We had previously suffered(A) and been treated outrageously in Philippi,(B) as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.(C) For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,(D) nor are we trying to trick you.(E) On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.(F) We are not trying to please people(G) but God, who tests our hearts.(H)

but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, just as you know, we had the courage in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition. For our exhortation is not from error or from impurity or with deceit, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, thus we speak, not as pleasing people but God, who examines our hearts.
