2 Chronicles 22
Expanded Bible
Ahaziah King of Judah(A)
22 The people of Jerusalem ·chose [made] Ahaziah, Jehoram’s youngest son, to be king in his place. The ·robbers [raiders; marauders] who had come with the Arabs to attack Jehoram’s camp had killed all of Jehoram’s older sons. So Ahaziah began to ·rule [reign over] Judah. 2 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he ·ruled [reigned] one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri. 3 Ahaziah ·followed [L walked in] the ways of Ahab’s ·family [L house], because his mother ·encouraged [counseled; advised] him to do ·wrong [evil]. 4 Ahaziah did ·what the Lord said was wrong [L evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes], as Ahab’s ·family [L house] had done. They ·gave advice to Ahaziah [were his counselors] after his father died, ·and their bad advice led to his death [leading to his destruction]. 5 Following their ·advice [counsel], Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to Ramoth in Gilead, where they fought against Hazael king of Aram. The Arameans wounded Joram. 6 So Joram returned to Jezreel to heal from the wounds he received at Ramoth when he fought Hazael king of Aram.
Ahaziah son of Jehoram and king of Judah went down to visit Joram son of Ahab at Jezreel because he had been ·wounded [sick].
Ahaziah Dies(B)
7 God caused Ahaziah’s ·death [downfall] when he went to visit Joram. Ahaziah arrived and went out with Joram to ·meet [fight] Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had ·appointed [L anointed] to destroy Ahab’s ·family [L house]. 8 While Jehu was ·punishing [executing judgment against] Ahab’s ·family [L house], he found the ·leaders [officials] of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s ·relatives [brothers] who served Ahaziah, and Jehu killed them all [2 Kin. 10:12–14]. 9 Then Jehu ·looked [searched] for Ahaziah. Jehu’s men caught him hiding in Samaria, so they brought him to Jehu. Then they killed and buried him. They said, “Ahaziah is a descendant of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat ·obeyed [sought] the Lord with all his heart.” No one in Ahaziah’s ·family [L house] ·had the power [was strong enough] to take control of the kingdom of Judah.
Athaliah and Joash(C)
10 When Ahaziah’s mother, Athaliah, saw that her son was dead, she ·killed [destroyed] all the royal ·family [line] of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehosheba, King Jehoram’s daughter, took Joash, Ahaziah’s son. She stole him from among the other sons of the king who were going to be ·murdered [executed] and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. So Jehosheba, who was King Jehoram’s daughter and Ahaziah’s sister and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, hid Joash so Athaliah could not ·kill [execute] him. 12 He hid with them in the ·Temple [L house] of God for six years. During that time Athaliah ·ruled [reigned over] the land.
2 Chronicles 22
New International Version
Ahaziah King of Judah(A)(B)
22 The people(C) of Jerusalem(D) made Ahaziah, Jehoram’s youngest son, king in his place, since the raiders,(E) who came with the Arabs into the camp, had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.
2 Ahaziah was twenty-two[a] years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri.
3 He too followed(F) the ways of the house of Ahab,(G) for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly. 4 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for after his father’s death they became his advisers, to his undoing. 5 He also followed their counsel when he went with Joram[b] son of Ahab king of Israel to wage war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(H) The Arameans wounded Joram; 6 so he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(I) king of Aram.
Then Ahaziah[d] son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab because he had been wounded.
7 Through Ahaziah’s(J) visit to Joram, God brought about Ahaziah’s downfall. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out with Joram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. 8 While Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab,(K) he found the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s relatives, who had been attending Ahaziah, and he killed them. 9 He then went in search of Ahaziah, and his men captured him while he was hiding(L) in Samaria. He was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He was a son of Jehoshaphat, who sought(M) the Lord with all his heart.” So there was no one in the house of Ahaziah powerful enough to retain the kingdom.
Athaliah and Joash(N)
10 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehosheba,[e] the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehosheba,[f] the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada, was Ahaziah’s sister, she hid the child from Athaliah so she could not kill him. 12 He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

New King James Version
Ahaziah Reigns in Judah(A)
22 Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem made (B)Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place, for the raiders who came with the (C)Arabians into the camp had killed all the (D)older sons. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, reigned. 2 Ahaziah was [a]forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was (E)Athaliah the [b]granddaughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother advised him to do wickedly. 4 Therefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction. 5 He also followed their advice, and went with [c]Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram. 6 (F)Then he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And [d]Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.
7 His going to Joram (G)was God’s occasion for Ahaziah’s [e]downfall; for when he arrived, (H)he went out with [f]Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, (I)whom the Lord had anointed to [g]cut off the house of Ahab. 8 And it happened, when Jehu was (J)executing judgment on the house of Ahab, and (K)found the princes of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers who served Ahaziah, that he killed them. 9 (L)Then he searched for Ahaziah; and they caught him (he was hiding in Samaria), and brought him to Jehu. When they had killed him, they buried him, “because,” they said, “he is the son of (M)Jehoshaphat, who (N)sought the Lord with all his heart.”
So the house of Ahaziah had no one to assume power over the kingdom.
Athaliah Reigns in Judah(O)
10 (P)Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs of the house of Judah. 11 But [h]Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took (Q)Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered, and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she did not kill him. 12 And he was hidden with them in the house of God for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
