The Musicians

25 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph,(A) Heman(B) and Jeduthun(C) for the ministry of prophesying,(D) accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.(E) Here is the list of the men(F) who performed this service:(G)

From the sons of Asaph:

Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.

As for Jeduthun, from his sons:(H)

Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp(I) in thanking and praising the Lord.

As for Heman, from his sons:

Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. (All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.)

All these men were under the supervision of their father(J) for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God.

Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman(K) were under the supervision of the king.(L) Along with their relatives—all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord—they numbered 288. Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots(M) for their duties.

Die Dienstgruppen der Sänger und Musiker

25 David wählte zusammen mit den Heerführern die Familien von Asaf, Heman und Jedutun für einen besonderen Dienst aus: Sie sollten mit ihren Liedern die Botschaften Gottes verkünden und den Gesang mit Harfen, Lauten und Zimbeln begleiten. Folgende Männer wurden dazu berufen:

Von Asafs Familie: Sakkur, Josef, Netanja und Asarela, die Söhne von Asaf. Ihr Vater war der Leiter dieser Gruppe, er dichtete im Auftrag des Königs prophetische Lieder.

Von Jedutuns Familie: Gedalja, Zeri, Jesaja, Schimi[a], Haschabja und Mattitja, die sechs Söhne von Jedutun. Ihr Vater leitete diese Gruppe. Er begleitete den prophetischen Gesang mit der Laute, um den Herrn zu loben und zu preisen.

Von Hemans Familie: Bukkija, Mattanja, Usiël, Schubaël, Jerimot, Hananja, Hanani, Eliata, Giddalti, Romamti-Eser, Joschbekascha, Malloti, Hotir und Mahasiot. Sie alle waren Söhne von Heman, einem Seher, der in Davids Dienst stand. Gott hatte Heman verheißen, ihn zu einem mächtigen und angesehenen Mann zu machen,[b] darum hatte er ihm vierzehn Söhne und drei Töchter geschenkt.

Diese drei Familien begleiteten den Gesang im Tempel des Herrn mit Zimbeln, Harfen und Lauten. Ihre Väter Asaf, Jedutun und Heman waren verantwortlich für den Gesang und die Musikbegleitung. Sie versahen ihren Dienst so, wie der König es angeordnet hatte. Insgesamt wurden 288 Leviten für den Gesang im Tempel ausgebildet. Sie alle waren ausgezeichnete Sänger. Auch ihre Diensteinteilung wurde durch das Los bestimmt. Alle wurden gleich behandelt, die Jungen wie die Alten, der Lehrer wie der Schüler.

9-31 Es wurden 24 Dienstgruppen ausgelost, und jede bestand aus 12 Männern. Folgende Männer bildeten mit ihren Söhnen und Verwandten je eine Gruppe:

The Musicians

25 Moreover David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons of (A)Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals. And the number of the skilled men performing their service was: Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and [a]Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were [b]under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied according to the order of the king. Of (B)Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, [c]Zeri, Jeshaiah, [d]Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, [e]six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp to give thanks and to praise the Lord. Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, [f]Uzziel, [g]Shebuel, [h]Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words of God, to [i]exalt his (C)horn. For God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All these were under the direction of their father for the music in the house of the Lord, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and (D)harps, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were (E)under the authority of the king. So the (F)number of them, with their brethren who were instructed in the songs of the Lord, all who were skillful, was two hundred and eighty-eight.

And they cast lots for their duty, the small as well as the great, (G)the teacher with the student.
