約櫃在非利士各城引起的災害
5 非利士人搶去了 神的約櫃，就把它從以便以謝運到亞實突。 2 非利士人搶去 神的約櫃，把它抬進大袞廟，放在大袞神像的旁邊。 3 第二天清早，亞實突人起來，看見大袞神像仆倒在地，俯伏在耶和華的約櫃面前。他們就把大袞神像豎立起來，放回原處。 4 再次日早晨，他們起來的時候，看見大袞神像又仆倒在地，俯伏在耶和華的約櫃面前，大袞的頭和雙手也都在門檻上折斷了，只剩下大袞的身體。 5 因此大袞的祭司和所有進亞實突大袞廟的人，都不踏大袞廟的門檻，直到現在。
6 耶和華的手重重地壓在亞實突人身上，敗壞他們，用痔瘡擊打亞實突和亞實突四境的人。 7 亞實突人看見這種情形，就說：“以色列 神的約櫃不可再留在我們這裡，因為他的手重重地加在我們和我們的神大袞身上。” 8 他們就派人去召集非利士人各城的首領前來，問他們：“我們要怎樣處理以色列 神的約櫃呢？”他們回答：“把以色列 神的約櫃運到迦特去吧。”他們就把它運到迦特去了。 9 運到那裡以後，耶和華的手攻擊那城，引起很大的恐慌。他擊打全城的人，不分老幼，使痔瘡在他們中間蔓延。 10 於是他們把 神的約櫃送到以革倫。 神的約櫃到了以革倫的時候，以革倫人就喊叫：“他們把以色列 神的約櫃運到我們這裡來，是要殺害我們和我們的人啊！” 11 於是他們派人去召集非利士人各城的首領前來，對他們說：“請把以色列 神的約櫃送回原處，免得它殺害我們和我們的人民。”死亡的恐慌籠罩全城，因為 神的手重重地壓在那裡。 12 沒有死的人都遭受痔瘡的打擊；那城的哀聲，上達於天。

God Causes Trouble for the Philistines
5 The Philistines took the sacred chest from near Ebenezer to the town of Ashdod. 2 They brought it into the temple of their god Dagon and put it next to the statue of Dagon, which they worshiped.
3 When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, they found the statue lying facedown on the floor in front of the sacred chest. They put the statue back where it belonged. 4 But early the next morning, it had fallen over again and was lying facedown on the floor in front of the chest. The body of the statue was still in one piece, but its head and both hands had broken off and were lying on the stone floor in the doorway. 5 This is why the priests and everyone else step over that part of the doorway when they enter the temple of Dagon in Ashdod.
6 The Lord caused a lot of trouble for the people of Ashdod and their neighbors. He made sores break out all over their bodies,[a] and everyone was in a panic.[b] 7 Finally, they said, “The God of Israel did this. He is the one who caused all this trouble for us and our god Dagon. We've got to get rid of this chest.”
8 The people of Ashdod invited all the Philistine rulers to come to Ashdod, and they asked them, “What can we do with the sacred chest that belongs to the God of Israel?”
“Send it to Gath,” the rulers answered. But after they took it there, 9 the Lord made sores break out on everyone in town. The people of Gath were frightened, 10 so they sent the sacred chest to Ekron. But before they could take it through the town gates, the people of Ekron started screaming, “They've brought the sacred chest that belongs to the God of Israel! It will kill us and our families too!”
The Philistines Send Back the Sacred Chest
11 The people of Ekron called for another meeting of the Philistine rulers and told them, “Send this chest back where it belongs. Then it won't kill us.”
Everyone was in a panic, because God was causing a lot of people to die, 12 and those who had survived were suffering from the sores. They all cried to their gods for help.

5 Después de que los filisteos capturaron el arca de Dios, la llevaron desde Ebenezer a Asdod. 2 Tomaron el arca y la metieron en el templo de su dios Dagón, y la pusieron junto a ese ídolo. 3 Al siguiente día, cuando los habitantes de Asdod se levantaron, vieron que Dagón estaba arrodillado ante el arca del Señor, así que tomaron a Dagón y lo devolvieron a su lugar. 4 Pero al día siguiente, Dagón estaba una vez más de rodillas ante el arca del Señor, sólo que ahora Dagón tenía cortadas la cabeza y las dos manos, y nada más le había quedado el tronco, el cual estaba colocado sobre el umbral. 5 Por esta razón, hasta hoy los sacerdotes de Dagón y todos los que entran en su templo de Asdod, no pisan el umbral del templo.
6 El poder del Señor se dejó sentir sobre los habitantes de Asdod y sobre todo su territorio, pues los castigó con terribles tumores. 7 Al darse cuenta de esto, los habitantes de Asdod dijeron: «El arca del Dios de Israel no debe quedarse entre nosotros, porque ha hecho sentir su poder contra nuestro pueblo y contra Dagón, nuestro dios.» 8 Entonces convocaron a los jefes de los filisteos, y les preguntaron:
«¿Qué debemos hacer con el arca del Dios de Israel?»
Y los jefes respondieron:
«Llévenla hasta Gat.»
Y los filisteos se llevaron el arca del Señor hasta allá. 9 Pero después de habérsela llevado, el poder del Señor se dejó sentir contra los habitantes de la ciudad pues les quebrantó su ánimo, y todos, desde el más chico hasta el más grande, estaban afligidos porque se llenaron de tumores. 10 Por eso enviaron el arca de Dios a Ecrón. Pero cuando el arca llegó allá, los ecronitas se espantaron y dijeron:
«Nos han enviado el arca del Dios de Israel para matarnos a todos nosotros y a nuestro pueblo.»
11 Entonces convocaron a los jefes de los filisteos para decirles:
«Devuelvan el arca del Dios de Israel al lugar que le corresponde, para que no nos mate a todos.»
Y es que toda la ciudad vivía con el temor a la muerte, pues el poder de Dios había aumentado contra ellos, 12 y los que no morían se llenaban de tumores, y sus gritos llegaban hasta el cielo.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
