Achaz, koning van Juda
28 Achaz was 20 jaar toen hij koning werd. Hij regeerde 16 jaar in Jeruzalem. Hij leefde niet zoals de Heer het wil, zoals zijn voorvader David wél had gedaan. 2 Maar hij deed dezelfde dingen als de koningen van Israël. Hij maakte zelfs beelden voor Baäl. 3 In het Ben-Hinnomdal bracht hij offers aan Baäl. Hij verbrandde daar zelfs zijn zonen, net zoals vroeger de volken hadden gedaan die de Heer voor Israël uit het land had weggejaagd. 4 Hij bracht offers op de altaren op de heuvels en onder elke grote boom. 5 Daarom gaf zijn Heer God hem in de macht van de koning van Aram. Hij werd door hem verslagen. De koning van Aram nam veel Judeeërs gevangen mee naar Damaskus.
Ook werd hij overwonnen door koning Peka van Israël. 6 Koning Peka, de zoon van Remalia, doodde in Juda op één dag 120.000 krijgers. Dat gebeurde omdat ze niet meer hun Heer God dienden. 7 Zichri, een held uit Efraïm, doodde Maäseja (de zoon van de koning), Azrikam (de aanvoerder van de paleiswacht) en Elkana (de minister-president). 8 Ook namen de Israëlieten 200.000 vrouwen, zonen en dochters van de Judeeërs gevangen mee. Verder namen ze een heel grote buit mee naar Samaria. 9 Maar in Samaria woonde een profeet van de Heer, die Oded heette. Hij ging het leger dat naar Samaria terugkwam, tegemoet. Hij zei tegen de koning en de aanvoerders: "De Heer, de God van uw voorvaders, heeft u de overwinning over Juda gegeven. Dat heeft Hij gedaan omdat Hij kwaad was op Juda. Maar dat u daarbij zoveel mensen heeft gedood, is te erg voor woorden. 10 En nu denkt u óók nog de mensen uit Juda en Jeruzalem als slaven en slavinnen te kunnen meenemen. Ook u bent daarmee heel erg schuldig tegenover uw Heer God.[a] 11 Luister daarom naar mij, want de Heer is woedend op u. Laat deze gevangenen weer vrij. Want het zijn mensen van uw eigen volk."
12 Een aantal familiehoofden uit de stam van Efraïm was het met de profeet eens. Dat waren Azarja de zoon van Johanan, Berechja de zoon van Mesillemot, Jehizkia de zoon van Sallum, en Amasa de zoon van Hadlai. 13 Ze zeiden tegen de aanvoerders die van de strijd terugkwamen: "Jullie mogen deze gevangenen niet hier brengen. Want de Heer is er woedend over dat jullie hen meegebracht hebben. Hij is toch al kwaad op ons, omdat we zoveel verkeerd gedaan hebben. En hiermee maken jullie het alleen maar erger." 14 Toen gaven ze de gevangenen en de buit aan de familiehoofden. 15 En de mannen die hierboven genoemd zijn, begonnen de gevangenen te helpen. Ze gaven de mensen die niets meer aan hadden, kleren en schoenen uit de buit. Ze gaven iedereen eten en drinken en ze verzorgden hun wonden met olijf-olie. De mensen die te zwak waren om nog te lopen, zetten ze op ezels. Zo brachten ze hen naar Jericho in Juda, de Palmstad. Daarna gingen ze terug naar Samaria.
Achaz en de koning van Assur
16 In die tijd vroeg koning Achaz aan de koningen van Assur om hulp. 17 Want de Edomieten hadden Juda weer aangevallen en veel mensen gevangen meegenomen. 18 Ook de Filistijnen hadden een overval gedaan. Ze hadden de steden in de vlakte en in het zuiden van Juda overvallen. Ze hadden Bet-Semes, Ajalon, Gederot, Socho met de dorpen die daarbij horen, Timna met de dorpen die daarbij horen en Gimzo met de dorpen die daarbij horen veroverd. En ze waren er zelf gaan wonen. 19 Want de Heer strafte Juda. Dat deed Hij omdat door Achaz' schuld heel Juda ongehoorzaam was geworden aan de Heer. Heel Juda deed vreselijke dingen.
20 Koning Tiglat-Pileser van Assur kwam inderdaad uit Damaskus naar koning Achaz toe. Maar hij kwam niet om Achaz te helpen, maar bedreigde hem juist. 21 Toen haalde Achaz de tempel van de Heer en het koninklijk paleis leeg en gaf alles aan de koning van Assur. Maar het hielp hem niets: de koning van Assur kwam hem niet te hulp. 22 En hoe meer Achaz in het nauw kwam, hoe ontrouwer hij werd aan de Heer. Zo was koning Achaz. 23 Hij bracht offers aan de goden van Damaskus die hem hadden verslagen. Want hij dacht: "De goden van Aram helpen de koningen van Aram. Als ik aan hen ga offeren, zullen ze mij ook helpen tegen de koning van Assur." Maar daardoor liep het juist slecht af met hem en zijn land. 24 Achaz liet alle voorwerpen uit de tempel van God op een hoop gooien en stukslaan. Hij sloot de tempel van de Heer en zette altaren neer op elke straathoek in Jeruzalem. 25 In elke stad van Juda zette hij altaren neer voor andere goden. Zo maakte hij de Heer, de God van zijn voorouders, woedend.
26 De rest van wat hij allemaal heeft gedaan,[b] vanaf het begin van zijn regering tot aan het einde, staat opgeschreven in de boeken met de geschiedenis van de koningen van Juda en Israël. 27 Achaz stierf en werd begraven in Jeruzalem, maar niet bij de andere koningen. Zijn zoon Hizkia werd na hem koning van Juda.

Ahaz King of Judah(A)
28 Ahaz(B) was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 2 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and also made idols(C) for worshiping the Baals. 3 He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(D) and sacrificed his children(E) in the fire, engaging in the detestable(F) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.
5 Therefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram.(G) The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus.
He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him. 6 In one day Pekah(H) son of Remaliah killed a hundred and twenty thousand soldiers in Judah(I)—because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 7 Zikri, an Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer in charge of the palace, and Elkanah, second to the king. 8 The men of Israel took captive from their fellow Israelites who were from Judah(J) two hundred thousand wives, sons and daughters. They also took a great deal of plunder, which they carried back to Samaria.(K)
9 But a prophet of the Lord named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army when it returned to Samaria. He said to them, “Because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, was angry(L) with Judah, he gave them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches to heaven.(M) 10 And now you intend to make the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves.(N) But aren’t you also guilty of sins against the Lord your God? 11 Now listen to me! Send back your fellow Israelites you have taken as prisoners, for the Lord’s fierce anger rests on you.(O)”
12 Then some of the leaders in Ephraim—Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berekiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—confronted those who were arriving from the war. 13 “You must not bring those prisoners here,” they said, “or we will be guilty before the Lord. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.”
14 So the soldiers gave up the prisoners and plunder in the presence of the officials and all the assembly. 15 The men designated by name took the prisoners, and from the plunder they clothed all who were naked. They provided them with clothes and sandals, food and drink,(P) and healing balm. All those who were weak they put on donkeys. So they took them back to their fellow Israelites at Jericho, the City of Palms,(Q) and returned to Samaria.(R)
16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the kings[a] of Assyria(S) for help. 17 The Edomites(T) had again come and attacked Judah and carried away prisoners,(U) 18 while the Philistines(V) had raided towns in the foothills and in the Negev of Judah. They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon(W) and Gederoth,(X) as well as Soko,(Y) Timnah(Z) and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages. 19 The Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel,[b] for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful(AA) to the Lord. 20 Tiglath-Pileser[c](AB) king of Assyria(AC) came to him, but he gave him trouble(AD) instead of help.(AE) 21 Ahaz(AF) took some of the things from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.(AG)
22 In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful(AH) to the Lord. 23 He offered sacrifices to the gods(AI) of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, “Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me.”(AJ) But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.(AK)
24 Ahaz gathered together the furnishings(AL) from the temple of God(AM) and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors(AN) of the Lord’s temple and set up altars(AO) at every street corner in Jerusalem. 25 In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
26 The other events of his reign and all his ways, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 Ahaz rested(AP) with his ancestors and was buried(AQ) in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaz Reigns in Judah
28 (A)Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done, 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made (B)metal images for (C)the Baals, 3 and (D)he made offerings in the (E)Valley of the Son of Hinnom and (F)burned his sons as an offering,[a] according to (G)the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and (H)made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.
Judah Defeated
5 (I)Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force. 6 For (J)Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 from Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers. 7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king's son and Azrikam the commander of the palace and Elkanah the next in authority to the king.
8 The men of Israel took captive 200,000 (K)of their relatives, women, sons, and daughters. They also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria. 9 But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded, and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the Lord, the God of your fathers, (L)was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage (M)that has reached up to heaven. 10 And now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, as your slaves. Have you not sins of your own against the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, and send back the captives (N)from your relatives whom you have taken, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.”
12 Certain chiefs also of the men of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring upon us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the assembly. 15 And (O)the men who have been mentioned by name rose and took the captives, and with the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them. They clothed them, gave them sandals, (P)provided them with food and drink, and anointed them, and carrying all the feeble among them on donkeys, they brought them to their kinsfolk at Jericho, (Q)the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria.
16 (R)At that time King Ahaz sent to the king[b] of Assyria for help. 17 For the Edomites had again invaded and defeated Judah and carried away captives. 18 (S)And the Philistines had made raids on (T)the cities in the Shephelah and the Negeb of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco (U)with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages. And they settled there. 19 For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made (V)Judah act sinfully[c] and had been very unfaithful to the Lord. 20 So (W)Tiglath-pileser[d] king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him. 21 (X)For Ahaz took a portion from the house of the Lord and the house of the king and of the princes, and gave tribute to the king of Assyria, but it did not help him.
Ahaz's Idolatry
22 In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz. 23 For (Y)he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus that had defeated him and said, (Z)“Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and (AA)cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made himself (AB)altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 In every city of Judah he made high places to (AC)make offerings to other gods, provoking to anger the Lord, the God of his fathers. 26 (AD)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for (AE)they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.
