o vină în El!

Isus a ieşit deci afară, purtând cununa de spini şi mantia purpurie. Pilat le-a zis:

– Iată Omul!

Când L-au văzut, conducătorii preoţilor şi gărzile au strigat:

– Răstigneşte-L[c]! Răstigneşte-L!

Pilat le-a zis:

– Luaţi-L voi şi răstigniţi-L, pentru că eu nu găsesc nici o vină în El!

Iudeii i-au răspuns:

– Noi avem o Lege şi potrivit cu Legea aceasta El trebuie să moară, pentru că S-a făcut pe Sine Fiul lui Dumnezeu.

Când Pilat a auzit aceste cuvinte, s-a temut şi mai tare. A intrat din nou în pretoriu[d] şi L-a întrebat pe Isus:

– De unde eşti?

Dar Isus nu i-a dat nici un răspuns. 10 Atunci Pilat I-a zis:

– Nu vorbeşti cu mine? Nu ştii că am autoritate să Te eliberez şi am autoritate să Te răstignesc?

11 Isus i-a răspuns:

– N-ai avea nici o autoritate asupra Mea dacă nu ţi-ar fi fost dată de sus. De aceea cel ce Mă dă pe mâna ta are un mai mare păcat.

12 De atunci Pilat căuta să-L elibereze, însă iudeii strigau:

– Dacă-L eliberezi, nu eşti prieten al Cezarului[e]! Oricine se face pe sine împărat este împotriva Cezarului!

13 Când a auzit Pilat aceste cuvinte, L-a dus afară pe Isus şi s-a aşezat pe scaunul de judecată, în locul numit „Pavajul de piatră“, iar în aramaică: „Gabbatha[f]. 14 Era Ziua Pregătirii Paştelui, cam pe la ceasul al şaselea[g]. Pilat le-a zis iudeilor:

– Iată-L pe Împăratul vostru!

15 Ei au strigat:

– Ia-L, ia-L, răstigneşte-L!

Pilat i-a întrebat:

– Să-L răstignesc pe Împăratul vostru?

Conducătorii preoţilor au răspuns:

– Noi n-avem alt împărat decât pe Cezar!

16 Atunci Pilat L-a dat pe mâna lor ca să fie răstignit.

Răstignirea

L-au luat deci pe Isus, 17 iar El, ducându-Şi crucea, S-a îndreptat spre locul numit „al Craniului“[h], care în aramaică se numeşte „Golgota“. 18 L-au răstignit acolo şi cu El au răstignit alţi doi, unul într-o parte şi unul în cealaltă parte, cu Isus la mijloc. 19 Pilat a scris o însemnare şi a pus-o pe cruce. Pe ea era scris: „Isus din Nazaret, Împăratul iudeilor“. 20 Mulţi dintre iudei au citit această inscripţie, pentru că locul unde fusese răstignit Isus era aproape de cetate; era scrisă în aramaică, latină şi greacă. 21 Atunci conducătorii preoţilor iudeilor i-au zis lui Pilat:

– Nu scrie: „Împăratul iudeilor“, ci: „El a zis: «Eu sunt Împăratul iudeilor!»“

22 Pilat le-a răspuns:

– Ce-am scris, am scris!

23 Când soldaţii L-au răstignit pe Isus, I-au luat hainele şi le-au împărţit în patru părţi, câte o parte pentru fiecare soldat. De asemenea, I-au luat şi tunica. Tunica era fără nici o cusătură, fiind ţesută dintr-o singură bucată de sus până jos. 24 Atunci şi-au zis unii altora: „Să n-o sfâşiem, ci să tragem la sorţi a cui să fie!“ Aceasta s-a întâmplat ca să se împlinească Scriptura care zice:

„Şi-au împărţit veşmintele Mele între ei
    şi au tras la sorţi pentru cămaşa Mea.“[i]

Soldaţii sunt deci cei ce au făcut aceste lucruri.

25 Lângă crucea lui Isus stăteau mama Lui, sora mamei Lui, Maria – soţia lui Clopa – şi Maria Magdalena. 26 Când Isus a văzut-o pe mama Lui şi, lângă ea, pe ucenicul pe care-l iubea[j], i-a zis mamei Sale: „Femeie, iată-l pe fiul tău!“. 27 Apoi i-a zis ucenicului: „Iat-o pe mama ta!“ Şi din ceasul acela ucenicul a luat-o acasă la el.

Moartea lui Isus

28 După aceea, Isus, Care ştia că acum totul s-a sfârşit, ca să se împlinească Scriptura, a zis: „Mi-e sete!“[k] 29 Acolo era pus un vas plin cu vin acru[l]. Au pus într-o ramură de isop un burete plin cu vin acru şi I l-au dus la gură. 30 Când a primit vinul, Isus a zis: „S-a terminat!“. Apoi Şi-a plecat capul şi Şi-a dat duhul.

31 Pentru că era Ziua Pregătirii, iudeii, ca să nu rămână trupurile pe cruce în timpul Sabatului, pentru că acel Sabat era o zi mare, i-au cerut lui Pilat să fie zdrobite picioarele celor răstigniţi şi să fie luaţi de pe cruce. 32 Soldaţii au venit deci şi i-au zdrobit picioarele primului, apoi şi ale celuilalt care fusese răstignit împreună cu El. 33 Însă, când au venit la Isus, au văzut că deja murise şi nu I-au mai zdrobit picioarele, 34 ci unul dintre soldaţi I-a străpuns coasta cu suliţa; şi imediat a ieşit sânge şi apă. 35 Cel ce a văzut lucrul acesta a depus mărturie şi mărturia lui este adevărată. Şi el ştie că spune adevărul, pentru ca şi voi să credeţi. 36 Căci aceste lucruri s-au întâmplat ca să se împlinească Scriptura care zice: „Nici unul din oasele Lui nu va fi rupt.“[m] 37 Şi în altă parte, Scriptura mai zice: „Vor privi la Cel pe Care L-au străpuns.“[n]

38 După aceea, Iosif din Arimateea, care era ucenic al lui Isus, dar în secret, de frica iudeilor, i-a cerut lui Pilat să-l lase să ia trupul lui Isus. Pilat i-a dat voie. Prin urmare, el a venit şi a luat trupul lui Isus. 39 A venit şi Nicodim, cel care la început se dusese la Isus noaptea, şi a adus un amestec de aproape o sută de litre[o] de smirnă şi aloe. 40 Au luat trupul lui Isus şi L-au înfăşurat în fâşii de pânză de in, cu miresme, aşa cum este obiceiul de înmormântare la iudei. 41 În locul unde fusese răstignit era o grădină, iar în grădină era un mormânt nou, în care nu mai fusese pus nimeni. 42 Pentru că era Ziua Pregătirii Iudeilor şi pentru că mormântul era aproape, L-au pus pe Isus acolo.
